Book Description
Discover how to recreate and restore authentic period architecture, furnishings and detailing in the Art Deco style.
The elegant and sophisticated style known as Art Deco epitomises for many the inter-war years of the 1920s and 1930s. Although not strictly a style of architecture, but a surface decoration, its clean lines and stylized, symmetrical forms nonetheless influenced the design of buildings throughout the world, greatly assisted by the new industrial materials of stainless steel and ferro-concrete. Interiors followed suit, featuring chrome for the first time, as well as brightly coloured enamels, glass and polished stone. Furniture, too, adopted the streamlined look, to which the mass-produced tubular steel of the 1930s was ideally suited.
Art Deco transcended class as no other style had done previously. It united architecture (both public and domestic), decorative arts and the cheapest consumer goods. Today, as a result of the building boom of the 1920s and 1930s, more people probably live in a house built in this period than in any other.
Although Art Deco House Style is primarily for those who wish to restore their homes to their original style, it is also a comprehensive reference book for devotees wishing to expand their knowledge of the movement. Lavishly illustrated chapters cover every aspect of the home, including furniture, fabrics and decorative detail, and throughout there is discussion of the leading designers of the period. Filled with practical advice and sources of materials, as well as much additional related information, this masterful work is an invaluable guide to the maintenance and renovation of Art Deco homes.

Mostly exterior.......2007-03-09
This is a lovely book, but I bought it for the interior part and it really is mostly external architecture.
More a historical reference book than a decorating book.......2007-02-18
I ordered this book for a friend who has an Art Deco house and is planning an extension with a new kitchen. It sounded ideal but proved less than useful. It is really a historical reference for Art Deco elements which may be interesting to some but is not so useful if you want to use your house in a more modern way. The average 1930's kitchen just does not cut it these days. This book showed original Art Deco kitchens but no new kitchens in Art Deco style. I would recommend this book to design students and ardent enthusiasts of the style but not to someone who is not so fanatical. There are better books for integrating old and new such as "Old House, New Home: Stylish Modern Living In A Period Setting".
LOVE IT.......2006-07-03
This book is exactly what I was looking for! The reviews I read on amazon.com convinced me to buy it because they said it was great for someone who owned an art deco style house and they were right. I would recommend it.
Middle Class Art Deco.......2006-03-16
Many of the Art Deco reference books are very high quality "coffee table" productions that highlite museum quality Art Deco creations. They are fantastic books but as the owner of middle class Art Deco home, I know that objects presented in these books are way beyond my economic means. I can admire them but never afford these iconic art pieces. The beauty of Ingrid Cranfield's "Art Deco House Style" is that it concentrates on more modest homes and interiors. Nearly every page is filled with period photographs of house exteriors, furniture and other household objects. At $16 new or $10 used, this is a very reasonably priced reference book more suitable for the book shelf than the coffee table. A good value and highly recommended for the regular person with a 1930's home.
Very Nice.......2005-07-18
I really like this book a lot of pictures, it is helping my to decorate my thirties house. I surely recomend it.

A Great Book.......2006-05-27
I've checked this book out from the library at least five times. It always helps to inspire me and either remind me of old ideas or give me fresh ones. This book doesn't actually teach you how to draw. For that, I'd suggest "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way." This book teaches you how to develop plot ideas, create your own studio, do drawing exercises, create characters, etc... It has interviews with famous comic artists and kid artists. It has drawing book suggestions and ways to promote your work. It's a really helpful book that I would definately recommend.
WOOOO.......2003-10-28
I recommend the book simply because I'm one of the "young artists" featured (names David Barnes). They even let me do a booksigning...a really great experience!
This Is A Good Book!!.......2002-12-14
This is a fun book to read. In addition to being well written and informative, this book opened up to me the wonderful world of comics/graphic novels (MAGIC KNIGHTS RAYEARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)I think it is a really good book for if you want to start on drawing comics but you just don't know if you have the patience to fit all those little drawings into little boxes. That's kinda how I felt at first but now I love drawing comics.
Written in a kid-friendly, chatty tone.......2002-03-21
Comic book fans of all ages who want to create some memorable works of their own receive basic tips on everything from starting a cartoon studio and choosing characters and plots to honing drawing skills and submitting work to comics companies. A kid-friendly, chatty tone makes it easy for younger artists to become involved.
VERY GOOD BOOK!!!.......2002-02-07
This book is very helpful. I can now draw comics very well!!!

