Bella!.......2002-06-16
Lots of beautiful photography (by Andrea Brizzi) for anyone who dreams of Cuba and would like to feel the cobblestones of Old Havana underfoot, taste the mojitos in the lobby bar of the Hotel Nacional, hear the strains of the mariachi band at sunset, and learn about the history of our most enigmatic, so-close-yet-so-far neighbor through it's architecture and the very readable text by Rachel Carley.
Fantastic, a work of art.......1997-11-02
One of the best pictorial books on Cuba that has ever been published. It's the realization of profesionals and very objective, a very difficult achievement considering Cuba. Highly recommended to those willing to discover the real Cuba.

Customer Reviews:
disappointing & mediocre.......2003-03-10
I found this book very disappointing. It's more a showcase for not very good painters than a useful source of information on composition techniques. I did not recognize any of the names from the fine work I've seen in the International Artist's magazine but rather ordinary & mediocre examples. Explanations were wordy & dogmatic rather than visually instructive. The material is not organized in any formal manner for a subject such as this...Generally disappointing in every respect.
Design Tips from Canada.......2001-10-18
This book has an interesting approach to teaching design and composition. Each artist wrote an essay explaining their approach to creating dynamic paintings. My only wish is that the book offered insights from artists around the world rather than focusing exclusively on Canadians.
Most of the paintings are in a realist style although some begin to approach a bit more non-representational styles. The quality of the essays also seemed to vary. Some essays I found very helpful, for example, one gave a tip list of points to keep in mind while composing a painting. Another gave a tip of making a cutout of your subject in different sizes and then seeing which size and placement worked the best. Yet another gave a Rule of 360 tip - i.e. keep turning the composition because you might find alternative compositions more interesting than the one you're working on currently. It might even spawn several new painting ideas to follow up on.
For me personally, the less helpful essays were more rambling musings by the artist on their spiritual thoughts on composition. While I understand some artists may find these type of essays enjoyable or helpful I find it hard to translate such spiritual musings into actual practices I can use to improve my own work. Fortunately, most of the essays had plenty of interesting tips and practical approaches and exercises I've never thought of that I will be using now. Overall the quality of the book is very high. It definitely shows the same high quality as the magazine affiliated with it. Get this book and discover all kinds of fascinating exercises and tips to improve your artwork.
A wondeful book!.......2001-08-13
If you only ever get one book on composition it has to be this one! Composition is such an important tool for any artist; it can make or break a painting. Regardless of what style of painting you do, good composition and design is the foundation of a successful painting. And yet this is a subject that doesn't get taught in art schools and books on the subject are few and far between and often very dry and technical.
Design and Composition Secrets really does change all that. It's a fascinating read, fabulously illustrated throughout and full of great tips and techniques. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to learn more about composition. It has really improved my painting and has given me so many ideas. It's the kind of book you'll be using for years.
It takes 16 different artists, with very different styles and allows each of them a chapter to explain their own approach to composition, using plenty of examples of their work and finishing with a gallery of the artists paintings complete with a compositional analysis.
The result is a set of essays that come at the subject from many different angles. Donna Baspaly's fabulous layered multi media paintings demonstrate her philosophical approach, her emphasis on structure, shape and the use of checklists to keep on track during painting. Robert Bateman loves abstract qualities and shares his cut out composition tactic along with his stunning wildlife paintings. Don Farrell looks for rhythm and harmony, shape relationships and connections and divisions. Tom Huntley shares his 5 point plan and his wonderful sense of colour and Myfanwy Pavelic never consciously thinks about design or composition at all, her approach is based on intuition.
Along the way they cover a wealth of information that you'd expect from a book like this, shape, colour, texture, pattern, values, geometry, the golden section, rhythm, balance, negative space and the like. But they also cover some more surprising topics like the child within, intuitive painting, left brain and right brain painting, using a projector, choreographing movement and designing for a strong emotional response. It's full of surprises and fresh ideas.
This book is not just a wonderful resource on composition, which you'll want to come back to again and again, but also an incredible insight into how 16 very different artists work. I absolutely love it!
design variations.......2001-06-12
This book certainly lives up to it title in providing many different perspectives when looking at design and composition. Perhaps a prior knowledge of design and composition would be an advantage in order to understand some of the interpretations when some artists refer to "rightness", their intuition and their sense of rhythm and harmony. The book is full of colourful paintings, pencil sketches showing line, shape and values. There is certainly plenty of variety, both in the style of painting and the method for the composition and design. There do not seem to be many books on the market in this area and I am sure this book will provide plenty of ideas and perhaps a new way of looking at problems in this area. I have just one grumble and that is so many art books are 127/128 pages long and it is always great when you come across books that have been exceedingly generous with number of pages but this book is the usual 127 pages long.
