Book Description
Walter Groppius, granddaddy of steel and glass, conceived his architectural vision in the rubble of WW I and the decadence of Weimar in the decade after.
His doctrine found fertile soil in America, where it was time to adopt a clearly defined and suitable representative architecture.
Tom Wolfe, author of THE PAINTED WORD and THE RIGHT STUFF, treats us to a chronicle of the trends that ultimately brought us the ubiquitous and baffling "glass box" of modern commerce.
"Delightfully witty, biting history of modern architecture...scintillating high comedy of big money, manners and massive manipulation of public taste." (Publishers Weekly)

Not the Wright Stuff.......2007-07-21
Tom Wolfe's FROM BAUHAUS TO OUR HOUSE skewers the Bauhaus School and Modernism in general (characterized by the International Style of architecture), as well as Post-Modernism (essentially, another version of Modernism). It's an intelligent, satirical look at an early 20th century European architectural ideology that rose up to reject the bourgeois and design for the working class--which the International Style architects may have regarded as too benighted to know what it really wanted. Apparently, according to these architects, what the worker would want, if s/he knew better, was to live in unadorned, black-and-white, steel and concrete boxes constructed with mass produced materials. Architecture schools and art institutes in the U.S. not only enthusiastically embraced the ideology ("They do things better in Europe," said Malcolm Cowley), but also its principle European champions, giving places of honor to the likes of Walter Gropius (Harvard), Mies van der Rohe (Armour Institute), and Josef Albers (Yale). Much of this movement was constructed around drawings and theory vice actually building buildings. In this way, architecture suffered from some of the same scholastic claptrap as the other arts, indeed of academe itself. When Wolfe drolly comments, "For the ambitious architect, having a theory became as vital and natural as having a telephone" (p. 121), he could have been speaking in general of contemporary academics--which many of these architects, ensconced in their university "compounds," were.
Wolfe's targets easily lend themselves to such a treatment. The Modern architects' disdain for the opinions of both client and occupant are obnoxious. One wonders why the client (but not so much the occupant) kept, as Wolfe puts it, taking it like a man. However that may be, Wolfe's style gets a bit old after a while. You just want him to chill for a bit. People weren't all necessarily duped by Modernism. The clean lines and simplicity of forms of work by Le Corbusier constitute a refreshing break from the past, and has certain aesthetic appeal. The offense of the style is not just that it is impractical; it's that it becomes so damn derivative and so dogmatic from that point on. (Frank Lloyd Wright, who was not a member of the International Style clerisy, but was "an American original," and so fairs pretty well in Wolfe's treatment, was not necessarily very practical himself. If you're a parent, tour "Falling Water" and you'll see what I mean.)
Wolfe's venom, to be sure, is aimed at the arrogance, pretentiousness, and hypocrisy of many of the leading architects comprising the Modernist and Post-Modernist movements. In that regard, Wolfe is very much on target in his criticism, even if he does go a bit overboard. Understanding that this is a screed, and not an objective critique, the reader will be pleased to find in this little book a readable, trenchant, witty, funny, and erudite treatment of these leading trends of 20th century architecture.
Mr. Wolfe, your House needs renovating.......2007-07-18
The good news is FROM BAUHAUS TO OUR HOUSE (1981) is a quick and easy read; the bad news is it is over a quarter-century out-of-date. Wolfe gives a good overview of modern architecture which developed between the wars in Germany and the Netherlands (mostly), by men [sic] who fancied themselves champions of the worker, scoffed at bourgoisie cravings for ornament and comfort, migrated to the United States, and isolated themselves in academic compounds where they spent more time issuing manifestoes and striking poses than actually designing and building buildings. These academic architects, for all their Marxist ideology, seemed to care little for what the common worker wanted or needed. And they never embraced authentic modernist American architects, such as Frank Lloyd Wright [who broke two of the compound architects' sacred rules by (a) listening to his clients, and (b) actually having clients]. Wolfe's presentation is swift and impactful and his opinions will be gratifying to anyone who is baffled or bored with modern arctitecture. I'm not sure I am ready to dismiss all 20th century architecture so completely (I love the Seagrams Building, for instance).
The book ends with a preliminary sketch and discussion of Philip Johnson's AT&T building in New York City. This building with a top that is said to emulate that of a Chippendale highboy has since been built (long enough for its original tenant to have moved out) and New Yorkers have ceased to comment on it (indicating, I suppose, either acceptance or boredom). Michael Graves, whom Wolfe criticizes for doing lots of drawing and little building, has actually taken on commissions and produced buildings that are defining post-modernism (for more about these, the reader must resort to Google). I suspect Wolfe has continued to write articles on architecture; it would be nice if he could bring these together with a Second edition of FROM BAUHAUS TO OUR HOUSE.
