Writer Sarah North with photographer Mark Nicholson take us through a stroll of Cotswold homes in a most unique way. The Cotswolds region is in central England, covering an area bounded by Oxford, Stratford, Cheltenham and Bath, an area known for quaint villages and scenic countryside. The term 'Cotswold' for most homeowners conjures visions of serene beauty of habitat and this excursion brings us closer to those elements that denote the Cotswold flavor.
But what North and Nicholson have elected as a tour is to knock on doors of various citizens who are not necessarily those with wealth, moneywise, but those who make life more beautiful. We visit the homes of florists, designers, craftsmen - the regular people of the streets and lanes of this beautiful region, and the book feels like a neighborly stroll. Interiors demonstrate the use of the elements of Cotswold design that are often copied in United States homes, but here retain the basic simplicity of functional design.

I though it was an exquisite and informative history of the organization and documentary of the state of the world's environment. My only complaint was that the typeface was too small. But I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to know more about Greenpeace or the environmental movement.

Excellent Book by Will.......2005-06-08
This book conincides with the interview I had with Will Fowler in 1999. It outlines his life as a Reporter and how different the reporter is today as it was then. I really loved the book as it detailed the life of him as a reporter in the days when newspapers were the main source of information. He is a credit to his family and his father before him, Gene Fowler.

This is an excellent book, highly recommended for writers, journalists or media of any kind. Fowler's style pulls you in as he tells his story in an enjoyable, gripping, humorous and often heartbreaking fashion. Is he still with us ??? ... because I want to tell him personally how much I enjoy this book.

The daughter of Russian émigrés, Ingrid Bengis grew up wondering whether she was American or, deep down, “really Russian.” In 1991, naïvely in love with Russia and Russian literature, she settled in St. Petersburg, where she was quickly immersed in “catastroika,” a period of immense turmoil that mirrored her own increasingly complex and contradictory experience.
Bengis’s account of her involvement with Russia is heightened by her involvement with B, a Russian whose collapsing marriage, paralleling the collapse of the Soviet Union, produces a situation in which “anything could happen.” Their relationship reflects the social tumult, as well as the sometimes dangerous consequences of American “good intentions.” As Bengis takes part in Russian life—becoming a reluctant entrepreneur, undergoing surgery in a St. Petersburg hospital, descending into a coal mine—she becomes increasingly aware of its Dostoevskian duality, never more so than when she meets the impoverished, importuning great-great-granddaughter of the writer himself. Beneath the seismic shifting remains a centuries-old preoccuption with “the big questions”: tradition and progress, destiny and activism, skepticism and faith. With its elaborate pattern of digression and its eye for the revealing detail, Bengis’s account has the hypnotic intimacy of a late-night conversation in a Russian kitchen, where such questions are perpetually being asked.

An intimate look at Bengis' rather exposed soul........2005-12-20
What a lovely and interesting little book is "Metro Stop Dostoevsky: Travels in Russian Time." It is about the experiences of an American woman in Russia who not only wants to understand Russians, but who also wants to be accepted almost as a Russian herself. Ms. Bengis lays bare her soul in this book, and it's impossible not to have empathy and admiration for her resigned doggedness and her heroic demand to fit in to a culture that seems to reject her at every turn. All I could think of for much of the time when I was reading the book was: I hope she's all right. It's one thing to be psychologically diffident, or even masochistic, but quite another to take those traits to another, far different, country and culture. She is a truly a heroine.
Alec Guiness once said that no book he ever bought prior to the 1960's ever had a typo in it, and no book bought since was ever without one. I'm afraid that this book does fall into the latter category when it comes to transliterated Russian. It's as if the occasional Russian word had been illegibly hand-written in Cyrillic and then set into type by someone who didn't know the language. Those typos are jarring, especially understanding how immersed Ms. Bengis was in the language, literature and culture of Russia. Also strange, for me at least, is the book's very first page - which you can read here on Amazon - in which the current Russian Karelian city of Vyborg is spelled Wiborg, apparently the spelling of the city's name while it was still part of Finland! Am I missing something here? Nothing in this book is especially political, so why the odd transliteration for Vyborg?
What do I think? I think if you have any interest in, or love for, things Russian you must buy this book. You may come to love Ms. Bengis a little, too, but you will surely wish her a wonderful Russian journey.

A book about Russia that makes your heart squawk like the sofa springs in Tolstoy's "Ivan Ilych" and sing like Mandelstam's "We shall meet again in St. Petersburg." Beauty for Ingrid Bengis as for Dostoevsky is a bright force and a dark well, like staring into the night sky. This is Russia's particular kind of beauty, for which _Metro Stop Dostoevsky_ is both invitation and warning, as it should be.

This is a marvelous book about the lives of ordinary Russians in the "New Russia" Ingrid Bengis has the rare aqbility to make you feel you are participating in a chat around the kitchen table in a Russian apartment.With her background in Russian literature and History she brings valuable insights intoboth what has changed and what remains the same as always in Russia.As a person who has made many trips to Russia I felt in reading the book I was back with old fiends sharing their frustrations.Above all the book is beautifully written and a pleasure to read.

The history of Egypt from the Arab conquest in 639 to the present day introduces the reader to the central paradox of Egyptian identity - the alienation of the Egyptian from his rulers, who until 1952 were foreigners, and the continuity of an area with fixed boundaries which has existed for millenia. The first three chapters deal with the Arab conquest, the age of the mamluks and Egypt’s incorporation into the Ottoman Empire, while the later part of the book examines the early development of the modern state under Muhammad Ali, the liberal experiment after 1922, the Nasser years and the legacy Nasser bequeathed to his successors, Sadat and Mubarak. The author has now updated the volume to consider Egypt’s role in the Gulf War and the ways in which the government has dealt with an increase in terrorism. Now that President Mubarak has been elected for a third term, the author asks if a new, more liberal direction is possible in the face of continuing uncertainty.

This book is more of a historical guide to the modern history of Egypt than a "history" itself. The (selected) facts and persona are taken in a chronological succession, being merely described but not analysed in-depth. So that it is only helpful as a resource for checking dates and names, but it is just disappointing as for the actual historical, political and social forces that gave form to present-day Egypt, her position in contemporary world and her most accute problems (among which the "identity"-problem: Muslim or Western Egypt?).
