Book Description
Written by an architect who has been designing and building affordable housing for thirty years, this well-illustrated book is both a call to create well-designed places for the homeless and a review of innovative and successful building designs that now serve diverse communities across the United States. Sam Davis argues for safe and functional architectural designs and programs that symbolically reintegrate the homeless into society in buildings that offer beauty, security, and hope to those most in need.
Davis presents a new perspective, considering the personal concerns of the homeless, the social costs of homelessness, and organizational and design issues. He examines problems of community fit and site planning, building design and orga-nization, and interior layout and suggests how to weigh costs and optimize expenditures. He asks and answers a range of challenging questions: What is possible and desirable when designing a new facility for the homeless? Should it be elegant or unassuming? What types of spaces should be included? How should it look and what should it feel like? Should it be more like a house or more like a dormitory? What is the proper balance between function, quality of construction, and architectural delight?
Designing for the Homeless recounts how various communities have addressed the problem of housing the homeless, beginning with one of the most ambitious plans, the St. Vincent de Paul Village in San Diego, which opened in 1987. Davis vividly recounts the plight of those who become homeless. His practical knowledge, familiarity with solutions to date, and vision for the future--all expressed clearly and convincingly--make this innovative book an indispensable resource for architects, public policy analysts, and anyone concerned about housing the homeless.

A Timely and Timeless Overview on Solving Homelessness.......2004-12-08
To my knowledge, this is the first book which addresses how architecture plays a key role in any long-term solution to the complicated urban phenomenon of homelessness. The author, an architect with deep experience in designing shelters and transitional housing, provides an explanation of how the "continuum of care" (from emergency shelters thru assisted housing) and the integration of services and community are the key factors in any solution. He then covers the practical difficulties involved in building or renovating structures for the various homeless populations, including why "low cost housing" ends up being a misnomer. The well-researched case studies of successful shelter and housing projects from around the country will help architects, service providers and municipal agencies with their own planning.
This book packs a lot into a relatively short 145 pages (including a brief but cogent history of the problem), and I would recommend it as essential reading to anyone tasked with addressing homelessness in their own community. Architecture students interested in designing "real world" solutions would profit as well. They might well wish the illustrations were larger, but the black-and-white photos and drawings are helpful in udnerstanding the concepts and examples.

Don't be deceived.......2007-05-11
This is a great book but it is the paperback version of ISBN 071348862X. The picture on the cover is different, but otherwise it is the same book.
I read a review which indicated this was a new book by Siriol Sherlock and was very disappointed.
A great reference for artists........2006-03-09
Very precise, beautiful colorations. A great addition to my artist's reference library.
Excellent introduction to the subject.......2005-12-17
This is a first class book. There are clear illustrations on various aspects of the art and several projects that can be followed. I would recommend this book to a non-beginner as I am sure that if you had no experience the techniques she uses would be a little daunting.

Book Description
With Paintbrush and Shovel showcases the botanical watercolors of Bessie Niemeyer Marshall, a Virginia artist who received scant recognition during her lifetime. Reproduced for the first time in this volume, Marshall's beautiful paintings are the primary surviving record of a unique WPA project that put women to work creating a wildflower sanctuary in Petersburg, Virginia, during the 1930s.
Nancy Kober affectingly recounts the story of this fascinating project and the women involved: the horticulturist Donald Claiborne Holden, who directed the sanctuary's creation; the women of the Petersburg Garden Club and of Petersburg's African American community, who worked hard, in spite of segregated tasks and facilities, to establish a botanical preserve in the city's Lee Park; and the artist Bessie Marshall, whose difficult personal circumstances kept her in obscurity during her lifetime despite her obvious talent and repeated expressions of interest from curators and benefactors. Marshall eventually produced 238 watercolors for the Lee Park collection, 222 of which appear in full color in this book.
