Book Description
This comprehensive examination of eighteenth and nineteenth-century architecture explores its extreme diversity within the context of tremendous social, economic and political upheaval. Bergdolls offers a penetrating analysis of the very ways issues of style functioned to make architecture one of the most vitally experimental of art forms in a period of sweeping political, social, and economic change. Never before had the functional requirements and expressive capacities of architecture been tested so thoroughly and with such diversity of invention. Bergdoll traces this experimentation in a broad range of contexts, focusing in particular on the relation of architectural design to new theories of history, new categories of scientific inquiry, and the broadening audience for architecture in this period of transformation. Unlike traditional surveys with long lists of buildings and architects, the themes are elucidated by in-depth coverage of key buildings which in turn are situated in both their local and European context.

History of architecture.......2005-07-18
this book must be read with Modern Architecture by Oxford in order to understand the history of architecture. This book covers the must needed areas of the field including, the hut to Palladio, and others up until the rise of modernism, where incidently the book Modern Architecture takes over. I recommend this book in concordance to that book and for the architecture student whether for class or not.

Wow! At last art is accessible and fun!.......2003-02-01
This book unwraps the path to creativity and joyful expression, savoring color and light, and making the making of art accessible to anyone. I was in tears just reading the first few pages. What's more, I was in action: I cleared an area so I would have an artist's corner; I got out my dusty water colors (put away in discouragement after my last university class in the medium), and started to experiment with paint. What fun! The author simply won't let us get stopped or stuck by the noises in our overly critical heads. This book is like an invitation to come out and play, and this is one playground I want to explore for a long time to come. I have no aspirations to become a professional artist, but having this kind of access to the creativity inside has affected every area of my professional and personal life. My family and clients thank you for who I am becoming. Thank you, Ann K. Lindsay, wherever you are. You've helped this coach and writer blast through artist's block.
An easy way to start.......2003-01-28
Ms. Lindsay can really explain the basic "how to" in a simple easy to understand manner. At the same time she helps you really enjoy the learning experience, removing the frustration that you usually get from "self teaching" books...
Beautiful and Useful.......2002-03-03
I am a newcomer to painting and I found Ann K. Lindsay's Watercolor: A New Beginning to be extremely helpful! The book is full of information, presented in a way that those of us who don't have experience or education in art can understand. I found her teaching exercises to be both fun and useful. Linsay has a talent for encouraging the reader to tap into their own creativity, using water color as the means. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to explore the art of watercolor painting.
Lite painting........2002-01-26
This book was a little too touchy-feely for me. It is a very basic book almost as if it was written for children. I will say that the illustrations are beautiful and very fanciful, but there aren't enough examples of actual paintings and too many examples of student's doodles.
An inspiration.......2002-01-14
I bought this book because I wanted to explore my creativity with paint and didn't want to be intimidated by an overly technical book. This book turned out to be perfect. The author writes with so much love and respect for the individual as a creative being. She teaches things like technique, color, and drawing in a way that is free and fun. It is especially good for people (like me) who are very critical towards themselves, and who tend to get discouraged easily. Ann Lindsay is so good at encouraging the reader to view things positively, rather than critically. This book was such an inspiration I can't recommend it highly enough!

Carrie Mae Weems
ASIN: 0966859553 |
Book Description
This book explores "The Louisiana Project," a new work by the noted artist Carrie Mae Weems that was commissioned as part of the bicentennial celebrations surrounding the commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase. Weems has a distinguished career as a photographer interested in history and social critique and her work frequently addresses questions of race, class, and gender.
"The Louisiana Project" incorporates still photography, narrative, and video projection as part of an examination of the complex history of New Orleans and the "commingling culture" that has resulted. Photographs use the symbolism of the mirror as a means of reflection on a particular region and its history, on attitudes about blackness, as well as sexual identity. In another group of images Weems places herself in a variety of locationsplantations, railroad tracks, and chemical plantsas a witness to the experience of African Americans. The video considers a triad of relationships between white men, white women, and women of color played out as a sort of shadow dance.
Susan Cahan places "The Louisiana Project" within the framework of Weems' career, exploring the artist's methods and objectives. Pamela Metzger gives insight into the legal paradoxes and obsessions in the construction of racial identity in Louisiana.

