disappointing.......2006-08-25
This book was recommended as a guide to developing sculpture gardens and outdoor living spaces. It is not. The photographs appear to be very dated as are the subject courtyards. It is a dull, unispired book.
A rare look at the function, definition and purpose of a courtyard.......2006-01-05
Douglas Keister's Courtyards: Intimate Outdoor Spaces takes a rare look at the function, definition and purpose of a courtyard surveying courtyards around the world which grace both home and public establishment. Courtyards can be adapted to both large and small spaces, vary in greenery, stonework, and lighting, and are perfect additions for homeowners seeking to remodel with style. Turn a backyard into a courtyard setting or consider many options through the phone color exhibition of photographer Keister, paired with text which considers design options and successful examples.
What a Beautiful Book.......2005-10-01
The author has definitely done his homework. We are in the process of creating a courtyard in our back yard after having added a sunroom this past season. Our theme has been "New Orleans" for the sunroom ... even though we live in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we have visited New Orleans many times and consider it our "home away from home". There are courtyards from New Orleans featured in this book - but many from other places as well. Whatever you are looking for in courtyard ideas, you will find it here.

A wonderful book!.......2007-09-01
Even if you never picked up a brush. Or didn't know how to read. Anyone could get an idea from this book. Maybe it's boring to others. Maybe because he does everthing step by step. So that you can make your own creations. I have never used oils in my life. But I wanted to learn. My Grandmother was a great artist. But when she could teach me, I was to young. When I was old enough, she passed away. I hope she can look down and see. I really did enjoy what she made. Now, I can make something beautiful too. I bought this and the red cover book. Super
An Abundance Of "Happy Old Trees".......2006-08-01
Good old Bob Ross! I used to watch his series in high school and his shows were great. This book conveys their tone and has the added bonus of giving us his finished landscapes to look at as long as we want. I got this book so I could see the paintings, but under his step by step instruction I've also tried my hand at creating my own---and making art this nice isn't as easy as Bob makes it look! Whether you want to use this as a how-to guide for your own time in front of a canvas, or you simply like Bob Ross' artwork, this is a friendly visit with everyone's favorite PBS guru of oil painting.
The Joy of Painting .......2006-06-30
I actually purchased this book as a gift. The comments I received were: Good book but, not much variety in details of paintings.
Ideas for the budding artist........2006-03-23
I found this book full of ideas and gives the brain the chance to see Beauty in this sometimes sad world.I have found that each book I have bought, including this one, gives the artist a sure fire way of producing something...even though I now tend to use imagination .Simply illustrated and easy to follow, you will be happy to follow Bob in his Wonderful Lessons.Excellent and instructive for the beginner and the established painter.
Did Van Gogh have a 'fro?.......2002-05-30
It is ironic that the best recommendation for this book comes from someone who gave it one star! Study this book and you will be able to do what Bob does... Serious growing dynamic artists will surely look beyond this book but maybe they should at least take a peek. If Van Gogh had been as loved and/or recognizable in his time as Bob Ross was, he probably wouldn't have cut his own ear off. As a nearly elderly weekend painter I heartily recommend this book. I think my only visual handicap so far is that it's time for new bifocals though the visually verbose would certainly disagree.

Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition)
ASIN: 0865592179
Release Date: 2005-02-15 |
Book Description
Photographer Tokihiro Sato (b. 1957), along with contemporaries Toshio Shibata and Naoya Hatakeyama, focuses on the shifting landscape of Modern Japan. Using a 8 x 10 inch camera fitted with a darkening filter, Sato creates lengthy exposures in which he moves throughout landscapes, pausing periodically with a mirror that reflects sunlight back at the camera. The light is recorded as traces of his presence, but he himself is rendered invisible by his motion.

Book Description
This third installment of Rich Larson's ode to the undead starts off with a wonderfully naughty wrap-around cover painting by Fastner & Larson. In addition to his usual macabre mixing of horror and erotica, HH3 also contains a secret origin tale of the House itself! You dare not miss this spine-snapping story which both lifts and separates the reader into new realms of terror! It's all good sexy fun and horror!
Customer Reviews:
Better book with a different title.......2003-10-25
Rich Larson is definitely an excellent penciler, and he has a style that makes me think back to the pin ups that followed classic horror comics. However, this book's title does it an injustice. When you hear the words Haunted House, you instantly think Ghost and other things that go bump in the night. With exception of 3 pics in this book all the others would loosely fall into other formats ranging from basic fantasy, pirates, Amazon warriors, and Sci-Fi. All of which are well done, but don't fit the theme that was expected. As for the origin story. It doesn't help the matters much, because it returns you to the fact that this is a haunted house art book that has nothing to do with haunted houses. The story also teases you with interesting senerios that don't pan out. Like the Shoppe owners possible last wish of invisibility. That he would use to meet the herorine. It sounded interesting, but was never done. Lastly, not only is the title of the book misleading, some of the pics titles don't fit either. For instance the one entitled, "Zero G Pillow Fights are the Mosest Fun." In it 3 women are having a pillow fight on a bed, with a window into space behind them. How is that Zero G? Because of this I can't recommend this book. At least not for someone that wants something about Haunted Houses. Maybe if Larson does a 4th volume it will focus more on the things that make up true Haunted Houses.

