Book Description

In Architectures of Time, Sanford Kwinter offers a critical guide to the modern history of time and to the interplay between the physical sciences and the arts. Tracing the transformation of twentieth-century epistemology to the rise of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, Kwinter explains how the demise of the concept of absolute time, and of the classical notion of space as a fixed background against which things occur, led to field theory and a physics of the "event." He suggests that the closed, controlled, and mechanical world of physics gave way to the approximate, active, and qualitative world of biology as a model of both scientific and metaphysical explanation.

Kwinter examines theory of time and space in Einstein's theories of relativity and shows how these ideas were reflected in the writings of the sculptor Umberto Boccioni, the town planning schema of the Futurist architect Antonio Sant'Elia, the philosophy of Henri Bergson, and the writings of Franz Kafka. He argues that the writings of Boccioni and the visionary architecture of Sant'Elia represent the earliest and most profound deployments of the concepts of field and event. In discussing Kafka's work, he moves away from the thermodynamic model in favor of the closely related one of Bergsonian duree, or virtuality. He argues that Kafka's work manifests a coherent cosmology that can be understood only in relation to the constant temporal flux that underlies it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding.......2006-01-31

Kwinter's analysis is extraordinary. His method is fairly eclectic, however, as some would issue this as a detraction, he compensates by having a wonderful writing style and a copious amount of mastery of the concepts that he addresses. I have read several treatises on architecture from 'philosophers'(i.e., Foucault, the Sitiuationists, et al.), but what is novel here is a designer explaining the epistemological frame of reference in the edifice, or engendering from it. Furthermore, it is completely amazing to think of the ostensibly disparate entities of Futurist architecture, quantum mechanics and relativity and Kafka as all burgeoning within the same epochal stuctures. I did find it odd that the author did not address Lefevbre's space/time tomes and rhythmanalysis. Kwinter is worth reading, and I think this book will be written about for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars a historical chronicle of beauteous female bottoms.......2002-11-30

There are no known spanking daguerreotypes. The earliest spanking photograph shown here is from 1853 and portrays a little girl being punished by her mother. Nazarieff opines that this domestic discipline was a much more morally acceptable photographic subject at the time than spanking as love play between two consenting adults would have been. La Belle Epoque (circa 1900-1920) saw the English vice pass from the European aristocracy to the bourgeoisie, who frequented spanking brothels where they could book a session with a professional submissive. These establishments advertised with visiting cards depicting a stern, fully-clothed madam flogging one of the girls.

The Roaring Twenties brought a spate of naughty post cards and even stereoscopic images of corporal punishment. The male consumers of these items preferred an all-female cast for the same reasons that faux lesbian scenes are such fantasy favorites for heterosexual men today. There are potentially more female parts on display, there's no competition in sight, and the women are simply warming each other up for the magical moment when the viewer steps into the picture. The attraction of het women to M/m scenes can be explained similarly. Historically, of course, the images were predominantly of females because the men controlled the money. The thirties featured the leather and rubber fetish photography of Parisian Yva Richard (not included in this volume). The horrors of WWII then temporarily curtailed the European appetite for the algolagniac image. But it surged in US popularity, as evidenced by the tremendous inventory of bondage and spanking pix merchandised by Irving Klaw, whose work is well-represented here. Klaw's favorite model was Betty Page who must have spent many, many hours getting tied up and unbound. Only a couple of pix of Betty here; however, there are plenty of books dedicated to her alone.

I highly recommend this volume. Jeux de Dames Cruelles features a multitude of beauteous female bottoms, often framed by fetching period undergarments, submitting to punishment. The spankees are mostly clothed except for their netherglobes, but there are a few nudes. It's fascinating to view the variety of female body types historically deemed appealing as opposed to the very narrow contemporary fashion, TV and movie industry standards. These women were allowed to eat, which reminds us of one of the great virtues of today's BDSM scene: its democracy of physique. The pictures' settings include the schoolroom, the boudoir, the land of dreams and the great outdoors. And there's a little dog and pony play.

            Book Description

An acclaimed biography of one of the greatest, grittiest reporters of our time.

With the incisive pen of a newspaperman and the compassionate soul of a poet, Mike Royko was a Chicago institution who became, in Jimmy Breslin's words, "the best journalist of his time." Royko was by all accounts a difficult man, who would chew out his assistants every morning and retire to the Billy Goat Tavern every night. But his writing was magic. No one captured Chicago like Mike Royko. No one wrote with his honesty, his toughness, his passion, and his humor.