Book Description
Central European Avant-Gardes presents the first interpretive overview of the complex webs of interaction among the artists and intellectuals of early twentieth-century Central Europe. The key stylistic transformation of the period was from Expressionism to Constructivism, as artists and writers, against a volatile background of war and revolution, saw the opportunity literally to construct a new world through their work. The borders between the visual arts, photography, film, architecture, poetry, and typography were obliterated, as artists sought to transcend the forces of traditionalism to forge an elemental visual language that would overcome national and linguistic boundaries. Yet at the same time that these artists advocated pluralism and unity, their work engaged issues such as nationalism and tradition that still resonate in artistic circles today.
The book, which accompanies a major exhibition organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and curated by Timothy Benson, assisted by Monika Krol, is arranged around events and situations rather than by linear, art historical categories. It features hundreds of color plates and reproductions of documents; discussions of movements from Artificialism to Zenitism; essays on figures, publications, and exhibitions; and shorter "city views" of Belgrade, Berlin, Bucharest, Budapest, Cracow, Dessau, Ljubljana, £ódz, Poznañ, Prague, Vienna, Warsaw, Weimar, and Zagreb.
Customer Reviews:
Central European Avant-Gardes.......2002-06-15
A handsome catalogue of the exhibition that Benson, head of the Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies, curated at LACMA, and sent on to Munich and Berlin. The design of the bookÑby Scott Taylor with Katherine GoÑperfectly captures the impassioned experimentation that occurred in cities all over central Europe before it was snuffed out by political reactionaries who hated free-thinking artists. A few familiar namesÑBrancusi, Moholy-Nagy, and El LissitskyÑflit through these pages, but most are as little-known as their movements. All were, to some degree, revolutionaries and even participated in street battles in Berlin and Budapest in the chaotic aftermath of the first World War. The world changed around them, and itÕs fascinating to discover, so long after that vanished era, how well they expressed the progressive spirit of the age. Book Description
In his first new book of comics since the Pulitzer-Prize winning Maus, Art Spiegelman gives us a deeply personal, politically charged, graphically and emotionally stunning account of the events and aftermath of September 11, 2001. In a large, two-page-spread format that echoes the scale of the earliest newspaper comics, Spiegelman conveys--through his singular artistry, his outrage and wit--the unfathomable enormity of the event itself, the obvious and insidious effects it had on his life, and the extraordinary, often hidden changes that have been enacted in the name of post-9/11 national security and that have begun to undermine the very foundation of American democracy.

Award-winning biography of 19th adventure Isabella Bird who visited Colorado, Hawaii and Australia, and gallivanted around Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Tibet writing best-selling books about her travels.
Customer Reviews:
Great book - so much to admire in this woman!.......2000-04-11
I loved this book. What a character! Not only did she travel the world, but she did it with her own money and under her own leadership. Admittedly, she hired lots of support (whole entourages in some cases) but nevertheless, the journies were hers and hers alone. I've done alot of traveling as a single woman, and even these days it takes some courage and self-reliance. I have much admiration for Isabella Bird, who went to all these far-flung places before there were all the modern conveniences and attitudes. Phenomenal woman!

Customer Reviews:
One of my all-time favorite parenting books!.......2006-08-03
With a title like this, a Mormon family of nine kids, and their being the authors of "Teaching Your Child Values," you might think this would be a "sappy" book. It isn't! By "sensitivity" they don't mean "overly sensitive." They mean developing social skills that allow a person to be able to focus on others, and be LESS self-centered. Their approach is incredibly smart, practical and on-target. Their suggested activities have been tested with their own large family, and are fun and effective.
I've made a lifelong project out of developing social skills, since I grew up somewhat lacking in them. Through exhaustive research and experimentation, I finally found some authors and approaches that I feel really work (see Constructive Living and other books by David K. Reynolds, and the todoinstitute.org and books by Gregg Krech). The Eyres' approach dovetails very well with these other philosophies and complements them, but it is more activity based and family friendly.
The book is arranged to be worked through over nine months. Each month has a focus, with thought-provoking quotations, suggested activities for parents and children, and a "family focus" which is intended to start a new tradition in your family. The Eyres suggest that parents first try to learn and practice the skills, and then share what they're doing with their kids.
The skills build on each other. They start with skills of Observing (Seeing, Listening), then skills of Feeling (Congruence, Concern, Empathy), next Communicating (Expressing what we see, Communicating what we feel), and finally Doing (Service, Anonymous service).
