Book Description
* Qualitative graphic approach to understanding the techniques of heating, cooling, and lighting reflects the decision-making approach of architects and students.
* Useful appendices provide sun path diagrams and solar site evaluation tools. Appendices new to this edition include practical checklists of strategies and issues in evaluating energy use in the building design stage, and an annotated list of helpful sustainability videos to use in class, professional meetings, or with clients.
* A new chapter on photovoltaics discusses their use as an ideal energy source, offers design options, and case studies as well as their future role in building design.
* A new chapter on sustainable "green" design includes case studies and examples of water conservation measures, effects from energy production and consumption, and an analysis of indoor air quality.
* Mathematical formulas are excerpted from the text and appear in side boxes, so they don't cloud the text with overly-technical information.

Good Book, Easy Read.......2007-09-12
As a mechnical engineer working on energy efficient buildings, this book enabled me to step back view buildings from an architectural point of view. It is easy to read and understand and delivers relevant basic knowledge. Although there are newer books with more update information this book is a good package delivering the basics.
Great Book.......2006-12-22
Very informative and easy to read. I picked this book up to study for my Architect's License Exam and found it to be a very well rounded book. There are lots of good ideas for saving energy and good practices for building orientation and construction. There are also plans on how to build a small sun machine for testing your models. My only disappointment were the numerous typos. A good editor could have taken care of that. Otherwise good author, good info. Highly recommended.
Excellent text book for environmental system course and design studio.......2006-06-08
A very clear and concise presentation of the basic material (as stated in the title) for all architecture, construction science, and interior design undergraduate students. The three tier conceptual approach, presented at the beginning, really helps the students understand the structure of the presentation. The "key ideas" section at the end of each chapter helps the students study for my quizzes too. I have found that the appendices and bibliography are very helpful for graduate students - further study. At the beginning of the semester, an undergraqduate ID student ask me what the relevance of the story about Easter Island had for her. By the time we arrived at the chpaters on "Lighting", she told me she got it. The biggest problem with using this book in a undergraduate lecture course for design students is that the studio instructors can no longer say that the students "said they didn't get" both the sustainability issues and technical information needed to have a strong basic understanding to apply to design thinking. Now they will be forced to invent other reasons for why students are not required to fully integrate by 4th year studio and beyond - and still develop strong conceptual ideas. Among other reference text, I also found that Allen/Iano's "Studio Companion" as a supplement is helpful for further visualizing the HVAC systems and their direct application to building design thinking. The major technical weakness/omission is that it is missing one good chapter dedicated to water - hence the 4 star instead of 5 star rating in my opinion.
Oh Norbert!.......2001-01-16
Any owner of a pith helmet with attached solar-powered fan will love this book. I have only met one such person, the author. However, this book represents the most rigorous process for sustainable design that I have encountered. This is the place to start if you need LEEDs certification.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough, Systematic, Beautiful!.......2005-01-15
Yes, this book is full of beautiful pictures to drool over. After an hour or so of taking in the photos, you may begin to notice there's words and stuff around the photos. Words about the importance of maintaining consistent clay body chemistry when fine-tuning your glaze recipes and firing programs, how to protect your kiln from the caustic "runny" glazes that will ooze right off the bottom of the work, and so forth.
What particularly impressed me as I paid more attention to the words was the author's emphasis on systematic experimentation. There are a lot of variables that affect the formation of zinc oxide crystals, or even whether you'll get any crystal formation at all. So, from the very start you're going to have to run a series of controlled tests to find the "sweet spot" for crystal formation in your kiln, on your particular clay body chemistry, for a particular glaze recipe and firing program. Once you've dialed that in, you can tweak individual parts of the system (glaze formulation, glaze application and thickness, firing program) to alter your baseline crystal glaze. The authors provide detailed recipes and firing programs as well as notes on directions the reader can explore through further experimentation to develop your own unique signature glazes.