Vavra's CATS--at long last!.......2005-02-10
I saw this book in the USU bookstore in the 70's, and it was exquisite! But we were poor (the usual starving students) and I wasn't able to get it. But I have thought about this book ever since. I've even tried to search in the internet for it. Finally, I tried Amazon.com, and voila! there it was. I can hardly wait to get it in my hot little hands. There were so many memorable inages-this is not a commonplace book of cat pictures, oh no! Try it-if you are at all a cat lover, you'll absolutely LOVE this!
Vavra's Cats Outshines Them All!.......2001-06-25
What a delightful book! If you're a cat lover, you must get your paws on a copy of this lovely masterpiece. It presents the cat in all her mysterious facets...from jungle king to high society maven. You will find big cats and small, all decked out in jewels and surrounded by exotic locales and people. You'll never quite see your cat in the same way again! I can't imagine why the publisher is no longer printing this wonderful, wonderful work of art.
Stunning Visual Imagery.......1999-03-30
I saw this book in a University Bookstore in the late '80's-it was incredible. This is nothing like your usual book of cat photography. Some of the pictures I remember: A cheetah photographed in an exquisite, ancient egyptian setting; A splendid African chieftain kneeling next to a majestic male lion; a puma with turquoises wound around it's neck; a mysterious lady and her cat photographed behind a lace curtain; and many more. The book is ravishing! If I'd had any sense, I'd have bought the book even though I was a 'starving student!!' What a shame it's out of print!

Book Description
An uncensored road trip through gay American life in the early sixties!
Jack Nichols is now known as a founding father of the gay and lesbian liberation movement, editor of GAY (the first gay weekly newspaper), co-founder of the Mattachine Societies of Washington, DC, and Florida, and a warrior who broke ground for gay equality. In his early twenties, however, he was dedicated to romance, ardor, and wanderlust-living the life of a gypsy and making love with abandon.
Customer Reviews:
A great adventure in learning about life........2004-11-22
This is really not so much an "erotic adventures" book as it is a charming story about the romantic adventures of an idealistic young activist exploring gay life in America in the 1960s.
Indeed, after finishing the first chapter in which Nichols describes his first erotic encounter with a new friend he's met on a Florida beach, I jokingly told friends this book looked like it would simply be pure "erotic homosexual propoganda". I'd never read such romantic hyperbolic descriptions of homosexual sex. Indeed, I suspected I had missed out on something all these years. I was almost jealous. If I had been heterosexual, I'd probably felt I'd really missed life's greatest experience: "homosexual sex"!
However, beginning with the second chapter, everything became "real" as Nichols commences a long quest trying to find his lost love.
In the process, he discovers that some people you encounter in life are not what they pretend to be. He hitches rides all over the country, finds hustling is one reliable means of survival, befriends his missing love's lesbian sister to bolster his position in a future reunion and explores gay and straight culture in small towns and large cities. Being tall, masculine and handsome made everything easier and more interesting.
Nichols has a great ability to make those strange characters he encounters come vividly to life. If you took the best of John Rechy and Jack Keroac and blended them together, you'd end up with a book like this.
The title seems to promise either masturbatory material or a dated 1960s sex memoir. This book is much more. It is a timeless story about life and romance, an exploration of the interaction between sex and love.
Truth is hotter than fiction........2004-08-19
Nichols's erotic memoir is his personal, sexual history of the years between 1961 and 1964, when gay life in America was alleged to have been one big closet. In fact, young, good-looking men like Nichols had the time of their lives, if they were discreet. AIDS was unheard of; and it was easier to seduce good-looking "straight" men in that simpler time. From 42nd Street in New York to 21st Street in Miami Beach, Nichols covered the waterfront.
As erotica, "The Tomcat Chronicles" is as stimulating and more literary than most of today's sex fiction. It is also required reading for all who are interested in gay American history and in the life of one of the gay community's most important activists and authors.

An excellent resource for parents.......1998-11-14
Parents need to be aware of the drug filled world we live in, this book is a real eye opener for parents and should be a MUST READ for anyone with children over the age of 10. It can help parents face reality and get help for their children and themselves. The section on RED FLAG BEHAVIOR is especially useful. I am the parent of a substance abuser and I wish I had the information in this book when he was 12.... I highly reccommend this book.

Selections from four legends in maritime and air strategy: Mahan, Corbett, Douhet and Mitchell
Introduction by noted military strategist and author David Jablonsky
David Jablonsky has compiled the best writings of four of the most influential theorists of naval and air power in the past century. Alfred Thayer Mahans Influence of Sea Power Upon History, Julian Corbetts Some Principles of Maritime Strategy, Guilio Douhets Command of the Air, and William Billy Mitchells Winged Defense continue to have relevance for students and practitioners of naval and air strategy. They illustrate the continuity of strategic thought, even through current times of great and widespread change. Col. (Ret.) David Jablonsky, Ph.D. is the Professor of National Security Affairs in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Book 4 continues Stackpoles popular Roots of Strategy series. Information for Books 1, 2, and 3 is found in our 1999 Annual Backlist catalog.

