Casa Florida: Spanish-Style Houses from Winter Park to Coral Gables
ASIN: 0764323075 |
Book Description
Architect Richard S. Requa traveled Spain and the Mediterannean, documenting authentic architecture. Together with The Monolith Portland Cement Co., Requa published his portfolio of images in 1926, helping to fuel architecture's Spanish Revival movement (1915-1940) throughout the Pacific Coast and Florida. His images were "selected and arranged especially for use in developing a logical and appropriate style of architecture for California and the Pacific Southwest," and they had a profound influence as they were widely distributed to design professionals as well as schools and libraries. Besides providing a wealth of inspiration regarding overall architecture, the nearly 200 images also provide intimate detailing of balconies, doors, hardware, and architectural motifs, and serve as a wonderful resource for historians and restoration experts. Because Spanish Revival is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, the timing of this inspirational re-issue will aid, once again, in focusing on the native roots of the widely loved school of architecture.

Do Not Buy This Book If You Want To Learn To Draw.......2006-12-29
The ad for this book is not only deceitful; it is an out and out lie! If you can not draw but want to learn how, buy another book as this one doesn't tell you anything about how to draw. This book might possibly be useful for an individual who already can draw and wants to become better but it gives no instruction to a beginner. The back of the book states "will teach the absolute beginner how to draw" BUT THAT IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH! The ad is a complete come-on, they are defrauding the public.

Extremely clear and well written guide to the zone system........2002-01-20
There are a number of guides to the zone system and many have something to offer. The Zone System Craftbook (paperback) by J.C. Woods is one of the best. Much of the book is relatively elementary in the sense that people who know the zone system will find it light (but still worthwhile) reading - e.g. zones, zone relationships, placing gray tones, moving them, expansion, contraction, contrast, etc., etc.. The discussion of expansion and contraction is particularly picturesque and transparent. People who are learning the system will find very few books that are clearer. Wood's book has a modest number of illustrations, but they are entirely adequate to support the presentation. What this book does very well is cover the subject in extremely practical terms that can be immediately put into practice. Much of the presentation is not technical and it is unencumbered by elaborate details of testing or sensitometry. But, for those who wish to refine their technique, later chapters are devoted to a detailed approach to testing and calibration, with and without the use of a densitometer. The books will be very useful to people who are refining their use of the zone system as well as to folks who elect not to delve into a high level of perfection with technique. All in all, if you are interested in learning about the zone system, this is a book you will be very glad you decided to buy. There are others, of course. The Ansel Adams Guides (books 1 and 2) by John Schaefer are also well-written and really loaded with illustrations and useful information. They are much bigger than the book by Woods. Out of print now but also excellent is Schaefer's earlier (paperback) book, How to Use the Zone System for Black and White Photography.
The best book on zone system........1999-10-13
It's the best zone system book that has been written so far. It is interesting and very easy to read. It doesn't get bogged down in useless information that fills up so many other books. It's concise and accurate. If you're serious about photography in the least, it's a required reading. It's a must for anybody who cares about his/her photography, unless you're Ansel Adams.

A compilation of a little-known but very influential humoris.......1999-07-06
For twenty-five years, Kin Hubbard wrote a nationally syndicated daily one-panel cartoon with two epigrams. His work was admired by such luminaries as Groucho Marx, S.J. Perelman, James Whitcomb Riley, Franklin P. Adams, and others. His epigrams were good enough to merit five entries in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. David S. Hawes has cherry-picked his best cartoons, epigrams, and short pieces into a hilarious volume that will leave you combing used book stores for copies of Abe Martin's annual books. What strikes me most about Hubbard's humor is not just the wipe-your-eyes laughter, but how little people have changed since he wrote these sentences.

Book Description
Carroll and Wilson have taken their successful Acts of Teaching into the 21st Century with this totally revised second edition. While maintaining the best of Acts I, Acts II moves the paradigm into the global age. Comprehensive, innovative, and practical, and with forewords by two of the most noted scholars in the field, Janet Emig and Edmund J. Farrell, this text offers educators a powerful approach to teaching writing. Rather than repetitive exercises, it focuses on engagement and interaction so students grapple with words and experiences to make meaning. In Acts II the writing process and assessment gain a new dimension. Recent research supports its content and strategies while cognitive development and neurological theories, early literacy, inquiry, and writing as a mode of learning across all disciplines and grade levels have been invigorated. Topics include students, shifts, and skills for the global age, the writing process and assessment, three chapters on how to teach grammar within the writing process, collaboration, post writing, and publishing. This book meets the needs of anyone writing or teaching writing. Grades Pre-K - 12.

A must-have for the teacher of English.......2002-08-12
I have had the opportunity to meet each author in their New Jersey Writing Project in Texas Institute, and I must say this book is an absolute in the instruction of writing. Instead of forcing unreal formulaic writing upon our students, Carroll and Wilson are staunch advocates of voice in writing. If you are looking for a formula or gimmick to teach your students writing, this is NOT the book for you. Instead, Carroll and Wilson use tried and true techniques focusing on the reading-writing connection, pre-writing, and revision that work for students of all grade levels. As a new teacher, this book in conjunction with their Institute has been the most useful tool I have encountered.
Addresses all aspects of successful teaching pragmatically.......1999-09-12
Authors Carroll and Wilson focus on students AND teachers as writers. This text is critical to those who teach writing. It includes specific activities and strategies
for prewriting, conferencing, revision, publishing. Included are many helpful journal articles. It is the most successful tool I've used in over 20 years of teaching students of all grade and ability levels. It is a MUST HAVE. In an empty classroom beseiged by flames, this is THE text I'd grab !

