Book Description

Since its inception at the end of the 1960s, loft living has generated an entire movement dedicated to the recovery of old, industrial spaces. Today, the loft is becoming more accessible to the general public, as its original definition expands to include a variety of open-plan living spaces. With this current expansion, there is a growing diversity in the way architects treat the characteristic white walls, exposed metal, glass screens, and expansive hard floors.

As Lofts DesignSource illustrates, individual expression is the key. Experimentation with distribution, color, texture, materials, and finishes can result in personalized spaces and urban sanctuaries that reflect the most individual of architectural designs. With projects ranging from New York to Paris and everywhere in between, this title provides readers with a comprehensive examination of the exciting changes taking place in today's loft environment. And with more than 600 full-color illustrations, Lofts DesignSource is sure to become an integral part of every library.

4 out of 5 stars small pics inside.......2006-10-29

Definitively not 5 star material just because size of the book, it's very heavy and sametime small. Hard to flip thru cause its bulky feel. Overall photography is good but some extra photographs are small and you really have to concentrate to see "what's inside the small pics". Selection of lofts are in my opinion also good, interesting places but i think i've seen some of them allready in other loft books (must contain classic lofts almost every book does nowadays).

It's nice addition to my shelf and will look good on there. Cover is beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Visual Feast..........2005-08-14

This book is a visual feast for the eyes, with countess examples of creative material usage. Containing only breif decriptive captions, this is not the book for you if you are interested in the literary asspect of design research! However, if you are a visual learner, as I am, what this book lacks in words, it more than makes up for in pictures. I had a hard time laying the book down!

3 out of 5 stars Hard read.......2007-07-03

I wonder how many people who buy a book like this, actually read it. It took me six months before I had the courage. And now that I have - and have three more volumes to go - I admit that I would have preferred a somewhat more pedestrian approch, perhaps - I should say - a somewhat more Anglosaxon (or American) approach. Because this book is definitely written in the German tradition, which goes especially for the several general introductions to the volume.
Short as they are, they are hard to read and a lot is taken for granted. I am an art lover, am well at home in the nineteenth century, but am less acquainted with the art of the middle ages and early renaissance, whereas on the other hand I know the general history of the period reasonably well. And although I have already visited many of the churches and chapels, frescoes and mosaics, described in the book, I still find parts of the introductory texts hard to follow. Commenting on fhe frescoes in the Assisi upper church, one of the highlights in the volume, Poeschke writes: "As for their innovate artistic qualities in general, these are already seen in the unified overall conception into the built architecture, in part by illusionistic means, and extend to the well balanced pictorial strucure, the clearly defined volumes and body language of the figures, a heightened presence of everything being represented, and an extension and refinement of the color spectrum. More than ever before, a compositional calculus asserts itself in these paintings (...)." (p.64) Which may all be very true of course, but which is also very dull, and in a way also very abstract. And whereas the layout of plates, diagrams and figures is cristalclear, I find the texts about them a lot less orderly.
Why not, before every church, a small historical introduction, and than a running and systematic textual commentary on the plates? And why not, for instance, systematically add the text of Bonaventura, on which the frescoes are based? This book has a strange way of taking its reader seriously, and at the same time not seriously enough. Where `s the editor? Where Poeschke does give an extended description of a fresco, he does so in an excellent way. But why not systematically combine the texts on the plates with the plates itself? I don't think this is really a quibble. It is a bit of a waste to produce a great looking book, without really thinking of the reader. It is easy to leaf through this book and say: "hey, this looks great", which it does, but I found reading it not always a pleasure.
But then, these are also wonderfull volumes, one has to admit. The quality of the photographs is excellent, the extensive coverage of many of the Italian medieval churches and chapels is a pleasure to behold. One may whine now and then at the tedious style, there is also an immense amount of knowledge assembled here. Would' nt it be great to have a very small pocketversion of an improved version of this book, just to take along to Italy?

