Book Description

Like its subject, this book is versatile - both practical and inspiring. Author Kira Obolensky shows how to transform a garage into a greenhouse, library, studio, apartment, or workplace. Inspiration comes from a survey of unusual garages, from hand-carved garage doors in New Hampshire to a midwestern milkman's wacky garage museum to the legendary birthplace of Apple computers in Steve Wozniak's California garage. This colorful celebration of the many possibilities of the humble garage features dozens of color illustrations and over 200 color photos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American history of architecture and lifestyle.......2007-02-15

This book is beautifully photographed and the scope is enormous. The author covers an enormous variety of handsome solutions to storage and leisure time which actually become an historic perspective. Taunton Press actually publish Fine Homebuilding magazine and I wish there had been more floor plans. This is not a "how to" book but rather a photographic essay. Perhaps, they will add a website or link in future editions for readers who might want to build such garages.

2 out of 5 stars Not garages exactly.......2004-11-08

This book and the great mass of the photos relate not to the garage, ie, a covered space where cars are stored or where a hobbyist workshop is located, but converted space or living space above a garage. If you're interested in creative garage layout, workshop arrangement, automobile-related storage, etc., this is not the book. If your desire is to turn a hardworking garage into a granny flat, this is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Isn't a garage a place to store some things, work, park?.......2004-11-04

The book is almost nothing about the garage you already own. It is about fancy buildings with garage doors to use as offices, dwellings, exhibit spaces, furniture factories, archtectural statements. If you want to keep your car dry, you will need to build another real garage.

5 out of 5 stars Garagenous Zone.......2004-05-18

Loved "Garage." And for the reader who was looking for the book "Your Garagenous Zone," you can hunt it down at www.garagenouszone.com.

5 out of 5 stars Organization is the name of the game..........2004-04-23

My garage will soon be turned into a workshop (and hopefully still park the car in there), and this book has given great ideas. I only wish I could find the book "Your Garagenous Zone" mentioned on page 98 written by Bill West. Garage : Reinventing the Place We Park

    Book Description

Manhwa—Korean for comics—is fast becoming the next big craze in Asian comics. Many fans of manga don't realize that their favorite comics, like Priest, Ragnarock, and Island, are actually manhwa, not Japanese manga. This tutorial helps artists master the differences between manga and manhwa, including less focus on big eyes and more on expressions and personality, replacing spiky hair with a more natural look, and drawing characters that don't typically possess magical powers but are instead fierce fighters made of flesh and blood. Artists learn through a step-by-step process how to draw the entire range of manhwa characters-from the extreme fighting-machine heroes and giant beasts to the sexy women, anti-heroes, and evil warlords.

For aspiring comic book artists and manga artists looking for the latest craze in Asian comics Author's Manga Mania series has sold more than 350,000 copies in less than three years Manhwa is the Korean name for comics Includes artwork from the very best Korean manhwa artists working today

2 out of 5 stars A book of pictures, nothing to learn........2007-05-14

I love Chritopher Hart's books but this one was just didn't cut it. It offered some interesting drawings and differences between anime and manhwa but REALLY, there are just some stylistic changes that any artist can do themselves. You don't need this book, really.

1 out of 5 stars No Art From Hart..........2005-10-25

Somehow Christopher Hart has managed very well to take sole cover credit for books he barely contributes artwork toward. In this particular book Hart is not even listed as a contributing artist! Typical books of this sort "by" Hart average at least 16 pages of his work out of the standard 144 pages. Check out the copyright page of this book and look at the contributing artists listed, Christopher Hart's name is nowhere to be found for the artwork in its pages.

When I look for how-to drawing instruction books I expect the listed author(s) to be responsible for all the content. Or that proper credit is given to the contributing artists by publicizing them among the book's ad details and placing their names on the cover.

That said, there's some good artwork here and to echo a previous reviewer... it's not much different from standard manga. Better books on this style of drawing are out there and worth taking time to investigate if you're serious about getting into creating this type of art. The Hart books are on average thin on the details and this one doesn't even contain art he created, what does that tell you?