In this, the first comprehensive biography of one of the most important Chicagoans of the century, Dick Ciccone, a long-time colleague and editor of Royko's at the Chicago Tribune, captures Royko at his best and at his worst. We see Royko on his tenth drink of the afternoon. We see him sweating over columns minutes before deadline. We see him romancing his wife and torturing his legmen. We see him barbequeing ribs and riffing on politicians. Mike Royko was a man of the people. With his keen sense of justice and his murderous pen, he became the most widely read columnist in Chicago history. His column was syndicated in more than 600 newspapers across the country. With 7500 columns spanning four decades, Royko's writing reflects a radically changing America. Royko not only tells the story of one of America's greatest newspapermen, but also explores the dramatic changes in journalism over the course of the twentieth century.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars Royko revealed.......2005-07-03

I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand Royko, Chicago politics, Chicago journalism, or just wants a good biography to read. Ciccone does an excellent job not merely describing Royko's roots, but showing how that affected the person he became.

Despite his brilliant writing, incisive political insights, and empathy for the ordinary Joe, Royko was a deeply troubled man. He was a severe alcoholic (as was his father before him), a workaholic who loved his family but was hardly ever around, a famous and successful columnist who was jealous of others and could hold a grudge like you wouldn't believe. When he remarried and started a second family (by adoption) after his first beloved wife's death, he spent more time on family things and tried to stop his self-destructive behavior, with limited success.

Ciccone does not hide Royko's warts (and they were many), although he does become a bit of an apologist about his later, nastier side.

Filled with anecdotes about Chicago's newspaper wars, sports teams (such as they are), its famous, infamous and not-famous-at-all, this will go on the shelf with all my other Chicagoana.

One irritant, though. Ciccone is a newsman. He was managing editor for the Chicago Tribune and teaches journalism. Did he not read the proofs? Did his editor not read the proofs? Aside from such annoyances as the constant use of the word "anabuse" when he means "Antabuse", and calling Mike and his wife "the Royko's", Ciccone occasionally, gets repetitious, telling stories more than once in a way that makes it clear that he thinks he's saying it for the first time.

But that's a minor quibble about an otherwise fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Warts and All view of Royko.......2004-06-13

This is a very long but well researched and well rounded biography of Royko. It shows his good and bad sides in an evenhanded fashion.
I've been a longtime Royko admirer and reader. He is the inspiration for the column that I write for the Richmond Daily Register. Having said that, I think this is one of best biographies ever written about Royko.
            A complete and through study.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read.......2003-12-29

Although it's long, I flew through this book while on a trip to the caribbean. I've always been a fan of Mike Royko and simply had to buy it.

Don't be turned off by the size, it is a quick read, without skimping on detail. Mike Royko's career ran for decades so there was a lot to cover. Although it touches on his early life, this book deals primarily with his writing career. Lots of coverage is given to his dislike of the Late Mayor Daley, love of softball, as well as a few embarrassing drunken escapades. All in all, it gives you a complete picture of Mr. Royko, warts and all. I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted to Know and More.......2003-07-06

I haven't read any of the other reviews for opinions, but author Richard Ciccone covers the life of Chicago icon Mike Royko in a lengthy 439 pages from his years of writing for the Chicago Daily News, the Chicago Sun Times, and the Chicago Tribune. Unlike columnists of other newspapers who wrote one or two columns a week, Mike Royko wrote five columns a week before finally cutting down to four per week near the end of his career. Mike struggled with the demons of alcohol and tobacco during his life which caused him to have health problems that may have led to the brain aneurysms that took his life in 1997, the year he was to retire. This book may tell you more than you want to know about Mike Royko, but I never found the book to be boring. He could be loving and kind, but he also could be crude and profane. Nevertheless, he could write a column that could be biting with sarcasm as well as humor. I have read both of his books on favorite columns he wrote and found them both informative and entertaining. This book by Royko friend Richard Ciccone also qualifies as informative and entertaining. Read and enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2002-04-15

You should read this book until a better one comes along.

Very few writers have ever personified their time and place like Mike Royko did Chicago. I guess the best thing about this book is that it reminds us of what we are missing. It also gave me a bit of detail in the life of a man that I had only known through his columns.

Like most of us, Mike had some serious shortcomings (what appears to have been a serious alcohol problem stands out as number one). He also had a heart and drive for perfection that made his column so great, and (probably) his private life so sad. The `daily demon,' and the inability to settle for less made him the best columnist of his generation.

This book was obviously written by an admirer. Perhaps someday there will be a more objective biography. For today if you want to understand Chicago in the last half of the twentieth century this book and a collection of Mike Royko's columns is a good place to start.