Check out the underlying conclusions........2007-03-26
This is a delightful little book, particularly so if you want to have your prejudices confirmed. Those prejudices would include the following: 1) Theory should never become detached from practice; 2) Elites who think they know what is best for the common folk are never to be trusted; 3) Europe is different from America and we should neither be intimidated by their culture nor excessively defensive concerning our own; 4) Ugliness--regardless of the political ideology supporting it--is still ugly; 5) Common sense and common aspiration trump hothouse academic posturing; 6) Architecture is space for human life, not an opportunity to make an abstract statement; 7) (my personal prejudice) Art deco (on the large scale) and prairie-style (domestically) so far exceed modernist or postmodernist architecture that one must wonder why they were ever abandoned.
Tom Wolfe's purpose here is to demonstrate that establishment architecture (which happened to also be left-leaning, ideological, elitist architecture) is flat-out ugly. While he shows the linear progression of influences that led to the international style and sustained it, he never fully answers the question of why so many tolerated this nonsense for so long.
I have had some personal dealings with one of the individuals in TW's rogues' gallery and I found him to be arrogant, pretentious, highhanded and not terribly imaginative. How do such individuals prosper? TW's answer, in part, is that they draw their actual living from university appointments rather than from real world construction projects, but he also argues that, in general, the consumer simply defers to such a person's judgment rather than following his own lights. Thus, one of the key lessons of the book is to trust yourself and your own inclinations and perceive the nudity of the elite culture's current emperors--a healthy antidote to many persisting cultural diseases.
Still relevant.......2006-11-14
Wolf's main thesis is that the original impulse for Bauhaus modern was for worker apartments . That it became in the lead enterprise is deeply ironic .
The impulse arose in the difficult period between the two world wars when socialism and seems more vital and relevant an extreme capitalism . Very name the "international style" was rather haphazard , appearing in an essay by Johnson based on Gropius's 1925 book , international architecture .
The jump canes with a Rockefeller supported museum of modern art in 1929 in New York . The rise of Hitler led many of the architects to emigrate to New York or the East Coast architecture schools . This is happening in parallel with Arnold Schoenberg 's abstract music . Freudians also came , of which I was a beneficiary through Fromm. The buzz around these figures masked the American and she once, for example in psychology of William James . While the Europeans were looking to the Americans in using such as Scott Joplin and the Aaron Copland , the Americans were looking to Europe . Perhaps one can say looking without finding was the characteristic of the age .
The alignment Between socialist origins and an elite clientele made a modern movement hostile to the middle class and to any sense of comfort or nostalgia . The oldest traditions became heresy . Architects like Frank Lloyd Wright was constantly marginalized . What came to dominate was what was called the "Yale box", an endless series of Cuba's made of glass and steel arranged somewhat organically and painted white and undecorated . The boards of universities and corporations embraced this move because it was simple, cheap, and made technology and modernism look good . As wolf says, "the building could scarcely have been distinguished from a Woolco discount store in a shopping center . and "an architecture whose tenets that prohibits every manifestation of exuberance, power, empire, Granger or even high spirits and playfulness . In short, the reigning architectural style in this, the very Babylon of capitalism , became worker housing. " yamasaki , the architect of the world trade center , was an early advocate and built a housing project in Saint Louis in 1955 that was dynamited in a famous movie in 1972 . The similarity with a world trade center is painful to contemplate .
Creative impulses like Aero Saranan's here terminals at Kennedy and Dallas were scorned simply because they used curves . The modern architects moved strongly from office buildings to malls and museums , but the imitators can be seen in block after block of almost any ten were cheap rectangular buildings of failing break and cracked plaster are the results and remains of a hotbed undisciplined economy.
It is striking a small number of people who made names for themselves and those. And this small number of commissions . Most of the building was done by unknowns in imitative style in collaboration with developers looking primarily at the bottom line . In a way, the modern movement was not so serious. This book does a good job of naming the characters and showing their interconnections .
From a rhetorical point of view, Wolf at critical moments compares events to the renaissance and scholasticism. Well done.
At last, an explaination of the boxes........2006-11-10
Tom Wolfe explains how it is we have houses and buildings designed as architectual statements rather than places for human habitation or work. A fast, fun, very enlightening read. I knew very little about architecture before reading this book but often wondered where these cold and sterile, chrome and white buildings came from. After reading this book I felt like I had a better understanding of the archetictual mevements in the twentieth century, the main movers and shakers, the those that went against the prevailing theories. A must read for anyone even remotely interested in archetecture.