    2 out of 5 stars Manhwa nothin'........2005-10-12

I got this book because I draw manga but decided that I wanted to do something a little different. The first few pages were great! They clearly showed the differences between manga and manhwa. Then he gives you a lot of pages for you to copy the drawings on and practice. Great idea! Except that its virtually all manga/anime stlye. It seemed just like some of the author's other how to draw manga books. I got this book because I DID NOT want a manga book but that's exactly what it turned out to be. If you're interested in drawing MANGA, this book is actually not too bad.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2004-11-10

I enjoyed the detailed comparison between the manga and the manhwa styles which will surely help me going a head in my career. Through out the book I found easy steps to draw lively, dark, villains, hip-hop, male & female characters in many positions that fit any mood and scene.
The book also has a great section on designing a comic scene; getting into angles, shots, sequencing and more.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Instruction.......2004-10-23

I am new to Manhwa although I've been a fan of Manga for quite a long time. Now I am a fan of Manhwa and especially this book. The comparison between Manhwa and Manga is excellent. I can assure you that if you follow the steps layed out by Christopher Hart, you will be an expert by the end of the book. I highly recommend this book. I've seen other books and this is by far the best.

      Book Description

The Celts believed that the period between day and night—the Twilight Hour—was a perilous time, when one’s earthly spirit might cross over into a supernatural world. In this gorgeous volume, Simon Marsden, a master of eerily beautiful photographs, has interspersed his own work with selections from Celtic writing as well as the imaginative works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and others. There are also real-life contemporary ghost stories, reminding us of the dark terrors that still haunt the present.

Mulatto ex-slave Frederick Douglass and half-Jewish, German-bred journalist Ottilie Assing were unlikely candidates for romance when they met in New York in 1856. But what began as an interview for a biography on the famed African American abolitionist turned into a torrid, extramarital love affair that lasted 28 years. In Love Across Color Lines, Maria Diedrich explores the labyrinthine sexual, social, and racial conventions of 19th-century American society with which these two intelligent people had to contend. Through Douglass and Assing's letters, Diedrich reconstructs the triumph and tragedy of their union. "Douglass was enchanted with his German companion, but he never again forgot that any liaison with a white woman could prove fatal to his political mission," she writes. "Assing," meanwhile, "respected the burden he had taken upon himself. She defied conventional notions of morality and became both intellectually and physically intimate with this extraordinary man, certain that he would marry her." When Douglass's wife died, however, he eventually married another (younger, white) woman--and Assing committed suicide. In addition to uncovering a vital aspect of Douglass's personal life largely overlooked by previous biographers, Diedrich's informative work looks at Assing's remarkable sacrifice, powered by a love that propelled her into America's bewildering racial wilderness. --Eugene Holley Jr.

        Book Description

In this nuanced, sympathetic interpretation of two extraordinary lives, Maria Diedrich acquaints us with an important and little-known relationship. Ottilie Assing, an intrepid German journalist, met and interviewed Frederick Douglass in 1856, and it was an encounter that transformed the lives of both. Diedrich reveals in fascinating detail their intimate twenty-eight-year relationship, their shared intellectual and cultural interests, and their work together on Douglass's abolitionist writings. Love Across Color Lines is a profound meditation on nineteenth-century racial, class, and national boundaries, and offers new insights into the career of a preeminent American leader.

5 out of 5 stars Assing & Douglass: Radicalism Beyond Social Taboos.......1999-12-18