The Eyres give the best exposition on the importance of "feelings" that I've ever read; including that great art is essentially a communication of feeling. It's especially powerful, coming from a no-nonsense business consultant (Richard Eyre). In general, what I think gives the Eyres' approach such genius and well-roundedness is that they marry disparate elements in so many ways. To begin with, Richard the business consultant is married to Linda, the musician. They combine a business type "parenting with goals and a plan" focus with an emphasis on the arts, both of which are so vitally important.
Second, as one of America's leading proponents of values parenting, and as a religious family (though they definitely do not proselytize in their books), you might think they would be "goody-goody." But they are not. Their books are very honest, and their family is "normal" in the sense of having the same problems and concerns that we all do.
Third, they emphasize responsibility, and their kids are refreshingly non-indulged. At the same time they promote nurturing, communicating one's love to one's children and loyalty to family in very specific and creative ways (see their wonderful "The Book of Nurturing"). Throughout all their books, their immense love for their children comes through in such an inspiring and poetic manner that I've often quoted them on this topic.
As for the book's activities, many are games (that involve family discussion), some involve writing (poetry, journaling) or public speaking (within the family), some are awards, and there is a monthly prequiz and postquiz. As a parent and teacher, I have found that these types of activities are fun and motivating to kids, and valuable to their cognitive as well as emotional development.
The book is interspersed with interesting stories from the Eyres' own lives with their kids, some of which took place in other countries they've lived on traveled in. There are also stories from people that have written to them, plus fables that illustrate their points.
In conclusion, this book has taught ME more about social skills than any of the other considerable number of books on the subject I've read. I would give it a top rating even if I were not a parent! I only wish I would have read it earlier. In "Teaching Your Child Values," they suggested that "sensitivity" is related to the teenage years, so I put off reading it. This book applies to parents and kids of ALL ages, and the Eyres' books may be read in any order (they are all fantastic!)
I wish that the Eyres would republish this book with a new title: something like "Teaching Your Child Extracenteredness" or "Teaching Your Child Unselfishness." Parents are desperate over their children's selfishness, and I think a new title might bring this fantastic book the recognition it deserves.
Book Description
The Remarkable Story of a True Hero of American AviationThe U.S. Navy's Blue Angels are the most famous flight demonstration team in the world. While millions of aviation enthusiasts see their shows every year, the story of the man who formed the squadron has never been told. He is Roy Marlin "Butch" Voris, a World War II Ace and one of only two aviators ever to command the Blue Angels twice.First Blue details the epic journey of an unassuming man whose strong character and desire to fly launched him into a life of drama, heroism, and accomplishment unique in his field. Because he wanted to serve his country during World War II, a young Butch Voris found himself flying fighter planes as part of the pitifully prepared and outmanned front in the early stages of the Pacific theater. He was nearly killed there but went on to be a leader in one of the most fearsome naval air squadrons in the Pacific. As a pilot, Butch is unquestionably in the same class as more recognized aviator heroes such as Chuck Yeager and Pappy Boyington. While his World War II experience alone could comprise a book, Butch may be best known for his efforts in the creation of the naval air demonstration team, the Blue Angels. After the war, Voris was personally chosen by Admiral Nimitz to start the Blue Angels and to lead them, first in prop planes and later in jets. The story of his efforts is as exciting as it is inspirational, and it's told here in meticulous detail and with great humor. Today the Blue Angels still follow traditions established by Butch. Butch's involvement in military flight didn't end with the Blue Angels; he became a major player in the development of the F-14 Tomcat and NASA's Lunar Explorer Module for Grumman. Butch dedicated his life to his work, and here, finally, is the remarkable, untold account of this true American aviation pioneer and hero: a man whose life had unparalleled influence on naval aviation and whose legacy continues to inspire millions of Americans each year.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent history of the early Blue Angels.......2007-02-05
The book is well written and the author has done an excellent job of describing the man and his work.
Two books about one man........2006-10-19
You could easily divide this one into two halfs. The first half is Butch's WWII Naval air combat exploits in the Pacific Theatre. The second half skips a beat then covers the Blue Angels and his Naval career after the war.
The WWII stuff is a great read. I'd give that half 5 stars. Lots of first hand accounts dealing with famous and not so famous battles.
The second half, and ostensibly the reason for writing the book, deals with Butch's role in forming the Navy Blue Angels, and his post war career. This half, while interesting enough, bogs down and does a pretty good impression of a tail dragger from time to time. I got the feeling the author struggled with this half of the book, I did.
At times there is plenty of action and excitement in mid-air collisions, falal crashes, near death near crashes, etc. The rest of the time the author is fighting to move the story along. He tries to make the day to day job as thrilling as the flying. It's a decent effort, but not entirely sucessful.
