5 out of 5 stars Captivating Imagery from the Spirit World.......2000-03-06

I have tried time and again to pick up this book and read the text in sequence, but the full-page color plates of Pablo Amaringo's paintings always pull me away from the text and into the world of shamans, angels, devils, serpents, jungle cats, mermaids, and aliens. I've read a lot of the text, but usually I have done so in search of an explanation for the images in specific paintings.

My first ayahuasca experiences were under the guidance of Luis Eduardo Luna. His knowledge of plant lore, chemistry, shamanism, and human nature is awe-inspiring, and I do want to read his words, but the pull of Pablo Amaringo's images has been too strong for me to resist thus far. I'm glad to have this book on my shelf because whenever someone asks me about ayahuasca, I know that I can place this book in their hands and the images will capture their imagination and make them hungry to learn more.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......1999-08-16

If you wish a clear, objective overview of shamanic worldview, this book is outstanding. The introduction alone (which is all I have read so far) is worth a great deal. Without being dressed up in obscurities, there is much to learn here.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1997-10-17

Along with Schultes' and Raffauf's Vine of the Soul, this is one of the best books on ayahuasca ever written. Luis Eduardo Luna is one of the world's leading authorities on this intriguing subject and Pablo Amaringo is equally knowledgeable. A treasure trove of info and art for anyone interested in art, the Amazon, and shamanism-

Part biography, part document of spiritual wisdom, Forest of Visions is a fascinating story that satisfies on many levels. Author Alex Polari de Alverga spent years as a political prisoner during military rule in Brazil. Here he recounts his spiritual transformation after release under the tutelage of Padrinho Sebastião Mota de Mela, one of the founders of the Santo Daime religion. Forest of Visions is also a study of the inner workings of the Santo Daime utopian community of 500 in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. The Santo Daime is a Christian-indigenous syncretic religion that centers around the drinking of a sacramental psychedelic tea called Ayahuasca as a shortcut to spiritual revelation and growth. After years of study, the Brazilian government decided that Ayahuasca positively benefited society and church members, and declared it legal. Approximately 50 Santo Daime churches now exist around the world, including in the U.S., Japan, and Holland, with various legal statures. The forward by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway, and the preface by Jonathan Goldman provide an informative transition from our world to the realm of this mysterious and unique Amazonian cult. --P. Randall Cohan

Book Description

The story of Santo Daime--a new religion that blends elements of  Christianity with older Amazonian indigenous spiritual practices--and the ecologically sound and spiritually centered utopian community it has inspired

• A true story of a classical spiritual encounter, as well as an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition that continues to grow worldwide

• Edited and Introduced by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway

Alex Polari de Alverga spent years as a political prisoner during the rule of the military junta in Brazil, enduring torture, brutality, and deprivation. On his release from captivity and in search of something to restore his spiritual connection to life, he had a transformative encounter with one of the two revered founders of Santo Daime, Padrinho Sebastiao Mota de Mela. Santo Daime--an Amazonian religion, born out of jungle entheogens, mediumship, and healing, that is a potent and unique synthesis of Christianity and indigenous practices--provided Alverga with an alternative to his disillusionment with modern society. His quest for spiritual initiation eventually led him deep into the heart of the rainforest to Mapia, one of the spiritual centers of Santo Daime, where he became a teacher and leader of the Daime community.

Forest of Visions is a story of a classic spiritual encounter comparable to the Tibetan Saint Milarepa's search for his teacher Marpa. It is also an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition that from modest beginnings in Brazil has now spread throughout the world and continues to grow. It provides an inside look at the spiritually centered village of Mapia, a model for communities in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-05-09

Alex Polari has a very special capacity of writing and bringing to life this beautifull story of such an important person, Padrinho Sebastiao.
This book gives an indepth view of the padrinho's life and of the Santo Daime doctrine.
Very inspiring

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2000-05-04

I really wanted to find out about the Santo Daime movement, and while this book has a lot of information, there is just way too much of the very mental ramblings of the author. While in many books this is a good thing, here it is a real distraction.

5 out of 5 stars The only worthwhile book on Santo Daime in English.......1999-07-19

There is much on the internet about Santo Daime, almost none of which accurately portrays the church or the religious and spiritual significance of the Daime. This book, however, is a deep discussion of the church, the doctrine and the Daime which offers a clear picture from a man who has traveled far on the spiritual path of the Santo Daime. Interested people, please read this book before reading anything else.