A decade ago no one had heard of Ottilie Assing or had a clue that she played an important role not only in shaping European perceptions of the US in the crucial years up to and including the Civil War but in her role as collaborator and lover of Douglass for almost 30 years. Then, Terence Pickett, a scholar of German literature doing research in Poland, stumbled on a folder of letters that revealed an intimate acquaintance and passionate involvement between the German immigrant journalist and the American abolitionist. Pickett cautiously called it a friendship, but when William McFeeley used this information in his 1991 Douglass biography, he strongly suspected that the relationship went beyond friendship. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., choosing his words carefully, has meanwhile also concluded that for "much of Douglass's mature career, Assing was his principal intellectual consort." Maria Diedrich's "Love Across Color Lines" finally gives a detailed and thoroughly researched account of the life of this extraordinary woman, her background, commitment to radical causes, emigration in 1852, involvement in abolitionism, passionate attachment to Douglass, and her courageous but tragic end. It is an amazing story, deeply embedded in the stormy social and political conditions on both sides of the Atlantic. One consistent theme is that Assing's commitment to social revolution, having been frustrated by the botched events of 1848-49 in Germany, plays itself out in her support of radical abolitionism, which she consistently sees in terms of a second American Revolution. Another suggestive argument develops the continuity between Assing's partly Jewish background and her attitude toward slavery and race in the US. Though Assing often expressed typical 19th-century racial attitudes, her experience of belonging to a despised minority in Germany helped her to espouse the cause of black Americans, sometimes with more radical passion than Douglass himself. Most original and interesting, moreover, is Diedrich's carefully argued idea that Assing's imagination was infused with the romanticized representation of a black African prince and a white European woman in a novel by one of her close German friends, who based it on Aphra Behn's "Oroonoko." With all of Assing's emphasis on rational social analysis, much of her relationship with Douglass must be explained in terms of the kind of romantic orientalism that shaped her imagination. As Diedrich makes clear in her narrative, the essential problem of writing this biography was the one-sidedness of the evidence. Assing destroyed all letters (hundreds of them) from Douglass; he destroyed all but 27 from her to him, and he mentions her only in passing in his third autobiography. The story that emerges is largely based on Ottilie's letters to her sister and friends, on her published journalism, and on a handful of manuscripts. But the circumstantial evidence--that Douglass and Assing corresponded more or less weekly for more than 25 years, that during those years Assing spent several months every summer with the Douglasses, and that Douglass often visited and stayed with Assing in Hoboken (seeking refuge there when he was in imminent danger of arrest after John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry)--strongly suggests that her passion was reciprocated and that theirs was an intense intellectual and a fully sexual relationship. Aside from these important and fascinating details (which include the highly probable fact that Assing actually ghost-wrote some of Douglass's journalism in "The New National Era"), one of the great strengths of this book is that it places these personal matters in the larger framework of social and political conditions: the abolitionist movement, women's emancipation, the Civil War, Washington politics, the crusades for the Civil Rights amendments in the 1870s, and much more. Diedrich offers us a profound and nuanced insight into how this complex interracial relationship between two committed social radicals could develop in an America rife with political turmoil as well as racial and sexual taboos. The fact that this compelling story has remained veiled for so long is yet another reminder that these taboos continue to exert their fearful power in our own time. Maria Diedrich deserves everyone's gratitude for lifting the veil so thoughtfully, tactfully, and definitively.

5 out of 5 stars I still laugh when I think of this book!.......2006-08-23

I read this in two days! The author documents his move to a small rustic town in southern spain in which he and his girlfriend buy a small home. The accounts of the people he meets and much of the miscommunications between him and the people are very personable and humorous. The author is an English-American so he comes from a mixed viewpoint which means you can identify both with his reflections as well as his initial impressions of the people he meets. I still laugh when I think of his misadventures!

        4 out of 5 stars A Travelogue of Sorts.......2005-09-28

I think the author wrote this book as an act of revenge for what his girlfriend did to him while they were living together in a rural farmhouse in Spain.

It makes for thoughtful reading on what can go wrong if you live far away from the creature comforts of life with electricity, water & food on tap and take it for granted. The author lives in an outlying rural region without any connection to electricity and tap water is from a well. To confound things, the land is not very fertile, as summers can be very hot and rains are not frequent. Only certain types of vegetation can thrive.

I would label this book as "Survivor with Realism" theme. Not your normal "Survivor" series, but what is actually required of you given the constraints of nature. It is not your normal expatriate living abroad squabbling with builders, engaging with townfolk though there is some episodes on that, enjoying wine types of Peter Mayle's world.

A good read if you want to know how the rest of rural Spain lives.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "Report" on Life in Rural Spain as a Transplant.......2004-06-13

I'm not much of a book reviewer, but I picked up this book recently, merely on the attraction of the title "How NOT To Live Abroad". Hmm, I tought that looked pretty interesting. I was not disappointed, it was a compelling read all around.

The basic premise of the book is that Shaun Briley (the son of Jon Briley, who scripted the "Gandhi" movie blockbuster) and his girlfriend are living uncomfortably with her mom in the UK, and so decide to go on vacation to Spain to escape the mom. Totally unplanned they end up buying a rural farm house in deep Spain, thinking this would be eternal bliss of sun and coctails. The book cronicles the pair's misadventures in adjusting to that rural life (no modern amenities we take for granted such as electricity, bathroom, etc.), while at the same time describing the ups and downs, and ultimate demise, of the couple's relationship.

Briley writes with a great sense of humor, and the pages fly by. As a transplant myself (but not to a rural setting), I took an immediate liking to the book, and found it hard to put down. I highly recommend as perfect beach reading for the coming summer!

              Book Description

What kind of world do you wish for your students? For all people? Nurturing the Peacemakers in Our Students offers middle and high school teachers fresh ideas to inspire and nurture the peacemakers among their students by showing them how adolescents have experienced war.