              Book Description

In 1971, fed up with the politics and culture of America, Terry Tarnoff packed a bag, a guitar, and sixteen harmonicas and headed out on an eight year journey that would take him into the jungles of Africa, the mountains of India, and beyond. Smoking a chillum around a funeral pyre with lepers, battling fist size cockroaches in Africa or driving through the poppy fields of Thailand with a kamikaze cab driver, each adventure leads Terry further into worlds unlike those he has ever known. And through the people he meets-from a heroine addict to the girl of his dreams-Terry begins to find the true purpose of his travels. The Bone Man of Benares traverses the chasm of time, speaking to readers young and old about the universal need for connection.

3 out of 5 stars Funny in places.......2006-12-08

The Bone Man of Benares is pretty much one man's obsession with a specific woman and drugs in the 1970's. This book should be subtitled taking drugs in exotic places. While he can be extremely funny at times, most of the book reads like an over-obsessed childhood crush on drugs. It isn't until the author gets to Africa that you get any indication of the society around him (other than the drug taking that is). All the way to the end of the book you get endless lessons on Bangi, hash-smoking and acid-taking. While I understand this was a major part of the era it seems to be mentioned a little too often and makes you wonder just exactly how much of the other stuff he describes really happened or if it was all just a bad acid trip.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing and unusual traveller's tale.......2006-07-20

This is an amusing account of Tern Tarnoff's travels around the world in the early 1970s. Interwoven with his travels is the tale of his compicated on-off love affair with Annika, the charming girl he meets in Sweden, and remains enamoured of throughout his subsequent travels. When he isn't indulging in somewhat tiresome stream-of-consciousness ramblings, he describes his adventures in an entertaining way, and the book is often very funny. His time in African is particularly vividly described, and his eventual and startline encounter with the Bone Man of Benares is one of th ehighlights of the book, even though our curiosity as to what the bone man does with his bones remains unsatisfied. Very amusing.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for a sad lad..........2005-05-12

I spent a while reading this book and I have to say that I felt so many different emotions that I found it hard to put the book down. True love, the ripped heart, the soulmate, the music, the scares, the feeling of being part of something special... It's a book that you should pick up as soon as possible and hopefully a moment of your life will be filled with a rollercoaster of emotions!!

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!.......2004-08-20

This book was an adventure all the way through. Every time that I picked it up, I found myself captured for hours as I devoured this fascinating book. Tarnoff does a magnificent job of transporting the reader with him to experience wondrous adventures in Europe, Africa, and Asia. I loved his picturesque descriptions as well as the poetic style of writing that emerges when he is describing certain experiences. Read this book and be prepared for a journey that will often make you laugh, sometimes make you cry, but in the end will leave you feeling good and triumphant.

              5 out of 5 stars Post-modern Siddhartha.......2004-05-29

I loved this book! It's a fantastic, beautifully-written hilarious poetic journey of one man whose search for manhood, spirituality and love takes him to the far corners of the world most of us only wish we could visit. Tarnoff writes with such color and verve that I felt transported to the cobblestone streets of Sweden, to the plains of Africa, to the perfect insanity of India, to the pristine altitudes of Nepal. Un-put-down-able, compelling, vivid, magical, funny, human. What more can I say? Read it!

                    Book Description

Custer and the Great Controversy was the first book to focus on the origins of what has come to be called the Custer myth. The Battle of the Little Bighorn has always been wrapped in mystery and controversy because none of Custer’s men survived to tell what happened, because press accounts circulated much misinformation and editors politicized the event, because popular writers repeated the errors of journalists, because a court of inquiry issued in bitter debate, and because Indian testimony was hard to gauge. This book, originally published in 1962, helps the reader understand the sources of the confusion and controversy surrounding the Custer fight and the beginning of the legend.

Custer and the Great Controversy was Robert M. Utley’s debut, coming after six years of service as a ranger-historian at the Little Bighorn National Monument. His distinguished career as a historian has produced many books, including Frontiersmen in Blue: The United States Army and the Indian, 1848–1865 and Frontier Regulars: The United States Army and the Indian, 1866–1891, both available as Bison Books.

5 out of 5 stars The place to start for the Custer-Little Big Horn student.......2007-09-05

Despite its age (it was first published in 1962) this book is probably the best of the scores of books available to start with for those interested in exploring the ever elusive and controversial life of George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Utley, while steering clear of making judgments of his own ("I do not aspire to offer the last word on the subject"), lays out the scene of the battle, shows how the press and early writers colored events and created heroes and villains, looks at the Indian side of the story, and discusses some of the myths that have gone into creating the Custer Legend. The Custer literature is prodigious in amount, and tends to be either Custerphilic (pro-Custer) or Custerphobic (anti-Custer). Again, Utley refuses to take sides, but points out that virtually every "fact" regarding the battle and its participants issues up opposing interpretations. This short book gives a powerful sense of what the student of Custer and especially the Little Big Horn is up against. A useful and straightforward introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading For Custer Battle Students.......2004-07-09

Anything by Robert Utley is indispensible, especially when it comes to Custer as he wrote CAVALIER IN BUCKSKIN, probably the best biography of the man. Also to his credit are the official NPS Little Bighorn Battlefield guide, a biography of Sitting Bull, and numerous other Custer/Indian Wars/Western history books.

