5 out of 5 stars Great Design Book!.......2007-02-12

I waited an extremely long time for this book to be delivered. I have to say that is was worth the wait. This gives a great look at at great designer from a perspective of someone who probably knew him better than anyone. The photos are great and his designs are still very relevant today (probably more than ever). I recommend this book to any fan of Hicks or a fan of high end 70's modern design.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon does not ship this book with the dust jacket - Do not order from Amazon if it is a gift.......2006-12-13

Amazon needs to get their act together. This book is great - but I would order it somewhere else. I ordered these books to give as holiday gifts and they came without the dust covers. I had to go ahead and give them anyway, but Amazon can't seem to locate any covers for them. They shipped 3 more books to me but they didn't have covers either. It has just been impossible to get in touch with anyone there that can help and I can't seem to talk to anyone other than a phone operator in India to help with the issue.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!.......2006-07-03

Ashley Hicks has created a lasting memorial to his talented father, David Hicks. The book is stunning. The writing is fresh and enjoyable. Much, much more than a "David Hicks on..." title--more like a family scrapbook done to the highest level!

1 out of 5 stars This isn't a review of the book, but amazon's POOR shipping.......2005-09-13

I have eagerly anticipated receiving my copy of David Hicks: Designer. I ordered it back in May of this year (2005) and I was told that it "usually ships in 2 to 3 weeks". Well, here it is September 2005 and STILL haven't received my copy and I doubt I ever will.

What I have received are endless emails stating that they have run into an unforeseen and unavoidable delay in obtaining my book and ask that I approve the additional delay. The most unbelievable part is that it's STILL listed as "shipping in 2 to 3 weeks" on the site!

I've contacted them on about three occasions complaining about the delays. Every time they respond, it's extremely scripted...they don't even seem to realize how long I've waited for the book, instead treating me as if I just recently placed the order. In the time that I originally ordered the book and now, I've accumulated a $5 coupon, free One-day shipping and the upgrade of having my items shipped when they become available--this is useless b/c the other 2 items I ordered months ago have already been received.

I recently got the idea of writing a review on amazon's poor shipping after seeing 2 similar reviews for the book "Tom Ford"... seems like I'm not the only one who is frustrated and fooled by amazon. I wonder if the folks who paid $80 to become "Amazon Prime" members have to put up with such poor service.

    Book Description

The next volume in Masamune Shirow's best-selling art book series is orbiting cyberspace and preparing to touch down onto bookstore shelves in late Summer. This volume concentrates primarily on Shirow's character, robot and vehicle designs for interactive games. Shirow is world famous for being equally skilled and creative in the realms of computer-generated graphics and traditional drawing and painting. It is logical then that his unique and imaginative studies are among the most interesting being done in the high-tech game field. With commentary in both English and Japanese, this new collection provides a fascinating insight into the creative process of one of Japan's premiere talents.

3 out of 5 stars Not as impressive as other "Intron Depot" Titles.......2007-09-30

Ever since I first laid eyes on Shirow's virtuoso work in the original "Ghost in the Shell," I've enjoyed his singular style and hi outright mastery of digital art. As a result, I've been purchasing his Intron Depot books, which serve as great collections of his art. I've been pleased by the series overall, but in Intron Depot 4: Bullets, I've been a little disappointed. This book is largely composed of conceptual designs he did for video games, and there is little if any comic book/cover work, which made the other volumes so splendid. While Shirow's artistry in this book cannot be detracted, I just wasn't as impressed with the work in this volume - it wasn't what I was expecting, certainly. ID #s 1-3 are your best bet. I hope a 5th volume comes out soon...

    2 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2005-03-10

    I love masamune shirow!

    I loved intron depot 1-3!

This one is just not up to par, mostly character sketches and tiny headshots of characters. Get this only if you're a die hard shirow fan. Everybody else save your cash and wait for "Exon Depot".

    3 out of 5 stars Slightly disapointing.......2005-01-23

Intron Depot was highly entertaining. The follow up vol. 2 Blades, and vol. 3 Ballistic were progressively better in volume of color works, novelty, and plenty of eye-candy.

Which is why I had no hesitation when purchasing ID4: Bullets - expecting heavy developmental and promotional art from his game genre. Which was not the case.

In my opinion, comparing vol.4 to the previous IDs, Bullets has about 1/3 the amount of quality imagery such as finished character art and dynamic fully rendered images. The other parts are mostly nominal concept detail/art and light weight 3d models associated with some of the titles he worked on.

I say if I were a fan of the games featuring his art, I would enjoy this book a lot more. It seems to fall short in the amount of complete renderings.

        Book Description

Since 1996, photographer Kenneally has documented the families in her Brooklyn neighborhood, witnessing their struggles with poverty, social institutions, and drugs. Her poignant, psychological photographs span generations, tracing everyday people and narrating their tales of hope and despair. She chronicles pregnancies and births, institutions and streets, and shows a community of inner-city families both full of life and still institutionalized by the welfare system. Her work is fully present, alive to the moment, realistic. Her images draw us to experience the depths and complexities of family life in the American social and justice systems, and the nearly total abandonment of the poor.

                  Book Description

"Reefer Charlie" Fox rode the rails from 1928 to 1939; from 1939 to 1965 he hitched rides in automobiles and traveled by foot. From Indiana to British Columbia, from Arkansas to Texas, from Utah to Mexico, he was part of the grand hobo tradition that has all but passed away from American life.

