    Book Description

Meet Ellen, our curly-haired, exuberantly imaginative heroine. Is she a world-renowned detective who lives in an 11-star super-deluxe hotel, or just a young girl living with her parents at their modest desert motel? Does she have a swimming pool and a Siberian silver-scaled lizard? And does she find Princess Zara's crown jewels at the end of the book? Ellen might not always tell the ordinary facts, but in her own fanciful way, she gets right to the heart of the matter.

5 out of 5 stars Fun story, engaging illustrations!.......2006-11-10

A fun look at how a children use their imagination and sometimes gets ahead of themselves! I think everyone's guilty of that now and again! A delightful read for young and old with exceptional art by Kelly Denato! The illustrations heighten Ellen's imaginary world and invite our own imaginations to have some fun!

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking illustration .......2006-07-13

My daughter LOVES THIS BOOK!!! Every childrens book I see usually has some kind of computer generated art or something else really lame but the art in this book is AMAZING. What imagination and color!! Kelly Denato is clearly an engaged, thoughtful, and articulate artist. The fantasy/reality diptychs are so stunning and clever. Capturing the imagination of a child (with a book no less) in this day and age is more difficult rocket science. This is a grand achievement. When's the next book coming out!?!?! Ellen dolls? Maybe a cartoon? congrats!!

5 out of 5 stars Imagination Runs Wild.......2006-06-14

From the first moment I saw the smiling wonder in Ellen's face on the cover, I knew this was going to be good. Then I opened the book to find it was ten times the fun I had anticipated!! The illustration is incredibly whimsical and playful - it takes you inside the rich imagination of Ellen and her world. The kids absolutely love this book and continue to request it at bedtime. They love the different characters and laugh out loud when they turn the pages. I can't wait to see whats next for this gifted artist!

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-05-20

5 stars? I give this book 11 stars!
The artwork in, Ellen's 11-Star Spectacular Super-Deluxe Hotel is amazing! I can just imagine a child falling asleep with this book everynight, begging her parents to read it over and over and over.

This book contains stunning images for use as a graphic resource, or inspiration. All the illustrations are stored in high-resolution format on the enclosed free CD-ROM and are ready to use for professional quality printed media and web page design. The pictures can also be used to produce postcards, or to decorate your letters, flyers, etc. They can be imported directly from the CD into most design, image- manipulation, illustration, word-processing and e-mail programs; no installation is required. For most applications, single images can be used free of charge. Please consult the introduction to this book, or visit our website for conditions. The art of faience tile making had found its way from Arabic North Africa from where it had slowly progressed northward via Spain, Italy (mainly the city of Faenza, hence the French "faience") and Antwerp to arrive about 1570 in the northern Dutch province of Friesland. The Royal Tichelaar Makkum from which the designs in this book originate is the oldest enterprise in the Netherlands and indeed ranks it among the oldest companies in the world. Many of the designs this factory has been using over the years have been compiled in an ancient volume kept in the historical collection of their archives, along with many examples of actual antique tiles. For the first time a selection of these has now been made available for publication in this book.

          Book Description

The most hilarious, whimsical outdoor moments captured on film, from twenty-five years of living Outside.

Short of near disaster or the sublime, what are our most memorable outdoor moments made of? The totally surprising, sometimes bizarre oddball moments that catch our psyches off guard and strike our funny bones to the core. Call it the wild side factor.

The editors of Outside proudly present outstanding images gleaned from 300 issues of their back-page "Parting Shots" photo feature. It's their way of celebrating the pratfalls and singular coincidences of an outdoor life—the comic circumstances of relatively tame mammals (us) spending more and more time closer and closer to large, wild animals. These images are a rare chance to look into the wide world outside and laugh at both ourselves and that infinitely wondrous, entertaining three-ring circus we call the universe. 67 four-color photographs.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Epic laughs ensue.......2005-04-22

This is a collection of photos from the "Parting Shot" page of Outside Magazine. Each of the photos is real, and works with the themes of Outside Magazine. (It's an outdoor adventure magazine. So expect extreme sports, animals, and a quirky look at stuff.)

Even if you never look at Outside Magazine, and even if you'll never think of yourself as an outdoor adventurer, these are wonderful pictures. Visitors grab it and giggle just as they do with our collection of Charles Addams cartoons -- and for much the same reason. These photographs run the gamut from beautiful to frightening to charming, but most are laugh-out-loud funny.

The reprints are a high enough quality that you can count on leaving this book out for years of enjoyment. Bring a smile to your face, and look at this book. Give a smile, and show someone else this book.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating Moments of Beauty and Silliness.......2004-04-30

'The Polar Bear Waltz' is a wonderful book taken from the best of the popular "Parting Shot" feature in 'Outside' magazine, which monthly showcases a wild, wonderful, beautiful, funny, or just plain quirky shot taken by a top rate nature photographer.