Great Stuff.......2007-03-26
This Book earns my respect as well. There is so much knowledge that I can learn from (although sometimes the writing style can be rather dry and lacks some form of "action" to excite me). I will be getting hold of the other volumes as well.
Steven Lim (RSTN)
Primary source that's shockingly up-to-date.......2007-01-23
This is another in the excellent set of collected works on strategy and tactics by the founding theorists and strategists of history. I think Vol. 4 is richer in scope than the other works that stretch back in history. These authors delve into the changes that technology wrought on the military operations and political-military strategy of the previous two centuries. Their very different approaches to the evolution of air and sea strategy illustrate just how amazingly forward thinking they were in trying to anticipate what would happen next. Remember, Mahan and Corbett were looking forward to whole-Earth naval strategies when oil-fired engines were cutting edge innovations and before the adoption of naval airpower, large-scale wireless communication, etc.. Douhet and Mitchell also made astounding predictions that still resonate today about the implication of holding truly higher ground. This book, like the others in the series, are excellent sources for anyone interested in innovation, strategy, clarity and critical thinking.

The Influence of Air Power upon History .......2007-07-18
The Influence of Air Power upon History tells the tale of flight from the first balloon travels through to the modern era. As one would expect, much of this history is more accurately termed military history as the evolutionary process and specific modifications to the various crafts were often driven by military need.
This book contains good detail about flight history while still managing to be an interesting read. Moreover, the chapters are separated into useful time periods or specific changes in technology that will allow this book to also serve as a useful reference for those individuals looking for information on a particular craft, wanting to explore the influence of flight in particular campaigns, or wanting to understand the air power strategies that each country used in these battles.
The Influence of Air Power upon History is a very good all round reference on the history of air power. This book is suitable for those with very little knowledge of flight and is also useful as a reference for those individuals wanting to look deeper into these aspects.
Despite title it's not related to Mahan's approach.......2006-03-20
An easy read. Despite the book's title and its implication that it is related conceptually to Mahan's book on seapower, it is not. It is about the influence of air power in a broader sense -- not necessarily on the battlefield. In addition to war, it is about the influence of air power in the areas of politics, diplomacy, technology, and mass culture because Boyne believes that air power has been not only significant in battle but maybe even more in, "the direction of national policies, the growth of industries, and perhaps most important, the rapid advance of technology, even in times of peace." Unlike seapower, airpower presents an immediate threat to a nation's population, whereas a sea-based blockage takes time to be felt. Boyne believes there has always been a symbiotic relationship between air power and the mass media, and that it is no coincidence that popular perceptions and enthusiasm for air power have been influenced by the simultaneous advance of the mass media.
A surprisingly pleasant read about a complicated subject........2004-08-25
This is a surprisingly easy read about a complicated subject--really the effect of heavier-than-air aircraft upon military history, and to a lesser extent, upon industrial development. Author Boyne is obviously possessed of a vast knowledge about his subject. Sometimes this can be the downfall of a book of this type, where a torrent of facts can overwhelm the overall theme of a work. Not here. Boyne tells the story of the rise and development of air power in a clear, concise, and yet nevertheless surprisingly detailed way. I was frankly expecting something of a hard slog to get through a serious work such as this. I was pleasently surprised, because this is a readable work that keeps the reader interested and the pages turning. Mr. Boyne does not merely relate facts--he tells a story, punctuated with interesting insights, opinions, and conclusions. The reader can decide whether he or she agrees with Mr. Boyne's various conclusions. Personally, I was usually persuaded, if not necessarily always.
Since this is an overall look at the rise of air power, it contained less details on some subjects than I would have liked to see. For example, the book covers the battle between the US 8th Air Force (and its British counterparts) and the German Luftwaffe with just enough detail to leave me wanting more, this being a subject of intense interest to me. Another fascinating observation by Mr. Boyne is his conclusion that the development of air power, and its demand for high-quality industrial specifications, had far-reaching effects upon industrial development. This is undoubtedly true, although I personally had never really thought about it before. More facts illustrating this plausible conclusion would have been welcome. On the other hand, too much more detail on these and many other subjects would of course have increased the scope of this book beyond the appreciation of most readers. This is the inherent shortcoming of a work of this type, and Boyne strikes a reasonable balance.
Overall, the reader is unlikely to find a better written or researched book about this broad subject.
Examines the nature and applications of air power.......2004-01-15
Walter Boyne's The Influence Of Air Power Upon History is an informed and informative history which examines the nature and applications of air power from the early days of the balloon to current space warfare and jets. Air power exercised in both war and peace times survey the contributions made by people and technology of each era, drawing some important links between individual achievement and usage.

Book Description
Leading international authorities report on their in vivo studies of neuron-glia interactions in animals with simple nervous systems (insects, fish, amphibians, and reptiles). Their work amounts to an in-depth account of many of the principal functions of glial cells: myelination, regulation of ionic environment, neurotransmitter compartmentation and neurotransmitter receptors, blood-brain barrier, regeneration, and aging. Part I examines the origin and role of glial cells during development across the phylogenetic spectrum, including the evolution of their particular functions. Part II discusses the physiological and metabolic interactions between neurons and glia, again across phylogenetic groups.
Neuron-Glia Interrelations During Phylogeny illuminates the evolution of the nervous system and expands our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in regeneration and central nervous system repair. It constitutes a virtual encyclopedia of up-to-date findings concerning the significant roles played by glial cells in neuronal development and function.
