An opening essay gives a brief overview of the history of architecture in the twentieth century, highlighting key developments. Among the architects included are Frank Lloyd Wright, Antoni Gaudí, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Gunnar Asplund, Charles and Ray Eames, Jorn Utzon, Louis Kahn, Eero Saarinen, Robert Venturi, Norman Foster, Mario Botta, Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, Daniel Libeskind, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, and many more. 150 color illustrations, 500 line drawings, CD-ROM.
Customer Reviews:
Good resource.......2007-03-08
This book delivers as its title promises, Plans, Sections, and Elevations. However, there are few (only one per building) pictures of the spaces in each building.
Key Buildings of the Twentieth Century.......2007-02-08
This is a very good reference that will appeal to practicing architects as well as students of architecture. The CD that comes with the book contains plans, elevations and sections of these key buildings and this is perhaps one of the main reasons for purchasing it. This 'strength' is also perhaps also one of the books major weeknesses as all drawings are in dxf and postscript formats, which means they are displayed in a single colour inside your CAD program and/or Photoshop. Given the size and complexity of some of the buildings in this book, having all lines as a single colour is at times very confusing for the eye. The dxf files do not contain any text, so it's a matter of looking at the drawings in both the book and on the screen at the same time; though the text in the book is also a bit on the 'light' side; and genreally you're often left to your own devices in determining the function of many rooms. All drawings are reasonably well executed but have an unfinished feel that I found quite annoying. That said, Key Buildings of the Twentieth Century is a valuable reference source for anyone wishing to study these key buildings. I don't think too many purchasers will be dissapointed with what they find inside its covers.
Not good enough.......2007-01-31
Not pretty enough for a coffee table book and definitely not informative enough as a resource for an architecture student.
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-24
I am a current architecture student in college and found this book to be a wondrful resource. So often, as students, we are urged to look at precedents to learn how other architects have solved problems, or designed for a certain climate, or what materials they used for different projects. This book provides a good insight to many famous projects by many different architects and is a good read. It also comes with scaled drawings of each project on a CD-ROM which is also a nice bonus.
Great Teaching Resource.......2005-06-01
This book is valuable for anyone in Architecture education at any level. The accompanying CD provides .DXF files that can be used by a variety of CAD/3D software programs.
Book Description
It's time to learn the basics of inking and two indispensable stroke types: strokes with tapered and even ends. Combining tapered lines with blunt, even lines allows for the production of balanced artwork. Applying discretion in using tapered and even lines when drawing figures will help you establish whether a character is good or bad.
Customer Reviews:
Real nice refrence book.......2006-01-27
This is a pretty decent refrence book to penning and like all How to draw manga books they also show you some basic drawing ( i dont understand why they do this since they already have a MHTDM volume for it ). What I loved about THIS MHTDM volume was the drawing style as well as the angles, UNLIKE the first volume the art style is more current and not 80s feel like the first one. Provides info on what type of pens and pencils should be used when penning as well as shading info.
fantabulous - not just for inking!.......2005-06-17
this book is just as excellent as the reviewer before me stated. however, there are also some other reasons to get this book. even though i plan to CG my sketches, i bought this books anyways. why, you ask? is has a surprisingly large selection of different body and head poses, especially downward and upward angles (which i find difficult). and many of the techniques shown can easily be adapted to digital inking as well (i.e. modulating lines, tapering, etc.) by all means, give this book serious consideration.
Much better than I expected.......2004-12-05
I've been drawing for about 15 years, 10 of them SERIOUSLY, I mean, with REAL dedication and study. 9 years ago, I discovered my love manga-style, and wanted to learn more. And every time I got stuck on the same point: I don't know how to ink. I have about seven books of the HTDM series now, and when I found out this one, I wanted to take the risk of ordering something that has no review. And I found the following:
-Yes, IT DOES TEACH YOU HOW TO INK, with description and examples of materials, techniques and all the stuff.
-It gives you good advice on texturing and shading, even to express the character's personality through inking. And to make your drawings look professional.
-It covers a lot of manga related subjects, from the inking point of view, like the use of special "codes" (sweat drops, X's and the kind).
Yup, it's not for the rookie artist, but you just need to know this: if you already do a good work with pencils, now you won't ruin it anymore on the ink process.
Summing up: buy it. You wont regret it (well, unless you're a skilled inker, and even then you might get some usefull advice).

Ghastly Beginning to Classic Comic Series.......2005-05-16
Volume 1 of the color Sundays Flying Buttress classics library presents the comic strip in which the Dragon Lady appeared for the first time.
Note that originally the Sunday pages represented a separate story-line from the daily strips, which are not included here. NBM reprinted the dailies in a separate collection which are also part of the Flying Buttress classics library.
