4 out of 5 stars The down and dirty on alternative home building.......2007-07-18

Most of the housing being built today is shoddy. Volume homebuilding corporations breeze into town, rape the land, slap up substandard cardboard-quality "houses" on postage stamp-sized lots and charge hundreds of thousands of dollars per unit. Many of these contractors get run out of the state, change their corporate name and then move on the next urban sprawl boom.

If you're sick and tired of seeing beehive neighborhoods spring up in your town with siding walls you can put your fist through, do yourself a favor and take this crash course on alternative homebuilding. This book will give you an excellent starting place to learn about how you can build your own high quality, inexpensive home with low environmental impact.

There is a lot of detail in this book on the methods presented. The "butt and pass" log home building chapter alone is worth 20 times the cost of the book. You won't easily find that information anywhere else outside of taking a log home building class from the Log Home Builders Association in Monroe, Washington, which is the only place I know of that teaches that method.

4 out of 5 stars How integrated design works with planning.......2006-04-27

The house of your dreams needn't be unaffordable: integrated design and construction methods can help in the planning process and can result in much savings, and LIVING HOMES: INTEGRATED DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION is the perfect guide to that process. Chapters cover everything from calculating energy usage and efficiency to considering water supply and waste system options, bonding walls, and more. Black and white photos throughout reinforce instructions on how to cut construction costs along the way. LIVING HOMES deserves ongoing recommendation as an excellent choice for any who would pay attention to cost-efficient design.

Touches on a variety of "green" living homes. Not too many specifics on each type of construction. Good for an overview of options available. Not for the builder who has a particular form of construction already in mind.Good for starting the research process of green living.

5 out of 5 stars A gold mine of construction specifics .......2005-06-06

Most would-be home builders believe a dream house would cost a fortune to construct from scratch: that isn't true, maintains author Elpel, who built his dream house with his wife. The planning of such a home is the key - and is the key to Living Homes: Integrated Design & Construction. Chapters cover energy efficiency concerns, home construction basics, and water supply and management with an eye to revealing how design and construction can work together to fit into both a budget and a dream plan. From strawbale walls to interior finishing, Living Homes provides a gold mine of construction specifics for any neophyte builder.

2 out of 5 stars big problems with technical information.......2004-10-29

This book has a lot of big ideas, but is very weak on technical details. The author repeatedly uses phrases like, "We tried this, but it didn't work very well" without offering a follow up of something that DOES work. Maybe some of the suggestions would work better in an arid climate, but around here many of his suggestions are recipes for mold growth, rot and indoor air quality problems. Also, much of what is suggested is in violation of building codes, such as using a single wall heat exchanger in a solar water heating system where the heat exchange takes place between glycol-based antifreeze and potable water. Use the book for ideas, but please get your technical information somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Designing an energy-efficient result.......2001-11-11

Thomas Elpel's Living Homes is an invaluable reference on the concept of integrated design and construction that will appeal to anyone remodeling their home as well as to new home builders, though the latter group will be more interested in the ground-up building approach offered her. From the planning process to designing an energy-efficient result, Living Homes provides construction and how-to tips the home do-it-yourselfer will appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Great description of slipform stonewall building.......2001-08-17

I was really excited to see this book appear. A classic "Build Your Own Stone House" is now out of print, and I thought there was nothing to replace it. Since I am a bookerseller of alternative housebuilding books I was looking for another resource on stone building. Elpel does a very good job of covering all the bases for the prospective owner builder. He allows the reader to envision how home siting, use of passive solar, water needs and energy use will affect the final home for years to come. He covers plumbing, electric, septic, even making a solar hot water heater. But the best part for me was the description of the "terra Tiles" earthen floor method. This is good stuff! Chapters on straw bale and log home building allow the reader to compare various methods. Also coverage of masonry stove building, overall Elpel provides a real understanding of "how to", and an easy to read book.

In Anatomy of a Doll master dollmaker Susanna Oroyan gave us a definitive work on cloth dollmaking. In Fantastic Figures she concentrates on unique dolls made from polymer and paper clays, especially those that combine sculpted clay with cloth bodies. Emphasizing innovation rather than imitation, she provides lengthy and detailed information on the clays themselves; on sculpting the head, hands, feet, and legs; on finishing medium and painting methods; and on constructing the body, clothes, hair, accessories, and even display stands and tableau settings. The appendix discusses doll clubs and organizations and offers advice from other doll experts. Numerous line drawings and diagrams supplement the text, but the best feature is the set of exquisite color photographs of dolls made by 60 professional doll artists, some of whose creations are almost frightening in their startling realism.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-06-17

I really enjoyed this book, and the author is really a master at her craft. Some things I still don't understand and need clarification on, and for a real novice, I'm putting this aside for a while as it seems a bit more than I can handle at the moment. I don't understand the sizing guidelines, and just wish someone would print a sizing chart. (Cannot find one anywhere) It would help so much. The rest I can read and practice. All this "1/12th" or "1/16th", I'm still trying to figure out if that is the size of the picture in comparison to the real figure or what it really means. I really missed something and otherwise, I would recommend it because she is an extremely good author and doll maker. I know I would also buy more from her if I ever get going on this!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Figures: Ideas & Techniques Using the New Clays.......2006-09-16

This book is more for an intermediate to advanced sculptor.