With exquisite detail and a subtle palette, the paintings depict a host of native flowers, shrubs, and trees, including some rare or imperiled species. Here, arranged by habitat, are dogwood and cat-tail, pokeweed and passion-flower, angelica and witch-hazel, redbud and rattlesnake-master. Although many of these species still grow in the vicinity of the former sanctuary, the collection is a reminder of the precarious state of many wildflower habitats and the need for continuing efforts to preserve our botanical and historical heritage.
As a gift, a reference, or simply an inspiring read, With Paintbrush and Shovel is a fittingly beautiful representation of a unique meeting of the forces of nature, history, and art.
Customer Reviews:
With Paintbrush and Shovel.......2001-05-02
With Paintbrush and Shovel is certainly a unique book. The beautiful paintings of wild flowers - 238 in all- really look more like high quality photography, they are so exquisitely detailed. The story that goes with the paintings tells an unknown story about work done by WPA women during the depression. One of the projects fostered by Roosevelt, the WPA gave work to unskilled African-American women and it was these women that cleaned up this willderness and brought the wild-flowers to Bessie Marshall to be reproduced in watercolor. The book is well-worth owning.
Breath taking wildflower paintings.......2001-04-19
The wildflower paintings in this book are absolutely unbelievably beautifully detailed. When you see them you will not believe the artist could so accurately paint the tiny delicate features of each flower and could so accurately recreate the wonderful colors. If you like, forget about the wonderful story documenting the WPA project in the 1930s to create a wildflower park and document the flowers with paintings. But, if you are an artist or a wildflower lover or both you must check this out just for the wonderful paintings.
Additionally, the printers spared no expense. They used high quality paper and achieved exquisite reproduction of the paintings. I'm sure they were fearful they would be totally out classed if they did not.
With Paint Brush and Shovel Preserving Virginia's Wildflower.......2000-11-30
This book provides a rare glimpes into the WPA projects especially designed by women. The book also illustrates the history of the park and chronicles the work of a diverse group of women who established a botanical preserve in a City Park during the 30's. The project, of national significance, was part of the WPA that provided work for African Americans and White Women during the depression. How intersting to read that the park provided an income for these deprived women, who created a wildflower/bird preserve for a small city. The beautiful botanical illustrations by B. Marshall are exquisite and the story to follow only enhances the charm of this well documented history.

Essense of the Sixties.......2005-07-06
This book gives a great insight into the excitement of the late 60's, and their less pleasant aftermath. It's written by David Harris, the famous SDS leader from Stamford who was one of the few to actually go to prison for draft resistance-- in the midst of which he married Joan Baez. Two other people are described in fascinating detail: Allard Lowenstein, an anti-war Congressman elected in the late 60's, and speaker at my Harvard commencement in 1969; and Dennis Sweeney, activist and Lowenstein protege-- who later murdered Lowenstein.
This is a terrifically writen, hard to put down, account of the hopes and disappointments of the sixties.
Allard Lowenstein may not have been gay but.........2005-04-23
In 1980 Allard Lowenstein was assassinated by a former "protege" named Dennis Sweeney. The two men first met in the early 60s when Sweeney was a 19yr old undergrad at Stanford. Lowenstein was a prof of Govt at Stanford and "Dean of Men". Sweeney was judged to be incompetent to stand trial by virtue of his schizophrenia. His whereabouts today is not clear but Lowenstein was buried in Arlington National Cemetery a few yard from JFK.
The early 60s was a time of great change and ideological fervor and the interactions of Lowenstein and Sweeney are chronicled for us here by David Victor Harris. Lowenstein was what we today would describe as a motivator and a charismatic speaker who helped wake up the youth of the New Frontier and inspired them to go out and make our world a better place. Harris was one such youth who fell under Lowenstein's spell as a "protege" and is perhaps best known today for later marrying folksinger and human rights advocate Joan Baez. [Baez stands alone as one of the few anti Viet Nam War protestors who spoke out against the brutal postwar human rights record of the conquering North Vietnamese in the South] Of course to David Harris him for that achievemt alone would be a disservice. He like so many young idealistic and presumbaly well-off young collegians (from Stanford but also from Yale and other Ivies back east) saw first hand the segregation and hatred of pre Civil Rights Act Mississippi. Their experiences of southern racism and the establishment liberal Democrats who sought to compromise and negotiate with racist Dixiecrats of that time radicalized these students and paved the way for the antiwar counterculture.