Book Description
For both beginning and advanced painters, water can be one of the most popular but least understood of elements. In this instructive guide, author and artist E. John Robinson shows the secrets of painting water, its special properties, and the limitless ways it can be used in paintings of all mediums.
Readers will discover how to use water to convey mood, to capture the effects of wet streets and mud puddles, and to portray fog, ice, and water's reflective qualities. They'll also learn how to paint creeks and lakes, rivers and waterfalls, harbors and the ocean, weaving sunlight and shadow into all their water scenes to create works that flow with life.
Customer Reviews:
Where's the water??.......2006-10-18
The title of this review says it all. As for 'all mediums' mostly are watercolor. So, if you are into watercolor and not wanting to learn how to paint water, which what water is in there is terrible, then by all means purchase it. Personally, I sent it back as no help to me.
Robinson is the go-to person for painting water.......2006-06-19
E. John Robinson is a well known California Seascape artist that works with both oils and watercolor. In his "Painting All Aspects of Water," Robinson shares his observations and techniques gained over his many years of study and painting water.
Robinson begins with a discourse on the properties of water and the creation of mood then applies these lessons to painting every possible use of water - wet ground, puddles, rivers, waterfalls, surf, and much more.
This is an excellent book for not only the novice but also for those who are more experienced and need that little extra from a master.
Robinson is the go-to person, whether oils or watercolor, to inspire you in making your water scenes mystical and magical.
Wonderful, but not as good as the last 2 books!.......2004-06-27
If you are looking for the same level of instruction as in the prior E. John books, you won't find it. The pictures are beautiful but no major step by step process--more a global overview. I pre-ordered this book months ago, as I think E. John is a phenominal painter and seems so spiritually attuned and connected with the ocean. I was a little disappointed with this edition, but being an admirer of E. John Robinson's, I would have purchased it anyway.

Krazy & Ignatz 1927-1928: "Love Letters in Ancient Brick" (Krazy Kat)
ASIN: 1569719268 |
Book Description
This 128-page journal's cover depicts George Herriman's characters from Krazy Kat, a landmark comic strip that ran from 1913 to 1944 and explored life and love in deceptively simple drawings. The lovestruck Krazy Kat was happy to get any attention he could from Ignatz Mouse, even if it meant being the target of flying bricks.
Customer Reviews:
Should be followed as an example by it's subsesquenters.......2000-12-28
This is the earliest book collection of the Krazy Kat komic strip, published only 2 years after its creator died. Now it's been over 50 years and only a dozen or so Krazy Kat kompilations have kome to kreation since then. This book should set an example for the growing amount of K. K. books. No extra stuff, no crap, just a short introduction and move right on to a good, big, healthy dose of these subtle ironic cartoons. Not recommended to those unfamiliar with Krazy Kat, as it takes familiarity with the basic concepts of the strip to understand the subtle ironic non-joke of the whole ordeal. I'm not saying it isn't funny, but don't expect big laughs, just a little ironic chuckle here and there.

Customer Reviews:
psychological BS.......2001-11-17
I ordered this book with high hopes and was very disappointed. It was very 'deep' and psychlogical. It was hard to follow and really put me off. I was recently diagnosed with IBS and I got no help from this book.
Good information, but bad book........2001-11-16
This book contained some very useful and helpful information regarding IBS. However, the organization of the information was horrible. He mentions things without explaining them. Then later in the book he explains them, but there is no way to connect the two chapters until you have read them. He reiterates himself to no end and on trivial matters. It is not a good book to read and doesn't focus on IBS as the title might lead one to think.
good info with a touch of spirituality.......2000-05-24
Being a person who went to the doctor and was handed a pamphlet on Metamucil, and told to `cope because there is no cure for IBS'....this book was a HUGE HELP! There is a lot of basic info, but also some solid advice with strong references to other experts. I loved the way it put my mind at ease regarding so many of my symptoms. This book is the beginning of the long journey to self-help for me. It gave me hope and understanding instead of telling me to "cope".
Good for info - Not for Relief.......2000-04-08
I had great expectations for this book. Not too many books include a step by step program for a road to recovery. Unfortunately, despite the title, this book does not provide one either. It lists steps, but they are more informative than an actual road to recovery. So I was very disappointed. The book is, however, an excellent reference for someone who has recently been diagnosed with IBS or for family/friends of an individual with IBS that wants to get a better understanding of the disorder.
