The only thing lacking for me - the photos were so few and small (although the ones that were selected were perfect) that they did not illuminate the text as was the purpose.
My favorites were -
Deborah Bright on Mirrors and Window Shoppers: Lesbians, Photography, and the Politics of Visibility - Which included a number of photos including Yantra #56 by Tee A. Corinne taken in 1982 and is still evocative today
Carole S. Vance on The Pleasures of Looking: The Attorney General's Commission on Pornography versus Visual Images
Carol Squiers on the paparazzi
Griselda Pollock on images of women
Victor Burgin on Helmut Newton

The book is mostly pop-sociology........2004-07-04
Over Exposed deserves five stars for its catchy title and for its goal of providing a book of photography criticism. However, the book being reviewed fails as a book on photo criticism. What is found inside deserves only one star. Inside the covers of this 330 page book is found a good deal of pop-sociology and little on photography criticism. The book under review clearly articulates a general problem, and a problem that taints Over Exposed itself: "Enter the major university library in which some of the research for this article was carried out, and look for the section on photography . . . it contains a narrow assortment of books, titles such as The Photographic Lab Handbook . . . as well as a variety of coffee-table monographs . . . critical theory does not seem to have made much of an incursion into these shelves." (page 153). In short, the book under review contains not much "critical theory" and a great deal of gibberish. The book under review does contain a few insights into photo criticism. For example, there is a nice description of the technique or approach of photographing tourists in the act of photographing tourist traps (page 137). However, much of Over Exposed consists of irrelevant gibberish. For example: "All human sexuality is deviant. Nothing about our sexuality belongs to anything that could be described as a natural instinctual process. In the natural world, instinctual behavior is hereditary, predictable, and invariant in any member of a given species." (page 53). Another example of bizarre gibberish: "But the architecture discourse exemplified by Goldberger's journalism obscures the urban context most effectively not when it turns its back on the city altogether but when it professes social responsibility in the form of a concern for the city's physical environment." (page 57). More meaninngless gibberish and gobbledegook appears on page 90: "The supreme measure of the city's alignment with corporate interests in the area is the failure of any of its reports to mention the socioeconomic impact of the redevelopment plan on the area's low income population." (page 57). And on page 106: "The following discussion turns on a distinction between members of HIV/AIDS communities (intra-HIV community) and people who are not members of those communities (extra-HIV community). This may seem to be an invidious distinction, no matter where one stands in relation to these proposed categories." (page 106). And from page 192 comes more meaningless word salad: "The paradoxical emphasis on finding one's freedom in the loss of one's origins locates his outsideness in a Diasporic condition which, far from offering the dubious comforts of minoritarian self-certainty produces a kind of essential conflict through which to struggle to new visions." (page 192). Pages 229 to 246 are devoted to explaining why lipstick is a phallic symbol. To conclude, the book under review provides 330 pages of grammatically correct sentences that lack mission and purpose, and that are largely devoid of relevance to photographs. At best, the book might be viewed as relevant to changes in social mores and how these influence styles of photography. Many of the chapters make attempts at turgid, academic writing, by providing little lists of art critics or little lists of photographers. Moreover, the occasional reference to Karl Marx in this book is just a bit unbearable (please, this is supposed to be a little book on photography, not on political philosophy). In view of the focus of Over Exposed on gibberish and gobbledegook, what is the photographer to buy for guidance or solace? The reviewer suggests buying Why People Photograph by Robert Adams (Aperture) or Light Readings by A.D. Coleman (U. New Mexico).
Don't be deceived.......2000-07-21
This is the case of a new title for an old book: Carol Squiers (ed.), The Critical Image: Essays on Contemporary Photography (Seattle: Bay Press, 1990). Even the small, not significant changes, as is the replacement of three articles by four new ones, does not justify a new edition as a new book, with a new title. If I had previous acquaitance of this, I would not order this book.
Long Awaited..........2000-07-21
Carol Squiers has once again brought together the perfect blend of photographic interpretation, classic articles combined with cutting edge thought. I especially enjoyed the emphasis on multiple perspectives as illustrated by Theresa Harlan's discussion of contemporary Native American photography.