Young Terry Lee accompanies his older friend Pat Ryan, who is looking for "true color" for "a story about China." The result is quite a colorful story as Terry and Pat are kidnapped by "the most notorious woman pirate in China," Lai Choi San aka the Dragon Lady of Bias Bay. The cruel beauty falls hard for Pat's Irish charm, but is less impressed by the pert Terry until he misidentifies her to save her from arrest. Back in Shanghai Pat and Terry reunite with George Webster "Connie" Confucius, who helps our heroes take a flight to the Gobi Desert. On board they meet pretty Sherry Granger before the plane is hijacked by an agent of bandit chief "the Skull." The action soon shift's from the Grangers'... oil mine? ...to the Dragon Lady's fortress at Hurricane Point. A U.S. battleship eventually sets the boys free but it takes more than that to stop the Dragon Lady, who returns to condemn the boys to hard labor. However the tables are turned in episode 46, "Yellow Peril on the Yellow River," when pirate Cap'n Blaze captures the entire party and puts the Dragon Lady to work cooking and cleaning. She winds up telling the story of her nickname to Connie.
Book Description
"I'm flat on my back on a couch that's too short in a windowless room in the bureau. I can't even sit at a computer, much less make a keyboard work. My arms and legs are shaking uncontrollably. Although I am only 53 years old, I have already been struggling with Parkinson's disease for seven years. And right now the disease is winning." So begins Joel Havemann's account of the insidious disease that is Parkinson's. Into his own story, Havemann weaves accessible explanations of how Parkinson's disrupts the brain's circuitry, how symptoms are managed through drugs and surgery, and how people cope with the disease's psychological challenges. The paperback edition brings the discussion of treatment options and research thoroughly up to date.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you need to know but don't want to know.......2005-09-24
This was by far the most comprehensive, detailed and informative book on Parkinson's disease I have read.
The author is an Early On Set Parkinson's patient and yet, with support, has been able to continue to raise his family and work full-time at his job as Editor of the Los Angeles Times.
He thoroughly investigates medications and other medical proceedures available and their benefits and disadvantages, which I found extremely helpful- certainly more information than I received from any physician.
Further, the author discusses, with amazing frankness, his own physical and mental challenges, which takes it beyond pure information to a story of courage and personal growth.
Parkinson's by deadline.......2004-03-16
Joel Havemann brings the journalist's practiced eye for detail, detachment and clarity of expression to the task of understanding, describing and coping with Parkinson's. He also allows his heart to speak and the result is a work that should be especially valuable to those who have themselves have recently received a Parkinson's diagnosis or who have a close relative or friend thus stationed.
The book offers clear and interestingly presented facts about the various drugs, treatments and hopeful research that become an integral part of having Parkinson's, as well as the historical and public policy context in which those elements have evolved in the centuries since the disease was first identified. There is just the right mix of facts, opinion and sometimes barely concealed disgust in Havemann's treatment of these matters.
As valuable as those chapters are, I think many will find Havemann's account of his personal odyssey and that of his family to be the more valuable aspect of his book. He is unstinting in his descriptions of the physical and mental effects of the disease and frank about his occasional failures to deal with those effects as effectively as he would like. He also spares little in telling of his fears about the disease's potential progress and what it could mean for him and his family.
I can't think of a better preparation for confronting the many challenges and crises that accompany the arrival of Parkinson's in the life of an individual and family. A Life Shaken is strongly recommended.
An intelligent look at PD.......2002-12-01
Other books about PD scared the heck out of me, but Havemann's sense of humor and indomitable spirit have changed my perspective. I'm not afraid anymore. Thank you Joel. The book is honest and straightforward. He describes what happens to a brain with PD so clearly that I finally understand it!
A story of Parkinson's that teaches along the way.......2002-10-13
Author Joel Havemann weaves his own story of living with this progressive neurological disease with a clear and carefully researched explanation that ranges from symptoms and drugs to challenges and the outlook for a cure. "For an adventure it is - not one that I would have chosen, but an adventure all the same." Mr. Havemann, an editor with the Washington bureau of the Los Angeles Times, helps us look at the human brain and its intricate yet magnificent operation, and the disastrous consequences of even the simplest misfire. He has created an excellent reference guide for caregiver, family member and patient alike that affirms the paradox of our own frustrations and hopes for the future. We feel Mr. Havemann's determination to keep going for his family, anger at the debilitating symptoms, and belief that the scientific and medical communities will deliver an answer.
Wonderfully touching, Expertly written.......2002-07-18
Mr. Havemann provides us with an incredibly personal view into Parkinson's disease. His wit, candor, and superb writing style draws the reader into his story to such a degree that it is difficult to disengage. While telling his story he concurrently entertains and educates the reader as to where medicine stands with regard to research and current treatment, and how individuals cope. I'm looking forward to his next work.

