Really good and sound illustrations and excellent explanations of techniques. It was very helpful to me and taught me a lot of the wonderful styles he uses. I would recommend this video to anyone, beginner or master to learn more about light effects.

Interesting Information, short on technique.......2005-03-01

This book has a lot of interesting observations on the interactions between light and various surfaces. The value of this book is in these observations, which help the artist notice more. For example, what shadows look like, and how reflections and transparency impact water and metal and glass. These observations focus mainly on topics that will be useful to people interested in painting still life, buildings, and perhaps nature scenes. These observations will be less helpful for painters who are interested in figure painting, as the interplay of light on skin & hair is not addressed. Overall, this aspect of the book is very well done and deserves 4 to 5 stars.

The watercolor technique aspect of this book is not as well done. The main teaching technique used are step-by-step paintings. These are done better than most but, frankly, I fail to see the value of step-by-step instruction. For me, these fail to generalize the author's knowledge into useful watercolor techniques. The step-by-step instruction appears to be aimed at a beginner painter, whereas the rest of the book is intermediate to advanced.

Overall, this is a very nice book that is well worth purchasing. "Painting Spectacular Light Effects in Watercolor" is particularly nice as an inspirational book for watercolor artists.

Review of his Video: "Painting Light & Landscapes".......2004-01-09

This is a review of his *VIDEO*, "Painting Light & Landscapes".
I couldn't find it on Amazon.com so I'm putting the review under his book.

This title is separated onto two videos, part 1 about 1 hour 15 min, part 2 about 1 hour. (I couldn't get an exact time count for tape 2. It varied every time I timed it. Maybe the tape material was stretching?)

It begins with a brief bio of his training and awards, showing several of his painings in the background.

Then, a brief intro to some basic techniques, flat wash, graded wash, wet in wet, but nothing else.

Then he begins to demonstrate his painting, a foggy landscape, mostly done wet in wet.

The value of these videos is to see his demonstration of him actually painting. You see every stroke, which is very good for learning. Camera angles and audio are excellent.

But he doesn't teach design, composition, value sketch, color mixing theory, etc. If you want to learn these basics of painting you are better off with Tony Couch or Tom Lynch videos. But it is valuable to see Paul do his demo because he talks about his thinking process as he paints. It is always valuable to see how a painter thinks about his painting, his process, rather than just staying with cold techniques. These videos are excellent for that.

He points out how the water & paint behaves, how he corrects or covers up mistakes, how he layers paint to get rich values, how he choses colors he is using, how he changes his designing, etc. Its amazing how he gets his effects with his huge brushes and lots of water.

He usually names the colors he uses, mostly Winsor & Newton. But as he doesn't talk about color mixing theory, or quality of paints, he doesn't talk about permanant or fugitive clolors. At one point he mentions he is now using a *permanant* Alizarin Crimson, a historically fugitive color. (Genuine Alizarin is fugitive, which means it will fade or change over time with sunlight shining on it, and you shouldn't use it since there are permanant substitute paints for this color. *Premanant* Alizarin is most likely made up from these permanant substitue paints, but companies preserve the old name so thay can make money.) But then he uses *huge* amounts of Winsor Violet, which I belive is made of of Dioxazine, which is a fugitve color! (I hope I'm correct in this and not making a fool of myself. If I am, I appologize in advance.) According to Michael Wilcox's book, "The Wilcox Guide to the Best Watercolor Paints", he states that Dioxazine is a fugitive color. So why 1) does Mr Jackson use it if he switched to a *Permanant* Alizarin, and 2) why does Winsor & Newton continue to put out fugitve colors for sale at all???? (Read Wilcox's books to learn how to mix violets and purples using permanant colors as well as find out which paints are fugitive and which are permanant.)

While it is wonderful to see Mr. Jackson demo his painting, the whole video is *continually* broken up everytime he needs a break to dry his paper with *numerous* silly interviews of clients and samples of his paintings. These breaks happen at different times, after 5min, 12min, 17min, 24min, etc.

Showing samples of his beautiful paintings at these breaks is acceptable, although time consuming if you want to keep the actual demo on *one* VHS tape. You can go to his web site to see all his paintings. But the interviews are totally frustrating.