IBS - Finally makes sense!.......2000-03-01
After suffering for more than 20 years with IBS and going to every gastroenterologist I could find with no good results, this book is the only one that has made sense of this whole thing. Finally, someone knows exactly how I've been feeling and what to do about it. The suggestions in the book were a great help in my battle with IBS. He was compassionate and discrete, explaining symptoms and diagnosis in a way that my other doctors never did. Thank you Dr. Salt. I can't wait to read other books. I've ordered another one today and can't wait for it to get here. I would recommend this book to others suffering with IBS, fibromyalgia and other related disorders.

When the Marines dropped their famous slogan, "We're looking for a few good men," and replaced it with "The few, the proud, the Marines," they weren't just eliminating a worn-out ad campaign--they were pursuing a controversial social agenda. "The nineties were a decade in which the brass handed over their soldiers to social planners in love with an unworkable (and in many senses undesirable) vision of a politically correct utopia, one in which men and women toil side by side, equally good at the same tasks, interchangeable, and, of course, utterly undistracted by sexual interest," writes journalist Stephanie Gutmann. The Kinder, Gentler Military--an expanded version of a cover story Gutmann wrote for The New Republic--is a devastating critique of the military's sex-integration efforts. She reports of women "allowed to come into basic training at dramatically lower fitness levels and then to climb lower walls, throw shorter distances, and carry lighter packs when they got there." This has led to problems in the field: during the Gulf War, says Gutmann, "men in many units took over tearing down tents or loading boxes because most of the women simply couldn't or wouldn't do these chores as fast." Liberals will accuse Gutmann of hostility to feminism, but her strong blend of reporting and analysis overcomes that charge by describing the frustrations of women who want to contribute to the military's old-fashioned warrior culture, not its newfangled Peace Corps mentality. The Pentagon doesn't want you to read The Kinder, Gentler Military; that's all the more reason why you should. --John J. Miller
Book Description
The Kinder, Gentler Military is a devastating critique of how and why the military-the most tradition-bound, masculine institution in the United States--spent the 1990s in a tortured attempt to reform its time--proven warrior culture into a new, politically correct value system, which is decimating morale in our armed forces.
Customer Reviews:
from a soldier.......2007-03-21
As a currently deployed soldier in the US Army, I can vouch for the assessments of the author in as much as the current command climate is one that turns a blind eye to how poorly "political correctness" and the warrior culture interact. Not only does she bring to light the failure of various social experiments in our modern military, but she offers solid advice on how to correct the problems. Bottom line: the armed forces are being told to accomodate new personnel and ideals that are inherently incompatible with an effective fighting force. Future generations will have little sympathy if our defeated forces are "equal", but will merely regard us as a silly, societal experiment that failed. More people need to write/read books like this.
Finally, the truth emerges.......2006-06-18
I was so enthralled by this book that I read it in one day. Stephanie Gutmann is right on target. Except for the Marines, the military has evolved into some type of sociology lab experiment that is a cross between Gidget and Camp Grenada. I was a U.S. Army officer and spent most of my active duty days in armored cav units. I was also lucky enough to ETS from the lean green machine in 1993, before the ARMY OF NONE was created.
Gutmann's descriptions of army basic training are disturbing to say the least. I attended basic at Fort Knox in 1984. I remember being bashed in the head several times on the rifle range, kicked in the butt several times on the grenade assault course, forced to run around the barracks with a M-60 over my head for eons. I also had a tray of juice glasses dumped over my head in the mess hall because I was out of uniform. I ripped my lip open crawling under barbed wire(still have a scar) and was subject to numerous blistering burns on my right arm from hot brass being ejected on it. That's what happens when you're a lefty. Nope, never went to the medics. They would've just laughed. I also remember the drill sergeant laughing as every other piece of hot brass was ejected on to my forearm. Later on, he congratulated me for "taking" the burns and presented me with some extra ammo to fire up on automatic. There weren't any ability groups either. You ran in formation and God help the poor slob that fell out of a run. These were normal experiences that most vets over 35 have. If you couldn't handle being abused a little, how could you handle combat?
We've already seen the poor results of the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan. The 10th used to be one of the crack units in the army. Apparently, they got caught in the PC crossfire as well. Let's not forget the story of Jessica Lynch's 507th Maintenance Company which was ambushed and couldn't fight back against some Third World gang-bangers.
At the end of the day, someone has to have the guts to ask, "where are we going with all of this sensitivity garbage?" And, what kind of men do we have in this country that they would allow women to go to war? That, is the most distressing point of all.