The book contains a brief introduction and the remainder is the beautiful photographs, with photography information yet no captions to allow the reader to mentally construct their own. The photos are breathtaking, many involving animals, many human interest shots, or even an occasional landscape. My favorites have to be the 'polar bear waltz' photo by Frans Lanting in Hudson Bay, Canada (p.77), the 'smiling saguaro' by Joe McDonald taken in Arizona (p. 79), the 'north pole' shot by Per Breihagen (pp. 72-73), and the 'whimsical ostrich' shot by Kevin Horan taken in Addington, Oklahoma (p.45). All of the shots in this book are great, but perhaps the most touching is the photo from Mount Elbert, Colorado by Dave Showalter on September 16, 2001 (p.96), surely one of the most inspiring photographs I have ever seen.

This is a beautiful and affordable book of some of the most truly amazing and stunning, sometimes playful, sometimes serious, but always magnificent photographs that I have ever seen. I recommend it to anyone.

          3 out of 5 stars mostly human.......2004-01-01

Althou there are some "silly" animal shots, most are humans, especially skier and other atheletes. Don't buy it for the animal lover.

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, and funny too.......2003-01-03

I bought this book for my brother for Christmas. After he opened it, it went around the whole house and everyone loved the pictures. This is a great coffee table book and one that can be enjoyed over and over.

5 out of 5 stars How to stuff a wild stocking.......2002-11-30

Simply a great gift book for anyone who loves wild places, adventure, the absurdity of life, and a good laugh.

            Book Description

"Trouble began in 1963 . . . the age-old trouble." Unable to attend college, Beverly Ann Donofrio lost interest in everything but riding around in cars, drinking, smoking, and rebelling against authority. After her teenage marriage failed, Donofrio found herself at an elite New England university, books in one arm, child on the other. Then, furnished with ambition, dreams, and five hundred dollars, she took herself and her son to New York City to begin a career and a life.

An outrageous and touching memoir, Riding in Cars with Boys is about becoming middle-class and the compromises made between being your own person and fitting into society. But mostly it's a story of a teenage mother who, as her son grows up, becomes an adult herself.

5 out of 5 stars Great must read - diary type/learn from my past-type book.......2007-08-23

This is a great book! An easy, entertaining read. My mistake was reading in bed at night, ending up staying up way too late!

The author puts her readers in the "cars" with her as she tell about her life.

            It is a terrific read!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-07-09

This was probably one of the best stories for women, I have ever read. I don't think there is a woman out there who couldn't relate to what this girl/woman went through in her life. The way this woman pursued her dreams no matter what life dished out to her. How she came to realize the things she was doing wrong without someone constantly telling her, even though they did, and how she took credit for the things she did right. Fantastic read!

5 out of 5 stars Touching and bold.......2006-01-30

Donofrio's look at her life is a boutching story of betrayal, friendship and love. I found that I frequently teared up and laughed out loud from her descriptions of her friends, lovers, and family. Her bravery at being able to admit the regret that she often felt was, at times, overwhelming, and the fact that she learned how much she truly loved her child was amazing.

2 out of 5 stars SKIP THE BOOK, JUST WATCH THE MOVIE.......2006-01-27

Need I say more than the above title suggests? Okay, so the upside of this book is that it has important life lessons and epiphanies from the voice of experience. There are some touching moments in this book, but even then there is still something the author is lacking. I saw the movie when it was in theatres and I have just finished reading the book. I liked the movie soooooooooo much better than the book. The movie was funny, entertaining, touching, personal, and sad at times. The book did not captivate me at all. I had trouble staying focused. Considering Beverly Donofrio's credentials--a bachelor's degree in English from Wesleyan University and a master of fine arts in creative writing--her quality of writing is very poor. Her quality of writing is more like someone who has only a highschool education, if even that. And not to go off topic, but since Donofrio has a master of fine arts in creative writing from a top notch school like Columbia U, then why doesn't she write about something else besides her getting pregnant in highschool and how that has changed her life? I mean, after all, the MFA is in creative writing, meaning she should be more creative rather than just write autobiographies all the time. She has only wrote 2 books--Riding in Cars With Boys, and Looking For Mary, both about her getting pregnant at a young age. If you liked the movie, just leave it at that. Don't bother reading the book unless you enjoy getting disappointed. And if you're interested in a novel or autobiography about teen pregnancy, then go to the local library. Don't get this one. There's other novels covering the same subject that are far superior to this one.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-07-22

When I first saw the movie-I was hoping the book would be as good. And it was. This book is not boring, and it's not a book you'll read a chapter of and be lost already. It has a lot of history in it, between the Vietnam War and what life was like in the 1970's. I reccomend this book to anyone who has an open mind on reading, this book was incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Embracing the overseas living experience.......2003-03-06

This compendium of travel stories provides essays by Isabel Allende, Jan Morris, and more notable travel writers and provides an unusual focus on experiences of living abroad. Essays range from the humorous to the observation of cultural differences as they provide both entertaining and enlightening autobiographies embracing the overseas living experience. A House Somewhere is perfect as a leisure literary pursuit and highly recommended for the traveler who contemplates residency in another country.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams of Escape.......2002-12-23

