Book Description
Some of the world's most beautiful houses grace the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Houses by the Sea is as colorful, creative, and inspiring as the homes themselves. The photography, by Rigoberto Moreno, is so vibrant and crisp that each page seems like a window onto these stunning homes and their lush surroundings.
Each section of the book highlights one of these unique homes and describes the architect's particular challenges and constraints in building it, from unusual owner requests to difficult cliffside terrain. Many of the projects employed indigenous materials or traditional designs, and these are also described, along with some landscaping and interior design features.
Customer Reviews:
These houses are sick!.......2003-11-09
I went and visited at one of these houses. It was the most amazing place I had ever been. I recommend anyone to go there. It is heaven and the area is great not yet insanely americanized like Cancun. 5000 a night to rent these places check it out.
A Gorgeous Book of Dream Houses.......2003-07-17
This book was enough to start me dreaming of retiring to Mexico--or maybe just taking a looong vacation there! The photographs are stunning--really incredible. I also enjoyed the writing style in the sections where they discuss the goals for each house and the owners and architects input toward the whole project.

Customer Reviews:
wire jewelry - a beginners guide.......2007-07-20
I received this book as a gift from a daughter and it started a whole new part of my life. These designs are quite basic and it takes some fooling around to get some of them just right. But then I wanted MORE- so now I am working with metals and other media along with the wire. I don't use this book too much anymore, but it was a great first step!
Beautiful jewelry, but the instructions are a little vague..........2007-07-16
The jewelry is stunning, but like a good recipe, if you skip a step or an ingredient, you will end up with a mess. The author assumes we know what she is talking about in her instructions. The book should mention that it is for more advanced users. I am hanging onto this one though because I hope as my skills increase I will be able to use it. The designs are absolutely gorgeous. I also appreciated the jig patterns in the back.
Don't waste your time or money.......2007-04-07
This book is only good for the pictures. The instructions are nearly impossible to understand and in many instances the measurements are simply wrong. For example, the project on page 17 calls for 1 1/4" of wire to produce the link when in reality it requires 3". This is not an isolated incident. I am an experienced wire worker and can figure out how to produce the jewelry, but only by looking at the photo. There are no interim pictures to explain the process and the text is confusing. Save yourself the money and look at designs on the Internet or in magazines if you are looking for inspiration. For learning to work with wire, go to BEAD ON A WIRE by Sharilyn Miller. That book is EXCELLENT, with plenty of photos to illustrate the well-written instructions. BEAD ON A WIRE taught me everything I needed to produce beautiful jewelry with my first attempt at wire work. I still wear my first piece and always get compliments on it. And it was made with my practice copper! MAKING BEAD & WIRE JEWELRY is a waste of resources.
Good photos and ideas, low on instruction, poor editing.......2006-11-29
Lots of nice photos, but you need to figure it out yourself on how to do them. Very poorly edited - some instructions just stop in the middle of a sentence. The last design tells you to go to a certain page to get the pattern for it - and it is not on that page or on any page in the book at all. It is simply missing.
So it was a frustrating read.
However, there are some great designs. So I'd say it is a good book if you are already somewhat familiar with wire and hammering and design - good ideas for you -but not a great book for beginner jewelry makers.
Outdated, maybe?.......2006-06-06
I got this book from the library and didn't keep it for long. As a wire beginner I found the designs easy to do since there are sufficient instructions in the beginning. The jewelry pieces are very basic, and I noticed that some of them can easily snag on hair or clothing. This will pull the designs apart. I tried making a few links of some of them and found this to be true. I also found some of the designs to be way "un"-designs, I don't find they have artistic integrity. There are a few nice ideas, but I would not buy this book. Maybe it is outdated?

Customer Reviews:
A very good beginner's book........2007-03-21
I have been interested in photography for quite a while. I've taken many photos, but have never found the elements that i need to understand to compose good images. This book takes you from a know-nothing beginning, through Lines, Shapes, Negative/Positive Space, the grid, etc. It lays an excellent groundwork with lots of examples to get you started with the right way of taking pictures. The assigments are a good way to put the knowledge learned in the book to practical use. No expensive cameras needed, even a cheap 35mm SLR you can find at a thrift store (i found mine with 2 lenses for 19.99) is perfect for this book.

Funny stuff here.......2003-09-12
I teach computers in high school and can relate to the cartoons in this book. In fact, I use a few of them on my inter school memos. They're attention grabbers. The cartoons are funny and each has a nugget of truth in it which any teacher can recognize.
I love this book.
Hi Tech Hi Laughs.......2003-04-08
There's some funny stuff in this book! I teach computers in a public school and the situations portrayed in this adorable volume seem familiar, with a humorous twist. These cartoons are professionally sketched and make wonderful intro pieces for our school's in-service courses where our staff can upgrade their computer skills.
The Antidote to Computer Frustration.......2003-03-08
Great work! These are funny on-target cartoons. If you use a computer you've already visited these situations but now you can laugh about it. Even if you don't know a hard drive from a memory stick, get this book and laugh a little before you boot up. Teachers beware! You're going to have a smile on your face every time you go near that computer in school.
Hi-Tech Funniness.......2003-03-08
I teach computer classes in high school and in college. The cartoons in this funny book deserve a place on the class bulletin board. A few have been posted there for all to enjoy. The author has a clever way of portraying familiar tech situations in cartoon shorthand. The artwork is very professional and enjoyable. I plan to use one of the cartoons as an ice-breaker for an upcoming workshop.
Computers Can Be Funny.......2003-03-07
I teach computer courses and the situations described in this wonderful cartoon book look familiar, with a very funny twist.
These are professionally sketched cartoons and I have placed a few of them on a bulletin board in the class. We all get a kick out of them. Don't forget to back up your hard drive and to buy this book.

