Earthship: How to Build your own (Earthship).......2007-08-09
This is a great "how to do it yourself" book. It was published in 1991, so I wish it had updated information, but the concept is great.
It is VERY interesting to those of you wishing to build a home off the grid, and VERY insulated.
A Good Place to Start your Energy Conservation Education.......2006-08-11
I've read the two volume Michael Reynolds "Earthship" Duo as a start to my new project to eventually design and build an energy independent and eco friendly retirement home. I'm not sure yet that I want a "composting toilet", but I do want to be educated about the entire process. This is the classic basic, The Earthship. It's a good way to start changing your mind set. How much hot water do I really need to be happy? Well organized and passionately written by someone who has dedicated a lot of thought to living responsibly on Mother Earth.

After reading lots of other underground building books I find myself asking, why build with tires? Anyhow, if your interested in underground building you might as well check this technique out. There is lots of interesting, and useful information inside, but the book could have used a lot more photos, especially colour ones. You will also learn about a new style of living in tune with the earth.

I went to Taos and toured some of the "Earth Ship" houses, and they were wonderful. I bought the books there and read them cover to cover (on the way home). These books are full of good, practical, information. If you have access to old tires, empty cans, clay mud, you could build your own house. I haven't done a house yet, but I've done some other interesting projects using these principles.

book with a difference.......2005-06-21
I just bought this book a week ago and I have already framed two pictures that I have painted with its help. I enjoyed painting them, they were simple and not challenging, just how I like painting. You can use the author's ideas with your own style thrown in. I'm happy that I bought this book.
Nice book, great exercises.......2005-04-16
This is a great place for finding new ways to look at things around you. The author uses acrylic paints and pastels on paper, so you might want to keep that in mind so you have the materials on hand when you order it.
It changed my art.......2004-08-21
I am a hobbyist, not a great artist. I found myself irresistibly drawn to do art, but I didn't enjoy it much. Other people liked my realistic work, but I didn't: it had been a ton of work and I didn't feel there was much of myself in it; it certainly didn't express how I wanted to feel when I did art. Cristina Acosta's book helped so much. It began with some really helpful two-handed exercises. There's a good balance between text and pictures. Now when I find myself bogged down in a drawing with too much realism and that's too much work, I say to myself, "Now draw it again in the Paint Happy way." Then I re-draw the picture and have a fun time. I like my paintings now. They're bright and they're MINE. Thanks to Cristina Acosta for a really revolutionary approach to art. It isn't "art-work" anymore, it's "art-fun."

Great book for getting the best photos of your subjects.......2006-06-30
Great book not so much on lighting as it is on positioning your subjects so when you do snap the shutter they are posied to look their best. This can be hard for folks overweight, this book explains how you can position just about anyone to make their photos look better and they will feel better about it.

FYI this book is true to its title. It is a tad dated by now (12/05) and the newer edition by same author is "Corrective Lighting, Posing, And Retouching." Ive thumbed through it at the local B&N. Unless there is some specific reason you need this edition, pick up the newer title.
Senior Portrait Specialist.......2003-07-29
This book contains a lot of Photos example. The Author, Jeff Smith clearly explains about lighting and posing techniques. All the photo and the explanation are refers to senior portrait photo. If you want to learn more about photo in a group you must find another book
Excellent and Down to Earth.......2002-04-08
This is a very refreshing guide to portrait photography for its focus on the imperfections of people, and how to manage them in the studio. Many other books and articles on portraiture may address these issues partially, but still tend to have images of very thin models with perfect skin, hair and eyes. Many of the models in this book are attractive, but there's a reasonable diversity of subjects compared to other sources (with some caveats noted later in this review).
The author has a very conversational style, and this short 120 page book is probably best appreciated as a really strong lecture or set of short seminars on topics (lighting, posing, making the client feel comfortable) with lots of useful tidbits and examples. This is not a rigorous reference with lighting diagrams, explanations of the functions of various equipment and accessories, and a glossary of terms and index...this book doesn't have any of these for the novice.
That sounds like a criticism, but the author's breezy, non-academic style really works well to get certain key basics across, and it's very useful for both inexperienced and experienced photographers as a result. I found the book an excellent read, particularly the section on corrective posing, and specifically the focus on getting the most out of the eyes in a portrait. The lighting discussion is good as well, though the author jumps all around with various techniques and accessories he favors, and some areas don't have a lot of detail. But again, this book is strongest for posing and basic lighting in the service of making an imperfect subject look their best, rather than extensive details around equipment and technical explanations of lighting. His discussion of backgrounds, props, and the general benefit of foreground elements is valuable as well.
The author is also very entertaining when he talks about how to engage the client in a comfortable and professional manner, and avoiding all the cliches and rude manners of other photographers.
As another reviewer pointed out, the focus does seem to be on younger women who are heavier and who in general have hang-ups about different aspects of their appearance. It appears this is the case because the author feels these subjects are much more sensitive about their appearance, relative to men. It would have been nice to see a few more people of both genders across age groups, simply because the author is so good with his existing subjects, and more detail and a greater variety of subjects would have been even better.
A final small note: this is not the book to go to for any discussion of black and white portraiture. Black and white is relegated to a small sidebar, and the author sticks to C-41 film because of the expense of processing and printing other B&W films.
With all this said, I recommend this book very highly. I'm about to read it for a second time cover to cover, to review the numerous useful concepts he discusses for the wider range of portraits I'm going to be taking this summer. Few authors communicate in as straightforward, educational and as entertaining a manner as Jeff Smith does.
A good glimpse into a contemporary portrait studio.......2002-03-27
There are a number of "tricks" professional portrait photographers use minimize the visual imperfections of a client. While many of these tricks have been around for years, the author does a good job of presenting them with real-world examples.
To be blunt, the book deals mostly with women with weight issues, most of whom are posing for their senior portraits. Using subtractive lighting, posing and sometimes props, the author shows you ways to shave a few pounds off a photograph. However, don't expect to be able to completely undo years of cheese-fries. The results are subtle, not earth-shattering.
Overall, its a very useful guide for anyone wishing to make their subjects look a little better. Unfortunately, the other problem areas don't get nearly as much coverage as weight did, some only get a few paragraphs without photographic examples. Also, the author was politely vague when discussing individual photographs. Perhaps hiring some models specifically for this book would have allowed the author go into more detail without fear of offending his clients.

