Book Description

The charming and innovative architecture of these tiny cottages, studios, fishing huts, homes and more--so small and cute that you can't help but fall for them--will inspire and delight home and architecture lovers and dreamers, too. Each chapter captures the utter eccentricity of these ingeniously designed shelters with irresistible color photographs of the structure and interiors alongside detailed isometric drawings, floor plans, and multiple elevations. A Little House of My Own offers humble dreams of solitude, romance, oasis for meditation and whimsy--all under 325 square feet--as well as technical details of the structure from the building materials and woodworking techniques to estimated cost of construction. In the accompanying text, award-winning architect Lester Walker relates the story of each building, the community or setting where it is located, and the personalities that shaped it. Notably quaint homes from history, including Jefferson's Honeymoon Cottage, Henry Thoreau's Cabin, and George Bernard Shaw's Writing Hut, and features on wacky specialty houses are sure to inspire and delight.

3 out of 5 stars Looks Good...But.......2007-04-16

The quality of the book's construction, layout, pictures, and organization is veyr nice. This definetly makes a nice book for reading in a doctor's office.

The author clearly states that the book provides little in the way of specific construction methods for small homes or floor plans. The floor plans could have been at least double the size that they are. There is too much white space on the pages with the floor plans. I almost needed a magnifying glass to read the notes on the floor plans.

There are lots of pictures from the outside of the homes - perhaps drive-by pictures. There are very little pictures on the inside of the homes. The efficient use of less space could have been better addressed with pictures and sketches.

The bottom line: If you want a nice looking book with an interesting topic, buy it. If you want substance, look somewhere else.

4 out of 5 stars a delightful little book.......2005-05-10

I came across this book after reading Michael Pollan's excellent _A Place of My Own: The Education of an Amateur Builder_, in which it is mentioned that the Lester Walker book _Tiny Tiny Houses_ had helped inspire Pollan to build his own little writing cabin. This book, _A Little House of My Own_, is effectively an update and expansion of _Tiny Tiny Houses_. (At the time of this writing, Amazon has paired the two Lester Walker books for its "buy this book with ..." feature; don't be fooled into buying both books!)

I quite enjoyed _A Little House of My Own_, and am a bit surprised at the number of reviewers here who were disappointed by it. My best guess is that they were expecting something other than what they got, and they didn't see beyond that to what the book does have to offer: it is a fascinating study of simplicity in architectural design, and presents a refreshing counterpoint to the current trend of constructing soulless McMansions. The book's history of very small houses and workspaces, illustrated by forty-seven different examples, is a welcome reminder that people can live well in much less space than so many of us are now accustomed to.

While this book contains drawings and floorplans to accompany its photographs, the material given is not enough on its own to use as a guide for construction. Walker states in his introduction that the beginning builder who wants to try putting up a small cabin like one of the ones presented should "read one or two of the basic housebuilding books listed in the Bibliography and then become very friendly with a local housebuilder." The intention is not to provide templates for construction, but to help get people thinking about the space they occupy, how to use it best, and ideally to inspire them to design and build a place to call their own.

As a city dweller renting my apartment, I'm not going to be doing any construction work anytime soon. But I would like to, one day, and if I do, I will definitely want to have this book on hand as a reference. The combination of history and technical information presented here is unusual and eye-opening.

1 out of 5 stars I don't think so........2003-10-14

These houses would be interesting to live in, if you don't mind living in houses WITHOUT BATHROOMS! Nice houses to look at, and one or two might be nice to build (two out of the whole 48 could be liveable as a weekend getaway), but if you're looking to buy a housebuilding book to actually build a house, look the other way. Les Walker must be running out of ideas because it's just a reprint of his first book. I doubt HE lives in a 250 square foot house with no bathroom and an igloo cooler for a refrigerator. C'MON LES, SNAP OUT OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy with Tiny tiny Houses!!.......2003-01-21

Unless Amazon made an error these books are exactly the same. I bought Tiny Tiny Houses a year ago and just discovered that the contents of A little house of my own is the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2002-02-16

I have been looking for ideas for a cabin I plan to build and live in full time. This book did not offer much along those lines. The variety of "houses" was surprisingly vast, but as far as structures one could actually live in it was slim pickin's. From an ice fishing shanty to a canvas house this was an interesting read, but didn't offer the sort of home where one would place the computer desk and hang a picture. As a collection it is interesting and sometimes fun. But I don't regard this book as much help for someone wanting to actually wind up with a place to call home.

I am always looking for fresh new ideas for photographing brides and weddings...needless to say, these ideas were not found in this book. Most of the photos had to have been taken in the 80's, with big puffy sleeved dresses and bad hair. Too much soft lens work and WAY too posed...save your money.

2 out of 5 stars Very average ideas.......2004-07-20

We have been in business for over 15 years and are looking for new ideas. This book is the same old stuff. There must be a book out there with fresh new poses? This book is plain boring!

