You name it she tells you how to do it. For beginner & Intermediate silk painters. Educational, Informative and well formatted. My only suggestion is a ring binding so the book could lay flat when it is being used for refeence.

An excellent, comprehensive guide for the beginning silk painter. The author demonstrates many inspirational designs and recommends her preferences for dyes (by brand), gutta, and other resist options. I've not painted on silk before and, after reading this book, I feel I have all the knowledge I need to begin painting on silk.

Good Inspiration.......2002-08-18
This book has great, inspirational photos and very good instructions. My main disappointment with it is the authors attitude toward silk paints (i.e., not dyes). I have used several varieties of the paints that are made to mimic dyes and find them to work very well, leave the silk soft and be very easy to use. They are a great way for a beginner to get started and try most of the same techniques used with dyes without the hassle of steaming or the toxicity. I am glad that I had some experience silk painting before I got this book because her attitude would have discouraged me from every trying. Aside from that - it's an excellent book, worth the price and full of great pictures to inspire you.
ONE STOP SILK PAINTING BOOK - INSPIRIATIONAL.......2001-11-15
This is THE best book I have read on silk painting and I have't seen another to better it in the past 10 years. There ARE other books on the same subject that are good, but I certainly haven't felt the need to purchase another since I thumbed through this beauty!
Everything you could possibly want to know in relation to silk painting is covered in a consise and presise manner. This is supported by photo demostrations for various techniques not easily explained through the written word. The authors pratical experience shines through in the text and fablously gorgeous photos of her and other artists work.
The book is full colour with lots and lots of sensational photos. Much of the silk painting shown is very detailed work eg flowers, pictures; rather than overall "textures" or designs which is more often what you find in other books on the same subject.
Seriously consider this fantastic book if you are interested in this subject, it is worth every $, if only for the inspiration provided by the fablous photos

The Blue Pixel Guide to Travel Photography: Perfect Photos Every Time
Have you ever bought something that says "one size fits all" and it fits? Yeah, me too. Something that attempts to appear to everyone in reality appeals to no one. This book was designated by Peachpit as "beginner/intermediate" but I found most of it too difficult for me as a budding photographer and those things I did learn from the book probably would have frustrated an intermediate user. When I think "beginner", I want to be walked through the very basics. Schloss started the book expecting that you had a small arsenal of photography equipment. This book isn't for someone who has a $300 digital camera, but someone who has a much more advanced digital camera, light meters, multiple lenses and a bunch of other stuff I didn't understand.
This book is geared towards someone who already has a photography kit and wants to learn tips and tricks on how to travel with their equipment. For example, Schloss mentions you should ship your clothes to your destination and then carry your camera equipment on the plane. Clothes can easily be replaced, camera equipment can't. This advice is not for someone that is bringing the family digital camera on a trip to Grand Canyon.
My major concern with the book is that if someone owns several thousand dollars of camera equipment, they probably wouldn't be considered a beginning user. Maybe it's just me, but I would not spend $2000 in equipment and then pick up a beginner's book. I'd first learn how to use professional equipment and then buy an advanced book.
In spite of my complaints about the book, I found parts of it helpful. There were a few pages about composing a photo using a "grid" which I had read in "iPhoto: The Missing Manual." Other tips regarding photographing individuals or sports events required you to have a quiver of lenses to choose from to get the right shot.
A nice feature of the book is that it was visually stunning. Every few pages had amazing pictures taken from around the world. These photographers clearly are masters of their craft and a advanced digital photographer will probably be reminded of how to set an f-stop or how much light to let in for a particular photograph. We beginners just like looking at pretty pictures!
This is not a beginner book and intermediate users will only benefit if they have a set of professional or at least "prosumer" camera equipment and lenses. That person isn't me, so I found the book of very little help.
Pros: Pretty pictures
Cons: The pretty pictures require several thousand dollars worth of equipment.