A remarkable book.......2007-01-11
I quite enjoyed to read the book; it gives the reader a picture of how the lives of the German military policemen must have been, together amazingly painted art and photographies to illustrate this. Yet I hunger for more, the only thing I find sad was the book was this thin.
Not his best work, but...........2006-09-13
GERMAN SECURITY AND POLICE SOLDIER 1939 - 1945 is a small book of the handy-reference, coffee-table variety by Gordon Williamson. The prolific Williamson is well-versed on his subject, and being a former (British) military policeman himself writes with an understanding that often eludes the chair-bound historian. His book is meant to provide an illustrated overview of the MP's of the Wehrmacht, regular Police and SS/Security Police, and it certainly succeeds on that score. Williamson takes a brief look at each organization and its various offshoots, explaining their tables of organization, equipment, insignia, and history.
I should however emphasize the "brief." This is no in-depth study. The information provided, while presented accessbly enough, is crammed between a number of photographs, the quality of which, overall, is somewhat less than I'd expected. There are a number of "seen this before in 12 other books" pictures (if you read WW 2 books, you know what I'm talking about) and the quality of some of the other pics is very uneven. With some exceptions, clear uniform detail tends to be missing, and call me crazy, but the people who buy specialty books of this type are expecting a lot of it.
In addition to the photos, there is an 8 page section of color illustrations by Velimir Vuksic, a Croation artist and ex-paratrooper. They appear to have been adduced to compensate for the so-so quality of the photos, but they, too, are of inconsistent quality. The first and last illustrations are excellent, while the rest have an oddly flat and lifeless quality to them -- they look like uninspired imitations of the illustrations in Andrew Mollo's superb "Armed Forces of World War II." In fact, one of the figures on p 38 of this book seems to have been modeled directly on one of Mollo's figures.
The moralizing in the text is a bit repetitious. With such limited space to tackle his subject, Williamson would have been better served succinctly describing the various massacres perpetrated by these security troops and field policemen, and less time telling us how disgusting and villainous they were. As an ex-MP his disgust is understandable, but we don't necessarily need to hear it.
The good news is that Williamson manages to convey a lot of information in very little space. His mini history lessons are hightly informative, and his writing on the barbaric crimes committed by the notorious Kaminski and Dirlewanger brigades gave me an excellent picture of these vicious murder squads. To sum up? If you are looking for a primer on the roles, organization and regalia of the military police and security troops of the Third Reich, this isn't a bad choice. If you want meat to go with your bread, look elsewhere.

The Cherokees' "Trail of Tears" and the forced migration of other Southern tribes during the 1830s and 1840s were the most notorious consequences of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy. Less well known is the fact that many tribes of the Old Northwest territory were also forced to surrender their lands and move west of the Mississippi River. By 1850, upwards of 10,000 displaced Indians had been settled "permanently" along the wooded streams and rivers of eastern Kansas. Joseph Herring's The Enduring Indians of Kansas recounts the struggle of these determined survivors. For them, the "end of Indian Kansas" was unacceptable, and they stayed on the lands that they had been promised were theirs forever. Herring shows the reader a shifting set of native perspectives and strategies. He argues that it was by acculturation on their own terms--by walking the fine line between their traditional ways and those of the whites--that these Indians managed to survive, to retain their land, and to resist the hostile intrusions of the white world. The story of their epic struggle to survive will place a new set of names in the pantheon of American Indian heroes.

Fascinating.......2007-06-11
Very interesting book. We all know about land taken from the Indians when pioneers were settling the west. But this book explains how it all happened. Writing style makes it a very interesting book that I had trouble putting it down. Next on my list is "The End of Indian Kansas".