There are many lovely color photographs from exceptional doll artists, but most of the "learning techniques" are in black and white with a lot of text.

A beginning sculptor could learn from this book, it's an excellent tool, just not much of the "hand holding" through every step like other books of this type.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and feel it is worth having in your library.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but I wish all of the pictures were in color........2005-12-10

This book is a great book... but, I am only giving it 4 stars because not all of the pictures of the dolls are in color. Many are in black and white. I have been making dolls for a couple of years and her instructions are great, but probably not for the beginnner. It is interesting to see the different mediums for OOAK dolls. She provides a lot of examples using different mediums.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Book, But For The Advanced Artist........2004-06-18

The book "Fantastic Figures: Ideas & Techniques Using the New Clays," by Susanna Oroyan is a great book on advanced techniques in clay. However, for a beginner like me it was a bit overwhelming. So I am placing it on my book shelf and hope to be skilled enough to use it some day. As the dolls in it are great examples of OOAKmanship!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!.......2003-03-27

This book is wonderful, it covers every aspect of dollmaking. If this is your first time making a doll or your 100th you will find new and helpful information in this book. Definatly add this book to your doll making library.

The beginning of the story of the continuing misadventures of Dog, and his farmer Wal Footrot. Not to mention a cat called Horse, a magpie called Pew, and a few scruffy relatives.

Add in a girlfriend, the local rugby team, and some dodgy neighbours, and plenty of amusing times to be had.

Footrot Flats is a portion of New Zealand created by Mr. Ball. The characters are the people and animals that live on the Sheep Ranches in the area. The main character is one of the dogs on the ranch. Mr. Ball has a keen sense of humor that shows through his characters. Mr. Ball does an excellent job of making living on a farm in New Zealand very funny. Something I wouldn't have thought would be possible. Young children probably won't get most of the gags, but for everyone else, it is a great book.

      Book Description

Eleanor Vincent raised her two daughters, Maya and Meghan, virtually as a single-parent while fighting her way toward a writing career. Maya, the eldest, was a high-spirited and gifted young woman. As a toddler Maya was an angelic tow-head, full of life and curiosity. Eleanor tells the story of how Maya went careening down a hill on her tricycle only to tumble onto the ground, then spring back up and do it again. As a teenager, Maya was energetic and possessed a strong streak of independence. She butted heads with her mother as she strove to find her path in life. But one thing was always clear, the close and connected relationship between Eleanor and Maya. They were like best friends or sisters, but always also mother and daughter.

At age 19, Maya mounted a horse bareback as a dare and in a crushing cantilever fall, was left in a coma from which she would never recover. Eleanor’s life was turned upside down as she struggled to make the painful decision about Maya’s fate. Ultimately she chose to donate Maya’s organs. Maya’s heart was given to a man with a young family who needed a new heart to live. As time went by, Eleanor contacted and struck up a friendship with the heart recipient and his family.

A story about the unique and complicated relationship between mothers and daughters, Swimming with Maya celebrates how that relationship continues to exist beyond the grave. In vivid language, Eleanor Vincent illuminates the kind of courage, creativity, faith, and sheer tenacity it takes to find one’s balance after such an overwhelming blow.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars At times this book was hard to read.......2007-08-29

At times this book was hard to read..the author takes us back to her daughter's horseback riding accident--as I read about it I felt like I was there with her daughter when it happend. A good read for anyone that is 'letting there child go' in terms of growing up as well as 'letting their child go' in terms of 'pulling the plug' An important memoir to read.

      5 out of 5 stars Not a Gentle Memoir.......2006-04-29

In one respect, "Swimming" is about organ donation, but that feature of the story would not be as meaningful without all of the back story of the people involved, particularly the mother and daughter at the heart of the story, and especially Ms. Vincent. The back story is related with such searing honesty and absence of sentimentality, that I could not put the book down.