years of photography experience (photojournalism, commercial,
teaching).
The book is divided into 7 chapters. Just about every page
has at least one color photograph (with red colored descriptive text) to further explain the topic being discussed. Most pages also have a blue colored text tips section in which the authors/contributors give their real-world experience
(tricks of the trade).
Chapter 1 describes how to choose the right gear for your trip.
Selecting the right camera (point and shoot versus Digital SLR), lens, memory cards, backup hardware (laptop, mobile hard drives). This chapter has the best explanation of lens aperture I have ever read.
Chapter 2 describes what to take and what to leave home for your
trip. Some examples are: power adapters, secondary batteries, charges, tripods, flashes, manuals, filters, etc.). Considerations are discussed on the length and type of trip is planned.
Chapter 3 describes preparing for your photographic adventure.
Here the author emphasizes the importance of researching the
geographical location, weather, customs, language, and local events of your destination before you leave for your trip to maximize your photographic experiences. "A Photographic
Journey is 80 percent preparation and 20 percent vacation".
Some of the methods described are : using the internet, magazines, books, libraries, travel agents. There is one tip in this section which I never would have thought of on how to find out more about your destination from a photographer's perspective. You will have to buy the book to find out what it is.
Chapter 4 describes how a good attitude makes good pictures.
Here the reader is informed on your need to understand the local
culture, language and customs of the people for the more productive pictures and avoid any potential problems.
Chapter 5 describes how to photograph the world once you
arrive at your destination. Examples include: what to shoot,
when to shoot it, how to shoot it, and what equipment to use.
This comprehensive chapter consists of 50 pages.
Chapter 6 describes how to manage your gear and your photos on the road. Emphasis is on proper backup of your digital photos and file naming suggestions.
Chapter 7 describes sharing your photos with the world. Many ideas from making prints to creating images for the web are discussed and what hardware and software to use.
Summary: Every level of photographer will benefit from reading this book whether you are planning a day trip within your area or a two week trip to another country. You will have a better and more productive photographic experience on your next trip.
Finally, if there is one suggestion I would make to the author
is to include a pullout cheat sheet which condenses/summarizes
the key points from each chapter to take along with you on your travels. Overall I highly recommend this book and the price of the book with an online discount makes it very reasonable and a very good value.

Hillariously whitty. If you've ever tried slimming, especially for extended periods of time you'll have to at least give a giggle reading the descriptions. On a more serious note, it has helped me to put a little more perspective on my need to be fashionably slim. We have all been brainwashed to beliving that thin is in, so whether you are a dieter or have ever watched the extent that family or friends have gone to to lose weight, you'll find this a good read.

Mortimore details the detrimental effects of the typical Western diet's overabundance of animal fat, salt, sugar, processed foods, stimulants, and chemicals. She also goes into detail defining a well-balanced diet--so much detail that only serious students of nutrition will attempt to absorb it all. For optimum health, "every meal should be a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and essential fatty acids, and at the same time attempt to achieve 80 percent alkaline-forming and neutral foods to 20 percent acid-forming foods," Mortimore recommends. One section includes descriptions of 39 important vitamins, minerals, and trace elements; how each is utilized and needed; and where each is found in food. The book includes helpful chapters on how diet affects health, including allergies and food intolerance, blood sugar balance, and weight management. A great book to get you started on the road to wellness.......1999-07-29
The book was easy to understand, easy to follow and easy to incorporate into your diet. It may not be the most complete book on the subject of nutrition, but it has excellent advice, great places to start and specific topics to peruse.
Everyone is looking toward nutrition to help them out with specific problem areas, this book does just that. It shows you what is good and what is bad for specific illnesses, and symptoms. I particulary liked the glycemic portion of the glucose chapter, it puts into perfect perspective which foods are worse, better and best to control your glucose level. Since many illnesses are now attributed to insulin resistance (like PCO, diabetes, prostate problems) I thought this section was particulary enlightening.The herbs, minerals and vitamins in each portion were very well documented also, and relevant to each health area being discussed.
Its an excellent place to start for those travelling down the road of natural healing.
A very good reference guide! However.................1999-01-01
I am impressed! Not Blown-Away.....but impressed! A few items like the "New Food Pyramid" and the "Health Concern Assessment" section are extremely valuable (Especially for the layman).
As a Professional Nutritional Advisor though, I was a little disappointed that a publication of this high quality (Great questionnaires, great illistrations, good general health information, etc.) was lacking as much as it was. There is a section in vitamins and minerals for instance and later it touches on some herbs. What about other nutrients that don't fall into those categories?
For example: One particular nutrient (Lyprinol) is a marine lipid extract that comes from the New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussle. This Super-Nutrient is THE MOST POWERFUL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY on the planet but was somehow overlooked.
Another example: Years ago Professor Dr. Jack Masquelier discovered and patented THE MOST POWERFUL ANTI-OXIDANT on the planet. This nutrient is Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins. His formulation (OPC-85) is still unmatched by any other anti-oxidant claiming it is also an OPC. Yet this vital nutrient was completely overlooked as were several others like Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane (MSM), Detailed Amino Acids, Glucosamine Sulfate, Glucosamine HCI, N-Acetyl-Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, Collagen Hydrolysate and many, many more.
The recipe, medicine chest, common ailments and food combining sections were Ok but again lacked any substance.
The various DIET sections are not as good as I'd like to see. Example: Someone who is obese would not want to follow this plan as it suggests carbs.
Overall this is a good reference and is a welcome addition to any home or office but I personally would not rely on it as my sole reference.
I have been providing free nutritional advise, counciling and training for years and I welcome any thoughts or questions someone may have.