This big book of selected sunday cartoons is great. If you alread saw this on the newspapers or online you will get a new vaued experiece by the quality of the printed color. Also the quality of the art is great!!
Wonderful Comic Strip!.......2002-02-10
I fell in love with this comic strip in Vallejo California. When I moved, I was so disappointed to find that the local newspaper didn't carry it. Thank goodness for computers! I found the comic strip online, and now receive it daily in an email! The books are wonderful "pick me ups". Rose and her family, experience life with love and humor. You'll find yourself with a smile on your face as you read this book.
Smiles on every page : ).......2002-01-26
I received this book as a gift this past holiday season. I must say it was one of my most favorite presents. It will bring much joy to anyone who prefers to smile and laugh instead of frown and grumble.
I pick it up each time I'm feeling down, and it lifts my spirits. Thanks so much Pat Brady for creating this comic and putting out whole books for us to enjoy.
I lost a pet shortly after Christmas and this book in part helped me keep my head up and my tears at bay. I HIGHLY advise buying it if you love Rose Is Rose, and if you don't know the strip I can't think of a better way to get to know the whole gang, and share in all the fun. I can't wait to add more of these books to my collection. -Heather :)
Magic in 128 Pages.......2000-11-26
I first came across Rose is Rose in my local newspaper. After the first strip, I was hooked. This book is a great compilation of many classic Sunday Rose is Rose comics done in beautiful full color. This is a great read when you're feeling down, because the love contained in the book almost jumps right at you and envelops you. Although that may sound a bit sappy, there very little doubt that after you read this book, you'll have as big a smile as Pasquale does in the book. If you're a Rose is Rose fan, or even if you've never seen this comic before, it's a great buy.
Gorgeous artwork, but a bit sappy in some places.......2000-06-28
I have simply no idea how Pat Brady was raised as a young boy, but he could sure create such a magical, fun-filled fantasy world full of bottomless unconditional love, pure childhood innocence, and endless flights of wild imagination. Where else would you find parents who are totally in touch with their "inner children" and are totally, completely in love with each other even though it is already years after their honeymoon trip. Thus you get a family who truly knows how to ENJOY life! So here are some of the Gumbos' best adventures collected together in FULL COLOR. However, there are still a few drawbacks to living in a world like this. It's a itty bit smothering at times and a little tad too cutesy at other times. So you might want to come up for some air every now and then. And it's a bit irky the way that little guardian angel really coddled and worshipped the kid as if he is God's greatest gift to the whole universe (even though Pasquale himself really knows better). In addition, the frequent use of the bright orange-yellow sunset color for the sky and Peekaboo exploding into a gigantic furball are getting a tad tedious lately. But other than that, let's say hats off to Pat Brady's marvelous ability to fantasize and thus capture it all on the paper!

But with the sudden appearance of Victoria, the wife who once abandoned Ryan, and the five-year-old son he never knew he had, come threats endangering the lives of everyone involved. Between the deadly forces of war and two loves, McGraw is caught with a heart divided.
Story Behind the Book
“While studying American history in high school, I was struck with a strange fascination for the Civil War. That fascination grew stronger when I studied it again in college, and I’ve visited many of the sites where the battles took place. When I visited the Appomattox Court House in Virginia , where General Robert E. Lee signed the documents of surrender before General Ulysses S. Grant, I was struck with the thought of creating a series of novels based upon specific battles in the Civil War. I wanted to mold fictional characters with real ones and fill the stories with romance, suspense, intrigue, and the excitement of battle. That’s how the Battles of Destiny series came to be.” —Al Lacy

wonderful experience.......2006-02-24
Mr. Jim Rich and Mr.Blackwell really created a wonderful piece of art, in writing Broken Promise. Equal contributions by Mr. Rich as the storyteller , molding the concept, and Mr. Blackwell the novel wordsmith made for a grand short book with value that is deep and wide.
I would add that it took me a solid week to read this piece for the very reason that I hung onto every event as it unfolded.I savored every moment of the experience. I would recommend it to anyone, and do.