Eleanor Vincent leaves no question in the reader's mind about WHO made that decision to donate her daughter's organs. It is a heroic gesture under any circumstances. But it also made human through the understanding we are given of the nature of the relationship between this mother and daughter, their history, and the place they had come to in their lives. I cried in several places, not because of the obvious sadness of the story, but because the writing unsettled with its "realness."

I came away from this book feeling that I had been allowed to take a long, moving look into the personal mythology of another human being, with its many radiances and confused shadings. Memoir always offers the possibility of that, but doesn't always deliver. Ms. Vincent delivers.

      5 out of 5 stars Psychological journey.......2005-08-16

I picked up this book because the picture on the cover looks like my own daughter. When I read the back notes and learned that she was dead, I quickly put it back down. I didn't want to read about Eleanor Vincent's devastating loss. For some reason, though, I felt compelled to try to comprehend her experience.

What I found was indeed distressing, but inspirational at the same time. The book is in many ways a postmortem tribute to Vincent's daughter and an exploration of the healing effects of organ donation. Taken in its entirety, however, this book is really about a journey through the process of healing from a lifetime of psychological traumas. The extreme grief over her daughter's sudden death and the struggle to cope with it lead Vincent down buried paths of pain going all the way back to her childhood. She emerges transformed. She lost her daughter, but therein found herself, and we can't help but applaud her success.

4 out of 5 stars Maya was my Cousin.......2005-07-14

My Aunt Ellie sent me a copy of the book when it was finished, that was April of 2004. I finally finished just yesterday July 12th,2005. I never anticipated that it would describe in detail the harrowing wait in that hospital for those 4 days that we all endured. I had to put the book down for the year to regain the strength to read on.
Being extremely close with Maya and having her be a huge part of my childhood, I thought there would be more about Maya's life as part of "Dan's" family. "Dan" is my Uncle, Maya's step-father and Maya was as connected to us as an actual blood relative of our family.
Although this is much more of a biography rather then letting people really grasp who Maya was, it is a good book.

      5 out of 5 stars A inspirational story.......2004-10-27

I loved this book. Keep a box of tissues handy. Well written and riveting, this book gets too close in describing the tragic loss of a child.

      Kudos to Ms. Vincent

            Book Description

Why am I always tired? Why can't I sleep at night? Why do I suffer from jetlag? We all have a body clock, a biological structure that controls how we feel, our mental and physical performance, and whether we are active or asleep. This is nature's response to our rhythmic environment, dominated by day and night. Though the body clock normally adjusts us to daytime activity and night time sleep, it can go wrong or be tricked by lifestyle changes. This can result in jetlag, some forms of insomnia and even depression. Keeping in time with your body clock provides clear and accessible advice on how to live with, and not against, your body clock. In a clear and accessible style, it explains how the body clock works, how and why it can work against you, and the measures you can take to optimise your feeling of health and wellbeing. It also explains the role of the body clock in illness, and how an understanding of this can increase your feeling of health. An essential book for anyone who wants to better understand their body and optimise their feeling of health and wellbeing.

            Book Description

An enthralling memoir of WWII adventure: fighter pilot, fugitive in Paris, Gestapo prisoner, and ultimately a great escape artist, Bill Ashs story is unforgettable. From the lean days of Depression-era Texas to the thrill of being one of the few who flew Spitfires, from a death-defying crash landing in Occupied France to capture and torture by the Gestapo, imprisonment in the Great Escape camp, Stalag Luft III, and years spent becoming a serial escape artist, this is the wartime memoir of a true hero, a real-life Cooler King. Recounted in a wonderfully honest and self-deprecating voice, William Ashs Under the Wire is a classic in the makinga riveting story of bravery by one of the last of his generation. QUOTES Ashs book is full of such wit, and held together with the sort of wry adventure story that begs to be immortalized on film as a cross between Tom Jones and The Great Escape. Metro News Toronto (4 of 5 stars) [A] remarkable story. Toronto Star

5 out of 5 stars Funny and inspiring.......2006-07-04

The subject matter for this book sounds grim: Ash starts off talking about life in the Great Depression, and ends up talking about his experiences being thrown into (and escaping out of) German POW camps. In fact, though, this is one of the most thrilling, funny, suspenseful and inspiring books I've read in some time. Ash's optimism, indomitable spirit, and wonderful sense of humor got him through the war, and they're all on display on just about every page.

Ash is also a keen observer--a trait that no doubt helped him pull off his daring escapes, and one that enables him to bring the characters he met along the way to vivid life.

In short, "Under The Wire" reads like a great thriller. The fact that it's all true makes it all the more gripping and inspiring.

            5 out of 5 stars Real-Life Great Escape.......2006-05-19

"Under The Wire" by William Ash (with Brendan Foley). Sub-titled, "The World War II Adventures Of A Legendary Escape Artist And `Cooler King'". St. Martin's Press, New York 2005.

