Cowboy Style is filled with warm comforting styles to reflect a casual sophistication. Intricately designed armoires and Tiffany lamps are as welcome as the more organic designs made from ponderosa pine.
Wood furniture shimmers in the glow of fireplaces and creative chandeliers in rooms layered in comfort. Intricately designed carpets and designer bookcases make the spaces inviting.
A magical artist's studio built in Wyoming showcases a cut-metal lamp by a California craftsman, Tony Alvis. His fireplace screens are of especially high interest in this book because they are scenes of cowboys overlooking deserts and the interplay of the light behind the silhouettes makes for a fascinating magical experience.
Other interesting features include the details about sheep wagons used by sheepherders in remote mountains, cozy cabins and stories about the artists featured throughout this book.

Beautiful Book!.......2003-04-22
I needed pictures to help me figure out how to design a Country Western style art gallery. This book had beautiful pictures, gives an overview of the history of the western culture, and provides names of companies and/or creators of furniture pieces. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the Rustic/Country Western style home; this book was absolutely wonderful!

I enjoyed the book, but I was a bit disappointed, since there wasn't enough technical decorating information on color schemes, regional variations in styles, etc.

Heal the Jewelry.......2007-01-10
He teaches you in plain easy to understand language. He gives lots of tips to help you. He gives good illustrations to help you. And he explains things well. I'm glad to have bought this book.
Another Dover reprint that is a good idea.......2006-04-12
This is abother one of those times classics that has been updated. With the newer information. I have a 1st Edition this vesion has 130 pages added checking the index with updated info.This is not for the Beader,Newbie or Wire Twister. It will not add much to their enjoyment of their chosen field. If they are looking to expand their knowledge of the metalsmithing field this would be a low cost way to cover a lot of ground for a small price and might find themselves with a ready reference. I own the first edition I use it and will be looking for the dover reprint.

An Excellent First Book On The Subject!.......2002-09-09
I wanted to understand the basics of what goes into
jewelry repair and creation. Can I resize my own
rings? Can I set my own stones? What simple
maintenance can I do instead of having to pay
big bucks to a professional, it just can't be
that hard!
This book proved me right. It's a wonderful
reference and text. It's not too much, it's not
too little, it's not too technical. Jewelers
tools are shown and explained. If you want
to build a jewelry repair set up in your home
this will show you how to make one that's just
right for you.
Someone said it's "dated", which I would rephrase
by saying it's a good, time tested and true basic
source of reliable up to date information. The
tricks they use out there and charge top dollar
for amazed me. I'm a smarter shopper now too.
If you want one book on the subject, this really
is a great choice.

Chris Verene should be very pleased with this. The book is beautiful, with bold reproductions of his work, and the usual high standard of production by Twin Palms. The photographs are mostly poignant slices of the artist's life, full of resonance and truth, reinforced by Verene's fierce commitment and loyalty to his family and community. When so many photographers feel the need to strive for (detrimental) effects, and the method is the message, Verene keeps it simple, and lets the complexity flow from the images and captions. Not necessarily ground breaking work, this is, nonetheless, an important book, sure to become one of my favorites.

When I bought this book---my heart stopped. Chris Verene has captured the familiar feeling you get when you revisit an old town from your past. His pictures contain so much emotion--I am speechless. I hope he continues to take pictures and put out books. As an aspiring photographer, I truly look up to this man.

I just really like Buckley and have ever since I saw him on one of those 60-minute type programs back in the early '90s. This book provides some interesting information about him from interviews with friends and family, etc. In general, it is quite poorly written and a little boring, relying entirely on the subject's inherently interesting life rather than on the author's skill. Buckley fans will enjoy. Biography fans will yawn.

Great book; very objective, almost a love feast of fascinating Buckley quotes, but also very critical. I recommend Mr. Judis' biography of William F. Buckley, Jr. as a great way to understand the course of American conservatism in the last century, going strong into this one.

I have owned the Brightwork book for many years and always find myself checking back with it when I do a project. I bought this book as an update for the original but have found it invaluable as an adjunct to the original text. This is the perfect reference to have aboard or in the shop with you while you are doing the project. It effectivly updates the original text in a couple of critical areas and I highly recommend it. Thanks to these two books, no one need fear varnishing again! It is gospel!

