I really don't think that any artist can survive with just one book on the shelf. This book is a great resource with beautiful step by step photographs. I recommend it to someone with a little experience and foundation. This book is not too intensive but also does not hold your hand at every step. A resource to add to your library. It helped me relax my style a bit.
Technical rendering...........2001-09-30
Ann Pember, author of PAINTING CLOSE-FOCUS FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOR has a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in fashion design and illustration. Before she became a free-lance illustrator, she worked as a commercial artist for many years. Photos in her book show the professional studio where she works. Technically, her work is nearly perfect. I don't particularly care for her rendering of her subject matter as it stikes me as too "commercial" and not very painterly at all, but much can be learned from her book if you have had no other exposure.
Ms. Pember's background in fashion design and illustration are apparent in her work. She takes the reader from photographs of flowers to watercolors of those photographed flowers in several steps. She reveals how the eye is attracted by asymetry (offsetting of the center) and the placement of elements; how backlighting and focused lighting affect the appearance of the subject; how surfaces and background affect the paint and matter in the execution of a watercolor. She spends some time addressing color, but Ms. Pember is not a colorist. She is more concerned with line and the arrangement of elements in a design.
The end result from my perspective are flowers that are somewhat overcontrolled, although she gives the unpracticed eye the exact opposite impression. In the end, her flowers are contrived and not original. The watercolorist can acquire some interesting tips for creating pleasing paintings, but if producing art for commercial purposes is not your goal you may find Pember's book less rewarding.
Capturing Flowers "Up-Close and Personal".......2000-09-08
I love looking at this book! For years I have been filing away myriads of floral photos with the hope that one day I might attempt to capture them in paint. I muse over these photos from time to time wondering just how a painter might do them justice. I need wonder no more. In Ann Pember's "Painting Close-Focus Flowers in Watercolor", she has been able to demonstrate a variety of step-by-fluid-step techniques to bring high drama to the world of simple blooms. Her close-ups of hollyhocks, gloxinias; and peonies float upon the pages which are jam-packed with carefully chosen, eye-pleasing colors. Thankfully, the vibrancy of Ms. Pember's palette has been well-reproduced in the printing process. There is so much valuable information packed into this book. One should read it from cover to cover initially to pick up all the helpful hints. What a wealth of knowledge Ms. Pember has shared with her readers including: preferences for specific papers, paints and brushes; how to avoid turning paints into "mud"; and my toughest assignment - how to see shapes and values as patterns; to mention a few. Ann Pember's close-up compositions are outstanding. Even if my attempts pale in comparison to this well-seasoned artist's, she is very encouraging. She reinforces the idea that given some degree of perseverence and practice, we too may develop our own means of capturing nature's beauties "up-close and personal".

Saudelli's comix art is superb--rich in detail, eroticism and humor. His Italian sensibility filters through every panel. His "Blonde" character is an ideal erotic heroine always getting tied up in knots; it's a comix caper that will entertain (and arouse) you especially if you love the foot fetish.

Lafcadio Hearn was a prolific 19th-century writer with diverse experiences. He was born in Greece; educated in Ireland, France, and England; and thereafter resided in the United States, the French West Indies, and Japan. Fascinating Stories of Human Endurance and Survival.......2006-12-06
I first read this book about 8 years ago when I picked it up at the library. It has stayed with me ever since (and I read hundreds of books a year) so I finally bought a used copy.
I think that people probably gave it 4 stars because they expect it to be about living in paradise - or expect modern stories (as a previous reader wrote). Actually, the book is about people stranded and the struggle against nature to survive.
It is well-written and provides a captivating look at people and survival.
For example, one of the stories is about the a ship captain who rescued 33 British men, women and children near the Falkland Islands in 1812 when their ship ran aground. Although the US and Brits were newly at war, the Brits to signed a document agreeing to "be at peace" while the captain rescued them. However, while he and a few shipmates were hunting for food for the Brits, the "castaways" stole the ship and abandoned the captain and his 4 shipmates, virtually leaving him with no supplies.
They spent the next 18 months stranded on an inhospitable island and struggled for survival. Through it all, the captain shows leadership, kindness and great human spirit and the author explains, sometimes in the captain's words, how they survived and what harsh conditions they faced.
This is just a typical example of the stories in the book. If you like nonfiction survivor books - this is one of the best.
I often tell my son and nieces stories and some of the stories I have told them are out of Castaways in Paradise - they are equally fascinated.

I enjoyed the stories in this book. They were well written and quite descriptive. Two of the eight stories took place in the 1900's; the rest were older (that's my only gripe).

any failings in literary grace are more than compensated with simmon's ability to ferret out tale after fascinating tale. a great book for vacation reading, to redefine the meaning of a bad day, to put the mind in some unusual places. absolutely gauranteed to liven up the dinner conversation, this one goes straight to my 'favorite-book shelf for guests'in the dacha. if you like it, also take a look at Lansing's 'Endurance.'
castaways encapsulated.......1999-12-29
Simmons gives us brief vignetttes of what real castaways endured - not always a pretty, tropical island picture. This is at the same time the book's strength and weakness. The shortish accounts allow him to cover a lot of ground (geographically and temporally), but they often left me hungry for more detail. Still, all in all, I would recommend it to anyone else out there who enjoyed "Robinson Crusoe," or simply reading about the ocean.

One of the best books I have ever read!!! Many of us wonder: if I were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would I want to have with me? Or-- wouldn't life be easier if I lived on a deserted island! James Simmons clears up any fantisies we might have regarding deserted islands, and it is not a pretty picture. I loved this book so much, I wrote to the author--something I have never done before or since!

This book is very helpful for parents of preschoolers and older kids. There are nine chapters in all and they are broken up as follows...
1. Errands: Grocery store games, how to distract kids while in a dressing room, potty visits while out, issues with elevators and escalators, how to handle visits to toy stores and more
2. Waiting: activities while waiting somewhere
3. Doctors', Hairdressers, etc: Tips for places your kids hate and more
4. Going on Outings: Tips on where to go, how to handles certain situations while at the various places.

Hurray! This is a book that is actually funny, helpful and soooo practical. I got this book before we took our 3 1/2 year old on vacation. I had only read a part of the book, but the ideas I took from it (pennies in a cool whip container was priceless,)really helped keep my fussy child happy in the car. Now that I have finished the book, I have used McKee's tips for trips to the supermarket, toy store, the doctor's office and restaurants. This is one you'll go back to again and again. The first Fussbusters book is just as wonderful and is definitely worth buying as well.

Rarely seen propaganda........2006-10-20
Having searched for some time after good examples of German propaganda aimed at Allied forces fighting at Cassino (particularly the Polish forces), this book promised much. And it delivered.
These fascinating examples are reproduced clearly, in full colour and at 'life size', each has also been translated into English.
If you're expecting a hefty tome packed with lengthy discourse, then you might be disappointed. As its title suggests, this book is more of a snapshot, and certainly one you'll look at again and again.

Book Description
This second edition is still designed for graduate students and researchers in the social, behavioral and health sciences who have modest backgrounds in mathematics and statistics. Also, priority is still given to the discussion of seminal ideas that underlie the analysis of variance. With respect to the first edition, the late Jum C. Nunnally of Vanderbilt University remarked, "Overall, there is no better text on statistics in the behavioral sciences available, and I strongly recommend it." A new feature is the optional availability of a microcomputer software package, MICRO-ANOVA, that will enable researchers to perform all analyses presented in the text on IBM PCs or equivalent computers. The software package is available through UPA.