The interviews are of some of his clients/patrons: eg. Gov of Missouri, his 1st Lady, and several Doctors. These are more like infomercials. All they say is how wonderful Paul Jackson is, how much they like and are amazed by his art work, how his art is so detailed "it looks like photographs", how he paints upside down even though "that's impossible, but he does it!", etc. These "infomercial" commentaries are TOTALLY USELESS!!! They take up valuable video time and waste the viewer's time. These are all distinguised people, clients, patrons, nice people who really appreciate his work, but with all due respect, who cares about their comments! They are not artists. I bought the video to see Paul paint, not hear non artists babble on and on singing his praises and their amazments! I already know how wonderful he is and am amazed by his art myself, otherwise I wouldn't have bought the video and his book! I don't need nor want their comments. Its a total waste!

These breaks are short, 30 sec to 1 min each, but are so numerous, between 20-30 of them or more, they break up the flow of the video. I tried to time them to see how much time they took. Between the two videos, the infomercial interviews totalled to about 8 min, and the gallery of his paintings totalled to about 8-10min. Not much time total, but because there are so many of them, they are very frustrating and intrusive.

If the tapes had totally eliminated these useless interviews/comments and edited down the samples of his gallery of paintings, he could have fitted his *actual demo* onto a single 2 hour tape. Why, we need to ask, was it spread out onto 2 tapes with so much filler?

I rated the video with 4 stars instead of 5 because of these useless interviews. I would recommend this set of videos to actually see him paint. You just need to ignor the interviews. You can learn a lot just from observation and hearing *HIS* comments! If you get his book, you will get more step by step instructions.

If he ever does another video, which I would love to see of his tighter style, I would recommend: 1) DROP THE USELESS INFOMERCIAL INTERVIEWS! LET YOUR ART SPEAK FOR ITSELF. LET YOUR PAINTING DEMO SPEAK FOR ITSELF. and 2)show more of your planning, design stage. This is just as important as seeing you actually paint.

A beautiful book, but how much do I actually use it.......2003-08-19

I am an intermediate level painter. I appreciate the technique and artistry that goes into the paintings in this book. I also study them and read the artists comments and recomendations. They are sometimes vague and it is more of a read than a workshop book. I do not use it nearly as much as I hoped I would. This book does contain very impressive work and I would like to apply some of what I see to my own art.

This is the best watercolor book I have found yet. The light effects are stunning and inpiring. I really learned a lot and improved my skills after reading this book.

Butlin's was a network of Holiday Camps that revolutionized the British holiday in the years following World War II and, by the 1970s, was attracting a million people each year. The John Hinde team of photographers documented Butlin's glamorous and kitsch bars and ballrooms with technical brilliance and with the participation of large casts of holidaymakers. Another Time and Place.......2005-04-11

Our True Intent Is All for Your Delight will transform you for a moment and take you to another time and place. The photographs are fantastic, and it is interesting to find at least one person in a crowd looking in the camera in many shots. Indeed, you find yourself wondering about the lives of the people in the pictures and where they are now. The write ups are nicely done and help put things in better perspective for people not familiar with Butlin's. Four people saw my copy and asked to borrow it since I bought it last week. I imagine that they will find themselves planning their vacations to Butlin's as I wish I could.

I am a big fan of Bruce McCall and his work (Zany Afternoons,New Yorker, early National Lampoon). These photos look like his art come to life. Funny, oddly touching, "real life" photos. A joy!

Postcard renderings of the sixties as its kitschiest and most fabulous, completely without any hint of irony to spoil the mood.
The book could have served as a style reference book for the set design of Edward Scissorhands.
I bought it as a style reference for my work. I used to collect old Life magazines, catalogues, books whatever but this is everything you'd like to imitate from the sixties design-wise all in one.
And the reproductions are in perfect brilliant technicolor and the book is beautifully done.

Folks having fun........2003-07-27

John Hinde's wonderful photos capture a peculiarly British phenomenon, the Butlin's vacation camp. As photographer Martin Parr says in his intro...Billy Butlin had the great idea of providing a holiday park for the working class, where they could have a good time despite the English weather. The price included everything, accommodation, food and entertainment so the camps where very popular with families, ma and pa could do what they wanted knowing that the kids, not being able to stray from the enclosed site, could play all day in safety.

