Even though I did not follow the books step by step classroom exercises, but used it as a reference on "how to" questions for my own projects, this book was essential for me in the creation of several designs at a very satisfying level. The explanations are well written and logical. Still at a beginners level, I was surprised at how much I had learned over the course of 2 weeks focussing on form Z (for at least several hours per day). Render Zone is also well covered in the book and it allowed me to create great and surprisingly realistic looking renderings that I was able to use for client presentations.
Clearly written from an architectural standpoint, the only thing the book lacks is addressing some of the specific needs of a product / industrial designer: adjusting the environment to working on a smaller scale, rendering surfaces and materials and lighting set up for a "product shot".
All in all, this book is certainly worth the money and will be my first choice as a guide to improve my 3D skills.

I had to learn formZ for my profession and I've gone to great lengths to do so. I had already taken two courses from different instructors and I was still feeling very unstable and was about to start a new job where I really needed the skills. Stressed-out and feeling at a loss, I did a search on the web and found this book for the new 4.0. While I already had a great understanding of the program, this book showed me so many ways to do things I had not yet been taught and I was able to do it on my own. The information is clearly laid out and easy to understand. Icons let you reference exactly where to go but the best part was the tutorials. I have not been able to find in any class or supporting material that came with the software, tutorials that let you practice. This was the most helpful as it's never enough to just know what everything does. You need to implement the info. This book saved my life (and probably my career!!)

Caplan's book Where in the World am I? is both an inspiration and an adventure. She tells her story is so well that it is hard to believe this is her first publication. Her style flows very naturally, and I loved her candid portrayal of the changes she experienced as she went from being a sad widow, to a successful real estate salesperson, and finally to a world traveler! Her positive attitude and tolerance were refreshing and, no doubt, key to her being able to live this incredible story.
Rae Caplan's story inspires anyone who thinks life is basically over after the loss of a spouse in late life. She shows how much life offers if only one is willing to take the steps she outlines in her story. Her approach to a new life takes on a cautious venture into the single world, with glimpses of her moments of fantasy and the flirtations adding spice to the
story. Her honesty encourages others in like circumstances and will inspire them to risk venturing out on their own.
Where in the World am I? is full of adventure and more bravery than most people would think possible of a woman in her later years. Her courage sustains Caplan through her sudden loss, through a career developed after she turned 60, and on a year-long adventure sailing through the South Pacific on various sailboats and touring New Zealand and Indonesia on her own, under not always ideal circumstances. The book is well written, and quite informative. It is about North Carolina's most famous regiment in the Civil War. While this might seem like a book of narrow appeal, it offers a great deal about how the war was conducted and should be of interest to any Civil War buff. I bought the book because I had an ancestor that served in it. I learned far more than I had expected. As a former
Infantry Officer and a Physician, I was also interested in tactics, morale, supply, casualties and their handling, intelligence and care of the soldier from recriutment to the end (whether death or discharge). I found all of these and much more! The battles are well described, as well.
Expecting a regimental history, I found a greater comprehension of life in the South during the War, it's politics, it's problems and their solutions, and a great military overview of many areas. If you liked Gone With the Wind, or Cold Mountain, or Shelby Foote's volumes on the history, you will get some of each here. I highly recommend this surprising book to anyone interested in the Civil War.

A must-have book for anyone with ancestors who fought in this unit, the reporting is both academically complete and personal.
Clear and stirring battle descriptions.......2004-01-01
While researching my genealogy last summer I came across this book. My great grandfather was Woodson Garrett who is mentioned in this book and who served in the Bethel Regiment. I visited several of the battlefields and the descriptions of the battles here are coherent and emotionally charged. Highly recommended.
Top notch Regimental History.......2003-02-24
Craig Chapman's book struck a chord here. As one who is very much interested in Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign of 1864, I am glad I found this jewel of a book. The author writes the story very well, and the research that he has done is exceptional in this tale of the boys from the Tarheel state.
This regiment is not as well known as the the 26th NC, but their trevails at Gettysburg was just as horrible. It also illustrates how they were used in the Overland Campaign...and the perils and suffering that they went through in 1864.
I heartily recommend the book, and can confidently say if you read it, it will be tough to put down.