Five stars Stephanie. You're one heck of a writer. I'm going to make you an honorary 7th Cav Trooper! Garryowen!
I was there, and she is right.......2006-05-29
I was there in the Navy during the Tailhook scandal (although, as a submarine officer, I wasn't anywhere near the center of the storm; that was about Naval Aviators), which is one of the topics in this book. I experienced first-hand many of the social experiments that were being inflicted upon the military at the time. Stephanie Gutman got it right. Don't miss this brilliant piece of journalism and crystal-clear exposition.
Whatever!.......2006-02-10
How dare someone whose never served a day of their life critisize my Marine Corps and tell other folks who never served a day in their life what the military is all about?
It takes 10 supporting troops for every front line Marine the military fields, much more for the Army. Women are still not (officially) allowed combat duties. So in spite of these colorful illustrations about women not being able to drag wounded men off the battlefield, this whining and moaning comes from a bunch of cooks and supply clerks who wouldn't know combat if it hit them in the face.
On the other hand, some of the female MPs who deployed to Iraq have had extensive training on everything from squad movements to heavy weapons. We used to let our females show our support-mos augments how to break apart and re-assemble the .50 cal. Even our 0311 (that means he came from the infantry) platoon commander lamented that the higher-ups wouldn't allow fully capable women to go outside the wire while we had to risk our lives alongside untrained water purifier augments. When my platoon was awarded combat action ribbons for our role in the initial invasion, the female Navy corpsman we had with us was not allowed to have one by her chain of command. It would have been too unprecedented to admit that a female performed many of the same combat duties as male Marines. Meanwhile she was also caring for wounded enemy prisoners under fire. And let's not belittle just how hard females work to overcome the physical shortcomings that they do have. Back when I was in boot camp, the female battalion would have revelie an hour before the rest of us on days we had PT and they would stay out there running for an hour after we were through. Face it, we have a volunteer armed forces and we should not begrudge anyone who is willing to put on a uniform and serve. Especially if you're some do-nothing reporter whose better suited at staying in the kitchen and bringing out a beer for some of the females servicemembers that she belittles.
But most importantly of all, I will not stand for some civilian trying to tell people that today's military is in any way lesser than any military from a prior generation. Now *that* is the ultimate mark of an armchair amateur who probably couldn't hack it through forming week on Paris Island. Today's military, especially the Marines, is smarter, harder, and more disciplined than ever. We kill more and die less, that is a fact, and when we're wounded there might be a female surgeon in fatigues saving our life. And there are some corporals with master's degrees out there serving in the infantry. They are up against some of the most dynamic battlefield conditions that require more training and knowledge than ever before. This is not like one of the scenes from Battle of the Bulge where a Colonel tells some Private to keep his head down. This is the NCO's war. So to all the old geezers and ignorant fools who find it easy to sit on their couch and say that my Marine Corps has been getting soft, I have to say they're just wishing they were good enough themselves.
Now we know she's right.......2005-08-07
She begins the book by saying that if America gets utterly whipped in a war five or ten years from now, we can blame Mr. Bush and Mr. Clinton for letting things slide. Well, here we are, five years later, and the US Army finds itself in a rut. While I don't blame all of our problems in Iraq on the changes of the 90's, certain things could've gone better with a better trained military. The fact that Jessica Lynche's convoy completely fell apart and couldn't fend off a squad of third world thugs shows just how poorly trained some of our support troops are. I had hoped that in the event of an actual war, the Army would wake up and realize some of Clinton's reforms had to go. It's now apparenrt they are comitted to business as usual. God help us all.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, informative textbook.......2006-04-01
This textbook is a wonderful resource for anyone in a college level or AP world history class. Stemming from over 5000bce to 2000ce, this book covers most major historical events in stunning detail. The pictures and historical accounts are excellent parallels to the information contained in the text.
I highly recommend this textbook, it is a must for anyone studying world history in detail!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent clear and concise guide to scientific illustration.......2001-06-03
I studied for three years with the author in Chicago. I recently picked this book up used and read it for the first time. I felt like he was in the room with me. The detail in his descriptions of how to render a subject are excellent. Clearly he went to great effort to describe in words what a scientific illustrator does when he or she works. I think this is one of the clearest guides for any person interested in materials and techniques of illustration. The only downside to the book is that the publisher did not reproduce some of the illustrations well. It was the only disappointment that I remember Mr.Jastrzebski mentioning regarding his book and I agree fully with him. Nevertheless the book is written so well it is worth it regardless.