3 out of 5 stars Intricate, complex and elaborate feast for the eyes.......2003-03-20

Marty Seefer has produced a beautiful book packed with elegant images showing his approach to bridal photography. His approach, unfortunately, is beyond the reach of the beginning wedding photographer and many intermediates. His style is very complex, intricate, and elaborate, often requiring as many as eight lights for a studio shot. Photographers who have reached the level of success where they have the studio space and materials necessary to execute many of these photographs probably already have their own successful styles and do not need this book.
There is some valuable information for those attempting to get started or grow in the business - particular in the area of metering a set and dragging the shutter to assure correct metering of everthing in the set - and most of Seefer's sets are extremely elaborate. Whether it is necessary or even desirable to create such elaborate settings, or if they are so complex that they distract the viewer away from the center of interest - the bride - is up to the viewer to decide.
The photographer, regardless of level, should keep in mind while enjoying this feast for the eyes, is that Seefer's way is not the only way to produce beautiful portraits of brides. This is why books, such as The Best of Wedding Photography by Bill Hurter which shows the work of many top photographers, is much more valuable to those attempting to launch a career in the business than the long-evolved style of just one individual.

4 out of 5 stars If you have this book, you can photograph a bride........2002-08-17

One of the reasons I like Amherst Media's books is because everything is spelled out in easy to understand terms and visuals are always provided. "The Art of Bridal Portrait Photography" by Marty Seefer isn't any different. The author holds nothing back and shares his experiences as an award winning photographer as a true teacher would.
Subjects covered include: Portraitist vs. Journalist, Previsualization, Metering, Film Tests, Planes of Exposure, studio shooting, Location Portraits and a Bridal Study Suggestion Sheet. Also covered are Studio Lighting, Lighting Ratios and Corrective Techniques. All subjects are generously illustrated with drawings and beautiful photographs. Whether you are new to bridal photography or are an experienced pro, this book has something of interest for you.

      Book Description

In January 1998, while the rest of her newsroom is chasing the Monica Lewinsky story, television journalist Jennifer Cohen gets a lead that takes her out of covering that scandal and deep into another one—the trafficking of sex slaves from the former Soviet Union into the United States. Knowing that the college crush she never quite forgot works for a St. Petersburg newspaper, she hires him to help out. Much to their surprise, they fall madly in love over thousands of miles of telephone line. Within weeks, Cohen finds herself engaged to marry a man she barely knows and on a plane to Russia. No one could have predicted the total collapse that followed—of the Russian economy, of her fiancé’s sobriety, of Cohen's mental health and physical safety, and of her professional aspirations.
Cohen's vivid descriptions of her life in anything-goes Moscow—bribing government officials, meeting pimps in back alleys for interviews, being told by her boss to perpetuate American clichés about Russia in her pieces—are a colorful counterpart to the despair and loneliness that replaces the love between Cohen and her betrothed. Their battles with prescription drugs, alcoholic rages, and physical abuse are recounted with perspective and wit, offering a smart, poignant, and unvarnished look at a complicated relationship in a complicated land.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lying to each other.......2005-06-11

A tragic comedy in many parts, "Lying together" has a clear double meaning, as we read about two very dysfunctional people lying to themselves as they lie in bed together in seedy Russian apartments.

I have to say that enjoyed this book, yet also warn potential readers that the story has all the elements of a college-educated person's version of the Jerry Springer show. There are just so many bad decisions, alcoholic episodes, disorders, abused drugs, manic-depressive states, states of denial, blind spots, and excessive bravado. If this had been a novel, it may have been dismissed as too incredible to be true. Having spent some time in Russia in the 1990's, my sense is that book brings all too true. Sad, very sad, but true.

By e-mail, Cohen falls inexplicably even irrationally for a less-than-almost crush, Kevin, and agrees to fly off to Russia, on a whim and promise of a political scandal. Perhaps she suffered to take on this relationship for the same reason she suffered from bulimia. She ought to know: her parents are a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist. She wants to deny that children of such parents can produce dysfunctional kids. The fact that the family talks about everything - her evidence of their normality - does not provide much cover for what is better described as some major gaps in translating values across generations.

Once back in Moscow (she had studied there years earlier), she jumps right into a death defying if not death wish desire to document the sex and slave trade emanating from a scandalous, corrupt Russian society. The crush provides the contacts, the translation precision, and the stimulus to push the journalistic envelope. Only too soon does Cohen learn that her business is less about breaking stories and more about confirming clichés. And her stomping grounds, St. Petersburg and Moscow, offer plentiful fodder for clichés. She is most compelling when she documents the difficulty of life in these two cities today, from the violence, to the bribes, to the petty and not-so-petty corruption, the terrible architecture, the strip joints and gun-toting security guards, the tiny, rusty, domestic, automobiles alongside gleaming SUVs, the ongoing fatal fascination with cigarettes and vodka. The problem seems to be that she and Kevin fit too well into this marginal life, where living on the edge is the only place to live.