    Book Description

Michigan-based painter Rod Lawrence has offered everything an artist needs to learn to paint water birds. This book explains how to compose thumbnail sketches, use reference photos, master anatomical details, capture action in feeding and flying, and place birds in typical environments. Short instructional demonstrations specify surface, paint, and brush materials, and guide the artist step by step through explicit aspects of waterfowl depiction, such as painting a folded wing on a female mallard in watercolor. Although Lawrence stresses the importance of working directly from nature, every page is packed with enough technical material to keep the artist challenged whether indoors or out. The book is geared for painters of all stages and media who want to bring waterfowl to life. Lawrence's graceful compositions and practical advice, such as "If you don't get discouraged and challenged by your art, then maybe you are not stretching yourself to do more," will inspire any artist. --Mary Ribesky

This book is a nice walk-thru book for any beginners or amateurs interested waterfowl art. It will give you some sense of the direction that is needed to follow up on becoming a professional("If that's what your heart desires") The book also teaches you on building reference and stresses the importance of Knowing your subjects. Being a waterfowl artist and studying Rod Lawrence's work, I think it's safe to say "This book will either help you out, or just get you more interested in drawing and painting ducks.......oh and shore birds" Good luck!

Also discussed are marketing issues, from determining a cost-effective pricing strategy to exploring ways to package and promote this service.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Watercolor Portrait Photography.......2001-02-22

The book is valuable for the information it extends towards composition, lighting and subject and the examples are wonderful, however, I really wanted to know more about the manipulation of the SX-70 image itself. Do I push here or rub? When is outlining favorable or why scratch the image? These are all questions I still have.

4 out of 5 stars Draw outside of the lines.......2000-10-27

Spark up the excitement in imaging again, do what your elemetary school teachers told you not to do and start drawing outside the lines for a totally cool and creative look. The finished product is often not what you envisioned at the start of the manipulation, and the journey is as much fun and the finished product. Helen does a great job of using this technique and describing the tools and techniques you may not intuitively discover. Images used for illustration in the book are beautiful, and again Helen includes other photographic artists to help show the way. Definately worth checking out.

Granted, there are plenty of people who love Valentine's Day, who gush over flowery cards and melt at the sight of luscious boxes of chocolates and billowing bouquets of flowers from their sweethearts. And that's fine. Those people should definitely pick up the charming and witty Made for Each Other, by the incomparable William Steig. But for those of you who are less romantic about Valentine's Day, Steig explores love gone awry in Sick of Each Other. Designed as a companion piece to Made for Each Other--sort of--this little square book takes an unflinching look at those couples for whom the thrill is decidedly gone. Looking like a series of New Yorker cartoons (not surprisingly, since this Caldecott Medal-winning artist has drawn for The New Yorker since 1930), each page depicts another humorously miserable pair, accompanied by Steig's dry punch line. A hefty pink-gowned damsel shrieks at a knight in shining armor, wilting lance in hand: "Who asked you to rescue me?" On another page, a couple strides toward one another, almost melding together, his generous nose mashing her generous nose. The caption: "Are we at an impasse?" Warning: this delightful, oft painfully poignant book is not for children at all. It should only be shared in strong relationships that have a twisted sense of humor--or sent to comfort a freshly single friend. --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars For people that hate Valentine's Day.......2007-01-17

This book, written and drawn by the brilliant William Steig, is specifically dedicated to the anti-Valentines. For mushy-lovey-dovey stuff, try Steig's "Made for Each Other." "Sick of Each Other" is a funny, smart collection of drawings that show the things we have all eventually thought about our relationships. My favorite is the drawing of the princess and the knight, wherein the princess is screaming, "Who asked you to rescue me?" If that is the kind of thing you like, then pick up this book.

1 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED (one star is too generous).......2002-06-03

this was a mistake on my part to buy.
I was not impressed, I thought it would be a whimsical look at how couples have gotten along for so long. Was I wrong. I was then happy to send it back the very day I recieved it.This was on a list of possible Valintines gift. Well if your going to break up, then yes buy it for your partner. Other wise, NOT!!

            5 out of 5 stars Parenting 101.......2001-11-09

We purchased the Parenting 101 book which has saved my life! It's so clearly presented and easy to understand. All the information piled into volumes of parenting books is easily and quickly presented in this bookazine. We've just ordered the discipline 101 book and are looking very forward to receiving it. I see other children in our play group and watch closely at the interaction between parent and child, and the outcome. Very interesting. I've seen many tantrums that could have been avoided with simple reasoning and many examples of bad behavior set by the parents and the children reprimanded the very next minute for doing the same thing. This book has allowed me to "see" from my son's point of view; something we forget as we age. I really feel I am a more understanding, patient, and all around better parent having read them; I wish I had the book when my son was an infant - I could have used it then. I began using Dr. Melanie's Parenting 101 book in 1984 when I had a new baby. I quickly realized that this was the most significantly positive step I could take in executing the most important job in the world; and I never looked back! I still use Dr. Melanie's principles with my son who is now 15 years old, and truly, I believe to be a well developed human being. I am eternally grateful to have been given the opportunity to apply this information from the "beginning." Blessed are the educators for they empower us all.