This half has more than it's share of filler... speculation based on newspaper clipings of air shows (like those were ever accurate to begin with)... Endless accounts of what a great guy Butch was... it gets old after a while.
The first half I read in two days. The second half took me a week.
I have to say one thing that's fairly important. The author is up front about speculation. You won't have much doubt about the veracity of the rest of it. In that regard it's excellent.
Call it a four star book on a five star subject.
First Blue.......2005-09-17
As a pilot and Navy vet.I enjoyed reading this book,
it was well done.Had a friend from our Essex days who
became a plane capt.on blue 4 and thus i was able to meet
some of the boys back in 1960.Buch Voris spent time at
North Island San Diego as i did for some 2 1/2 years.
The book brings back some fine memories.

"Take charge. Go do it.".......2005-02-02
First Blue is a sterling biography of one of the best known and most admired Naval aviators of the 20th century--Butch Voris, who not only started the Blue Angels after WW II, but restarted them after the interruption of the Korean War. In detailing Butch's career from his aerial combat in the Pacific to his service with NASA and the space program, Wilcox shows us a man of unflagging courage, devotion to his craft and his country, and constant pursuit of perfection in the performance of his duties.
In incident after incident, Butch's character emerges dramatically--the character accurately understated in a 1943 fitness report by his first skipper, Jimmy Flatley: "He has a very strong personality." His perfectionism saved the lives of his flying teammates, as well as his own life, many times over. The hair-raising air show disaster Wilcox opens the book with is only the first of a series of near-death experiences for Butch. As zealous in implementing good ideas of others as in pursuing his own innovations, he improved on almost every aspect of Navy practices and procedures he came in contact with, including the squadron-basing system for the Pacific fleet and methods of choosing and developing the best aircraft for the Navy's needs.
Wilcox is especially informative on the politics that cause turkeys like the F7U Cutlass to be purchased by the Defense Department--but rejected by Butch for the Blue Angels. And he reveals how Butch's detective work was instrumental in exposing the dishonesty in General Dynamics' development of the F111B fighter, crediting Butch with "raising the F-14 [Tomcat] from the F111B's ashes." A vivid encounter with Defense Secretary Robert McNamara helps us understand how a brilliant business leader can disastrously mislead the government and the armed forces.
Honesty and loyalty were rarely, if ever, in conflict for Butch. He repeatedly risked his reputation and career for the sake of both. Wilcox often reveals Butch's motivations through his own words: "Every time you are put to a test and survive, you learn something more. I think it was just my nature. Take charge. Go do it. I'm a great believer in that. It's my basic instinct."
First Blue is as informative on the technicalities of flying a hot fighter plane as it is on military-industrial politics. Wilcox's description of the difficulty of landing a prop-driven fighter on a pitching aircraft carrier deck is the best I've read, and for an encore he vividly shows us how doing it in a jet fighter is even trickier.
Wilcox also includes countless nuggets like how Butch got his name, how he had an unexpected chat with Winston Churchill after the war, and how he saved the fledgling Tailhook Association from the risks of south-of-the-border partying.
Butch Voris will forever be inseparable from the Blue Angels, the foremost precision flight team in the world, but this book shows convincingly that his contributions to America's superiority in the air and in space were far more numerous than that. The honors showered on him for these achievements make your head spin, leaving you unprepared for the revelation of the weaknesses in the Navy's promotion system that allow it to lose a superb officer like Butch.
Interesting Time, Interesting Person.......2004-10-27
In March of 1941, Butch Voris joined the Navy as a pilot trainee. This was a time of peace. But before his training ended, it was no longer peace time. The country and soon Butch Voris was at war. The planes they flew were Wildcats, not exactly the best machines to use up against Zeros. Not to many of the early fliers survived the war, but in spite of a number of close calls Butch did.
After the war Butch was personally selected by Admiral Nimitz to set up a demonstration team to attract people to join the Navy. He did, it was called the Blue Angels. Before too long, another little situation came up called Korea. After that Butch went back to the Blue Angels, the only person ever to command it twice. Butch Voris eventually left the navy and went ot work for Grumman, being involved in the development of the F-14.
The book is well written, and covers an interesting period of an interesting person's life.

Book Description
The authors find that in the long term, an air-launched military TAV would be more cost effective than a small expendable launch vehicle such as Pegasus.
Customer Reviews:
Blistering.......2002-02-03
Whenever a discussion of economics in the modern space age arises, I recommend this book. I think it is really the seminal work on this topic, and that not enough people have read it.
What I like best is how completely the costs of extremely high flight are quantified. The Pegasus comes off looking very bad, and rightly so, I think.
You should read this book. Maybe twice.