Shallow, shallow, shallow.......2007-03-13
I was attracted by the word 'editor' and what that role would have entailed at such a successful magazine. Instead it was just a bunch of memoirs that went through her sex life, her eating obsessions and her deathly grip on her husband. Never again.
"COSMO GIRL" SPRINGS ETERNAL.......2005-05-05
Helen Gurley Brown is not especially "wild again" as the title of her latest book promises. In fact, considering the recent rash of blush-inducing tell-alls, she comes across as rather tame - opinionated but tame.
However, opinions and advice have been the now 78-year-old Ms. Brown's stock in well paid trade for over three decades. As Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan, considered the Holy Grail by millions of women, she brought sex out from under the covers, altered views of the workplace, proffered beauty hints, and dispensed dictums on whatever crossed her mind.
This eternally slender little girl from Little Rock who held 17 secretarial jobs before rising to the top of the publishing heap also penned "Sex and the Single Girl" (1962), which all but defined a decade.
I'm Wild Again defines little and rehashes much, ie "...fashion is to be taken seriously, even if it is ludicrous. Why? Because it's fun! Draping or shoeing yourself in different designs and colors every so often makes you feel frisky and new."
On the cusp of the millennium, one wonders how many women would toss away hard earned cash on something "ludicrous" in order to feel "frisky." (Which by the way appears to be Ms. Brown's most sought after condition).
Frivolity is fine, when it is recognized as such. But one has the uneasy feeling that Ms. Brown wishes to be taken seriously, even when her vocabulary includes "kissypoo" and her description of a beloved is "the man you're all squidgy about."
Never afflicted by timidity, the author offers opinions on subjects with which she has had no experience, such as being a working mother. She writes, "...to do the stuff you have to do to grow them (children) spiffy and happy, you may need to spend more time with them than affordable if you are meeting, conferencing, speaking, strategizing, junketing...those hours tote up while the kids are back-burning...."
Helpful?
Numerous studies show that sexual harassment takes its toll physically, emotionally and psychologically. Nonetheless, Ms. Brown opines, "I think offices are places where there not only is but should be sexual tension. Men and women are there together for hours and hours and knowing he's a man, you're a woman (or vice versa) is part of the fun."
She cites a former boss at Music Corporation of America who asked her to come in on Sundays, then chased her around "his beautiful, quiet office with all those fabulous antiques...."
"Of the millions of naughty suggestions made by millions of male employers to their "defenseless" female employees yearly," she continues, "I'd say half cheered the girls up, half brought the girls down but probably nothing bad has come out of most of them."
Balderdash.
The indomitable Ms. Brown also shows no hesitation in taking on the Lord's Prayer, which she describes as "one of my nightly go-to-sleep mantras" (others being left to the reader's imagination). Her revisions begin with "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors," "I have trouble because I don't think I have any debts....I've paid off everything. The Presbyterian Church's version - "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" - is murky to me.....what's a trespass? Whatever trespassing is, I don't think I'm doing it." She suggests "faults" as an appropriate substitute, while her definition of being led into temptation centers on petit fours.
Theologians are best equipped to comment on her rewrites, but perhaps that isn't necessary as she adds, "I'm not really praying to anybody anyway, just using this nice prayer and its soothing, beautiful writing to shut off the day."
While Ms. Brown is to be admired for candor in discussing her bout with breast cancer and her cosmetic surgery, perhaps rather than I'm Wild Again an apt title for this memoir would be "The Way We Were." The author's accomplishments are many, her credentials enviable, yet her memoir comes off as more old hat than new age.

DELIGHTFUL!.......2001-06-05
I have always admired HGB, so I had to get this book, and I was not disappointed. This book will make you laugh out loud. Not only is the book funny, but its full of wit and wisdom. HGB has truly had an amazing life. I hope that she continues to share her life with us through her books.
Totally "That COSMO Girl".......2001-01-24
Helen Gurley Brown tells it like it was, and her life has been more interesting than any fictional character's. She really spills the beans about the way she was; she clearly is a nice woman who had her own code of morality. That niceness keeps shining through the details, regardless of how, yes... wild those details sound. I'M WILD AGAIN is written in the same breezy style she made famous while putting the ailing COSMOPOLITAN magazine back on to the top of the heap, re-defining the magazine publishing industry in the process. She's had a hell of a ride as she moved from struggling secretary, counting every penny, to a living legend--still counting every penny! In WILD AGAIN, HGB lets her fans tag along for part of that ride.
The Longtime Legend Still Hast "It"!.......2000-06-09
People react in strong ways to Helen Gurley Brown and her "Cosmo Girl" outlook: with rage at her success despite her often politically incorrect views OR with a sigh of relief at her wonderfully whimsical, life's-a-party attitude.Obviously, I find myself in the latter camp.
In her latest candid memoir, HGB gets perhaps more personal that ever with revelations about tough times she's gone through (breast cancer, leaving Cosmo, assorted indignities of aging) with her usual unsinkable style, but perhaps revealing more depth and vulnerability than in her prior books, which tended to concentrate heavily on "land that job, land that man."
I think this is Helen at her best- the wisdom that comes from living a remarkable life (that should give hope to any late bloomer), the confidence of a woman who's succeeded too well to worry about appearing flawless, and of course, the ever-present insecurities that made her every Cosmo reader's friend on lonely nights because she'd been there, survived and eventually thrived.