The Edmund Wilson Reader.......2005-09-04
Professor Dabney who edits the Reader writes interesting and informative introductions. His overview is also comprehensive and incisive. In fact, his style is similar to Edmund Wilson's. Reading the selections from Wilson is just a sheer joy. If we only had more essayists, critics and observers like Edmund and his generation, we would be a lot better off in so many ways as a society and a culture.

Customer Reviews:
Barefoot White Masai Boy's story.......2004-03-20
This is the autobiography of an English boy brought up by his farming family in Tanganyika (Tanzania), living in the middle of what is now the Serengeti National Park. The time of the story was the 1920s and 1930s, hard times in a very hard country, long before the arrival of any infrastructure to speak of; roughly contemporaneous with Karen Blixen of "Out of Africa" fame. David Read was mostly left to his own devices as a youngster and his best friend was a Masai boy. Together, they hunted and otherwise lived in the wilds of the East African savannah and lived together among the Masai.
In those days the Masai lived very much as they had done for the two hundred years or so since they arrived on the Serengeti, migrating down the Rift Valley from Ethiopia, conquering all the tribes they encountered along the way. This book is really a recounting of the traditional Masai way of life, much changed in these days when the Masai have been driven from the Serengeti to live exclusively in the Ngorongoro Crater, a lifestyle increasingly eroded by the inevitable encroachment of modernity.
Both the recounting and the way of life are intriguing. The Masai, for a fierce warrior people, were remarkably hospitable both to the young white boy and to all of his kin. And yet the Masai retained their warlike ways and their other habits, including sexual abandon and the single-handed killing of lions with spears by the young warriors - the Moran - all recounted faithfully by Read as seen though his young eyes. The book provides a very interesting insight into a very unusual people.

ASIN: 075243733X |
Book Description
In 1066 the English were conquered by the infamous invader, William the Conqueror. However, this is not the whole story. The English did not roll over and die before their suppressors—far from it. Peter Rex brings to life the resistance, from those who allied themselves with the new regime to those who went “underground” to subvert it such as Hereward the Wake and Edric the Wild. Rex examines William’s pacification attempts, alongside his notorious “harrying” of the north.
Customer Reviews:
A STUDY WORTHY OF MORE THAN 5-STARS!.......2007-09-27
Having interest in this period since college days and having books on the shelf of this period, I was pleasantly surprised at last to find a book that told of the period after the 1066 conquest. Most generally whether in college courses or history books dealing this this era, everything halts at the conquest. Everything was fine, peaceful, everyone working together, right? Well as the author relates, nothing could be farther from the tragic truth.
However, as this author and his engrossing book tell much happened in this hardly ever written about "underground war against the Normans". The book is well written, easy to comprehend, and shows the resistance the English continued to offer after the 1066 battle. William did not begin to build the Tower of London because all things were peaceful, no, and in many, many other places as well small castles were needed to keep William's men from being themselves wiped out. All important offices were taken from the English and given to the Norman vassals, a complete changing of the guard.
Though some would view William as offering 'pacification attempts' the truth more nearly approaches a campaign of totally doing away with the native population. William seems to have had little use, trust, or respect for any native English person. The sooner they were gone the better.
This is some story and one wonders just why no one else through the years has bothered to tell it. History at its best.
Semper Fi.
*not* La Résistance!.......2004-04-19
To paraphrase H.G Wells rather melodramatically, no one would believe in the first years of the 21st century that this nation was once watched keenly and covetously by formidable personalities from across the channel; that as Englishmen busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied...
The aftermath to the Battle of Hastings was violent and ruthless. William of Normandy's achievements can be seen as a formidable combination of both clear-minded political magination and merciless, hard-nosed execution. However, after William's victory in 1066, the English were not a people who could simply roll over and allow the invaders free access to the island's bounty. A tough and equally brutal resistance was fought against Norman rule for a further five years.
Peter Rex's brilliantly researched book overturns today's meekly accepted stance that the Normans invaded and that was that. Walt, in Julian Rathbone's "The Last English King", refuses to call William 'the Conqueror' (preferring, as you might expect, an earthier soubriquet referencing William's illegitimacy) and the impression you get from "The English Resistance" is similarly one of a population rejecting the concept that they are under enemy control.
Every campaign fought during the years 1067 to 1071 is detailed, with Rex analysing the resistance's character, its motives and its triumphs and disappointments. Here, we are focussed on a time when England was divided into occupied and unoccupied zones, collaborative areas and no-go districts, resistance movements spreading through remote areas of the country.
The book examines William's responses, his initial attempts at pacification, and then the notorious harrying of the north (a rather impotent euphemism that, I've always thought, for which we might readily substitute 'genocide' or 'ethnic cleansing' if these battles and skirmishes were being played out on our news screens today). This is an eloquent portrayal of a chaotic period, which demonstrates that the English were not conquered as easily as was once thought. Perhaps the comparison with "The War of the Worlds" isn't quite so inappropriate after all.

Book Description
This book is the second volume of lecture notes on various topics in nonlinear physics delivered by specialists in the field who gave courses in the small village of Peyresq (France) during summer schools (2000, 2001, 2002) organised by the Institut Non Linéaire de Nice (INLN), in collaboration with the Institut de Recherche de Physique Hors Equilibre (IRPHE). The goal is to provide good summaries on the state of the art of some domains in physics having the common denominator of belonging to nonlinear sciences, and to promote the transfer of knowledge between them.