This first volume of the correspondence of Hunter S. Thompson begins with a high school essay and runs up through the publication of Thompson's breakout book, Hell's Angels. Thompson apparently never threw a letter away, so the reader has the treat of experiencing the full evolution of his pyrotechnic writing style, rant by rant. The letters--to girlfriends, to bill collectors, to placers of "Help Wanted" ads, to editors and publishers--are usually spiced with political commentary. The style and the political animus always seem to drive each other. For instance, an 11/22/63 letter to novelist and friend William J. Kennedy about the day's cataclysm is apparently the birthplace of the signal phrase "fear and loathing." (Thompson summed up the Kennedy assassination thus: "The savage nuts have shattered the great myth of American decency.") And the willingness to write strangers is stunning: this collection includes Thompson's letter to LBJ seeking appointment to the governorship of American Samoa. You might have thought Garry Trudeau was exaggerating in his Doonesbury characterization of the Thompson-based character Duke. He was not.
Book Description
Before there was Gonzo, there was just plain Hunter -- a precocious, earnest, and occasionally troublesome honor student in Louisville, Kentucky.
Before there was Doctor Thompson, there was Airman Thompson -- the military's answer to Grantland Rice, protecting America by covering sports for his Florida base's newspaper.
Before there was
Fear and Loathing, there was Dow Jones -- that is, Thompson's early reportage for that company's
National Observer, which raised the standard for hip and provocative foreign coverage.
Before there was
Rolling Stone, there were job applications everywhere -- in hopes of being hired by a paper, pretty much any paper, an obsession for the starving writer with expensive tastes in alcohol, nicotine, and room service.
In
The Proud Highway, readers will find a Hunter S. Thompson they've imagined but never known. With the publication of these extraordinary letters, written from the time of his high school graduation in 1955 through the triumph of his first book,
Hell's Angels, in 1966, critics and fans can finally trace the development and maturation of a singular talent, one of our era's most important voices. How Thompson changed the face of contemporary nonfiction -- and of America itself -- is the mesmerizing story of
The Proud Highway.

"debt letter".......2007-08-11
i loved this book. i'm pretty new to HST's books having 1st been introduced to his writing thru a friend who gave me a copy of Fear and loathing in las vegas. i didn't know he'd written other works but found that vegas book really funny. i bought a copy of it yrs later. the proud highway is a really interesting look into hunter's life on a daily basis. the "debt letter" on page 114 is hysterical! a great piece of writing. i've framed a copy of it and hung it above my pc. i love reading it.
There's genius and prophecy in this book, it just takes a while to find........2007-07-18
This book, more than anything, collapses under its own weight. I genuinely enjoyed the read, but in retrospect there were too many times when I skipped to the end to see how much longer the book would go. With exhaustive editing it would be a formidable volume, but certain personal and business letters do no benefit to the collection as a whole.
It almost functions as an autobiography... almost. I have a much better understanding of the late Mr. Thompson now, and admire his unhinged style of correspondence, but could have gotten the same point from less letters covering the same period of time. Like any good punk rock band, the shorter the song the better.
The highest points are his moments of prophecy, which I will not ruin for those who plan to read this book. Hunter's ability to identify patterns and apply them to the political arena is astounding, and his observations on such are the best parts of the book.
This is a good read for a patient reader who is rabid about the godfather of gonzo.
Indispensable.......2007-03-17
As a big fan of Mr Thompson for many years, I became very excited when I heard about this volume. And I was not disapointed when I read it. It is as good as any book he himself has ever written. Although not about any subject in particular, the book tells the story of Hunter S Thompson more interestingly than any biography I've ever read anywhere else. It is also far better than his autobiography "Kingdom of Fear".
It obviously covers a lot of ground, but it never gets boring. Mr Thompsons letters, although not written in the same gonzo style of his books, are still very entertaining and very eloquent. They are obviously more candid, but also a lot less burdened by the "image" of Hunter S Thompson than his post-Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail publications (this is especially true for the second volume of letters, "Fear and Loathing in America"). In his letters, he writes as Hunter Thompson the man, not HST the Legend.
You don't have to be a fan of Hunter S Thompson to enjoy this collection of his correspondings from between 1955 and 1967, but you will love it even more if you've read some of his other works. Then again, people wanting to buy this book are most likely to have read his other works as well.
Higest possible recommendation.
Behind the Curtain?.......2006-11-27
Although I enjoy much of Thompson's work and think of him as a necessary part of our country, I can't help but feel he only let us behind a curtain he carefully crafted for us to see.
Ranking among the letters of Neal Cassady and...Keats?.......2006-11-18
The late crusader for the weird, the esteemed Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005), is presented in all of his youthly glory in this very fine collection of his letters written from when he was an eighteen year old young poet sitting in a prison cell while his classmates received their diplomas (I feel almost ashamed that I was able to shout loud with my arms held high, graduating from High School, while the last great writer of American literature never was able to experience such an event when he was young) in 1955 to when he was an outlaw journalist coming into his own, basking in the glory of his recent book, Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.
The wit in the letters, the euphony, the cadence, the rhythm, it's as if they were written by John Keats (1795-1821) himself. This is Thompson's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; its just about as good as the Windblown World, the collection of the journals of Jack Kerouac from '47 - '54.
Hunter S. Thompson, the last great poet we shall ever glorify...