as with his previous books, Mr. leckie has created a personal, and down to earth look at one of the most heroic battles in history. mr. leckie brings the reader right into the foxholes of the men who refused to surrender to overwhelming forces in the frozen highlands of north korea. i believe it a must read for anyone who is a student of history, of gallentry, and a believer in honor.

Born into a prosperous North Carolina family with business ties in the North, Charlie decides to become a soldier when North Carolina secedes from the Union. Against his father's wishes, he joins the Virginia Military Institute to become a good fighting soldier for the honor of his state and his country. The war, he believes, was started over states' rights but was now becoming a war over slavery.
Through Charlie's relationships with and observations about his Southern family, VMI cadets and upperclassmen, we experience the internal psychological and real toll on the Southern family unit and social group in terms of emotions and economics. The external economics of the plantation system and slavery are clear, too. Hard work, long hours of study, little food and belittling relationships with upperclassmen and close, cherished friendships with other new cadets are all here. Characters have pasts and personalities. The reader is a witness in real time to real people. Even Charlie's brief capture by Union soldiers has unusual depth as he dramatically shares his fear and his discovery that a Union soldier is capable of compassion. Although the South is ill-equipped for war, the pervading feeling is that it will fight to the death to preserve its way of life. Therefore, when the VMI Corps of Cadets supports General John C. Breckenridge's forces in Staunton, Virginia, we see an extraordinary battle scene.
March of Glory is an American novel of human feelings, honor, values and soldiering. It is superb!

For dreamers like me.......2003-01-28
I was once telling my Dad, a sea captain, how much I wanted to become a treasure hunter. The story of Mel Fisher was so compelling to me, all I needed, I told my dad, was a few million dollars to get started and some good maps.
He laughed and teased me, then, upon a return trip from Florida, he brought me this book, and old "treasure" map and some fake "tourist" treasure all to get me started.
I was completely fascinated by the accounts in this book. It is a couple of hundred pages long and each of the eleven chapters covers a different treasure. The book covers the history behind the treasure as well as accounts of people trying to find the various hoards hidden, it seems, forever. Or perhaps the treasure was never left behind in the first place, but the idea that "some" of it may still be there is enough to make any treasure hunter feel a bit driven to want to go and see for themselves.
This book is history and story, it is not in any way a guide to go looking for treasure nor do the authors give encouragement to the reader that if they are lucky and resourceful they might make history themselves. But for anyone interested in the history of some great pirate stories and modern accounts of treasure hunting, or for dreamers like myself, I recommend this book. It is fun and well written.
Pieces of Eight.......2002-09-18
This is not a guide book for treasure hunters. What it is is an entertaining read. It details several stories of buried treasure from Cocos Island to Mahe in the Seychelles. Providing a good deal of background information on the area and characters involved in each story. Tantalizing details are presented, that almost make you believe that the stories might be true.
The reality is pirates didn't bury treasure, they spent it, some few invested it and retired wealthy, but the vast majority squandered their riches on booze and women. Never-the-less, the lure of money for nothing, just waiting to be dug up, will always have some pulling out a shovel and pick to go hunting. And let's face it, we all dream about it. P-)