A collection of essays and stories about living in foreign countries. Books about this usually contain certain predictable themes. The writer is usually English or American, doesn't have a regular job, and the natives among whom he lives are lovable eccentrics with fractured English. It's commonly an island, or somewhere remote and warm, and when we next read about the writer he's no longer living there. (Jan Morris points out of these cliches in her or his introductory essay, "Some Thoughts from Abroad")
Some of the pieces fall into these obvious categories but one writer is Indian, one Welsh, and one South American. In three of them the foreign country is the United States. Others are set in the Philippines, Paris, Provence, Italy, Kenya, Singapore, Mexico, Ireland, Morocco, Japan, China, Egypt, Thailand, Turkey and Greece. Tragedy strikes in two of them but the mood is mostly light-hearted and humorous. I enjoyed them all. They made me appreciate electricity, paved roads, and being able to turn on a faucet and drink the water.

Classic book with good following. Some doubt as to where the alleged true story ends, but it is a great read nonetheless (if you can find a copy).

5 out of 5 stars One of the best war books of all time.......2003-09-13

Hans and company are back in this book filled with excitement and chaos. It is also a tragedy, since the American advisors could have potentially prevented the American debacle in Vietnam if only the brass would have listened. Perhaps they did, but they did not take it seriously, and many American soldiers needlessly lost their lives when they were unprepared for a war the likes of which they had never fought before. Even more ominous is the current situation in Iraq which reminds me of the same situation that we had in Vietnam, since it seems that we have learned little about guerilla warfare. How different the situation would be if we had Hans's experience in guerilla warfare in this situation...

Unfortunately, we are in a bad situation and we cannot act as Hans and his comrades did. We cannot simply use poison gas to flush out hundreds of guerillas without causing an outcry and hundreds of civilian casualties. We cannot act as Hans did, as his savagery was what made him the most successful anti-guerilla fighter of all time.

Anyway, the Batallion of the Damned (now called Task-Force G) causes massive damage to the Vietcong and the Khmer Rouge with the help of American equipment and advisors. This book will clarify the true horror of the wars in Vietnam.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-02-07

This book exposes the light on subjects far forgotten in the annals of History. Few ever knew about former Waffen S.S. commandos joining the French Forgien Legion and even fewer know that those who did fought the Viet Minh with their own tactics. In Devils Guard II you will read on accounts of Mustard Gas used on a supply depot, explosive bullets, ambushing the Viet Minh on their own turf, and long range raids far into North Vietnam. This book is a must have for all Military Historians or anybody else intresed in the infamous French Indo-China War. Belive me when I say this book is a great read. I have read mine so many times I had to tape the cover and spine together to keep it from falling apart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, remarkable, thrilling, story of the one time SS........1999-02-25

Must read! The continuing saga of Hans, Reidl, Altrieter and the other men of the one time Battalion of the Damned. In this EPIC they are soldiers of fortune, working for, or rather paid by the government of South Vietnam. Their only mission is to stop the Vietcong by ANY means they see fit. Accompanying them are American "advisors," or rather the American CIA are advised, by the one time German SS, on how to create a guerilla fighting force (10th group ?). The French pull out of Vietnam, yet Hans and his "Cammando of Death" continue to surprise the enemy, destroying, killing, and impeding the communist advance into South Vietnam.

                          Book Description

"If it were necessary, for some curious legal reason, to draw a clear line between human and nonhuman--for example, if a group of australopithecines were to appear and one had to decide if they were to be protected by Fair Employment Laws or by the ASPCA--I would welcome them as humans if I knew that they were seriously concerned about how to bury their dead." In this witty and wise way, Lawrence Slobodkin takes us on a spirited quest for the multiple meanings of simplicity in all facets of life.

Slobodkin begins at the beginning, with a consideration of how simplicity came into play in the development of religious doctrines. He nimbly moves on to the arts--where he ranges freely from dining to painting--and then focuses more sharply on the role of simplicity in science. Here we witness the historical beginnings of modern science as a search for the fewest number of terms, the smallest number of assumptions, or the lowest exponents, while still meeting criteria for descriptive accuracy. The result may be an elegant hypothetical system that generates the apparent world from less apparent assumptions, as with the Newtonian revolution; or it may mean deducing non-obvious processes from everyday facts, as with the Darwinian revolution.

Slobodkin proposes that the best intellectual work is done as if it were a game on a simplified playing field. He supplies serious arguments for considering the role of simplification and playfulness in all of our activities. The immediate effect of his unfailingly captivating essay is to throw open a new window on the world and to refresh our perspectives on matters of the heart and mind.

I agree with the editorial review, this book may entertain a bit, but does not enlighten. It does not merit a detailed review.

It may be worth the $1.08 asked for in the used book section not including shipping so look elsewhere for your science education and entertainment.
