5 out of 5 stars I give it an A..........2006-12-30

I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future math class. But overall, I give it an A...

5 out of 5 stars An education in perspective.......2005-09-20

This is one of the best and most informative books on the subject of perspective I've read or studied. Thank you very much for making this book available.

4 out of 5 stars Clear guide to basic perspective.......2004-06-18

For some reason, perspective is the boogey-man of many people learning to draw. It doesn't have to be that way. This book will help you put that sense of solidity and reality into a drawing.

This book gives a clear, step by step introduction to the basics of drawing in perspective. Interior and exterior; 1-, 2-, and 3-point; they're all here. The techniques are all graphical, and require only basic ability to handle simple drafting tools.

As the title says, this covers just the basics. It covers them thoroughly, so the hard-working reader should come away from it with very usable skills.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for engineers and architects........2003-02-02

I got this book because I had a floor plan that I wanted to make into a 3D or at least 2D home elevation. I've never taken a drawing course and before this, everything I drew was rubbery or floating. :-)

I found this book to be a great help, even in drawing circles, cylinders and curves. It explains shading and light sources, multiple vanishing points, intersecting just about anything and even gives you an idea of how to draw unique shapes in a 3D perspective. All the examples are step-by-step progressions of each concept and really show you how to do it.

You don't have to know sines and cosines, and you don't need a compass or protractor (although they might help). All you need is a pencil, ruler and eraser.

About 85% of the book is dedicated to shapes and structures, but there are also examples of furniture, cars and even people.

An excellent starting point for drawing in perspective.

        5 out of 5 stars A sculptress is born.......2002-05-05

I tell you if I were not in between jobs (gotta save my pennies for the rent) I would have ran out to the nearest art supply store and purchased some "sculpey" clay to begin my new hobby as a sculptor.

That's how easy Dottie Erdmann, the author, makes sculpture look. Erdman, a self-taught sculptor, echoed my sentiments exactly when she explained she had an interest in sculpture but didn't know where to begin. Armed with a little information she had gathered about sculpting she headed to her art supply store to purchase some clay and tools. A sculptress was born.

The book is an easy step-by-step guide complete with black and white photos and drawings. She starts off with super easy small objects: a lemon, followed by an apple, etc. She builds your skills and confidence with the smaller objects while advancing you to the more difficult projects in the book.

The only disappointment I had with the book were the tools she used to put the lines and detail in the clay. I couldn't tell which ones were being used for which project. But, as I read through the book, I began to learn the sculptor developes a feeling (comes with experience - trial and error) for which tool to use to make certain impressions in the clay. Besides that, the book was EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Excelllent For Physical/Mental Rehabilitation.......2001-01-12

As a provessional who works with patients who are recovering from physical and mental challenges I found Hands On Sculpting an enormously useful book. It doesn't "talk down" to the patients, but "talks with" them encouraging them to work with their hands and use their creativity while sculpting anything from very, very simple projects to projects of more complexity. The feeling of accomplishment, which builds self-esteem, is magnificent therapy during the recovery period.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, very informative.......1998-09-16

I enjoy Mrs. Erdmann's sculpting techniques very much. She came to my school and taught our class a lot of really neat stuff! Thanks to Mrs. Erdmann I am really having fun with sculpting.

        5 out of 5 stars A classroom hit!!.......1998-09-09

My son was fortunate to have the author, Dottie Erdmann visit and instruct his third grade class. The entire class was completely thrilled and amazed with what their hands can do. Hands on Sculpting is a must for every school.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! Takes you from basic to difficult pieces.......1998-09-01

My family found this book to be informative as well as creative and fun for all ages and skill levels. It's written in an easy to read format, just as if you were sitting in a private lesson. The pictures and drawings are very clear and helpful.

              Book Description

In Each Wild Idea, Geoffrey Batchen explores a wide range of photographic subjects, from the timing of the medium's invention to the various implications of cyberculture. Along the way, he reflects on contemporary art photography, the role of the vernacular in photography's history, and the Australianness of Australian photography.

The essays all focus on a consideration of specific photographs--from a humble combination of baby photos and bronzed booties to a masterwork by Alfred Stieglitz. Although Batchen views each photograph within the context of broader social and political forces, he also engages its own distinctive formal attributes. In short, he sees photography as something that is simultaneously material and cultural. In an effort to evoke the lived experience of history, he frequently relies on sheer description as the mode of analysis, insisting that we look right at--rather than beyond--the photograph being discussed. A constant theme throughout the book is the question of photography's past, present, and future identity.