Customer Reviews:
Not for everyone.......2002-10-02
This book is small and easy to read. However it is not for everyone. Personally I read books to gain as much knowledge about a subject as I possible can. There are some good points in here. However, I "personally" disagree with some of the advice given. On Pg 70 the author suggests "If ice cream is your weak spot choose low-fat,not low sugar versions. If you want to pig out now and again-it's much better to do it on jelly beans and hard candies rather than chocolate and potatoe chips." I understand that sugar gives energy but for low blood sugar folks and diabetics this isn't really good advice. I personally feel like I am going to pass out when I eat any of that stuff, but I a feel full and okay when I eat a piece of cheese, meat, some salad, or an egg. I have 2 other books in this series but I think I will be previewing any other books in this series in the library (it needs my support anyway) first before purchasing any more
Book Description
Sugar has often been considered one of the first things to avoid when trying to eat healthily, but it is no longer the villain it was once thought to be. In fact, recent scientific findings indicate that overly restricting sugar from your diet may actually be detrimental to your health. In The New Glucose Revolution Pocket Guide to Sugar and Energy, the world's leading experts on the glycemic index-an easy-to-understand ranking of foods based on their effects on blood glucose levels-clearly explain how sugar affects our bodies and which types of sugars are best to eat. Along with showing how a moderate amount of sugar-rich foods can be made part of a balanced and nutritious diet, they dispel common myths and answer the most frequently asked questions about sugar. Also included is accessible information on a variety of sugar-related topics, such as blood sugar control, dental health, moods, mental performance, and weight loss. In addition, the book also provides menu plans for a week's worth of meals. Though consuming excessive amounts of sugar will never be a good idea, this handy pocket guide explains how having a sweet tooth can work to your advantage.

Book Description
During WWII the mission of the Navy was, first and foremost, 'holding the line' against the German surface fleet, preventing it from disrupting the vital transatlantic sea-lanes or escorting an invasion force to Britain. The importance of holding the line cannot be over-emphasised but it is often overlooked as there was no decisive battle on the seas surrounding Britain in WWII. This work is a strategic and operational history of the Home Fleet. It examines the role of the home fleet in allied strategy and how well the home fleet carried out the missions assigned to it within the framework of that strategy.
Customer Reviews:
A First Class History.......2007-06-05
The Home Fleet of the Royal Navy was an important formation during World War II and James Levy tells the story of its history well. Levy reminds his readers of something that is quite easy to forget: naval operations were a critical element in determining the outcome of this war. The Royal Navy could not win the war, but they sure could lose it; if Germany had gained control of the waters surrounding Britain there may or may not have been an invasion of the United Kingdom, but there sure would have never been a D-Day.
This fleet played a key role in protecting Britain and blocking the German advance. Although he is an American, Levy knows the Royal Navy quite well. He earned his history Ph.D. in Wales and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Naval matters can be quite confusing for land lubbers, but his text is accessible to those of us with a limited understanding of the sea. His prose is strong and engaging. He clearly admires the commanders and men of the Home Fleet and honors them for their work without glorifying the brutality of war. He is less complimentary of the Admiralty, which often kept intervening in tactical and operational matters that were domain of the Fleet Commanders-in-Chief. He also is willing to go after sacred cows and shows that Winston Churchill both as First Lord of the Admiralty and then as Prime Minister made a number of strategic mistakes that complicated the mission of the Home Fleet.
Although he is focused on this one formation, Levy takes into account a number of factors such as other conflicting strategic demands, economics, and the pace of technological innovation. While the history of staff work is hardly the sexiest of topics, he offers gripping accounts of a whole slew of surface engagements that the Home Fleet fought against the German Navy. Although none of them were as famous or as big as Jutland or Trafalger, they were important. The Germans in many cases had better ships with more armor, speed and firepower, but the Royal Navy had 400 years of tradition that emphasized aggressive leadership. Despite its material shortcomings, the British dominated the Germans time and time again and never allowed them to challenge their dominance of the high seas.
OK, if nobody else wants to chime in..........2005-12-01
Well, this is the author, and after waiting two years for someone to chime in on my book, I'll tell you what I think. First, despite earlier efforts to correct this, I'm not a lecturer at Kings College, London. Professor Philpott, who edited this series, is alive and well and teaching there. I'm at Hofstra University on Long Island and teach in the School for University Studies and the History Department. Second, the book is a rather good look at the operations of the Home Fleet from the perspective of its four Commanders-in-Chief: Charles Forbes, Jack Tovey, Bruce Fraser, and Henry Moore. It is moderately hostile to Winston Churchill, who has a puffed up reputation as something of a brilliant strategist--he was not, but liked to pretend he was. This "former naval person" was no such thing; he was a cavalry subaltern and never really stopped thinking like one. So, if you like ships and naval battles, and are agnostic about Churchill, you should enjoy this solid little book.