The fifty-five large, pin-sharp photos in this book capture exactly the feel and ambience of the various Butlin camps around the country. They all show groups of people, indoors and out, eating, dancing (ballroom dancing was always a big draw for pensioners) swimming, relaxing or whatever. Hinde used real campers for these photos and in nearly every one, if you look closely, you can always spot one person who is looking at the camera, I bet they were told to ignore the camera and all the lights and look as if they were having a good time. As these pictures show the British relaxing on vacation there are naturally plenty of men wearing a jacket, collar and tie, on sunny days too!

I think this is a lovely book that captures, with documentary style photos, the seventies look of a unique English institution.

"Snoopy: Not Your Average Dog" is one of the best "Peanuts" gift books ever! With many full color illustrations, funny quotes from celebrities, a great selection of classic Snoopy comics, from 1950 to the present, a timeline and even 3-D glasses! No "Peanuts" fan should be without this book! My only complaint about this book - it ended too soon!

Geraldo has a special kind of courage. It's not tangible or ever really evident, but trust me, it's there. He hides it behind his mustache. A heart and a soul that aren't bound by spiritual limitations, Geraldo isn't really a credible broadcaster, but I defy you to tell me that he's not oozing with Latin charm ... or is that man sweat?

Geraldo is off-putting to many Americans to put it mildly. But that is because, like many extremely intelligent people (I'd say geniuses, but that might be a little strong) he is misunderstood. He wants to help people and is strong-willed. He knows what he wants and is vocal about it. That scares some people, but is these people would read his autobiography, thye would see the real Geraldo. The one that puts family ahead of his career; the one that spent two months in the Mediteranian with his wife and children and almost died (a harrowing and inspiring chapter). This novel paints Geraldo in an entirely different light than his public persona. And when he "exposes" that light you can read how good a person he really is and what Geraldo is really about. Hope for the future!

Even those of us who decry the tabloid twist of network news have got to love the brash, brassy, bold and bullish auto-biography of this true pioneer of the news and talk TV era. "Geraldo" is quite "up front' about his flaws. His book is worth seeking out.

An excellent--but not great--Canadian novel.......2004-01-19

Whether As For Me and My House can be considered one of the "great Canadian novels" is somewhat questionable, but there is no denying that it is a profound, complex and evocative work of literature.

Set during the Great Depression, the story revolves around the domestic life of the Bentleys, who have come to a small, isolated Saskatchewan farm-community of Horizon, where Philip Bentley has taken on role of being the town's new minister.

Ministering is something that Philip, in fact has little desire to do, and is instead obsessed with painting, to the point where his wife--through whose perspective the story is told--is neglected. There relationship is essentially broken, but the reasons for this are not simple, and this essentially is the focus of the story.

Throughout the novel, Mrs. Bentley--who is never named because the work is written in the form of journal entries--continuously explores their history, their personalities and the effect of their confined lifestyle upon themselves and one another.

Over the course of their residence in Horizon she comes to realize that the break-down of their relationship, is not so much the fault of Philip's conduct, as we are first led to believe, but fact that both have allowed themsleves to become victims of circumstance.

As For Me and My House is definitely a work worth studying, but like I initially stated, I question whether it can really be considered one of the great Canadian novels.

Wind, Earth and Dust.......2002-11-17

As For Me and My House provides a descriptive tale about a preacher and his wife during the depression. Written by the hand of the wife, who remains nameless, the book incorporates vast imagery to help portray the feeble lifestyle they were trapped within. Mr. Bentley, unable to motivate himself to move beyond his unsatisfying profession as a preacher, lives in unhappiness, bringing his wife into oppression with him. Animal imagery is prevalent, as the town and its people are described in such terms. They all cower and protect themselves; with the exception of Judith, who "scales the wind" at the beginning until she discovers her own sexuality and becomes the earth....Can air continue to have 'life' when submersed into the ground?

Canadian Literature at its' best!.......1999-04-29

Through the journal entries of Mrs. Bentley, we are given a beautiful and complex novel of great importance in Canadian Literature. As a story of life during the depression, this book perfectly captures the trials of prairie life during this era. As Mrs. Bentley describes events in her journal entries, we are given a chance to not only accept the text at face value, but to read between the lines. Mrs. Bentley tends to say more by what she doesn't write than what she does. All in all, an incredible book and one which everyone should read.