William Honan has done history buffs and strategists alike a signal service in presenting this exciting biography of Hector C. Bywater. Not content with a biography of this journalist, spy and prophet, Honan attempts to do more: understand Bywater's intellectual development--a transformation which led him to foresee what others felt was absurd: a trans-Pacific war between the U.S. and Japan. Honan unearths Bywaters public debates with none other than Franklin D. Roosevelt--at that time a naive pacifist--as well as coming close to proving that Japan's Admiral Yamamoto seized on Bywater's ideas to create the Japanese strategy that culminated in Pearl Harbor and the rout of MacArthur in the Phillippines. For strategists, Visions of Infamy carves a statue to what it really takes to think with vigor and independence.

In the 1970s, Pierre Berton and his family recreated the trip down the Yukon made by his father, Francis George Berton, in 1898. This compelling story of the later journey is a valentine from son to father, a magical tale of a family adrift, and a poetic exploration of the region’s rich history. In experiencing this great wilderness, Berton and his family discover their deep connection to nature — and each other.

This book has much greater breadth than Black Hawk Down for instance, but it does not present much depth. It is a primer for a subject which is painfully undocumented.

I very much enjoyed the more panoramic view of the social/political environment in Somalia during that period - but I feel like the book really misses a chance to be an authoritative book on the subject. More background information, more detail on foreign troop deployments, diagrams, interviews - the framework is there to make a comprehensive history of the operation.

That being said, I doubt that was the goal of the authors, who did a splendid job documenting a truly awful piece of foreign policy - and a somewhat forgotten piece of egg on Mr. Clinton's face. I wonder if Bill saw Black Hawk Down?

As a professor of history I've read my share of historical narratives. This book ranks among the best for a quick read and understanding of the events that surrounded the commitment of advanced nations in the world to help a starving Somalia.
It ranges from international strategic planning and prosecution of hidden agendas, to the horrors experienced by those on the ground that ranked with the liberation of Dachau and Auschwitz.
The authors -- both retired American military officers -- even cover such detail as the disbandment of the Canadian Parachute Regiment following Somalia, as only retired officers can tell it.
The book "Blackhawk Down" was supremely well done, but it only focused on one battle. "Doorway To Hell" tells the whole story ... and at points, it is a hard story to choke down.
Don't buy this book as a present for some weenie, thin-
skinned, get-offended-at-everything, yuppie, politically-correct, mucker. It takes someone with enough sand to deal with the hard truth to appreciate it.

I was in Somalia as a member of the Army's 10th Mountain Division and bar none, I can't imagine any book that could be better written about the situation in Somalia in 1993 than this one. I've bought copies for everyone in my family because by reading it, they will know what I went through.
"Blackhawk Down" was brilliantly done, but it was only about a 2 day battle in Mogadishu in October, 1993. "Doorway To Hell" is about the whole operation and it is so accurate, I had flashbacks when I read about the horrific conditions which I lived through.
It is a book that will be appreciated especially by anyone who was in country, and will be hated by those who made the policy decisions that caused the U.S. to be there in the first place.
I was especially impressed by the breadth and scope of the narrative. It ranges from the policies in the United Nations, White House and Pentagon regarding Somalia; to the experiences of the common soldier who went head to head with Somalian warlord gunmen.
Brigadier General Wheeler and LTC Roberts have done a great service to every one of the 80,000 American veterans who served there and each one of them should get a copy of this book.

This is a book that should be read by everyone in a policymaking position in Washington down to a Marine or soldier in a frontline unit. It covers the Somalia operation from the strategic to the tactical to the impact on the individual. The reader will have a hard time putting this down and there will be times when reading it, the reader will be angry at the incompetence of decisionmakers, sad to the point of tears with regard to the horror and heartache that our troops were exposed to, and extremely proud of the work that our American soldiers and Marines did to help save a starving nation. I am buying copies of this book for presents but only for those who are intelligent enough to understand how complex and challenging was Somalia.

5 out of 5 stars A Disaster when US troops are placed under UN command.......2002-07-08

General Wheeler and Colonel Roberts have put together a blockbuster that exposes what happens when US troops are placed under United Nations command (foreign officers), and are subject to ill-defined missions then progress in "mission creep" to such fiascos as depicted in the movie "Blackhawk Down." More importantly, they show the REAL reasons our troops were sent to Somalia that include the economic (oil) and strategic (Somalia guards the entrance to the Red Sea and is across from Yemen). One also finds that Osama bin Ladin's "al Qaida" is responsible for training and equpping the Somalis, and still exist there in training camps on the Horn of Africa. A must read, before it's too late and we end up in another quagmire like this one.

Hirsch's account of growing up German Jewish in England is wonderful - while his story is often laugh out loud funny, it remains a thoughtful exploration of the repercussions of the Holocaust and the pain in growing up with a difficult father. After Hirsch sets out on adulthood, his own story is not as compelling, but his encounters with elderly Holocaust survivors, as well as his attempts to come to terms with his father, are still fascinating.
