    Book Description

Alberto Pinto is among the most celebrated interior designers at work today. Here he turns his eye to the wonders of the East and a series of interiors inspired by the colors and textures of Morocco, Byzantium, India, and beyond.
Included in this book are interiors in Europe, North America, and North Africa belonging to the jet set and modern elite. Each interior celebrates opulence, whether with fine damasks and silks, intricate tilework, or glittering objets d'art. Included are other visual stage sets for living that are as breathtaking as they are original-vast terraces over sumptuous gardens, shimmering swimming pools open to the sea and sky, filtered light bouncing off floor-to-ceiling mirrors reflecting an infinity of precious woods in an exquisite parquet floor. Pinto designs spaces to delight the senses, and the publication of Orientalism will usher in a new era of sensuality in interior design.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful.......2006-03-03

The information inside this book made me understand the basics of the Sumi-e art. I have little knowledge on painting, and most of it on olio based paints. The simplicity of this tecnic it's astonishing, and this book show the different stages, from basic strokes to complex creations.
Very good piece to have in your collection if you are an art enthusiast.

2 out of 5 stars Better go with his other book.......2006-01-06

I've purchased both of Lian Quan Zhen books, "Chinese WC Techniques: Painting Animals" and "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquiste Watercolors". Painting Animals has the initial info that is supplied in his Exquisite Watercolor book. He does go into more animals in Painting Animals but Exquisite Watercolor provides all you need and I think it's a better book.

4 out of 5 stars Chinese Brush Painting Animals Kit.......2006-08-08

This Kit helped me get started in chinese animal brush painting. It offers clear directions. The brushes are not the best quality, but using your own brushes is just fine. My 13 year old nephew also enjoyed following the directions in painting a tiger.

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat it for the price.......2006-02-28

Great kit. I bought it and Chinese brush painting. My kids and I are doing some art together, and these kits were just what we needed. All you need to add is some newsprint to practice on. A wonderful introduction. If you really get involved, you would want to move on to some advanced texts, but for someone just starting out, I highly recommend these.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow what a book.......2005-11-20

There I was thinking I knew about taking photograhs, but I learnt such a lot, and the sample pictures demonstrate with great clarity what the focus should and can be.

As a result I am now looking for more books from Michael Coyne.

3 out of 5 stars some useful tips..........2005-09-21

I bought the lonely planet travel photography guide a few years ago and absolutely loved it! I learned a lot of the basics and really improved my "photo taking" skills. Therefore I was very excited when i found out about the publication of this book. However this people photography guide was disappointing. It provides some useful tips on taking photographs of people but the photos inside the book are not particularly inspiring. Some are good but many are just so-so. (whether one likes a photo or not is very subjective, in my view, but the photos inside this book are really not that exciting. may be i was expecting more from an expert in the field)

    Book Description

The first major biography of legendary war correspondent Martha Gellhorn casts "a vivid spotlight on one of the most undercelebrated women of the 20th century" (Entertainment Weekly)

Martha Gellhorn's heroic career as a reporter brought her to the front lines of virtually every significant international conflict between the Spanish Civil War and the end of the cold war; her wartime dispatches rank among the best of the century. From her birth in St. Louis in 1908 to her death in London in 1998, the tall, glamorous blonde passed through Africa, Cuba, Panama, and most of the great cities of Europe. She made friends easily-among them Eleanor Roosevelt, Leonard Bernstein, and H. G. Wells-but happiness often eluded her despite her professional success: both of her marriages ended badly, the first, to Ernest Hemingway, dramatically and publicly so.

Drawn from extensive interviews and exclusive access to Gellhorn's papers and correspondence, this seminal biography spans half the globe and almost an entire century to offer an exhilarating, intimate portrait of one of the defining women of our times.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fills in the Gaps.......2007-04-03

I have been reading Gellhorn's non-fiction and am generally dispondent that I have found myself at the end of what is readily available. I picked up a copy of Travels with Myself and Another at random and became fascinated by Gellhorn. On the strength of another reviewers recommendation, I selected this book rather than others. I was not disappointed. It is a strange thing to read someone through their own eyes and then to see them without their own filter. Her own professional writing portrays her as a strong woman at ease on her own, while excerpts of her private letters suggest that she was very lonely. In any event, I zipped through the book and was surprised at the manner in which her life ended. Although, on reflection, I shouldn't have been.

5 out of 5 stars Witness to war.......2006-08-13

I found this book thoroughly absorbing, a meal for the intellect and the soul.

Martha Gellhorn was a woman ahead of her time. Carolyn Moorehead does a good job of chronicling each chapter of Gellhorn's illustrious life as a war correspondent and writer. And what an amazing span of history Martha witnessed, from the Spanish Civil War up to the invasion of Panama. A rather fearless woman who "ran with the wolves", Gellhorn had friendships and love affairs with legends. Of course, she is known for having been married to Ernest Hemingway... but she was also friend and confidant of H.G. Wells, Eleanor Roosevelt, Leonard Bernstein... and she crossed paths with Diego Rivera, Colette, Adlai Stevenson, and many other notables of the 20th Century.