Book Description
All the things in our lives that we are grateful for can be traced to someone we are grateful to.
Imagine saying thank you to all the people who have affected our lives, taught us, encouraged us, touched us, and had a part in making us who we are. Author and freelance journalist Pam Janis has done more than imagine. A brush with mortality opened her eyes to all that she had to be grateful for - and the people who touched her heart, her soul, and her funny bone.
In a series of poignant, humorous, and heartfelt letters, Pam expresses her deepest appreciation to the people who had a profound impact on her life. Her spirited voice reveals a wide range of emotions and experiences that are familiar to all of us. From getting her ears pierced with her sister to hearing the Beatles for the first time to thanking her stepfather for all the joy he brought to her mother, Pam's letters illuminate the life-affirming power of love. Her remarkable example ignites the spark of gratitude in everyone, inspiring and enabling each of us to take up the pen to thank the people who have shaped our lives.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful gem of a book -- great gift item!.......2000-05-26
I happened across this gem of a book about a year ago. I cherish writing and receiving letters and postcards, and my gratitude journal helps keep me balanced and, more important, grounded in this crazy high-tech world we live in. Pam's collection of letters comes from her heart and will go straight to yours; she has a wonderful gift for language and humor. This is such an enjoyable and heart warming book, that I re-read it often. What I also discovered is how it helps me reflect on my own life and so many chance events and people (even chance acquaintances) that I'd forgotten about, who have shaped my life and taught me so much about myself. My favorites of her letters include her ode to the Bic pen, and the broadcast letter to her favorite authors for their stories and language. "Thanks Everyone" has become one of my favorite perfect gifts to give, to friends both young and old (including high school or college girls). It's always well received. Enjoy!
Joyfully written to touch your heart and your spirit........1999-05-01
What a joy to read Ms. Janis' letters. She brings focus to the way we can be grateful for all our life experiences. Gratitude with no regrets. She writes with a style that amuses the heart of the reader.
great to have a thank you that is meaningful :).......1999-04-20

Nakajima's Ki-84 Hayate (Frank) revisited.......2002-07-02
Upon reading this one at the shop I discovered that it was an old aquintance, it was the 2nd edition of my Aircam no.29. It even has exactly the same title, most of the text and photographs. I always wondered if Mr. Bueschel would write more about Japanese planes, or whether Osprey or Arco would publish more from him in their -now abandonned- series.
It might be possible to write a better book about the Hayate, and maybe there is a book in Japanese that is better than this one, but if that is the case, how come that we don't know about it?
So congratulations to Mr. Bueschel and Schiffer books for the fact that they found each other and that Mr. Bueschel is able to continuate -and even expand- his series about Japanese planes in the second world war, for some time the only reference about these planes together with the book Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War by René Francillon and the book about the camouflage and markings of Japanese Army Air Force planes by Donald W. Thorpe.

Mining California: An Ecological History
ASIN: 1580462200 |
Book Description
This volume explores the intersection of cities and the natural environment in an array of urban places, including New York, London, New Orleans, Venice, and Seattle, across a broad period from the late Renaissance to the present. The essays investigate the ecological context of revolts-both real and imagined-by urban squatters and slaves; urban epidemics and their cultural and political consequences; the social and economic impact of natural catastrophes upon urban places; and the environmental history of the rise and fall of cities. The Nature of Cities brings together the work of scholars employing new methods of research in urban and environmental history. The contributors to the volume, who include Karl Appuhn, Joanna Dyl, Ari Kelman, Matthew Klingle, Emmanuel Kreike, Sara Pritchard, Peter Thorsheim, and Ellen Stroud, represent a new generation of scholars in urban environmental history. Their innovative and interdisciplinary work draws on race, class, consumerism, landscape studies, and culture to address such questions as racial and class conflicts in urban public spaces; the cultural construction and control of public spaces by economic and government powers; and the idealization of cities as apart from nature. Andrew C. Isenberg is associate professor of history at Temple University. He is the author of The Destruction of the Bison: An Environmental History, 1750-1920 (New York, 2000), and Mining California: An Ecological History (New York, 2005).
Book Description
This historical compendium investigates scientific methods conceived between the Renaissance and the nineteenth century. Beginning with attacks on Scholasticism and the rist of the New Science, the authors explain the roles of both major andminor figures in describing scientific methods. Although the chapters are interrelated and contain explicit comparisons, each chapter is a complete study in itself. The authors' emphasis on writing for the non-specialist and their liberal use of primary sources make this an outstanding textbook.