When Marvin Kalb was a CBS News correspondent in 1963, he had an opportunity to cover a presidential scandal. President John F. Kennedy was staying at a hotel in New York City when Kalb accidentally stepped into a private elevator and was thrown to the ground by a secret service agent. "I looked up just long enough to see the back of a woman with stunningly attractive legs entering the elevator," he recalls. She was on her way for a rendezvous with JFK. It was the scoop of a lifetime, except for one thing: Kalb didn't report it. "As I write about this incident more than thirty-seven years later, I am amazed not by my decision to do nothing but by the fact, quite undeniable, that never for one moment did I even consider pursuing and reporting what I had seen," he reflects.
That was another era, of course, and quite different from the one Bill Clinton found himself in at the start of the Monica Lewinsky ordeal. How that scandal went public--and the media's role in making it happen--is Kalb's controversial subject. "I decided to focus tightly on thirteen days of Washington coverage: the eight days leading up to the breaking of the story, the day it broke, and the next four days, when journalists focused on the scandal as if nothing else in the world mattered," he writes. The result was "journalism run amok." In One Scandalous Story, Kalb treats the whole episode with open scorn: "It took only a few days in January 1998 for journalists to realize that they were in uncharted waters. Faced by a scandalous story involving a president and an intern, a competitive twenty-four-hours-a-day news cycle, and a coldly demanding economic imperative, many found themselves violating just about every rule in the book." Kalb offers a detailed chronicle of how the scandal unfolded in the press, filling his tale with a cast of familiar characters, such as Newsweek reporter Michael Isikoff (accused of an "unhealthy collaboration" with his sources) and Internet impresario Matt Drudge ("the young man with the Walter Winchell fedora, the cocked eyebrow, and the unshaven chin"). One great storyteller.......2003-05-11
The first thing to understand about ONE SCANDALOUS STORY is that it is itself a story. Marvin Kalb is an excellent storyteller. A seasoned journalist and professor, Kalb is expert in taking information and presenting it in an interesting and compelling way. He succeeds in doing that here, which is no small accomplishment as, at first blush, there's not much more to be said about the Clinton-Lewinsky story. Beyond the way her writes, Kalb does add a new, or at least neglected wrinkle, which is the scandal of how the story was covered.
Kalb's dissection of journalism's treatment of the unfolding drama in its earliest days is what this book is really about. Kalb explains early on that he was looking for a subject to use as the centerpiece of a discussion about a number of observations he's made over his career about the impact of the press on public policy, how television affects politics and related topics. As the name of the book implies, the developments over the past 30 years, culminating in the Clinton-Lewinsky story, are not good.
Kalb's account explains how coverage of the Clinton-Lewinsky story drove the sequence of events. He demonstrates how poor sources, reporting of rumor, and saturation coverage magnified the significance of what was actually happening. Kalb does not justify Bill Clinton's bad behavior, but he makes the point that coverage of that behavior was all out of proportion to what else was going on in the world - and how that coverage wasn't very good anyway. (An interesting "other" development was the US-Iraq showdown of 1998. The thought occurred to me that the Clinton-Lewinsky story could have derailed the American public's preparedness for a larger confrontation - sort of a reverse `wag the dog' phenomena.)
Kalb is at his very best when he picks apart specific reports and bring a magnifying glass to the transcript of actual stories covering the Clinton-Lewinsky tale. My only criticism of this book is that there isn't enough of that. Where ONE SCANDALOUS STORY replays what happened between Clinton, Lewinsky, Ken Starr, etc. it takes away from its exploration of how the story was actually covered.
I also don't think that the end of ONE SCANDALOUS STORY is the end of the story. If coverage of Clinton-Lewinsky represented the culmination of the press's degeneration, it also hastened the subsequent further decline. Coverage of the 2000 election results, if anything, one-upped Clinton-Lewinsky in terms of bad journalism, and in a different but important way, coverage of the 2003 invasion of Iraq represented the complete meltdown of the kinds of journalistic standards Kalb is so concerned with.
Hopefully, Kalb is thinking along the same lines and another book is forthcoming. His point is too important to be made once.
doc in Louisiana.......2002-09-16
Well, Marvin baby tries to do a good job. Unfortunately somewhere he lost his way. I simply did not understand the point he was trying to make. In one way I thought it was a "mea culpa" for Clinton, and in another way it was in regards to how trashy news reporting has become. Maybe it was both, but definitely trying to make heads or tails of this book is challenging. That he started with his episode with Kennedy didn't help his thesis one bit. He mixed apples and oranges and ended up with kiwis -- and I'm not sure yet if they are fruit or vegetable. That's the way I feel about this book too.
Another attempt to rationalize Clinton's scandals.......2002-01-01
This is another attempt, like many others, to rationalize Clinton's scandals. Clinton fan? Buy the book. Otherwise ignore it.
Summary: The Nasty Press Forced Clinton to Commit Perjury.......2001-12-19
If you want objectivity, buy some other book. If you love the ex-president and still think he is a hero you will love this long-winded apology for his most notable acts in office. In 1963 Mr. Kalb should have reported about his abuse at the hands of the Secret Service as well as the reason they took such measures - to cover up JFK's affair. Apparently Kalb's silence bought him continued access to JFK's White House - a compromising journalistic tactic which he laments in this book.
Interesting study.......2001-10-23
Marvin Kalb has written a book looking at the coverage of the first weeks of Monicagate. It is not a "tell all" book. He doesn't expose all the deals cut between various news organizations and the Office of Independent Council. But what he reveals is disturbing enough.
I suspect when future historians look back at Monicagate they will be writing quite a different story from what has been written so far. The real story has to be written by people who don't have an investment in it. Unfortunately the entire Washington Media Elite is so invested in this story that I don't trust any of them to write an objective account of it. They can't tell all without revealing their own complicity in it which is why Michael Isikoff's book was so disappointing. He had gone out of his way to erase his own fingerprints.
Kalb's book is disappointing in one regard. He doesn't examine the implications of what happens when the press trades access for silence. The press kept quiet about Starr's collusion with Jones lawyers for fear he would cut off leaks. Unfortunately this kind of quid pro quo happens every day across the country. Reporter keep quiet about prosecutorial abuse in exchange for illegal leaks from prosecutors, Police, the FBI. Any discussion of this is treated as taboo by the press.
Kalb also doesn't discuss the Grand Jury laws broken by Starr's office in the name of "the rule of law". But in fairness that is an altogether different book.
Overall Kalb's book is helpful in understanding the hysteria that gripped the press in 1998.