Book Description
A seedy private eye is hideously murdered after taking tawdry, career-threatening photos of the beautiful host of a popular children`s show. When the P.I.`s associate searches for the answers behind his friend`s killing, he is drawn into a netherworld he never imagined existed and discovers truths he wishes he`d never found. Penned by CyberSix creator Carlos Trillo and illustrated by acclaimed 100 Bullets artist Eduardo Risso, Video Noire is a taut, hard-edged journey into violent passions, forbidden obsessions...and ancient evil. Video Noire is another exciting Venture graphic album, published in collaboration with Strip Art Features, and available for the first time in an English-language edition!
Customer Reviews:
Hard to read, nice to look at.......2002-10-03
Eduardo Risso is an awesome artist. His work on 100 Bullets is phenomenal. Somehow in this book, however, his work is lacking something. I'm not saying this book isn't well drawn, I'm just saying I've seen way better stuff from Risso. Trillo's story (specifically the dialogue) doesn't do much to help Risso's art. I would reccomend this one only to hardcore fans of Risso. Even then It's hard to reccomend.
Nice art, weird story.......2002-09-27
Let me get this out of the way and say that i bought this for one reason only, Eduardo Risso's art. He's one of the best comic book artists working today. He has won countless awards for his amazing work on the DC comics series 100 Bullets. Though released a year ago from Dark Horse, this book actually precedes 100 Bullets. I believe this was originally released overseas in it's original language in either 1997 or 1999, i can't remember which. So it's older Risso, but still very good. Video Noire is a bizarre story with a female villain who happens to be the host of a children's television show. A detective is killed by her demonic child minions after he takes incriminating photographs of her in order to blackmail her, and his partner is out for revenge. To say anymore would be giving away too much. The writer Carlos Trillo has worked with Risso a few other times as well. I can only imagine what kind of stories those are. With the rising popularity of Risso continuing, i commend Dark Horse for reprinting his foreign work in english. November 2002, Dark Horse is releasing another black and white trade paperback through their Venture imprint by Risso called Cain, which i believe is an even older work than Video Noire, so it should be interesting indeed.
WEIRD..............2002-06-13
A Xuxa-esque childrens TV-show hostess, "Miss Dready", is in reality a demonic being bent on using the boob-tube to ensnare her young viewers in her web of evil. A harried P.I., investigating the gruesome death of his partner (Gnawed to death by Dready's "Nieces and Nephews"...) is drawn into the ancient battle of Good vs. Evil, and is soon neck-deep in Satanism, Beastiality, Human Sacrifice, and high-tech evil.
Yeah, this IS just as weird as it sounds. The plot verges on ridiculous, but the art, by Eduardo Risso, of 100 Bullets fame, is gorgeous, and there are enough good things about the book, especially the nihilistic ending, that I can give it a MILD recommendation to people looking for something VERY different.
Fans of films like Angel Heart and VideoDrome will probably feel right at home with the lovely Dready.....

Starts out O.K., but..............2003-01-07
The first half of this book consists of a multitude of "human interest" stories regarding condemned Texans walking the "last mile."
The second half of the book, though, is a soapbox for overbearing anti-death penalty rhetoric.
If you think you can tolerate the second half of the book, the first half of the book is worth it.

ONE MAN'S REMARKABLE SEARCH FOR
THE ULTIMATE TRUTHS OF OUR WORLD
For Professor Roger Hart, life truly began after he almost lost his -- in a horrific fall off the slopes of Mount Everest that he miraculously survived. This near-death experience sparked a desire in him to devote his studies to the very nature of human consciousness, in order to unlock the code of reality that binds our world.
On an adventure of discovery that would take him around the world, Hart would experience life-altering transcendental events in Tibet, Morocco, and Tierra del Fuego -- opening the door to a true understanding of the nature of man. In this groundbreaking volume, he explores the participation of consciousness in the creation of reality, challenging the traditional scientific view of time, space, and objectivity -- and describing in detail his own metaphysical journey, which has involved synchronicity, precognition, and telekinesis. It is an exploration of the very things that make us human -- and a quest that touches upon the meaning of life itself.