As the title states, this is a definitive exploration of the experience of US heroes while in Vietnam captivity. Hubble's research is exemplary. The book is fact based with little bias. If one is interested in this topic, then this is the FIRST book they should read - from there, the reader can find particular people/topics of interest and branch out. The next book to read is "Honor Bound" by Rochester and Kiley - a later text using declasified sources. In reading these two books, a reader will come to understand the POW experience in Vietnam and appreciate America's TRUE heroes. Personnaly, I feel these should be required reading for ALL Americans - particularly our youth.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Rersource.......2005-04-20

As a POW researcher, I would have been lost without Hubbel having gone before me to pave the way. This book continues to be a resource for me, a one of a kind history that says it all. I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand what the 566 POWs who were repatriated to the US in 1973 endured. The books by and about individuals give their person accounts, but Hubbel offers an objective analysis and global persecptive.

5 out of 5 stars Learn about moral courage practiced by the most vulnerable.......2005-04-13

I regretted loaning my Readers Digest Press hardcopy of this book and never seeing it return. I had to wait years for the re-publication of this marvelous book.

This book is the quintessential book on the POW experience in North Vietnam, and I have read many of them. The atrocities committed by the North Vietnamese captors were barbaric, horrific, and inhuman. The POWs mostly Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force pilots and crewmen were left with no guidance other than their consciences, their moral compass, their pride of service, their patriotism and an outmoded "Code of Conduct" to fight back against unspeakable tortures designed to win over and break the "American Enemy" and score political propaganda points. For these prisoners, the war was not over when they were shot down. A new and completely unexperienced war commenced upon their capture, a cold, calculating battle to exploit those most vulnerable in the Vietnam War in order to exact concessions from the United States of America.

Against the background of these torturous events, North Vietnam's enablers from the U.S. and international anti-war activists cravenly cooperated with North Vietnamese officials to further undermine the courageous efforts of our POWs who endured barbaric handling to not betray their country's honor.

Not all POWs held up to the rigors of the "Code of Conduct" as well as the greatest majority. However, fortunately not having walked in their shoes, I cannot judge their behavior. The activities of the most stalwart POWs as well as those who were less so are chronicled it this very readable and very moving book. These were the true "heroes" of the Vietnam War. They have never received due honor and recognition. This book attempts to do so in a very meaningful way. If you read ANY book on the Vietnam experience, this must be the one.

5 out of 5 stars A monumental account of POW captivity..............2003-06-02

Researched over a 9 year time span using information gleaned from hundreds of interviews from Vietnam war POW's, this extensive saga of captivity is truly outstanding in its depth.

John G. Hubbell not only relates the stories of high profile POW's from North Vietnam, he explores the many aspects and rigors faced by U.S. servicemen in the brutal Southern Vietnamese prison camps. In helping the reader to truly understand the entire experience, this being a cautionary note to everyone, torture methods suffered by our U.S. servicemen are described very graphically throughout the text and may be difficult to read about at times.

Included in the superbly written and well researched narrative are maps of the various prison compounds, photographs of POW's and their captors, and the entire list of repatriated servicemen at Operation Homecoming in 1973.

"P.O.W. - A definitive history of the American Prisoner of War Experience, 1964-1973" is a very comprehensive and powerful study that makes for a lasting, memorable, and emotional reading experience. Upon recommending this book to everyone with interests in POW captivity, I would also like to suggest the brilliant and epic work "Honor Bound - American Prisoners of War in Southeast Asia, 1961-1973".

This book fills a void in the history of the state of Nevada. But the author spends much time blind to the factors that devealop the state as a whole and their impact on Nevada's hispanics, and rather focuses on how the hispanics were just sufferers of white majority's whims. Nevada has a rich history of many races (Including many Chinese) and the facts presented in the book are befitting of Nevada's Hispanics. But the writing is choppy at best, and a second edition is sorely needed. The book seems as if it was very rushed towards it's finishing pages.

              Book Description

Leading international authorities report on their in vivo studies of neuron-glia interactions in animals with simple nervous systems (insects, fish, amphibians, and reptiles). Their work amounts to an in-depth account of many of the principal functions of glial cells: myelination, regulation of ionic environment, neurotransmitter compartmentation and neurotransmitter receptors, blood-brain barrier, regeneration, and aging. Part I examines the origin and role of glial cells during development across the phylogenetic spectrum, including the evolution of their particular functions. Part II discusses the physiological and metabolic interactions between neurons and glia, again across phylogenetic groups.

Neuron-Glia Interrelations During Phylogeny illuminates the evolution of the nervous system and expands our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in regeneration and central nervous system repair. It constitutes a virtual encyclopedia of up-to-date findings concerning the significant roles played by glial cells in neuronal development and function.