Marha really had two great loves in her life: being where the action was, where the great issues of the century were being decided, and secondly , escaping to colorful places where she could find solitude. She best loved the places that afforded freedom and sun, like Mexico, Cuba and Kenya.

Of course, she was full of contradictions, personally, and unsuited for motherhood. I wish only that this book had exposed more of her acute observations about the way that the world works, and her true courage. This is a woman who at 85 yrs. of age, suffering from macular degeneration and other maladies, made a valiant effort to continue speaking for the oppressed.

She was sharp until the end of her days. Moorehead has of this writing published a book of Gellhorn's letters which better illuminates Martha's character, and should serve as a good companion to this biography.

Christiane Amanpour, Lara Logan et. al. owe a great debt to this woman, though they can hardly hope to match her reportorial savvy and brilliance. As Moorehead acknowledges, Martha inspires nostalgia for the days when a reporter went to the core of things, with words honestly written in simple notebooks--words that could be believed.

She believed all governments inexorably abused power. She said of Lyndon Johnson: "Never trust a Texan further than you can throw a rhino."

    Martha, you rocked.

4 out of 5 stars martha gellhorn: well chronicled if not demystified.......2006-05-30

Caroline Moorehead captures the passion of trend-setting journalist Martha Gellhorn in this biography. She follows Gellhorn through the Spanish Civil War, a turbulent marriage to (fellow friend of Spanish loyalists) Ernest Hemingway, and Gellhorn's success in breaking tradition by accompanying the invading Allied armies in World War II. Moorehead's sense of history is acute and she avoids the pitfall of over-dramatizing.

The book falls short only in its failure to resolve the contradictions of Gellhorn's personality...the promiscuous woman who was ambivalent toward sex...the egalitarian who cultivated the high and mighty...the compulsive wanderer and adventurer who cherished the companionship of her mother and close friends. We want to like Gellhorn, but we don't understand her well enough to get there.

5 out of 5 stars Gellhorn: Lightning Rod for Various Opinions.......2006-01-26

Martha Gellhorn was a controversial journalist, and as anyone can see, this biography is either loved or hated without a lot of opinion in between.I fall in the love camp. The book is a good job at capturing the subject, warts and all.The author has clearly gone to great lengths to gather information that allowed her to capture the public and private essence of Gellhorn.Moorehead backed up her presentation many times with quotes from Gellhorn's voluminous correspondence. This is not the author's first biography and it shows;it is a first class job at piecing together the subject's long and complex life. The author is frequently clever in her wording and general handling of the book.If I have any criticism it is that the narrative occasionally moves forward without preparing the reader for a change in subject.
I did not find this book boring. It is a book that would interest most readers that enjoy reading about 20th century history.Gellhorn's strong personality, wartime reporting, travel episodes ,love and sex life, marriage to Hemingway, and general passage through life offer a lot of spice for the reader. Though Gellhorn was a bit prickly or "difficult" at times, she was a witness to a substantial number of historical events. Her reports were first class and continue to be popular today within the reading public (The Face of War,Travels with Myself and Another, etc).Unquestionally she was a controversial character, but she counted and is an appropriate subject of interest.

    4 out of 5 stars Sour Grapes?.......2005-05-25

I'm a Gellhorn fan, no doubt. However, I'm able to separate the journalist from the legend and the myth from the woman, who like so many of us, had clay feet. It's interesting to me how many men develop a virulent dislike of her, while most women can see past her many flaws, admire her courage, and take the inspirational parts of her life for what they are. I suppose if you have very set ideas about what a woman should be like, then Martha Gellhorn's bio is not for you.

However, I'd recommend her work and this biog. For the open minded.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on dealing with, but not curing, autism.......2002-07-22

This book is a wonderful story about a family dealing with a severely handicapped child. The anger, love and desperation all show through Josh's journal entries. Noah never does get better, and you can see the pain this causes his family. There is still no treatment that cures all autistic children, so there are still many families like the Greenfelds.

4 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOY, ETERNAL BOY.......2001-08-21

Noah Jiro Greenfeld, born 7/1/66 appeared to develop normally for the first few months of his life. His story, told from the pages of his own father's diary, is a chronicle of heartbreak and sorrow over watching this child deteriorate in his development. Noah does not walk until he is 27 months old; his speech, seemingly normal the first year of his life virtually comes to a grinding halt before he stops walking; he engages in bizarre, self-stimulating activities such as lint-chasing, curtain chewing and finger flexing. Josh laments that for every accomplishment Noah makes, another skill is lost. Noah is nonverbal for the most part during the years 1966-1971, the period this book covers.

