Great ideas!.......2003-10-02
Originally I bought this book for scrapbooking ý great images. Then I realized why not personal greeting cards for birthdays and holidays?! And when a friend wanted a theme for a party, I used the images from the book for invitations, placemats, centerpieces, coasters etc. And Iýve only just begun.
Wow!.......2003-09-30
If you like decoupage, get this book! I have already made two projects inspired by the pages. I am thinking about getting another copy of the book because I forgot to make color copies of the prints I used before I glued them down and I want to use them again.
Great book!.......2003-09-30
This is a terrific book! There is a huge selection of art, and all of it is very high quality. I love the colors and there are wonderful ideas in the beginning of the book. This is a perfect companion to their first book The Decoupage Gallery.

Seattle Then and Now (Then & Now)

Book Description
Seattle is famous for its breathtaking natural environment--from the islands and waterways of Puget Sound to the old-growth forests of the Olympic Range to magnificent Mount Rainier. Now, in celebration of this scenic city, Wild Seattle explores the incredible natural treasures to be found within a 90-minute drive from downtown. More than 130 stunning full-color images of wildlands, parks, and preserves by renowned nature photographers Terry Donnelly and Mary Liz Austin are perfectly complemented by an evocative text by acclaimed author and Seattle native Timothy Egan.
The natural landscapes of the greater Seattle area are remarkable in scope. Separate chapters in the book showcase "wild in the city" retreats such as Schmitz and Discovery Parks; the scenic islands of Puget Sound; the Olympic Peninsula, including the eastern side of Olympic National Park and the Kitsap Peninsula; Mount Rainier and its environs, from Mount Rainier National Park to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge; and the magnificent North Cascades, including Cascade Pass, the Skagit, and the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. In each chapter, the photo gallery gathers both glorious panoramas and intimate close-ups, revealing the incredible diversity of flora and fauna to be found in each area. An afterword by longtime conservationist Doug Scott highlights the efforts--both past and present--to protect the Seattle area's natural habitats in the face of rampant urban growth.
Wild Seattle is sure to entice residents and visitors alike to explore familiar landscapes and discover surprising wild places while deepening their appreciation for these incomparable natural treasures.

My Favorite "Seattle" book!.......2007-02-06
This book does a terrific job of capturing the beauty of the Seattle area. It's a perfect blend of landscapes, lighthouses, animals, city landmarks, mountain ranges, and waterways in each season.
Even though it is titled "Wild Seattle" it encompasses much more including Skagit Valley (tulips), the San Juans, Deception Pass, orcas, the Olympics, Cascades, and plenty of written information as well.
It's my favorite Seattle book!