Yes, the book is enjoyable, sometimes pretentious, and compelling (I read it in less than 24 hours, eager to see how Cohen pulls out of this mess). But it is a dark, stormy ride, giving me the most satisfaction to be able to say that I am glad that I was not foolish enough to engage in such a crazy pursuit. That's why Jerry Springer can be satisfying: I'm just glad that it wasn't me. At least Jen and Kevin earn some sympathy. Good luck in their next endeavors.

3 out of 5 stars A GREAT SHORT STORY WITH LOCAL COLOR.......2005-03-23

This is a great quick read. I have been to Moscow and Petersburg and agree with most of her descriptions about life there. Cohen captures a sense of place and immediacy. Her characters are colorful considering how quickly they come and go. She's clever and witty with a dark edge. It is not great literature but very good journalism like a long long short story in the New Yorker. Read it if you are a adventure traveler or wished you could be.

4 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next book!.......2005-03-11

What a pleasure to be in the hands of a writer whose insight and honesty matches her skill as a writer. I've never traveled to Russia, but having lived abroad, I related to Cohen's emotional trajectory as she falls head over heels in love with the country and a man, and then tries to sustain the high as she loses her grasp on the things (and person) that matter to her most. Her writing is witty, heartfelt and intelligent and never becomes self-pitying or self-aggrandizing. After finishing her book, I feel like I have the capacity to live more bravely and expressively.

      4 out of 5 stars Subtly witty.......2005-03-08

Ms. Cohen's is a subtle wit. Her open account is slightly self-mocking and conveys to the reader both her passion and vulnerability in a thoroughly entertaining read. The author embraces the very flaws in herself and her environment that both thrill us and make us cringe. Ultimately, the book is a comming of age story. It demonstrates a deep self awareness and self appreciation that many of us spend a lifetime working toward.

5 out of 5 stars I know where "Kevin" is!.......2005-03-08

or at least I think I would know where he might be - licking his wounds and envious.

If I were "Kevin", as a writer, I would be jealous at the critical success of Ms. Cohen's book. I found this book to be beautifully written, painfully honest, witty and hard to put down. "Kevin" must be wishing he had such talent or success as a writer.

And as a spurned lover, "Kevin" must be pained at his failings and his personal story put "out there" - although I think the author wrote about the failed relationship with sensitivity as well as self-awarness of the role she herself played.

I loved this book. I am eager to read more from this promising new writer.

            Book Description

British Counterinsurgency examines the insurgencies that have confronted the British State since the end of the Second World War, and at the methods used to fight them. It looks at the guerrilla campaigns in Palestine, Malaya, Kenya, Cyprus, South Yemen, Oman, and most recently in Northern Ireland, and considers the reasons for British success or failure in suppressing them. It provides a hard-nosed account of the realities of counterinsurgency as practiced by the most experienced security establishment in the world today.

4 out of 5 stars An Intellectual Work.......2007-06-27

Very informative intellectual work. Serious and rich analysis of all cases covered. Highly recommended as a reference for the serious researcher.

            4 out of 5 stars Counterinsurgency Overview.......2007-03-29

Newsinger's book on British Counterinsurgency deals with most of the post WWII End of Empire and the 'retreat to East of Suez' events and how each was dealt with successfully & otherwise.
Certainly a deal of information can be gleaned but does require a knowledge of British politics and Army personnel. However it appears that the author never served & thus gleaned his information from other sources.
That little ring of authenticity that only can come from one who 'did his time' is not there, but for a broad sweep overview this is one for the bookshelf.

                Book Description

In Gaia's Gift, Anne Primavesi asks that we complete the ideological revolution concerning human importance which was set in motion by Copernicus and developed by theorists such as Charles Darwin. This radical thinking of Copernicus and Darwin challenged the traditional notion that humans had a god-given centrality within the universe and within the Earth's history. Yet, as we continue to exploit the Earth's natural resources and species, it seems that we remain wedded to the theological assumption that these are there for our sole use and benefit.
Drawing on James Lovelock's Gaia theory-the understanding of the Earth as a living organism-Gaia's Gift, raises the question of our proper place within the universe and turns decisively towards an understanding of ourselves as dependent on, rather than in control of, the whole Earth community.

                5 out of 5 stars A Modern Synthesis.......2003-11-09

"Gaia's Gift" brings together many threads of modern knowledge and great issues of concern such as threats to earth integrity and unjustice between nations and individuals. These are placed in the context of a critical history of religion, especially the Judeo-Christian tradition. The organization and prose make these potentially difficult and complex analyses relatively easy to follow and remember.

As I am a scientist with no formal training in Theology or church history, Primavesi's books have helped me to understand why the scientific findings that are so compelling to me are rejected by a large proportion of society. Furthermore, why I should be concerned to increase social consciousness of the impact of religion on civil and social practice.

On the other hand, many of my scientist friends dismiss all religious belief and practice with scorn. "Gaia's Gift" would help them to understand that impulses of awe, joy, and thankfulness are fully appropriate as we accept our gift of life that has been prepared by earth and the web of life throughout deep time and in the present.