Customer Reviews:
How to Write the Same Book 4 Times Without Really Trying!.......2002-05-21
This book has some good tips on getting along in the work place.
For me it was worth reading simply for the advice Helen Brown gives on how to get nails to grow. ie. 5,000 mcg of biotin each day and crisco. The biotin and crisco work; I now have nails after years of trying and failing to grow any.
I would sum up HGB's philosphy in a nutshell:
Get a man to marry you who will support you sexually and financially.
Don't have any children; it might interfere with the good life.
Get a good skin doctor and plastic surgeon in order to keep yourself buff.
Embrace the go-go NYC lifestyle.
Don't ever quit work. (Miss Brown is 78 and still shows up each day with her paper bag lunch)
Helen has some good tips about exercise and vitamins.
Wild...Again.......2001-03-06
Helen Gurley Brown basically has written the same book at least four times and only she could manage to make each new version totally captivating. This latest rewrite of "Sex and the Single Girl" covers a lot of the same ground as the original but 40 years later. It's still amazingly fresh, witty, original and brave. AND USEFUL. I'm a male mouseburger and Helen has provided many guideposts to life for me (we also turned out to have the same work habits, likes and dislikes, untiring ambition and enthusiasm for our work, love for good health). She's been there, done that, learned from it and she has always been totally generous with her wisdom. This book is a quick read, never a dull moment and mucho thought-provoking. You'll come back to it again and again. Bravo to HGB!

The most important book on parenting I've ever read.......2007-06-19
This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to be a parent. The premise is that your kids will inevitably grow up to have the traits you tell them they already have. Your words have a great effect on your children. They believe what you say. Whether you tell your child he is smart, shy, lazy, a trouble maker, good at problem solving or anything else, you greatly increase the chance that your prediction comes true. Highly recommend.

Book Description
In his new book, Tony Le Tissier provides the first detailed account of the Soviet-German conflict east of Berlin, culminating in 1945 with the last major land battle in Europe that proved decisive for the fate of Berlin. When the first Red Army soldier reached the Oder on the 31st of January, everyone at the Soviet Headquarters expected Marshall Zhukov's troops to bring a quick end to the war. However, despite desperate fighting by both sides, a stalemate persisted for two months, at the end of which the Soviet bridgeheads north and south of Kustrin were united, and the fortress finally fell. By drawing not only on official sources, but also on the accounts of individuals involved, Le Tissier meticulously reconstructs the difficult breakthrough achieved on the Oder: the establishment of bridgeheads, the battle for the fortress of Kustrin, and the bloody fight for Seelow Heights. Numerous maps and step by step illustrations show the operations of both contestants in detail and reveal a most interesting episode in the history of the Second World War in Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Best Military History Ever on The Battle of Berlin.......2007-03-25
This is the best book ever written on the Battle of Berlin. The author to his great credit uses mostly primary sources, to include interviews and memoirs of participants, unit records and histories, and his own detailed knowledge of the terrain. This book is not a rehash of other books. It breaks new ground and is a must read for students of warfare. The first 1/3 of the book focuses on the period of January-March 1945 and the battles fought on the Oder River, as the Red Army struggled to seize and expand bridgeheads, while eliminating German ones, even as the remnants of the German Army's "Army Group Vistula" threw in desperate counterattacks to stabilize the frontline short of Berlin. The author does an incredible job integrating and explaining the tactical and operational pictures of the opposing armies, and interweaving the fighting with the immense psychological pressure Stalin and Hitler placed on their commanders. Zhukov's rivalry with Koniev is explained for the first time as a life and death matter for Zhukov, as Stalin moves his chess pieces and pits them against each other to ensure and secure his own postwar prominence and leadership. The second 1/3 of the book focuses on preparations the German NINTH Army made to defend Berlin and contrasts these to those Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front made to break through the German lines and seize the Reichstag. The last 1/3 of the book focuses on the first four days of the last major Red Army offensive and ends with the incredibly bloody seizure of the Seelow Heights. Throughout the book the author tends to divide individual chapters into easily readable and understandable segments dealing with each German Corps and the Red Army forces they opposed. The maps help you follow the action. The author also provides excellent order of battle information for each side. The Germans are clearly scrapping the bottom of the barrel, but some of the Wehrmacht's last-levy forces put up an incredible fight, to include obscure formations such as "Battle Group 1001 Nights." The surprising reliance the Soviets were forced to place on the Polish Army is a clear indication the Red Army's enormous manpower losses in previous campaigns has bled Russia white. The author also explains the doctrine the opposing forces used in this campaign, to include a new (1945) German doctrine on defensive operations that would cost the Red Army dearly in men and tanks. The book ends before the actual fighting in the city of Berlin. To read about this part of the campaign, read the author's superb book, "Race to the Reichstag" and then read his "Slaughter at Halbe" for an exciting and fascinating account of the German NINTH Army's breakout south of the city to the west.
Le Tissier is the man........2007-01-10
Le Tissier furthers strengthens his hold on excellent reporting for the German-Soviet conflit in 1945.
Look for all of his works and when you have them all you have the most complete telling of Germany's final days in the east.
The Thundering of Berlin 1945.......2000-05-22
I like reading books on the subject of the Berlin War of 1945 when the Reds stormed across Eastern Europe and ready to plunge into Berlin, the heart of the Reichstag.John Le Tissier knows very well of this War and he researched thoroughly of the subject, like the blunders Zhukov committed at Sellow Heights, and the endurance as well as the misery of the 9th Army under General Busse, not to mention the decimated German Army and the preparation for the showdown in Berlin.I believe this book is not just a book of WWII, but rather a good book on Courage, Sacrifice, Endurance of the German Army as well as the Germanic people, and also the madness of Hitler and his cronies in the Highest Command of the OKW.