He camped in hobo jungles, slept under bridges and in sand houses at railroad yards, ate rattlesnake meat, fresh California grapes, and fish speared by the Indians of the Northwest. He quickly learned both the beauty and the dangers of his chosen way of life. One lesson learned early on was that there are distinct differences among hoboes, tramps, and bums. As the all-time king of hoboes, Jeff Davis, used to say, "Hoboes will work, tramps won't, and bums can't."

Tales of an American Hobo is a lasting legacy to conventional society, teaching about a bygone era of American history and a rare breed of humanity who chose to live by the rails and on the road.

4 out of 5 stars Tales of An American Hobo review.......2001-01-10

Tales of an American Hobo was a collection of short stories about the life of a Hobo. This book taught me a lot of lessons in life one being, "Treat everyone with the respect that you would liked to be treated with." The hobo in this book was always disrespected and discriminated against in his life. The cops in the towns that he traveled to would tell him to leave and never come back. They didn't even give him a chance to start over and get his life going. He meet some nice people on his journey. He was as kind as possible to them and never took more than he would need to survive. There were the other people who tricked him into thinking that they where nice and gave him water that was bad and made him sick.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Window Into A Unique & Lost Culture.......2002-07-15

I was raised in a Pullman train car on the ground next to the Southern Pacific railroad in Southern Oregon so I saw many hobos, bums, and tramps over the years. I spoke with them from time-to-time and "Steam Train" Maury Graham's book was right on. My dad ,who worked for the railroad, was also against giving anything to the people who would knock on the door for fear that it would encourage others. But during the day if one came to the door my mom would fix them one or two cheese sandwiches. I still recall how she said one time she watched him as he walked back to the train and finished the sandwiches as he walked so he wouldn't have to share with the others in the train. The railroad yard in my community was too small for a "Bull" so when they were spotted by the railroad workers they just told them to stay out of sight and catch the next train on-ward. This book is filled with information about a culture that has nearly disappeared. It's told in an entertaining and easy to read form. It just shows you the vast difference between the hobos of the past and the bums with signing saying that they are "Vietnam Vets looking for work" who populate many interchange corners in Texas and work the same locations for year-after-year. "Tales of the Iron Road" shares with you some of the most famous hobos of the past, poems, tricks of the "trade", recipes, and more. If you're interested in this side of railroading you'll enjoy it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyed reading tales of the iron road.......2002-01-08

I first read Tales of the iron road 10yrs ago.It was a wonderful and exciting piece of reading for me.The book informed me of my Fathers history and heritage that I had not known. It also gave me bits of family history on my fathers side that I wasnt aware of. Many years have seperated my father Steam Train Maury graham and I,but reading this book has somehow connected me to a man that Ihad heard little of as I was groing up. I will cherish it forever and never stop believing or caring for the man whom I thought was as a child my hero. Sincerely, Maurice Andrew Graham

                          Book Description

This outstanding history examines the eugenics movement from its origin to its heyday as the source of a science of human genetics. Eugenics, Human Genetics and Human Failings makes a major contribution to the study of the British eugenics movement and its applications to current scientific work.

Previous treatments have been flawed in not viewing eugenics as a science whose methods required serious consideration. By avoiding this narrow approach, Pauline Mazumdar provides a scholarly and provocative analysis, utilizing important archival material newly available to researchers. The conclusions she draws from this material give the reader important insight into the inner workings of the British Eugenics Society that published sources alone could not provide. Mazumdar identifies nineteenth-century social reform as a contributing factor in the development of the later eugenics movement, and examines the history of statistical methods involved in human genetics.

This studyalso provides a historical introduction to the current problems connected with the huge international projects for the mapping of the human genome. New methods developed in the 1980s have been successful in pinpointing the genes for diseases such as Huntington's chorea. With this scientific success has come a renewal of interest in, and fears of, eugenics in both Europe and America.

Comprehensive and compelling, Mazumdar's analysis will be of interest to historians of medicine and science, sociologists, social historians, psychologists, and human geneticists.

5 out of 5 stars The Flawed World of Genetic Security.......2004-04-14

Genetic determinism for enhancement as well as genetic determinism to remove weakness and predispositions of potential illness suffers from the idealism and greed that accompanies all recipe designers, the desire for perfection, that can never be good enough. Allowing this addictive concept to take hold can so alter the mechanics of nature that life may not be held with the sacredness that we now attach to it. The cloning that is continuously and constantly searching for the ideal is much like choosing contestants for a Miss America or a Miss Universe pageant, but applied to the choice of babies and their characteristics. Which combination could possibly be good enough? And with only 30,000 genes to choose from, wouldn't the likelihood produce idealized genetic copies or twins in short order if people were given the option to choose? The world would find it very difficult to refrain from making the "ultimate choice" if given the opportunity, and at the point where we literally compose children rather than relying upon the chance genetics that humans are currently stuck with, we may have moved beyond the world of the living into the world of fantasy where all participants become the stars of their own manufactured screen play, literally. Genetic security is approaching a time when this will be possible, and is likely to occur, allowing life to lose much of the mystery and uncertainty which makes it fascinating, and perhaps reducing it to a level of boredom with life that few will enjoy. Not only is it a moral issue; it may become a practical issue. Fixing the problems of disease in-utero is far different from designing in-utero but involves the same process, and is, therefore, highly probable to occur without stringent controls to prevent it, world wide.