Chris Weber, as well as a wonderful cast of contributors, including Peter Elbow, Bill Bigelow, and Jim Burke, demonstrate that through reading, discussing, and writing about narratives of children who have experienced war, students make connections between what they see, hear, and read through the media about military conflicts and their horrible human consequences. This critical examination of war then inspires subsequent opportunities for students to use their literacy skills to communicate with others dedicated to ending global violence. In fact Nurturing the Peacemakers in Our Students offers lists of online organizations and projects where kids can become part of a national, international, even global community of peacemakers.

Nurturing the Peacemakers in Our Students is an extraordinarily timely book whose call for empathy, consciousness, and critical thought gives teachers the chance to make a difference in the literacy lives of their students, in the quality of their students' lives, and in the quality of the lives we all live as citizens of the world.

                      Book Description

One of the largest and most feared military forces in the world, the Red Army was a key player in advancing the cause of Soviet socialism. Rising out of revolutionary-era citizen militias, it aspired to the greatness needed to confront its Cold War adversaries but was woefully unprepared to change with the times.

In this first comprehensive study of the Soviet officer corps, Roger Reese traces the history of the Red Army from Civil War triumph through near-decimation in World War II and demoralizing quagmire in Afghanistan to the close scrutiny it came under during Gorbachev's reform era. Reese takes readers inside the Red Army to reconstruct the social and institutional dynamics that shaped its leadership and effectiveness over seventy-three years. He depicts the lives of these officers by revealing their class origins, life experiences, party loyalty, and attitudes toward professionalism. He tells how these men were shaped by Russian culture and Soviet politics-and how the Communist Party dominated every aspect of their careers but never allowed them the autonomy they needed to cultivate a high level of military effectiveness.

Despite its struggle to develop and maintain professionalism, the officer corps was often hampered by factors inextricably intertwined with the Soviet state: Marxist theory, revolutionary ideology, friction between party and non-party members, and the influence of the army's political administration organs. Reese shows that by rejecting the Western bourgeois model of military professionalism the state greatly limited its officer corps' ability to develop a more effective military. While a sense of group identity emerged among officers after World War II, it quickly lost relevance in the face of postwar challenges, especially the war in Afghanistan, which underscored fatal flaws in command leadership.

Red Commanders offers new insight into the workings of a military giant and also restores Leon Trotsky to his rightful place in Soviet military history by featuring his ideas on building a new army from the ground up. It is an important look behind the scenes at a military establishment that continues to face leadership challenges in Russia today.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent history of the Officer Corps.......2007-08-16

Reese makes many excellent points and I commend him for producing such a fine piece of literature on the Red Army, and specifically the officer corps. I found only one error on his part so far, he claims that battalion commissars were labeled 'kombats' and battalion commanders 'batkoms' while in fact the opposite holds true. A small mistake but one that immediately caught my attention.

What I give the author a lot of praise for is showing how intertwined the officer corps was with the politics of the nation. This is one of the biggest reasons, that the author argues, which allowed the purges of the Red Army to reach such heights. In fact it is his opinion that without the intermingling of party politics with the Red Army the purges might have never come about. I can agree and disagree with this statement. I agree with the fact that one of the biggest reasons Stalin decided to purge the Red Army was because he had a fear of it since it participated in some of the worst deeds under his government. Many high ranking Generals, and certainly the Marshals, were members of the Bolshevik party, and held various posts in party organizations. Because of this many had allegiances to various factions that had been gotten rid of by Stalin (those who followed Trotsky or Zinoviev for example) and it also clouded their perceptions of what their jobs as high ranking officers should have entailed. Where I disagree with Reese is the fact that without these connections to party politics there is still reason to think some of these commanders could have been convicted of "Bonapartism" if they had any friends in the government, for example, or if they had ever expressed anger or disdain for what the party was doing. It will never be known if Reese is correct in his interpretation of this aspect of the officer corps but it is food for thought.

As previously mentioned the higher ranking officers cared little for those subordinate to them and even less for the average enlisted man. This gap would show itself in the fact that many divisions and other formations were not up to the challenges of the future war. Training was not taken seriously nor given the amount of attention and time it deserved. Drunkenness, abuse of subordinates, and other actions which should have been outlawed were allowed. Reese also makes an interesting case for the fact that while the purges most definitely took some talent out of the Red Army this cannot be claimed for every single person discharged, executed, or sent to a GULag camp. He is also correct in the fact that the army itself had blood on its hands when its own military districts started to discharge officers, since they had permission to do so without Moscow's approval, all they had to do was phone in and state who was discharged. An order was also issued to discharge officers of various nationalities, Finns, Koreans, Poles, etc. As this process began it proved too hard to stop, one order issued by Voroshilov was ignored and it took another, coming from the NKO and NKVD to stop the bloodshed and discharges.