Green Arrow Team-Ups.......2005-08-21
You need to ignore the title of this book. Batman is the featured character only in the second part. Green Arrow is the continuing character in the whole collection.
This trade paperback was put together from 3 issues of "Legends of the DC Universe" and a 5-issue run of "Legends of the Dark Knight."
In the first storyline, test pilot Hal Jordan (Green Latern) and wealthy industrialist Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) investigate a rebellion in a fictitious far-eastern nation. It takes us back to the first meeting of these two heroes, early in their careers. They discover the ruler of the nation may be friends with the U.S., but has only his personal interest at heart. We get lots of Hal being heroic and stolid. Ollie moves from a go-for-the-gusto kind of adventurer to realizing there's more to the world than beating bad guys. The green heroes eventually side with the rebels and take down the dictator.
In the second and longer story, we finally get to Batman, though not till the end of Part I. Oliver Queen is completely disenchanted with the corruption he finds in his rounds as Green Arrow. He literally heads for the hills, dumping his multi-million dollar businesses. An attempted assasination draws him into a mystery and another first meeting -- with Bruce Wayne.
Green Arrow and Batman uncover a coup attempt in another fictional far-eastern nation. We get a brief return of the petty dictator from the first story (now as a flunky). Then we meet the three real villains, a Fu Manchu-like prime minister, intent on rule, the powerful leader of an assassins-for-hire cult, and a Joker-like parody of Green Arrow.
Batman investigates and Green Arrow loses his nerve. Finally, Batman faces down the ultimate assasin; Green Arrow gets back his bow-slinging chops, and justice is served.
The collection is not great, but does have a lot of strong points. Writer Dennis O'Neal focuses on character, with nice insights on the three leads and some very good secondary players. Artists Land, Cariello, Giordano and Ryan give us some great layouts, powerful poses and flashy explosions.
Though from the late-nineties, the sensibilites of these tales are neo-seventies. G.L. and G.A. begin the social consciousness trip that writer O'Neil first took them through in that era.
The best point of this book is the retro-history of the three heroes. Besides setting the stories early in their career, O'Neil gives a nice intro and afterword on the life and times of the Emerald Archer.
Overall, Batman fans will be disappointed by his limited role. This is really a book for Green Arrow followers and afficianados of the work of Dennis O'Neil.
Avoid this book like the plague.......2004-01-01
The story in this book is predictable, unexciting and is simply not worth the time or money. The first part is a story about how Green Arrow and Green Lantern try to beat a very colorful and prdictable and rather cheesy villain. The second story is where Green Arrow teams up with Batman in order to defeat the same cheesy villain who have accumulated more wickedness (rather cheesiness) over the years. The writing is very dated and more suited for comics from the 80's. For the modern reader, it is ill-suited and they will not enjoy it, especially when compared to the quality of recent stories. It is simply not a good Batman, Green Arrow or Green Lantern story.
Misleading Rehash.......2003-12-22
The first thing that a person notices when seeing the book is that it has Batman's name written on the cover when in fact he does not appear until later in the book.
The book is a collection of two stories, both appearing in previous issues of Green Lantern and Legends of the Dark Knight in comic book form. The first has Greena Arrow teaming up with Green Lantern and the second one has the Green Arrow teaming up with the legendary Dark Knight, Batman. The stories have nothing to do with one another, so it would seem strange that a book has the mantle of the Bat on it, when in fact, the main character through both of them is Green Arrow. This is the main misleading theme in this and one can wonder why would DC do such a thing, excepy knowing full well that a book with Green Arrow is not going to sell as much than having the Bat on the cover and in the book.
How about the stories? Both feature the Green Arrow, an extremely arrogant and obnoxious character that is extremely self conceited, you sometimes root for the villain to beat the heck out of him. He resembles Marvel's character Hawkeye in terms of having those same character flaws, but in the latter, you understand where he comes from and you can never go wrong with Hawkeye as he is considered the spirit of the Avengers where Captain America is the hear.
In the first story, he teams up with the original Green Lantern, Hal Jordan and the story is a mundane one where they have to save a nation from utter destruction from the clutches of a tyrant general.
The second one has him team up with Batman and the story still has the same tyrant in it, but now he's living in asylum in another rogue nation. Both stories are truly not worth the read and are very poor compared to the rich texture of how Batman has evolved through the years and what he is right now.
In all, the book is not worth reading as other great works that feature the Dark Knight. Batman simply is too dark and foreboding to work with Green Arrow.
Book Description
Long before feminism became a potent force in our time, Ruth Gruber was already blazing a trail for later generations of women. Now in paperback for the first time, this captivating memoir covers the first twenty-five years of an inspiring life, including these historic moments: Gruber’s unprecedented academic career, which reached its zenith in 1932, when at twenty she became the world’s youngest Ph.D. as a visiting American student at Cologne University, her return to Nazi Germany in 1935, and the rallies she attended where Hitler inveighed against “international Jews” like her; and her first stint as a foreign correspondent, when she became the only journalist to report from the Soviet Arctic, traveled in open cockpit seaplanes, met utopians who extolled Stalin’s system, and gulag inmates who told her the bitter truth about his terrible schemes. Gruber writes with warmth, compassion, and humor, offering a life story that will be long remembered by all history lovers, adventurers, and women and men of all ages.

ruth gruber=excellent story teller.......2006-11-10
the author, ruth gruber, tells a fascinating story.she is an amazing woman, very bright and gutsy.one feels as if he or she is going along with ms. gruber on her journeys. she is an accomplished writer and journalist. i recommend this book for others who want to go with her on her journeys.
The life of an amazing young woman.......2002-08-21
This very engaging book covers so many experiences that you have to keep reminding yourself it's only about Ruth Gruber's first 25 years. While others have commented negatively on her simple writing style, I found it refreshing. She doesn't come across as a Ph.D. disseminating her vast knowledge, but as the young woman she was at the time, amazed at being able to have all the experiences she had. She seems to write from that viewpoint, so that even though she wrote this book much later in life, you feel like you're having a chat with "Rut," as the Russians call her, who is a very intelligent, but still very young woman. She apparently based this book on notes she took at the time, so its youthful attitude is authentic. Be warned, though, if you're older than 25 you're going to come away from this book feeling like a complete slacker.
interesting woman; boring book.......2002-07-23
I bought this because I was interested in early women's lib-ers who "just did it" and in her 1930s era access to Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union. She certainly is an interesting woman with a will power, but her access and her insights into these two countries were minimal and superficial. While she ackowledges that she was a pawn, the information she does present adds nothing to the understanding of those two countries or to what it must have been like to BE there. The Artic adventures are more promising, but like the rest of the book suffer from a really quite juvenile writing style that does little to effectively or movingly capture the moments she experiences. Finally, her lack of introspection seem to suggest that she really did "just do it" without much of a real reason and without much struggle and that just isn't very interesting reading.
Inspiring.......2002-01-07
I was inspired to purchase this book along with Haven after watching the mini-series on TV. Ruth Gruber is a woman definitely ahead of her time. She puts modern day "women's libbers" to shame. This is a woman who, when she decided to do something, didn't live her amazing life so she could show the world what a woman could do. She lived her amazing life because she took advantage of any and all opportunities offered her. She didn't say, "Let me do it so I can show the world a woman can do it." She just said, "Let me do it because I can." She should be an example to all -- men and women alike. I would recommend this book and Haven to anyone interested in learning more about the history of the period as well as to anyone simply interested in a good read. Ms. Gruber writes her books in a way that brings them alive. They are not historical textbooks, nor are they "me" books. They are simply wonderfully inspiring books about a wonderfully inspiring woman.
Backstory for HAVEN Miniseries.......2001-02-10
Many of you who see the CBS miniseries will be reading and loving HAVEN,the book, but may be puzzled that the material on Ruth's experiences in 1930s Germany are --missing. Look no further! The information is here. If you are hooked on HAVEN you will want to read this book also, because the flashbacks to Germany are entirely taken from AHEAD OF TIME. It's also a great book. As Joan Michel wrote in HADASSAH MAGAZINE upon first publication in 1991:
-"Talk about courageous pioneers and voyages into uncharted waters, about plumbing the depths of the human spirit, of discovering new worlds and uncovering hidden teasures..Ruth Gruber takes us on an extraordinary personal journey."
Ruth Gruber, my stepmother, is 89 and I can vouch that she remains one of the most brilliant and adventurous women you could ever hope to meet, as well as THE BEST storyteller. She learned story telling from a consumate artist, Virginia Woolf, on whom Ruth wrote the very first doctoral thesis, conferred by the Univerity of Cologne in 1931 when she was but twenty. The University boasted that Ruth was "the world's youngest PhD" and in honor of her achievement, Cologne's Lord Mayer Konrad Adenauer presented her with a gift of two magnificent art books. As she left his chambers, the future United Nations leader placed his hand on her head, as in a benediciton."Bless you my child. May God go with you."
And- it seems as though God did!