He is not fully toilet trained, does not engage in activities with others and remains an enigma to his parents, the professionals and his brother Karl who was born 11/64.

The author of this book is also a screenwriter. One of the things that make his "Noah trilogy" so unique is that he was a father who was actively invovled in taking care of the boys as a stay at home parent during a time when that was extremely rare.

5 out of 5 stars A true story of a boy who triumphs over Autism.......2000-03-05

Josh Greenfeld is a parent and a writer who tells us of his expierience in rasing an autistic child through the first five years of his life. In a time when autism was fairly new to medicine He includes personal feelings, difficulties family frustrations, and the resentment of doctors who seem to care nothing of the child, but more for labeling and blaming. This book is a must for people who are dealing with an autistic child or know someone who is.

4 out of 5 stars JOURNEY TOWARDS ACCEPTANCE.......2001-08-21

This third installment of the "Noah Chronicles," as told strictly from his author father's diary entries is a story etched in sorrow. Noah, born 7/1/66 exhibits behavior that can best be described as severely autistic; he functions well below age level and has been labelled brain damaged in addition to autistic.

The first book in the trilogy, "A Child Called Noah" is a chronicle of hope transformed into despair over the lack of progress and rapid deterioration in Noah. This book covers the years 1966-1971 and one shares the anguish of this family who cannot reach this boy. Karl, Noah's older brother (b. 11/64) serves as a "normal foil," for Noah; from the author's own descriptions, Karl stands in stark contrast to his unchanging, noncommunicative, multiply challenged brother.

In the second installment, "A Place For Noah," the author vents his rage at Noah's condition, at the professionals with whom they have come in contact with and at Noah himself. He is irate over Noah's lack of progress and the unsatisfactory programs where Noah was then enrolled. His anger is palpable; one feels the rage he poignantly expresses. He lashes out at Noah; on 6/4/73 he says that by that time the following year, Noah will definitely be placed in an institution because it will be the best thing for him, Josh and that he "has to get rid of him." In his 5/19/76 entry, he angrily raps Noah's knuckles when the boy tries to take his toast; he kicks him from behind when Noah is not looking. His anger flows throughout this book. He stops "chasing doctors" for Noah; he fights valiantly for both sons to have good, appropriate educational programs. His battles have borne some fruit; by 1976 his wife Foumi runs an after school program for developmentally delayed children in their area. This book covers the years 1971 - 1976/7.

In "Client," which opens in January of 1977 and closes in 1980, the author finally says that he is able to accept Noah. Noah is briefly institutionalized. Irate over the poor care Noah is receiving, the Greenfelds withdraw him and their search for a satisfactory program begins anew. By the early 1980s, the Greenfelds purchase a second house where Noah resides with a battery of caretakers. For some years this arrangement appeared to be helpful. Karl runs into his share of problems, including brushes with the law in 1979. He resented the chronicles, telling the author that he cherished his privacy. It is for Karl's sake the book ends in 1980, with a very sketchy update of the intervening years 1980 - 1986.

What makes the "Noah" trilogy so poignant is that it is told entirely from a parent's hard wrought experience; Josh Greenfeld was actively involved in all phases of parenting Karl and Noah during a time when very few men did, e.g. custodial/infant care.

Noah, from all accounts did not show significant progress in any social, cognitive or affective sphere; by 1990 he was institutionalized in a state hospital in Orange County. Multiply challenged and unable to communicate in a meaningful way, Noah remains lost in an institutional limbo.

4 out of 5 stars A Natural Conclusion for Noah; His Family Goes On.......1998-05-12

This is the third installment of the true story of Noah Greenfeld, a severely brain-damaged (his family now rejects the term "autistic") and behavior-disordered individual. Told entirely in extracts from Noah's father's diary, the story is honest and compelling. This is the natural conclusion to the saga of the unchanging Noah, discussing his fate and his affect on the world that could not affect him.

I have not read the second volume, A Place for Noah, but I clearly remember reading the first, A Child Called Noah. Child is mostly about Josh's hopes for Noah, the struggle for a cure or a treatment or even an answer. In Client, Josh seems to have found the answer: Noah is as he always will be, and there is no hope of improvement.

Stagnation sounds like a rather dull basis for a book, and if Client was only about Noah, it would indeed be uninteresting. But the focus has shifted over the years, and if the book fails a portrait of a child, it succeeds as the story of a family. Josh is primarily chronicling the struggles of his family - his normal son's teenage years, his marital difficulties, his problems with heart disease. The honesty will resonate with anyone who has ever lived in a family, with a disabled child or without.

Anyone who hopes for a tale of miracle cures and family perfection will be disappointed; there are no miracles in this book, no ideal worlds. But A Client Called Noah offers some unanswerable questions to ponder, and a tale about one family that could apply to any family.