Quick read, interesting characters.......2006-02-07
Unbroken Promise explores the growth of a young man from Cleburne, Texas, as he takes a motorcycle trip with his Dad from Texas to Alaska, a trip his Dad promised some 15 years earlier. Along the way both men grow in their personal relationship and meet people which will have a profound affect of both of their lives but particularly in regards to the worldview of the son, Davey. A quick read and well written with several interesting characters which helps keep the pages turning. My only gripe is that the story often "tells" you how Davey is feeling rather than "showing" how Davey is feeling. Also the author must be very fond of "a good night's sleep" because pratically every night ends or every morning begins with a revelation of how some character in the book is going to sleep that night or how they slept last night. Other than those two items, I enjoyed the book and look forward to future books the author might (should) write. His writing style is enjoyable and well paced. There really aren't any slow spots and we are reminded at the end of the book the importance of not just making promises but keeping promises.

Mitchell Taylor has materfully outlined a recipe for learning to trust and love again.
UNBROKEN PROMISES chronicles a method of repairing ones heart and restoring self to a place of openness and vulnerabilty. The outlines and descriptions in the book helped me to see my self and what devestation has occured to me as a result of coutlless unbroken promises.
This book should come with a key to the heart and mind, for it truly unloked my emotional boundage and taught me to love and trust again.
Unbroken Promises.......2003-02-20
I highly recommend this book. This book helps individuals that have been hurt through broken promises in their lives. It will guide you to a place of trusting again. The book gives indepth insight on how to tear down the walls of insecurity and walls of protection. These walls are built because of past hurts and disappointments through broken promises. It also shows how God is one who never breaks a promise. A great book.

STILL LAUGHING!!!.......2004-03-19
I never thought I'd actually see the day that this load of garbage actually found a publisher!!! I was stationed with these chowder-heads and even went to training in Pensacola with most of them. Vance, while a friendly guy, was never considered anything CLOSE to being a soldier.... noted throughout the unit for being a compulsive liar. For example, he told me several times that he had been on the Olympic Baseball Team, and had written a smash hit song for late-80's popster Aldo Nova. I have NO idea how this guy ever got a security clearance higher than Confidential. He had recently bought an East German Army uniform that fit him, so when this happened, many of us in the unit thought that they had gone over The Wall - it would have been the kind of thing Vance would do... then he would have driven the E. Germans nuts and gotten sent back with a fat lip! Huckstedt and the other young guys were good fellas, I think they just got caught up in something where they felt important and were led on by older soldiers whom they wanted acceptance from. Because of these lunatics, we had constant midnight inspections (they had apparently left word in a letter that others would be joining them), and had "End of The World" parties annually on the day that they had predicted The End would be for several years afterward. Trust me...if higher intelligence from The Great Beyond was looking for someone on Earth to talk to and save, it would have been a group far less pitiful and goofy. The leaders of this thing misled and abused the trust of younger soldiers who had promising futures - and they betrayed their country and uniform. I'm still laughing, with a sad smile. Vance D.... where are you now, tusker?
Apocalyspe Now - Apparently Not!.......2001-08-13
Some events happened to me in 1977 that made me feel very confident that many really big changes were going to happen, and I was certain that the changes would start happening in about 1995, oddly enough about the time of this book's publication. The things that happened to me were not in any way the same as what happened to Vance Davis and the "Gulf Breeze 6," yet reading parts of this book, especially the predictions of apocalypse, reminded me of visions I had as well as intuitions i.e, "things are so messed up in this world, it just can't go on the way it is!"
Only it's 2001 as I write this review, and from my point of view none of the big changes happened, and thus while I liked "Unbroken Promises," I was soured by the parts that predict apocalypse and have, at least to this date, been proven wrong over and over. Personally I also don't react very favorably when dire predictions are made and then the "prophet" claims that they didn't come to pass because people "woke up," or whatever excuse can be thought of.
"Unbroken Promises" is first of all Mr. Davis's autobiography. He is a psychic trained in Silva Mind Control who eventually goes to work for the NSA. Davis, who is also keenly interested in consciousness expansion, learns how to go into deep meditative states, to the point of meeting spirit guides, such as Kia, who claims to be from a planet forty-five light years away. Yet Mr. Davis also is a religious, or better-stated, spiritual man, and he repeatedly asks Jesus for help in all his endeavors. To some having contact with aliens while believing in Christ might seem strange!
The real story of "Unbroken Promises" occurs during the summer of 1990, when Davis and 5 other mililtary personnel begin to dabble in the paranormal while stationed in Germany, eventually to the point of communicating with spirits through an Ouija board. They have 7 sessions with these spirits. At first there isn't a totally religious overtone, but quickly more spirits come through, and almost all of these spirits use the names of apostles of Jesus. The messages they give are a mixture of good ol' Biblical global apocalypse, a la the Book of Revelations, along with specific directions to the 6 humans to leave their posts and return to America, to help with the "big changes" that are imminent. They are told not only the approximate date to go AWOL, but also, repeatedly, that they will be protected from danger.
So the 6 do go AWOL, ending up in Gulf Breeze, FL. Unfortunately they are caught, and initially are treated like hardened criminals who have engaged in espionage. After about 3 weeks of imprisonment, during which the story becomes a public scandal, they are not only released, but almost unbelievably are given a choice - they can actually remain in the military or receive honorable discharges (they of course choose the latter)! In short, all the predictions that the spirit guides make concerning their welfare come true (assuming none are omitted, and I question that). We are told implicitly and explicitly that in fact the 6 do have "friends in high places," and one of the important points made in the book is that the US govt. is divided into "good" and "bad" factions.
What is a bit "unkosher" about the book is the claim by the authors (mostly via the channeling from the Ouija board) that Mr. Davis and
company are going to play a very important in the "awakening" of humanity during the aforementioned apocalyse, the apocalyse that in my view still shows little indication of happening. And indeed almost all of the really dire events listed towards the end of the book, such as riots in many major cities, the widespread institution of martial law, and particularly the coming of the Peacemaker/anti-Christ, have simply not come to pass, which is why I question whether Mr. Davis supplies a complete list of predictions concerning his group going AWOL.
Still, "Unbroken Promises" is surely an intriguing book to read and ponder, and I have no doubt about Mr. Davis's sincerity. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the accounts of 3 females who were involved in the arrest of the Gulf Breeze 6 (one who had gone AWOL, plus 2 friends, one of whom Mr. Davis had seen in a dream 10 years before and became his wife!). The final part of the book are the documents that back up what was written about the imprisonment and release of the 6.