What I found most interesting about this book was the psychodynamics of the relationships Lowenstein formed with his many largely un-named "proteges". The young men like Sweeney presumably gravitated to the fatherlike figure of Lowenstein for understandable reasons. Lowenstein was in his 30s and his appeals to these young men met profound psyche needs: ie he sought out young men with "leadership potential" and then counted on them to provide him with transportation/chaueffeur services whenever he hit town on one of his many lectures to likeminded cause groupies.
In the case of Sweeney we see a young man who never really knew his own father. Lowenstein ably stepped up to fill that role. And protege Sweeney was as dedicated and idealistic as any young impressionable altar boy could ever be in the presence of Lowenstein, a veritable high priest of mid60s Liberalism.
Here we learn that my priest/altar boy comparison is apt indeed!!
Allard would ask a student if he could drive Allard to a student gathering/teach-in at any of the various campii of that era which were aflame with aroused ideological passions. Allard certainly knew how to work up a crowd and the young men were eager to do whatever they could to help spread the word of their priest/father figure.
Invariably the acolyte and Lowenstein would drive late into the night to reach their destination and eventually Lowenstein would suggest to his tired young chauffeur/protege that they stop for the night. Lowenstein would instruct the young man to wait in the car while he went in to get a room. Surprise surprise surprise!! They have only one room left and only one bed.
So the naive and unsuspecting youth would strip down to underwear and tee shirt and lie down on his half of the bed. Lowenstein would have the other half.
You can figure out what happened next. Lowenstein would invariably hug and get close up to the young man. Remember this was 1965 (or in Sweeney's case 1964!) Homosexual conduct was not as favorably or benignly viewed then among intellectuals as it is today. We cant know how many such "proteges" of the great Lowenstein endured such a maneuver since Harris seldom names them outright. Harris himself experienced a similar setup and learned that he and Sweeney werent the only young men Allard was able to manipulate into this arrangement.
Lowenstein's sexuality was never clearly revealed. He expressed great solidarity with Florida homosexuals battling against Anita Bryant but never actually came out himself even though as Harris narrates many young campus activists spoke of trysts with Lowenstein.
After Lowenstein's death Harris wrote about the "great work" Lowenstein and Sweeney had done with their voter registration drive in Mississippi. Lowenstein's fans and friends chafed at the evidence suggesting he was a sexual predator. He eventually married a gal and fathered 3 kids. One son today is a lawyer activist like his dad and worked on the disastrous John Kerry Presidential campaign.

Book Description
This simple first aid book helps kids think wisely in an emergency. Well illustrated and easy to understand, it describes accident situations that children are likely to find themselves in. The paramedic/teacher author team provides step-by-step directions for handling such common problems as cuts, bloody noses, stings, electric shock and burns.
One of our most popular children's books, "Kids to the Rescue!" opens with a note for parents, explaining how children can practice the first aid techniques. It concludes with a first aid quiz and instructions on calling 9-1-1 and other emergency numbers. The back cover has an index so kids can easily find the page of instructions they need.
Expanded and revised to cover HIV-safety.
Selected by SRA/McGraw-Hill for its fourth grade reading curriculum and praised in "School Library Journal," "The Horn Book," homeschooling and parenting publications.
Customer Reviews:
Very superficial - better selections available........2004-01-07
This book would be better than having no first aid book or reference at all - but, not much better. Topics covered include: nose bleed, something in eye, bleeding, broken bones, dog and snake bite, poisoning, insect sting, chemical burn in eye, choking, electric shock, burns, unconsciousness, clothes on fire, and dialing 911. There is also a quiz in the back. The number of topics covered are OK, but the information is often incomplete. Three examples: 1) The section on bee stings omits any discussion on finding and removing the bee's stinger without accidentally getting more bee venom in the wound. 2) The section on dog bites omits any information on how to avoid getting bitten. 3) The section on broken bones has a grand total of 53 words of advice. In fact most sections of the book fail to mention ways to avoid injury, or methods of care that are included in other children's 1st aid books. Although this book is inexpensive - I feel it is not a good buy. For a little more money I highly recomend "The Safety Book for Active Kids", which is sold by Amazon.