Shearer's 4 star story.......2000-10-09
A book explaining the life of such an incredible player HAD to be interesting, no matter how poorly written, and even if it was in another languege. Luckily, this is very well written and very interesting. And most importantly, its in English. It tells you lots of interesting facts, and tells about his most important achievements, plus some humorous stories. It jumps around a bit, but explains from childhood to just about now, and is well worth reading!

good not great.......2004-02-01
the format of this book is some advice from betty berzon (author) backed up with related examples from her counseling career and her personal ltr. this book touches on different areas of gay life but doesn't seem to nail down any real suggestions for improvement and the book left me feeling unfulfilled. maybe i was expecting too much, i think the problem is that the book isn't very focused. i did pick up some good advice but it took me a while to get through the book.
I didn't waste my money and wasn't misled..........2002-09-21
This is a well-written, informative book. The author is insightful and understanding, at times penetratingly so, often drawing observations from both her personal, extended experience, and from the lives of those she counsels. She has the wisdom of one who has seen many social and cultural shifts over the past decade, and this is well-reflected in her work. No book is a magic bullet; this one inspires, encourages, and lends persective. Lesbian and Gay relationships are often targets of disruption because usually, nobody wants them to succeed; sometimes not even those who are in them. The author does an excellent job of tempering one's vision and supporting the need for building respectful boundaries in a loving, healthy relationship that nurtures and protects both people. I highly recommend this book; it was well-worth my time, attention, and investment.
Don't waste your money........2001-12-28
I rarely write reviews, but I felt misled by the other review available for this book. The review is both well-written and encouraging. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Ms. Berzon's book. It's full of relationship clichés familiar to anyone who has watched daytime TV in the past 15 years, "alcohol can affect your sex life," "self-esteem issues can lead to infidelity." There are a few gay cliches to distinguish this from the trite of the self-help books available for straights, "gay men are less likely to assume that monogamy is an integral part of committed relationship" etc. These are not exact quotes, but they're accurate enough. Read the sample pages available here. The book doesn't get any more insightful. I'm sure we're all intrigued by the possibility that we may only be touching the surface of our relationship potential, but this book isn't going to help you.
Incredibly On Target.......1997-12-29
This book is great! I have read a large number of gay relationship books lately - trying to figure out why my partner of 8 years wanted to all of a sudden break up. We had never had an argument and got along just fine (or so I thought). After reading Ms. Berzon's book, I realized that we were only touching the surface of our relationship potential. Realizing this, finding out why, and what I could do about it has given me hope to save our relationship. Thanks to Ms. Berzon for this insightful and useful book.
Book Description
In the years following the War of 1812, Battle of New Orleans hero General Andrew Jackson became a power unto himself. Having earlier gained national acclaim and a military promotion upon successfully leading the West Tennessee militia in the Creek War of 1813-1814, Jackson furthered his fame in the First Seminole War in 1818, which led to his invasion of Spanish West Florida without presidential or congressional authorization and to the execution of two British subjects. In Old Hickory's War, David and Jeanne Heidler present an iconoclastic interpretation of the political, military, and ethnic complexities of Jackson's involvement in those two historic episodes. Their exciting narrative shows how the general's unpredictable behavior and determination to achieve his goals, combined with a timid administration headed by James Monroe, brought the United States to the brink of an international crisis in 1818 and sparked the longest congressional debate of the period.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome!.......2003-10-27
This easily readable, complete account of the origins of the Southeast United States pulls no punches. It is fascinating. I am an unabashed Andrew Jackson admirer. But how he ever got away with what he did confuses me. Aaron Burr was charged with treason and tried four times for only thinking about what Jackson executed with impunity. Timing, as they say, is everything.
Frontier justice, combined with an officially unsanctioned invasion of indisputably Spanish sovereign territory, is accomplished without so much as a truly serious international whimper. Jackson simply ignored and crushed ALL domestic opposition. This event has all the improbable content of the most outrageous novel: land based buccaneering, genocide, invasion, forced removal, betrayal and, most of all, proof that in the early stages of this part of what was going to become a major cornerstone of the future United States, that certain political sections of early America's hierarchy believed that might made right. Absolutely no democratic ideals here. I have never read anywhere what this book made me feel but I truly believe this was Jackson's first formal execution of his and other's concept of Manifest Destiny.