This book is primarily focussed on an examination of the immediate aftermath of the Little Big Horn and how the various lines of controversy were established that still echo (unresolved) and are with us today. These include Did Custer Disobey Orders? Was Reno a coward when he fled from the valley fight? Were both Reno and Benteen negligent in not responding to Custer's written order for the packs, an order with an audible reminder of the gunfire four miles away that, two days later, the men on Reno Hill learned signalled the end of Custer and his command. All of the seeds of future books and endless debates were firmly planted by the end of the 1870s, topped off with the Reno Court of Inquiry. Excellent insight into that event and some of the second-hand talk and gossip sorroundingsthe officers who testified and why they may have said what they did. Utley is his usual dispassionate, detached self as he explores these issues in his highly engaging writing style.

Originally published in 1962, the book concludes with Utley's brief commentary on most of the major battle books published up to that time. One can only wish that this section were revised and updated. Lacking that, we can all look forward to the autor's CUSTER AND ME, due in October 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Series of Essays on Why Custer Became a Legend.......2001-07-16

Early book by the great western writer Robert Utley provides a brief description of the Indian situation that evolved before the LBH and then he provides an abbreviated but well described sequence of battle events. Utley then describes the press' role in developing the story that caught General Sherman and Sheridan off guard as Sherman provides Terry's second controversial report to a reporter by accident. Utley describes the fireworks that arises between Custer supporters such as his old classmate Confederate Rosser and Reno and other military men such as Colonel Hughes, Terry's adjutant and relative. The controversy is even made even more complex by the chapter spent on the Indian's version of events that has elements of truth combined with confusing facts or half truths perhaps aggravated by poor translations and the Indians unique individualistic versions of battle that lack time and spatial realities. Finally, Utley tackles a number of the mythical stories about Custer and the LBH including Frederick Whitacker's quick print and fanciful book on Custer that became a best seller. The best part of this chapter is the discussion about the last four crow scouts to see Custer particularly the debate over when Curley departed from Custer. An excellent book that frames the controversies about Custer's battle which also explains the fascination, nothing is totally certian but amongst all the testimony and physical evidence, somewhere lies the truth.

Good reading offers some good insight into the whole Custer and Little Bighorn 'fiasco'! I'm more prepared now to find out what possibly happened on that fateful day. The case has been well made that there may 'never' be a definitive conclusion?

This little text is a good accompaniment to the main book, "Making of the West". Here, Lualdi takes the student in a tour of excerpts from original source documents. Translated where necessary from other languages.

So you can see a lengthy essay written on the eve of the French Revolution. Asking, "What is the Third Estate?" This Estate was the impotent assembly that represented the French people, as contrasted to the other Estates that drew from the aristocracy. The essay neatly encapsulates the rising demands of the majority of the people; suggesting why the Revolution occurred.

The book has many other examples. All fitting to give depth to your appreciation of modern history.

A collection of state-of-the-art methods for epigenetic analysis, including recent breakthrough techniques that have great potential in the rapidly expanding field of non-Mendelian genetics. The authors provide techniques for the analysis of chromatin remodeling, such as histone acetylation and methylation. In addition, methods in newly developed and especially promising areas of epigenetics, such as telomere position effects, quantitative epigenetics, and ADP ribosylation are covered. There is also an updated analysis of techniques involving DNA methylation and its role in the modification, as well as the maintenance, of chromatin structure. Of special interest are potentially revolutionary techniques. These include methods for determining changes in native chromatin, methods of microarray analysis applied to epigenetics, and methylation-sensitive single-strand conformation techniques. The methods are suitable not only for studying fundamental biological processes, but also for investigating possible therapeutic interventions and such diseases as cancer.

                            Book Description

The state-of-the-art methods collected here are designed to analyze the relationship between chromatin structure and function, and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that control such vital cellular functions as transcription, replication, recombination, and DNA repair. These proven methods cover a wide range of topics, from powerful cell-free systems for the reconstitution of chromatin heterogeneity in vitro, to both classical and cutting-edge techniques for in vivo analysis of protein-DNA interactions. Each method includes detailed step-by-step instructions to ensure successful replication along with helpful notes about how to avoid pitfalls. All authors are leading scientists, well known for their methodological expertise in the chromatin research.