William Ash was raised in Depression-Era Texas, where he learned the hard way that life is rough. Those lessons stood him in good stead when he became an expert escape artist from the POW camps of Nazi Germany. As he said, on page 22, his "twilight actives" prepared him by: "...being an unwelcome nonpaying passenger, learning how to avoid the attention of guard dogs or the authorities, sharing food and political discussions with men just as badly off as myself , and sometimes just learning to laugh in the face of everything the world could throw at me." He calls his younger days as "An Apprenticeship In Escapology".

Building on the first two chapters, he then relates the story of his decision to fly for the RAF, his aviation training, first in Canada, and then in the actual combat zone in England during the Blitz. Because of his flying for the RAF, he had to renounce his American citizenship. There are vivid descriptions of London under the bombs, with destruction and fire seemingly everywhere. Then comes the chapter that changes everything: "The Day Of Reckoning". (page 85): "I cut my engine, since it was clearly full of holes and not doing much good".

Shot down over occupied France, William Ash is helped by some French farmers, who struggle with his high school French but help him to find the underground resistance. He is, however, captured in Paris in June 1942, but not before he was able to enjoy the city of Paris as any tourist would do. The bulk of the book, from page 101 (the capture) to page 307 (his return to London) deals with his experiences with German Prisoner Of War system. The Gestapo threatens to shot him as a spy, as he is in civilian clothes, etc. He is "rescued" from the Gestapo by the Luftwaffe, as the German Air Force claimed all air force type POWs as their responsibility. Ash then relates his travels from camp to camp, through bombed out German cities, and finally arriving in a POW camp about as far East as the Reich went. His escape attempts are recorded in detail and his punishments, each time he was re-captured, made him, as the book flap recounts, the "real-life `cooler king'". This book documents a real-life "Great Escape" story.

5 out of 5 stars IMPOSSIBLE TO PUT DOWN - MUST-READ!.......2005-10-04

When I began reading UNDER THE WIRE, I expected a story of heroic "derring-do", recalled with a sort of misty, stiff-upper lipped nostalgia by a Grand Lion in the winter of his remarkable life.

Instead, I got so, so much more.

Bill Ash's life is remarkable by anyone's yardstick. From his earliest childhood in Depression-era Texas, he was a hero, ready and eager to take on any bully. While America watched as Europe fell to a maniacal Hitler, he made a decision to personally take on the biggest bully in modern history.

Remarkable? Brave? Courageous? Yes, all of these adjectives describe the heroic life of Bill Ash.

But his life, and his story -- told so extraordinarily well by Ash and his co-writer, Brendan Foley -- is also funny, human and a lesson in living one's life with heart and a true moral compass.

There is as much Huck Finn and Jack Kerouac in Ash's war stories, as there is John Wayne.

Like all great tales of history, UNDER THE WIRE does more than offer adventure after adventure (and WOW, what adventures Bill had!)

The book offers a sense of the times, a sense of the politics, insights into the dangers, the choices, the cat-and-mouse existence of a Prisoner of War.

Bill played cat-and-mouse with the Third Reich, and did it brilliantly.

And I have never read an adventure story with so much genuine humor!

UNDER THE WIRE is a glorious tribute to the sort of person we long for, but never really see anymore: a true hero.

And it's a great, entertaining read.

                  Book Description

Cold Wars tells the story of the common cold, the most widespread disease of all. From ancient Egypt to the space age, colds have plagued mankind, and many attempts have been made to find a cure. Today, we spend millions of pounds on remedies and businesses lose millions of pounds through employee sickness - but are we any closer to conquering the cold? In the aftermath of the Second World War, a concerted effort was made in the UK to resolve the scientific conundrum of the common cold. A Common Cold Unit was established near Salisbury, making use of some rather primitive facilities provided by the American Red Cross, and for nearly 50 years was part of the British medical establishment. Much of the research was done on volunteers, who came in large numbers to the CCU to spend days in isolation while scientists attempted to give them a cold. Many eminent scientists, including JAmes Lovelock, were part of the attempt to understand the common cold. This book begins with a brief history of colds through the centuries, describing what earlier generations believed and the strange treatments they tried. That the cold was caused by a virus was only uncovered at the beginning of the last century. The authors vividly describe the establishment of the Common Cold Unit, and its work in uncovering the causes and transmission of the cold and analysing possible treatments. Finally, they assess the progress made in recent years in understanding the psychological aspects of colds, and the latest research on prevention and cures. Cold Wars offers a fascinating account of an eccentric, but effective, attempt to unravel the mysteries of the common cold.