The authors are excellent. The subject matter is riveting. The local history is fascinating. Jackson is an American original. With all the good he did for his country he had to know that to execute this plan he needed safe harbor in the highest levels of the US government. Thank God he was on our side.
Jackson's Not A Hero to Everyone!.......2003-07-17
The historiographical fortunes of Andrew Jackson have varied over the years from the controversy of his own time to virtual adoration during the New Deal years to today's increasingly jaundiced opinion of the general/politician/Indian fighter.
The Heiders, professional historians, definitely fall into the disapproving faction that lately has been gaining the upper hand. In part, their work is a logical outgrowth of the current political climate. In the 1930s, when Reform was in vogue, Jackson's role as "reformer" (or, destroyer) of such "elitist" institutions as the Second Bank of the United States and his rough nationalism as expressed towards South Carolina during the nullification crisis played well with the generally liberal guild of historians.
But, times have changed and with "multi-culturalism" the current fashion, Andrew Jackson is less a frontier hero in the eyes of many than a frontier sociopath with a brutal contempt for both Indians (now called "Native Americans") and blacks. That, at least, is, in part, how the Heider's seem to regard him.
And, with good reason. Jackson's contempt for the Indians is, despite the apologetics of biographer Robert Remini, too patent to be ignored. His general bloodlust -- he was an extraordinarily violent man in both private and personal life -- don't endear him to modern sensibilities either.
The Heiders, in this well-researched and well-written book, see Jackson as the Loose Cannon of antebellum America: headstrong, insubordinate, genocidal -- and an out and out liar. His prevarications about his unauthorized seizure of Spanish Pensicola in 1818, which included an after-the-fact falsified map, his summary killing of two British nationals on flimsy pretext and his ruthless persecution of anyone who dared to differ with him leave the Old Hero's moral and ethical standing in tatters.
To be sure, the Heiders, when presented with two interpretations of Jackson's actions -- his own and that of his enemies -- generally side with the more hostile account. But, their thorough research builds a persuasive case that Jackson was, indeed, out-of-control, arrogant, and a blood-stained imperialist with abiding racial hatreds.
The Monroe administration found Jackson's actions reprehensible and insubordinate -- but very useful. Thus, the president and his cabinet, led by John Quincy Adams, winked at Old Hickory's depredations. The political popularity of the "Napoeleon of the Woods" made him, as well, too dangerous a potential adversary.
The book goes into considerable detail and some of it may be lost on those not familiar with its period. Still, it is a valuable antidote to two generations of Jackson-worship on the part of historians. One wonders what, a few generations hence, the view of Jackson will be once the cultural wheel has turned over a few more times from now.

Great--the only comprehensive book on the 1st Seminole War........1999-01-27
An often forgotten episode in American history was the United State's pursuit to gain Florida. Troubles on the border allowed Andrew Jackson to come in at remove the Creek and Seminole people. He invaded a foreign territory and executed citizens of a third county while there. His actions were unauthorized (but with the blessings of the President), but he still got away with it.
This is one of the few books that covers the First Seminole War. The authors have done their research and used sources that have been ignored in the past. Many factors went into this conflict, and they are all examined. All the political aspects in Washington City, as well as ramifications from the Fort Jackson Treaty of 1815 that disinherited the Creeks.
The overall impression is that Jackson knew what he wanted and would not let anything get in his way. He pulled off an obviously illegal operation, and got away with it all.

Book Description
Interest in wine science has grown enormously over the last two decades as the health benefits of moderate wine consumption have become firmly established in preventing heart disease, stroke, cancer and dementia. The growth of molecular biology has allowed proper investigation of grapevine identity and lineage and led to improvements in the winemaking process. Wine: A Scientific Exploration delves into the history and appreciation of wine, its early role as a medicine, and modern evidence on how and why wine protects against disease. It also addresses genetic modification of the grapevine, long recognized as a natural process, and the microbes involved in the making of wine. Contents 1. Drinking Wine 2.
