Book Description

Evanescent. Restrained. Ethereal. These are some of the words used to describe the architecture of Kengo Kuma, one of the most heralded of a new generation of Japanese architects. A recent article in Architecture writes of Kuma that "he strives to give his buildings the qualities of a rainbow, composed of shimmering particles, more illusion than object, that change as you look at them."
Increasingly the focus of international renown, Kuma's work is characterized by a delicate simplicity and minimalism, incorporating a wide range of ephemeral transparencies. Their ineffable vibrancy is achieved largely by the extensive and skillful use of screens: metal, wooden, bamboo, and even stone louvers or slates, as well as paper, plastic, and glass surfaces or membranes. His use of new, sophisticated, and efficient technologies, his sensitivity to site, and his attention to the ecological and prevailing social context of his work are all explored in Kengo Kuma: Selected Works, the first full-length monograph on the work of this enormous talent. Included are all of Kuma's most recent projects, including the Museum of Ando Hiroshige, the Stone Museum, the Horai Onsen Bath House in Atami, Louis Vuitton Tokyo Headquarters, and the Nagasaki Prefectural Museum.
Kengo Kuma: Selected Works is an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in the best contemporary architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Kengo Kuma.......2006-11-16

The book is structured in three parts. It starts with Kengo Kuma's 4 pages of introductory writing, then, Botond Bognar's writing on Kuma, and finally, series of images that captures the essence of each project. Here is an architect whose ultimate goal of design is to erase so that a building would become one with its surroundings.

It sounds almost suicidal and dumb for an architect to say it, but Kuma writes ",,,stone is not my favorite material,,, for the same reason,,,I do not like concrete..." The solidity of the two materials are heavy and suffocating for him. By actively throwing away two of the most favored materials, Kuma has opened a new dimension for glass/wood/paper.

His keyword for the use of these materials is "Particlization." Repetition of slats/ sliding panels/ shoji screens/ bamboos are some of recurring elements of his architecture. Many Japanese architects past and present have used these tradition-referenced elements, yet rarely has one achieved the level of perfection and sophistication that Kuma has achieved. His architecture talks about the mystery of dense filtering.

Wood, is light, yet when repeated by Kuma, it becomes dense and heavy. Wood also decays, yet when used in Kuma's fashion, it expresses duration and sublimity (ex, Museum of Ando Hiroshige). Seeing the plans of Kuma's architecture, one would easily be in a state of deja vu. Katsura Palace's bipolarization of garden and building is strikingly miniaturized in his plans (ex, River/Filter, Water/Glass). Element of garden (sometimes reflecting pool) dissolves his architecture into bigger surroundings.

This book helped me see two things. One, Kengo Kuma's obsession with the idea of "erasing"; and the other, a possible connection to the traditions of Japanese architecture in the contemporary practice. Lastly, Bognar's essay helps us to locate Kuma in the context of other Japanese architects and also help us to analyze material/spatial/tradition-related issues of Kuma architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2006-01-25

A great design resource for the price: large high quality photos, nicely keyed plan/section/elevation for every project, great graphic layout. To be honest, I haven't read a word of the text, but the photos and drawings are worth the purchase price. Of course Kuma's work is excellent - if you like 'screens' this is the book for you..

3 out of 5 stars Good works, OK book.......2005-10-08

Kuma always seek to experiment w/ new materails, and the subsequent construction and detailing in his projects are quite unusual and interesting. The formulation of new material and its tectonic, unlike that of Herzog & de Meuron, has systematically addressed the issues of 'Transparency' and 'Dematerialization', in a clearly Japanese fashion, and I can't help but recall Mies's (unfinished) pursuit of same concept, although the latter eventually became reconciled by resolution of structural system, which is almost philosophical, a polar opposite to the 'phenomenal' Barcelona Pavilion project.

Anyway, enough of arch history sentiment . I'm kinda disppointed in the editing of this book. Instead of focusing on the best ones, this book assigns about same numbers of pages to every work, including the mundane, mediocre one. [...].

5 out of 5 stars Architecture and Nature.......2005-10-01

Kengo Kuma can reflected the nature by using architecture spaces and elements. And also combined architecture with context very well. Kengo Kuma's Details came out the idea of nature. In my opinion his selected work most of that tell us how to bring and combine the nature with architecture very well.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than "Art Class" - a MUST for artists w/poor memory.......2007-09-15

For those of us who actually want to learn something new, something you probably didn't learn in undergrad. Excellent refrence book for specific pigments and the results when mixed with others. For example, I forgot that when mixing Cadmium Red w/a blue results in a "brownish" viloet hue. Instead using Alizeran Crimson creates a much more desireble violet.