This book is also helpful in the fact that Reese gives numbers for those troops discharged as well as those who were then reinstated. There was an affect on the Red Army officer corps but it was not as serious as many claim. Interestingly enough, there were previous purges within armed forces for years before 1937 in which tens of thousands were discharged for various reasons, many times due to their political orientation. The officer corps was suffering throughout the late 1920's and all of the 1930's as the Red Army expanded. Officers were also in short supply and lacking in their training and education, even worse many were being manhandled into the army which created a caste of officers who had no desire to belong to the army nor did they see a future in it. This book is a must for those interested in the Red Army, it gave me (someone who's been reading on the subject for a decade) a brand new glimpse into the Soviet system and the operations of the Red Army officer class, highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Very critical of the Soviet officer corps.......2005-09-09

Reese writes that the Soviet officer failed to develop an independent identity, impose dicipline in the ranks, and train small units. Reese mantains that the Soviet officer corps lacked a professional sense of identity since Soviet officers had to be members of the Communist party and this involved them in interparty disputes further political commissars with no professional abilities could be generals. Soviet officers also used commissars to try to impose order in the ranks and this made them fail to have any sense of group identity with the ranks. Furthermore, this neglect of enlisted men, made it possible for abuse to occur betweem NCOs and lower ranking members of the Red army. Soviet officers also did not develop small unit tactics that required individual intiative, and this greatly impeded the effectiveness of the Red Army throughout its history. The only weakness of the book is that Reese leaves out the reason why that the Soviet officer corps managed to conduct effective strategic moves, such as the 1944 summer offensive, during the Second World while failed in the area of tactics. I would greatly reccomend this book for anyone has an interest Russian military history.

She continues with an examination of social and regional variation in Spanish, and investigates dialects, language attitudes, and style and register, particularly in the media. She also questions the relationship between gender and language. The book ends with a focus on current issues, particularly those arising from language policies and legislation, especially in the education system. Written for readers with a practical knowledge of Spanish, the book is informative and practical, encouraging readers to think for themselves.

                      4 out of 5 stars Mar-Molinero's Book.......2006-11-10

This book was used for a graduate course in Spanish Sociolinguistics and it was a good book. She brings up some very interesting points and it's easy to read and comprehend. It is a good start for discussing these issues. The only downfall to this book is it's very Eurocentric and there is not enough focus on ALL Spanish-speaking countries.

2 out of 5 stars Spanish speaking 'world'?.......2002-04-05

The title of the book is very engaging, unfortunately it does not deliver what it would appear to promise. The topics raised in the table of contents are all interesting, but the book does not cover any of them really in-depth. Some of the activities are very nice, however.

What bothers me most about this book is its neve to claim to treat the Spanish speaking 'world' and only dedicate a couple of pages to anywhere outside of Spain. I find that even the coverage of the linguistic diversity within Spain is weak. The book follows a traditional division of language and dialect (something I spend an entire semester trying to teach my students is artificial) and then does not even bring up the fact that more and more the government is trying to revitalize these tongues and are officially recognizing them as 'languages'.

If you are a college professor looking to use this book in an undergraduate course, I would use this book to get ideas on how to structure the course, and perhaps for some interesting activities, but I think that there are other sources that could provide better content.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but could be much better.......2000-09-22

I have used this book in a college-level class on Spanish linguistics, primarily for Spanish majors.

This book definitely fills a void. There doesn't seem to be anything like it available at the moment that introduces undergraduates to the language situation in the "Spanish-speaking world" as well as to some of the history of how it got this way.

The book, however, is less than perfect. Much of the treatment of the topics is way too superficial, even for undergraduates. The book could have been quite a bit longer and not have been too long. The book is also very uneven with regards to amount and quality of coverage. One does get the impression that the author does not have extensive background in the discipline.

Other things are annoying as well. Such as, for example, quite a few of the lengthy quotes which assume a fairly high command of Spanish seemed unnecessary (or should have been translated). Finally -- I just have to say this -- everyone who read the book was extremely annoyed by the constant use of whilst, and other British-isms.

I do hope that a second edition of this book is in the works. Or that someone else publishes something better along the same lines. Then again, there is also a great need for not excessively technical books (undergraduate level) on Spanish phonetics and phonology and on the history of Spanish. I just can't believe that there isn't a market for them.