"Kids to the Rescue" is a book for learning........1999-07-26
I think that kids my age (7)should read this book. If they have a frisky little sister like me, they're going to babysit her soon and they will need to know these things.
Book Description
Despite the volumes written about World War II, many questions remain un-answered. In this balanced and thoughtful chronicle, historian and World War II expert Len Deighton dares to explore intriguing questions, including why the British weren't more prepared for the Blitz and why Hitler failed to thoroughly support his U-boat program. He also warns that we haven't yet learned the lessons of World War II, as ethnic cleansing, Middle East violence, and the widening gap between rich and poor still plague the world.
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2005-11-10
How did I miss this book when it was first published (in 1993)? An excellent book on the subject by an amateur historian. This is not an exhaustive, chronological study.Deighton looks at major themes and doesn't hesitate to reach back as far as he needs to for causes or amplifying details. One to keep on the bookshelf for continued reference.
Another example of why the Brits do great History.......2005-06-07
A good solid effort on a 1 volume book about the British War effort during War II. It has a lot of the Kitchen details that make for very interesting read. I liked it a lot and commend it toward you for your consideration.
An Interesting Perspective.......2004-02-12
Perhaps Deighton realized while writing this book that he had bitten off more than he could chew. He devotes six roughly equal sections to various components of the war. As a Yank, I must give him a little slack for focusing the subject of the book on the European war, and in fact I think that the section on the Pacific/Japanese war would better have been left out of the mix (and perhaps replaced with an additional section on Europe).
As I was reading the book, it really struck me how much Deighton was going out of his way to expose the manner in which the Axis lost the war, rather than the way in which the Allies won it. A thorough examination of mistakes and miscalculations by the senior leadership provides some good insight into why lady luck always seemed to be with the Brits.
Overall, I would recommend this book thoroughly, especially the section on the battle of the Atlantic, in which Deighton gives some startling figures as to the number of ships sunk and men lost over the course of the war in keeping the British and Russians supplied.
Interestingly enough, there are many myths that Deighton makes great effort to dispell, and these do provide some additional interest for the book. I suppose that this makes it somewhat novel, and provides a bit more of an objective view of the war and how it was fought than is traditionally presented. Even so, when I read book after book that provides conflict with Deighton, I ask myself if he was right. At least he made me think about it.
Worth reading, and oddly enough a fairly brisk read despite its length.
Best First Book on WWII.......2003-08-27
I wish I had read this book first before I launched into reading about WWII history. It provides a wonderful perspective missing from all the other, more pedantic histories - especially Churchill's history of WWII.
An enlightening book about the "Dark Side" of war.......2003-05-04
(by E.M. Singer, author of "Mother Flies Hurricanes")A book about the "Dark Side" of war seems kinda weird, but Deighton does it up in spectacular style. As Adolph Hitler said, "This war will be won by the side that makes the fewest mistakes" (or words to that effect), and fortunately Adolph's side made the most. (Did you know that the Bismark was sunk because of an over-protective parent?) But the Allies also pulled off some real howlers, and Deighton deftly skewers the good, the bad, and the ugly...
Book Description
Throughout its modern history China has suffered from immense destruction and loss of life from warfare. In its worst periods of warfare, the eight years of the Anti-Japanese War (1937-45), millions of civilians lost their lives. For China, the story of modern war-related death and suffering has remained hidden. The Rape of Nanking is beginning to be known, but hundreds of other massacres are still unrecognized by the outside world and even by China itself. The focus of The Scars of War is the social and psychological, not the economic, costs of war on the country. The book is illustrated with contemporary photographs and woodblock prints. Each chapter is introduced by a traditional Chinese saying (cheng-yu) on warfare.