Magic Theater Entrance : For Madmen Only.......2006-04-13
This is a remarkable biography, by turns a crackling adventure, a touching bildungsroman, and a full-on philosophical treatise on the symbiotic entanglement of mind and matter. Mr Hart is a gifted writer with the power to completely immerse the reader as he explores some of the harshest, most inaccessible terrain on the planet --- and in the heart. For those seeking to understand or reconcile the duality of nature, this book is about as good as it gets. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be awed. You may even miss the '60s...
Strange and beautiful things told by a reliable witness........2004-06-07
Young adventurer has religious experience during apparently fatal plunge off cliff with famous mountaineer during first breathing apparatus-free attempt at Everest and follows it up with a series of extreme, live-changing experiences in harsh and exotic places to build a theory about causality as well as a solid career in geophysics.
Very trippy and exciting -- I read it from cover to cover in one long airplane flight.
Also, I think he's a very solid witness, unlike a lot of books in this genre. He's a research scientist, as well as having a serious interest in religious and existential questions, and it makes his voice much clearer and more convincing to me at least. His theorizing is a bit dodgy to me -- not wrong as much as not very predictive -- but certainly thought-provoking enough and enlightening to contemplate.
Highly recommended!
A scientific review of the mystical.......2004-04-10
Dr. Roger Hart had a near death experience, an out of body journey, and a couple of other mystical events in his life. He has searched quantum physics for the answers and has blended these life altering events in an authoratative tale that can be accepted by the most skeptical - if read with an open mind.
His delivery of the information is like a novel, and is an exciting autobiography.
This book can be a life altering event.
Interesting, Informative, Intriguing, Inspiring.......2004-01-30
As a geophysicist, author Hart had a difficult time reconciling his two near-death experiences and other transcendental moments with the mechanistic scientific worldview he had adopted. "I did not believe anything unless I actually experienced it or could prove it scientifically, as with electromagnetic radiation, quantum mechanics, or relativity," he writes.
During a 180-foot fall high up on Mount Everest, Hart felt "perched on the cusp of time" as a great warmth and euphoria overtook him. He remembers thinking he was about to die and wondering why it felt so wonderful. "Space seemed warm, comfortable, full of light, even though there were no visible objects," he writes. In a later NDE, during an expedition in s Tierra del Fuego, he recalls another part of himself watching his freezing physical body as if from a telescope in another universe.
Because his NDEs and experiences of synchronicity, precognition, and telekinesis were life-altering, Hart began struggling with the materialistic ways of life, finding his jobs meaningless and boring while lacking the motivation to rise through the ranks of academia. Thus, he began a lifelong quest to understand the nature of consciousness. He encounters two gurus, one a Sherpa tribesman named Chombi and, while working in India, a yoga teacher named Guruji, both of whom help him make sense out of his experiences. Among other things, Chombi explains to him that the world we see, even time itself, is an illusion projected by the lower self and that if we are to experience the higher world, the lower self must be subdued. Guruji informs him that consciousness is composed of vibrations and that all matter is to some degree conscious. "We and the stars are part of the same field of vibrations," Guruji explains. "Separation is only an illusion."
An Indian physicist, Goswami, provids further enlightenment, helping Hart apply the lessons of quantum physics to the NDE. Hart, who seems to have a good grasp of quantum physics, has a number of "eureka moments" in which his experiences and observations begin to make real sense to him. One not well versed in quantum physics will likely struggle with his interpretations and explanations, but nearly everyone should get the gist of it.
"I am not the first person to realize that the mind survives the body, or that the reality of the universe is a marvelous field of information and infinite potentials, or that we ourselves create time by opening static time capsules in the field of information," Hart states. "But I had the joy of discovering these ideas independently before I was exposed to them by others." His discoveries make for a fascinating read.
An awsome book.......2003-10-20
It is a thrilling adventure; it keeps you on your feet, turning the pages with a fear of having to stop; but even more important, it offers insightfull and inspiring thoughts on the meaning of life; it makes you ponder the reason for your own existance.

Thoughtful and loveley journal.......2003-01-13
Well chosen author's quotes inspire a woman to reach and find the essence that is her. One of my favorite journals ever.
What a wonderful way to relax and focus on ME!.......1999-06-09
What a beautiful book! The questions are challenging and provacative -- stimulating much thought. This tasteful journal offers a delightful way to think about unrealized hopes and dreams -- and begin planning to make them come true. The cover design and elastic page holder is perfect. This book was originally a gift for myself. It has now become a favorite gift from me to my closest friends.
Customer Reviews:
depressing reading.......2006-03-16
You might be depressed after reading this book. It suggests how wars, though mostly civil wars, can take on a certain inevitable dynamic. After which, the wars can drag on for years. And drag down the countries. An especially grim fate for a developing country that might have already have huge needs before the conflict began.

Book Description
This is not an economics book. It is a book about the application of economic principles and concepts in decision making related to space activities. The book is primarily tutorial and elaborates upon concepts and methodology and their applications. Emphasis is placed upon applications with typical results of performed analyses presented to demonstrate concepts and methods.
The use of mathematical and simulation models serves as the underpinning for much of the presented materials. A number of models are described with numerous applications presented. The specific models considered have been selected to demonstrate the role that a structured thought process can play in the decision process. Since most decisions relating to technology development, product design, capital expenditures, and investments involve uncertainty and risk, a number of the selected models, developed methodologies, and presented examples explicitly and quantitatively consider uncertainty and risk.
The objective of this book is to put economic analysis into perspective with respect to real-world decision making in the space industry. It will expand the perspective of the reader with respect to the type of tools and analyses that might be brought to bear on complex business and government problems.

Material NOT for the Timid Space Advocate.......2007-01-07
Economic Principles Applied to Space Industry Decisions is a tough read. Perhaps due to my own challenged knowledge of two more complex subjects, e.g. applied economics and rocket science, I had to work at this book taking each chapter slowly, deliberately, and re-read time and again to attempt to gain the nuggets of knowledge the authors sought seriously to give me. One must really have passion for the subject matter to enjoy this book. Even as a space human destiny advocate armed with an undergraduate minor in economics and near-completion of graduate master of science in space studies, this was a challenging book with calculus tossed about with economic graphs. I would recommend the authors do a more simplified version of the book and seek models based on the NewSpace industry now emerging, e.g. Virgin Galactic, SpaceX, XCOR, AirLaunch, t/Space, SpaceHab, Bigelow Aerospace, and the smaller, more flexiable firms. Another niche for these authors would be to focus a text on the decline of the American share of the international launch market that tanked in the 21st Century.