Not only does this book dispell myths, include historical birthings of pigments, give acurate detailed information about each color (including variations w/in each family)...it also has a chapter on "Creative Directions". This is a really great chapter giving inspiration for branching out w/your work.

I'm an art teacher, and artist myself. I don't have to the time I'd like to keep my own journals of pigments and mixed colors...it just isn't practical for me...too much to do, too little time. This book is amazing, perfect for the 3 second memory I have and much better than leafing through an ENORMOUS reference book just to remember which red to use when making violet (was it Alizeran Crimson or Cadmium Red)...

However, if you're just starting out in painting or you're looking for a sequence for a "curriculum" get the "New Artist's Manual...". It is basically this book and "Art Class" combined. Wish I had bought that one first.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2004-05-22

Excellent! Well organized with great side comments, this book is really a journal for color. From its significance, invention and evolution into what we know today, this book is full of color information that is fun to learn. Jennings gives you a true education in color appreciation complete with nuance, historical facts and lots of pictures. Easy to reference, it is a great addition to any library. I have been looking for a book like this for a long time. Much thanks to the author.

This book is great for a beginning photographer or a professional artist who wants to get beyond traditional photography. Some of the techniques outlined in this book, such as magazine transfers, are accessible to people without darkrooms or cameras because you use magazine pages to create images. After reading this book, I began looking at photographic materials more creatively.

          5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-04-02

One of the best books written by an American. Read it, and you will agree.

The book was compared to "The Education of Henry Adams" when it was first published. I think Sevareid's book is much better. Ignorant of me? I hope not. I have read them both more than once, and Sevareid is the best.

This is the book to read about America in the 20th Century. The depression, riding the rails, the incredible canoe trip Sevareid and his friend made, pre-war Europe and Nazi Germany.

Then, the war. Sevareid saw it from Asia and Europe. He survived the crash of his C-46 crossing "the Hump," and returned to Europe to see the end of the war.

You see the war as he saw it, and you read one remarkable story after another. Sevareid's account of the war is personal, on a personal level. He writes of people and events. the GI slogging through Italy, and the impressions left by encounters with the great and powerful.

What a great book. He wrote thoughtfully and beautifully. His observations are remarkable. You feel America when you read his book. What a treat to have this book around. Just fabulous.

4 out of 5 stars The Life of Sevareid.......2005-11-12

Well, yes, Eric Sevareid's autobiography to the year 1946 is a good read by a seasoned world observer. He grew up in the same North Dakota milieu as my father. I liked the part where he was advised not to enlist during World War II because he might find himself "...cranking a mimeograph machine in the public relations section of some Nebraska army camp for the next three years." Surely his contributions as a wartime news correspondent served in good stead.

I'm not sure Sevareid thought much of women-he refers to an "honest whore" and "old crones." His wife is barely mentioned. Then again, he was a product of his time. Sevareid ends his book with, I guess, a plea for niceness and not bad war. As has been said, however, men love war. It is "...like lifting a corner of the Universe and taking a peek." We'll never top that.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of tributes: He wrote well........2004-10-05

The rarest of coming of age stories, one that deals not with the emotional struggles that adolescents face upon reaching social maturity, but instead a story of a generation and a nation (would that we Xers had a representative as articulate and thoughtful as Severeid) coming to terms with their ideological commitments and global responsibilities.

          5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2002-12-21

The quote in the first review should be "Post proof ... " and not "Post proves." Makes sense that way.

5 out of 5 stars Sevareid's Odyssey is an American Classic.......2001-09-11

Those who choose to read Sevareid's Not So Wild A Dream will quickly find themselves in an encounter with a great mind and a writer who had command of the English language. Sevareid vividly describes his upbringing on the Northern Plains that naturally conditioned him to be an isolationist of the post World War I variety.
Sevareid remained true to his early isolationist convictions when he became involved in the peace movement of the 1930s at the University of Minnesota. He eagerly took the Oxford Oath, promising there was no just reason that could motivate him to take up arms for his country. As a student leader he played a key role in a successful challenge of the ROTC requirement for all male students.
Sevareid's early journalism career took him to Paris and he witnessed first hand the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Fascism in Germany. His description of a 1938 visit to Germany at the height of Hitler's power is a masterful account of the totalitarian nature of Nazi rule. Readers will also be impressed with his insightful description of the fall of France to the Nazis in 1940.
At this point in his life Sevareid did something that few people ever do. He admited that his earlier isolationist and pacifist views were in error and embraced the notion that war was required to defeat Facism and its frontal assault on the most basic ideals of western civilization.
Sevareid's book was published in 1946--a time when most Americans were content to enjoy the fruits of victory after the enormous sacrifice that was made to win the war. But Sevareid was one of the first to write about the nagging issue of how peace would be maintained. His insights concerning the wartime conditions in China and the problems that would likely emerge after the war were clearly visionary.
Sevareid's skill as a writer makes this book an excellent tool for teaching about this era. As a professor I often use parts of his book in class to help students understand the attraction of isolationism in the period between the World Wars, or to enable them to understand the essence of Fascist political ideals.