For those who cannot share their stories.......2005-12-16
My father was a member of Co K. Unfortunately, the writers could find him at the time the book was published because he passed away in 1970.
For anyone who no longer has their loved one with them (from Co K), this is a great book to discover what they experienced as a Rifleman in the Army. I had only my father's discharge papers to tell me what he did and his job was listed as simply "Rifleman". Since the records from this time period are lost (in a fire, I believe) there are only personal accounts of what happened. Thank you to the authors for bringing my father's experiences to life.
Dedicated to Ernest W. Bowers.
Stunning history brought to life.......2002-05-04
It is almost tragic that this excellent, personal, detailed and brutally honest, heroic and even quietly poetic memoir has fallen out of print. This, perhaps one of the finest histories ever written about WWII, tells the story of the front line soldier from the first person.
Long before Saving Private Ryan inspired Tom Brokaw and the rest to capitalize on the rightfully named "Greatest Generation", Cambell and Leinbaugh's book captured the harrowing narrative of combat that so many men of that era are sadly taking to the grave with them. This book personlizes the story in a voice that appears to have been culled from a combat veteran reunion. The Men of Company K willingly recountsthe horror of battle as a permanent record. A warning really as to what freedom ultimately costs. May we be damned should we ever forget.
As a historical document, it boils in as much action and tension as any Clancy novel.
Ambrose frequently has used The Men of Company K as a carefully cited reference in his longer works. This alone may be a testament to its greatest. Please search this fine work out.
Family History.......2002-01-11
I can not begin to express to you how much this book means to me. My grandfather was Clarence Jarvis. He was one of the men in Company K. We really never knew anything about his death. He died when my father was only an infant. To the writers of this book I say Thank You !! The personnal touches brought my grandfather into our lives some 50 years later. I only wish more history books were written this way.
A superb account of European ground warfare.......2001-09-06
This is a moving account of the combat experience of one rifle company as told by the commanders. What makes this book so special is all the personal recollections that are compiled. The men of company K get their first battle after D Day in Holland. They continue east through the battle of the bulge, the crossing of the Rhine, and occupation duty in the conquered Germany. The little personal touches are on every page. One man defines REMFS as "any sob behind my foxhole." A future mathematics professor uses geometry and a map to plot a German rocket launching site. The description of their Christmas Eve 1944 battle in the bulge, and how a Belgium village renamed their main street to honor this battle brings goosebumps to my arms as I recall it. One man blinded in this battle by tank gun fire was happy to know that his dreadful wound was his Christmas gift of survival and evacuation to the rear. Others recall the blinded soldier crawling over them to the rear without a guide and wishing them all "Merry Christmas" as he groped his way to the medics miles behind the battle. It was a battle in which company K fixed and held a numerically superior armored force with only rifles and grenades. In one captured German city with still working phones, a German speaking GI got a call through to German Army HQ in Berlin to tell them to "expect company K in about two weeks." This book is full of personal accounts of horror and humor, terror and triumph. This book evokes visualization by the reader like no other account of infantry combat in Europe. I only wish that the publisher would put it back in print! It should be required reading for high school U.S. History classes. Not because it is a historical text, but rather for the personal context it gives to such a critical point in history.

WW2 In-Depth account of Day to Day operations in war.......1998-03-14
This book is excellent, sometimes rambling from one person in the story to another, this makes the book seem alive. The story is about a WW2 Infantry Company that is put into combat (green) and looses many men from wounds, cold and combat fatigue. Overall a very realistic and moving book of the realities of war and the interaction of Officer and Men as they fight the European theatre.

Book Description