Excellent Source for Civil War Uniforms.......2004-04-07
Haythornthwaite has produced an excellent source for anyone interested in how soldiers of both sides were equipped during the Civil War.
The author has produced attractive color pictures of uniforms, hats, swords, and muskets for both sides. With each uniform picture, a brief history of the unit is provided.
All in all, an excellent source of information and highly recommended!

Baumgardner presents a highly researched account of the California frontier wars that gave rise to a stable and permanent ranch economy for whites and a reservation system for the few surviving Native Americans, with a focus on the Nome Cult Farm in remote northeastern Mendocino County, California.
Congress seemed to be on a different track in dealing with the California Indians than both the California state legislature and the Indian Affairs Department. The author emphasizes the vital role played by the US Army and how lack of funding and poor coordination of various levels of government resulted in disaster for the Indians.
The book contains primary material in the form of documents, reports, letters, and depositions or testimony of participants, quoted from the California State Archives and other sources, and numerous eyewitness accounts by participants.

Killing for Land in Early California is a fascinating documentary account of a particular period of California history as it played out in Round Valley in Mendocino County in the years between 1856 and 1863 and should be of interest to Californians and non-Californians alike. The author introduces the book as "neither a definitive military history nor, strictly speaking, regional history" but as a "generally accurate summary of what happened and how and why a deadly conflict raged that lasted over five years and was so very deadly to one side." He particularizes the broad sweep of California history by focusing on events that took place during a few years in one location and, in so doing, proves the old adage that the devil is in the details. While basing his historical account on the documentary record, the author emphasizes that this record is incomplete and essentially flawed, since whatever Native American depositions existed at one time were either lost or destroyed. So, in a very concrete sense, the other side of the story must be read between the lines of the documentary record that does exist. Although before reading this book, I understood that the indigenous peoples of California died in large numbers due to the appropriation of their land by first the Spaniards and then, in the mid-nineteenth century, the Americans, I had not fully realized how suddenly and thoroughly this conquest came about. Killing for Land in Early California clearly documents how this "land grab" transpired in Round Valley. One variable that makes this local history perhaps more broadly significant then some others is that Round Valley is a location that had been designated as the ideal place for a large reservation for up to 25,000 Northern Californian Native Americans. However, contradictory goals of extermination or at least isolation of the Indians and the appropriation of their ancestral lands, on the one hand, versus official demands that the Indians be protected, provided for, and "taught" to be peaceful, obedient farmers, on the other, insured that whatever the ultimate configuration of land ownership in the Valley, the consequences for its original inhabitants would be dire. Killing for Land in Early California tells the story of this "frontier war in the late 1850s that gave rise to a stable and permanent ranch economy for the Euro-Americans and a reservation system for the few surviving Native Americans." Baumgardner concludes that "What remained of peace following this ugly race war, both for Native Americans and Euro-American settlers alike, were strong antipathies, memories of terrible events of shootings and killings, and a cold almost complete lack of mutual understanding."

For many of us, the answers that spring to mind are the things that surround us - our computers, televisions, telephones, and lightbulbs. To a scientist, the answers would most likely be different, and might includes Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation, the quantum theory and its extension into quantum mechanics, and the theory of relativity. Why should there be such a discrepancy between these two sets of answers? The problem lies in part in the distinction between science and technology, or pure and applied science. In To light such a candle, the renowned chemist and historian of science Keith Laidler examines the discoveries of some gifted individuals over the centuries - some scientists, some technologists - and how they have lit candles that have transformed our material lives. Taking seven themes in science and technology, he considers their often complicated inter-relationship. We see how "pure research" (much under threat at present) often leads to practical applications of the greatest importance. Faraday's pure research on electricity had immense technological implications, while Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation led directly to the discovery of radio transmission, something of which Maxwell himself had no conception. Conversely, the early steam engines were by no means science-based, but they led directly to the science of thermodynamics, one of the most fundamental branches of pure science. Illuminated by many fascinating stories from the history of science, this book provides a powerful argument for the relevance of pure research, and gives the general reader and scientist alike an idea of the nature and importance of the links between science and technology.