The 16th Michigan from Dan Butterfield's brigade headed to the breach but was stopped thanks to quick thinking by Col. Micah Jenkins of the Palmetto (South Carolina) Sharpshooters of Anderson's brigade. One of Jenkins men who had sprained his ankle during the charge saw the Michiganders marching up. Limping over to Jenkins, he reported what he had seen. Jenkins was skeptical, but said, "I shall see who they are." Stepping forward , he asked the marchers what unit they belonged to. When the answer, "Sixteenth Michigan," came back, Jenkins ordered his men to fire. Captain Thomas Carr fell dead, the first man of the regiment killed. The Yankees and rebels had a back-and-forth battle until enough Confederates joined the fight to force the 16th back and capture its flag.

Excellent New Addition to Peninsula Campaign Literature.......2004-02-21

I liked this book a lot. Finally the Seven Days' fans out there can sit down and read a very good book dedicated solely to these battles. The only thing better would be an "Ed Bearss Vicksburg Campaign" type treatment with 3,000 pages and 3 or so volumes. I know, it's a long shot, but I can dream can't I? For now, though, at least we have this book, and it's more than just a good start. The maps are extremely good and there are plenty of them! Aside from Clifford Dowdey's book, this is the only one that concentrates specifically on the Seven Days. Burton does go down to the regimental level in many cases. Since this is my favorite campaign in the whole ACW, I was extremely happy when this one came out. 534 pp., 21 maps

Worthy companion to Clifford Dowdey's Masterwork.......2002-08-03

This is, by far, the best treatment of the Seven Days since Clifford Dowdey's best book, "THE SEVEN DAYS: THE EMERGENCE OF LEE" (1964)...since re-released under a different title, "LEE TAKES COMMAND." Considering that these two titles are separated by almost 40 years, that says volumes about how Dowdey's book has stood the test of time and how Burton's modernizes the scholarship of this most important campaign. Anyone studying Lee's first campaign should own this book, and read it in conjunction with Dowdey's treatment.

The Seven Days analyzed, but not humanized........2002-04-17

I approached this book with the high expectations of a readable and thorough account of the Seven Day's battles, and mostly I think that Mr. Burton has succeeded. However, I found that it really wasn't quite as readable as I had hoped. I tended to get bogged down in the details of the book, especially in the battle scenes, which I really had high hopes for. Instead of the "you are there" realism that authors such as Gordon Rhea provide, I instead was struck by the way that the writing almost obscured the action.

Burton tends to fill his tactical descriptions with somewhat too much information, such as the location, movements and name of every single regiment on the field. Now while this is of course necessary for a good understanding of a battle, in this case it tends to overwhelm the actual fighting, leaving the sense that it is more a recitation of troop movements instead of the exciting details of a fight. The end result, at least for me, was confusion, coupled with the desire for a more intimate explanation of the battle. There just isn't a good balance between action and analysis. After having visited the battlefield, I longed to read of the breakthrough at Gaines Mill in a personal, action-oriented manner. Instead, I came away with a pretty good idea of who was where, but no sense of just what they had accomplished. The emotion is simply not there, just the facts. Perhaps emotion just tends to obscure the truths of a battle, but I like the sense of "being there", and of knowing what the soldiers were experiencing first hand. While Burton does make use of period accounts, they just aren't as effective as they could be.

To me, the whole book seemed to be geared more towards strategy and troop movements, with a minimal emphasis on the actual fighting. In this respect, it does a fine job, and is actually an entertaining read in that respect. I was just left somewhat unfulfilled that the tactical side of the book wasn't as good.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, this book is not for the beginner. A moderate knowledge of the war seems to be assumed, and provided you are a Civil War buff, this should not be a problem.

Overall, it is a pretty good book. I don't know that I would call it the definitive account of the Seven Days though. Maybe so, if you are mostly interested in the strategic side, but the battle descriptions just lack the "spark" that makes you a part of the action. If you like the writing of such authors as Gordon Rhea and John Hennessy, you might come away feeling a little unsatisfied, as I did. I would recommend this book as a good analysis of the strategy and command decisions of the campaign, but perhaps Sears' "To the Gates of Richmond" is better at the human aspects of the action.