Customer Reviews:
Of immense interest to any researcher.......2002-01-30
On retirement from a former career, Terence Grocott decided to do something about a lifelong ambition and began researching those ships lost during those Napoleonic and Revolutionary times. What followed was 7 years of painstaking work during which he read every single copy of The Times, the Sherbourne and Yeovil Mercury and the Plymouth and Dock Telegraph published between 1793-1815. He also read all the Annual Registers for those same years. This, in itself, was no mean feat and the result is well worth the enormous effort. I congratulate him for a job well done.
"Shipwrecks of the Revolutionary & Napoleonic Eras" is a hardback book measuring 9½in x 6½in and contains 441 pages of vital information (including a ten-page index with which I had no problems!) - all from a new perspective. The appetite is immediately whetted on page 1 where the author reveals the huge scale of British ship losses at this time in our history. Beginning with a chilling quote from a contemporary British historian of 1812 - who stated; "perhaps not less than five thousand natives of these islands yearly perish at sea", Grocott goes on to show the true scale of ships lost during the years under examination. Whilst, then concentrating on just 1,500 of these (both naval and mercantile), the author demonstrates how they were but a small proportion of overall losses.
The figures speak for themselves; During the years 1793-1799 alone, 2,385 British ships were lost at sea with a further 652 driven ashore and only 70 re-floated. At this same time an incredible 4,344 were captured by the enemy with only 705 being recaptured. Thus 3,639 ships were lost to the enemy and 2,967 met a watery grave of some form or other.
Having set the overall scene - right at the beginning!, the book then concentrates on 1,500 incidents - involving both naval and merchant vessels. These are listed in chronological form with each account based on contemporary reports. The book gives details of the shipwreck, location and the number of people lost or saved. In addition to major disasters, day-to-day accidents to small harbour boats are also included. This is a book which also provides a very realistic insight into the life of the ordinary seaman of the day and of the perils he faced.
Altogether, this is a work that belongs on any serious researcher's bookshelf. Who knows what snippet of information will get you reaching for this excellent product.

Book Description
Cholesterol in Membrane Models provides the most recent summary available of basic molecular models and experiments in models of biological membranes. The book introduces the cell biology of cholesterol and covers the modeling of cholesterol in model membranes by the mean field and Monte Carlo theoretical methods. The experimental movement of cholesterol into model membranes and phase diagrams of cholesterol in these membranes by nuclear magnetic resonance and by thermal techniques using different lipid chain lengths are discussed. Light and electron microscopy that explore the spatial distribution of cholesterol in the model membrane are covered. The book also examines the use of infrared/Raman and neutron spectroscopy. Cholesterol in Membrane Models is an excellent learning resource, research tool, and reference for a wide range of experimental and theoretical scientists, including cellular biologists, biophysicists, biochemists, and molecular modelers.