4 out of 5 stars A novel of passion and destiny.......2006-10-14

Raised in the magnificent Sierras, lovely Tempest McClaren learned how to survive alone in the wild. Proud, fiery, innocent, she has everything to learn about the savage passions of civilization.

Three strong men, vastly different, were destined to teach her: one genteled her unruly spirit with his fierce, prtective love; another awakened her woman's body with his dark, insatiable desire; but the last, asking nothing, received in return a love as shining and boundless as the western skies...

            Not so Wild a Dream

A novel of passion and destiny as magnificent as the soaring mountains that were Tempest's true heritage...

5 out of 5 stars Another fabulous Francine Rivers book........2005-10-17

Very beautiful book. Romance with a high degree of realism. Mrs Rivers has always been able to potray human nature in all its nuances. This book was heading towards her Christian novels. She was feeling conflicted in her home and spiritual life and this book shows that conflict. She brings up issues of God and love and lust in new ways. The traditional bad boy hero is not treated the same way as in her past romances, or indeed in the romance novel genre. This is a thoughtful and complex romance novel, symbolic of Mrs Rivers transition into a Christian novelist.

This is the best Francine Rivers novel I have ever read. A story of the growth of the human spirit and learning to love, this novel is religious but not preachy like many of her later books.

                                              Book Description

When Bob Greene went home to central Ohio to be with his dying father, it set off a chain of events that led him to knowing his dad in a way he never had before—thanks to a quiet man who lived just a few miles away, a man who had changed the history of the world.

Greene's father—a soldier with an infantry division in World War II—often spoke of seeing the man around town. All but anonymous even in his own city, carefully maintaining his privacy, this man, Greene's father would point out to him, had "won the war." He was Paul Tibbets. At the age of twenty-nine, at the request of his country, Tibbets assembled a secret team of 1,800 American soldiers to carry out the single most violent act in the history of mankind. In 1945 Tibbets piloted a plane—which he called Enola Gay, after his mother—to the Japanese city of Hiroshima, where he dropped the atomic bomb.

On the morning after the last meal he ever ate with his father, Greene went to meet Tibbets. What developed was an unlikely friendship that allowed Greene to discover things about his father, and his father's generation of soldiers, that he never fully understood before.

Duty is the story of three lives connected by history, proximity, and blood; indeed, it is many stories, intimate and achingly personal as well as deeply historic. In one soldier's memory of a mission that transformed the world—and in a son's last attempt to grasp his father's ingrained sense of honor and duty—lies a powerful tribute to the ordinary heroes of an extraordinary time in American life.

What Greene came away with is found history and found poetry—a profoundly moving work that offers a vividly new perspective on responsibility, empathy, and love. It is an exploration of and response to the concept of duty as it once was and always should be: quiet and from the heart. On every page you can hear the whisper of a generation and its children bidding each other farewell.

Great book, I have grown to really like Bob Greene. I have bought many of his books and and reading them as fast as I can. This book brings the people who fought WWII for us and why they did it and makes them real. I am learning to really appreciate their sacrifices.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL MEMOIR AND TRIBUTE.......2005-02-18

This is a good work. As one disgruntled reviewer pointed out, this is not a history book, but rather a memoir and tribute from a son to his father and to one of the many heros of WWII. Having been raised by a father from that era, it is quite apparent to me that my relationship with my father was my no means isolated, but somewhat the norm. This work struck pretty close to home. Having spent over twenty years in the military myself, I can understand some of their thoughts, but even that cannot bridge the entire gap. Those guys looked at life differently than my generation. The author has approached the subject with great sensitivity and through his conversations with these men, I feel, has been able to understand not only them, but himself. I highly recommend this one to any father and any son. Well done Mr Greene.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute From a Son to His Father.......2003-03-26

Bob Greene has written a touching and emotion-filled book about two men who influenced the outcome of World War II; his own father and Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay. Greene's father served as an infantry soldier in Italy, while Tibbets was training his men in Wendover, Utah for a mission which would hopefully end the war.