Every parent and counselor should read this book.......2004-07-29
This issues presented in this book -- feelings of isolation, anger and confusion among teens that too often result in suicides or attempted suicides -- are of the utmost importance in being able to effectively deal with teen depression, violence and suicide. Parents and counselors will find the statistics and anecdotes eye-opening. I only have a couple of quibbles: I wish the book had taken one chapter to talk about specific things individuals could do to combat teen suicide. Also, there were a few spelling and grammar errors.

I purchased this book before my 'mini-tour' of Gettysburg, Antietam, Chancerlorsville, and Appotmattox last fall - Awesome!!! SO many detailed directions to sites we would NEVER have know existed. If you plan on visiting any major Civil War Battlefield I highly recomend the book!

I RECENTLY READED: THE STAR CREEK PAPERS AND WAS NOT SURPRISE OF THINGS THAT WENT ON BACK IN THE DAY, FROM READING HISTORY, I'M 47 YEARS YOUNG AND ALSO THE GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER OF ISOM WILSON, MY FATHER MOTHER WAS OPHELIA WILSON, ONE OF ISOM DAUGHTER, I STAY WITH HER FAR ABOUT TEN YEARS AND SHE WAS A STRONG BLACK WOMAN, THAT I LOVED AND I WISH THAT SHE WAS STILL HERE IN MY LIFE, I OFTEN WONDER OF HER. BUT WHO GIVE PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO DO SUCH THINGS TO OTHERS, THERE IS ONLY ONE MAN THAT JUDGES ONES PATH.I RATE THIS BOOK A 10 AND SHOULD BE IN SCHOOLS ACROSS THE USA, BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE HATE START.