Powerful commentary on the most volatile international event of the year--the conflict in Kosovo.
This is the first book in any language to bring together--in powerful point-counterpoint format--political, ethical, and cultural commentary on the Kosovo conflict by internationally renowned contributors. Also woven into the book are moving firsthand stories of the suffering Balkan people.
Composed of some sixty essays written in dialog with one another, the book contains assessments by noted politicians and analysts (Henry Kissinger, Juergen Haberman, Zbigniew Brzezinski), government officials (Javier Solana, Kofi Annan, Vaclav Havel, Morton Halperin), award-winning journalists (Mark Danner, Tim Judah, Robert Kaplan), human rights advocates (Julie Mertus), theologians and ethicists (Jean Bethke Elshtain, Brian Hehir, David Little, Vatican Archbishop Tauran, Stanley Harakas), historians (Miranda Vickers), military leaders (General Wesley Clark), and many other key figures.
This book also includes photos, maps, a time line, a list of key names, NATO objectives, and online resources for further study of this critical regional conflict with worldwide implications.

An Extraordinary Book - Will Enlighten and Challenge Us All.......2003-09-24
I could not put this book down. The author explores the various sides, themes, and politics of the Balkan crisis. No voice is silenced but all voices are given time to speak. It is fair, accurate, and unbiased in its look at the terrible crimes perpetrated on the Bosnian people. Beautifully written and full of compassionate insights.

Customer Reviews:
Great research book .......2004-09-08
Through the use of diaries and letters, this book tells what ordinary women in Confederate States were doing at home during the Civil War. There is great detail about what rural farm women were doing as well as plantation dwellers. Most other books I have read contain letters and diary entries from privileged women. This book has those descriptions, but also gives voice to women who were renting or leasing their land without the benefit of slaves. The book describes travel, services, shortages, daily life, fears, and emotions. Actual processes are detailed for making shoes, hats, clothes, rather than simply mentioning that the women were making them.