Tibbets and Robert Greene, Sr. lived in the same town in Ohio, but had never met. Bob jr. writes about how his father would speak of Tibbets and call him "the man who won the war". While Bob jr. was back in Ohio to be with his dying father, he drew on his memories of Tibbets. Finally, Bob went to meet Tibbets. What occured was the beginning of an unlikely friendship that spanned a generation and allowed Bob to discover things about his father and his father's generation that he never understood before.

Bob found Tibbets to be a very honest and straight-forward man. There was no nonsense from him; everything was in plain terms. Tibbets talked frequently about his mission to Hiroshima on that fateful day in August, 1945. He said several times that he had no regrets for what he did and he always slept easy at night. Tibbets' stories enabled Bob to see that his father and many other men just like him also played large parts in winning the war. Tibbets never liked the phrase "the man who won the war". He was always quick to give credit to the soldiers as the real heroes, just like Robert sr.

Perhaps my favorite part of the book is the several chapters which deal with the trip to Branson, Missouri. Bob, Tibbets, Tom Ferebee (bombardier), and "Dutch" Van Kirk (navigator) took a trip to Branson over Memorial Day weekend and they were treated like conquering heroes by the public. But what impressed me was the candor and openness that these men spoke with. I learned a lot about the Hiroshima mission that I never knew before.

I found this book a little slow at the beginning, but it definitely picks up over the second half. Read this book and learn about the generation of men who won the war.

5 out of 5 stars A book about a hero and a father and how much are alike.......2003-02-18

A great book about a true hero and other's worthy of the same label. A very easy and engaging read. I highly recommend this book.

                                              2 out of 5 stars A disappointment ........2003-02-14

I have seen Bob Greene on some of the news stories on TV. I like his wit and sentiment. I was prepared for a great book on the great generation that produced his and my father. I was disappointed.
First, the book is disjointed. It goes from sentiment to sentiment, and then reverts back again. In his talks with General Paul Tidbitts, I thought he kept dwelling on the same emotions of a hard military decision. That decision was made long ago, and why keep hammering away at it. Bob, just get over it. The U.S. had to bomb Japan to spare the lives of American soldiers and sailors.
Another problem I have with this book is its lack of history. It tells a little of the history of his father, some of Tidbitts, and then a little on the Doolittle Raiders. Other than that, it is pure sentiment, repeated again and again. For a 300 page book, this could have been cut to 80 pages. I read this book, and it was a disappointment. If one wants to remember the Greatest Generation, read something from Ambrose.

Carefully edited and rewritten to retain the key coverage of the original text, Western Civilization: The Continuing Experiment, Brief, presents a strong chronological and political framework and seamlessly integrates the social and cultural forces that have shaped the western past. Two related main themes are pursued throughout: 1) Europe in relation to the rest of the world and non-Western influences, and 2) power in all its senses—public and private, economic, social, cultural, political, symbolic, and real.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) form a large, distinctive class of molecular inorganic compounds of unrivaled electronic versatility and structural variation, with impacts ranging from chemistry, catalysis, and materials science to biology, and medicine. This book covers the basic principles governing the structure, bonding and reactivity of these metal-oxygen cluster anions and the major developments in their molecular science.

The book comprises three sections. The first covers areas ranging from topological principles via synthesis and stability to reactivity in solution. It also focuses on the physical methods currently used to extract information on the molecular and electronic structures as well as the physical properties of these clusters. The second part reviews different types of POMs, focusing on those systems that currently impact other areas of interest, such as supramolecular chemistry, nanochemistry and molecular magnetism. The third section is devoted to POM-based materials and their applications and prospects in catalysis and materials science.

The early transition elements, especially vanadium, molybdenum, and tungsten, form a vast number of polyoxoanions with remarkable structures, unprecedented combinations of properties, and relevance to disciplines ranging from mathematics to medicine. Although the first examples of these substances were described in the mid-19th century, it is only within the last 20--30 years that the field has begun to receive the attention it deserves. This book contains 28 review chapters by leading investigators who participated in an international workshop held in Bielefeld in July 1992. It provides a survey of recent and current activity in this field - including new synthetic methods, and new structural types; topological analysis of polyhedral structures; discrete polyoxoanions as models for metal oxide lattices, magnetic interactions and domains; donor--acceptor and host--guest chemistry; organic and organometallic derivatives; mixed valence and electron transfer; homogeneous and heterogeneous redox and acid catalysis; photochemistry and photocatalysis; polyoxoanion-protein chemistry; antitumor and anti--HIV activity.