5 out of 5 stars Magnifico!.......2006-01-11

The latest in the set of now four brilliant works on the frescoes of the Italian renaissance, "The Age of Giotto" is a masterwork that is worthy of a museum. From the Giotto, Simon Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Cimabue wall paintings in the fascinating double church in Assisi, to the lesser known (and nearly disappeared) work by Cavallini in Santa Cecilia en Trastevere, the commentary is enlightening and the photography stunning. You will not find a better book on the early examples of this wonderful art form than this one. See the other three books - "The Early Renaissance", "The Flowering of the Renaissance" and "The High Renaissance and Mannerism" - for the compete, magnificent look at 200 years of fresco masterpieces.

5 out of 5 stars Il Primo.......2005-11-09

One word describes this book - brilliant! This is the best book on the market for early Italian frescoes with a happy marriage of the finest photography and finest text. Congratulations and thanks.

Book Description

In describing his beloved land, the late Irish short story writer Sean O'Faolain wrote: "There is some alchemy of climate in Ireland that bedews the countryside with an unmistakable personality: it is in the softness of color, the mobility of the light, the gentleness with which sound caresses the ear." In this heartwarming photographic portrait, award-winning photographer Jill Freedman captures that softness, mobility, and gentleness in the Irish landscape and in the character of its people.

With texts by best-selling Irish American authors Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) and Malachy McCourt (A Monk Swimming), Ireland Ever commemorates the traditional life of Ireland in bygone days, just as the modern world began to creep up on it. Freedman celebrates the beauty of the land, the warmth of her people, the simplicity of the old ways, the humor and conviviality, the sharp wit and black moods, and the kindness of the "old country." Beautifully designed and produced, this elegant gift book is a love poem to that wild and passionate beauty that is Ireland ever. AUTHOR BIO: Jill Freedman is a highly respected documentary photographer whose award-winning work is included in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Bibliothèque Nationale. She lives in East Hampton, New York.

4 out of 5 stars Ireland Ever.......2007-05-14

I first saw this book at my daughter's house. She lived in Ireland for years and I traveled there to visit. This book is unique in that it captures unstaged views of Irish life. The photos presnt activities I have obvserved but not recorded. The photos set-forth ungarded moments in many different aspects of the society. The photos present the intereactions and actions of people that portrays the lives they live in the countryside and the cities. It is a most ungaurded and sensative portayal of a unique society.

4 out of 5 stars Ireland, beautiful and human.......2005-11-14

I am a great fan of Frank McCourt, he has lit the fire in me to read again. Although his contribution to this book is little more than a foreword, it is Ireland through his eyes, and through the eyes of the people who adore it.
The images are amazing, from the quiet fields to the pubs, it shows Ireland in all it's lush culture. It is a book that photographers can admire, and people of Irish descent can hold close to their hearts. Although it is expensive (its only downfall), it is more than worth buying, to sit on a coffee table. Where it will never gather dust, because you will always crack it open to see a favorite picture.

5 out of 5 stars The Old Country as seen through Jill Freedman's poetic lense.......2005-05-19

I had never heard of Jill Freedman before I bought this book, but I'm glad I did. She captures a world that is part fun, part sad, and all authentic. From scenes of children to musicians to pint drinkers, the black and white photography is key to viewing a world that is endearing to so many. Although I love Frank McCourt and felt he wrote a very nice introduction, I couldn't help but notice the dig he attempted towards the Catholic Church, still a vital component of life in Ireland. However, this book is wonderful, and I recommend it to anyone who is a Freedman or Ireland fan.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Poetic Images of Ireland from Jill Freedman.......2005-02-13

Gutsy acclaimed documentary photographer Jill Freedman is probably best known for her splendid documentary photographs of New York City police officers and civil rights demonstrations in Washington, DC. So it may surprise people who are unfamiliar with her work that she is also a superb documentary photographer of the Irish people and landscape. Her images show much empathy for both the people and landscape of Ireland, capturing both the honesty of its inhabitants and the beauty of its rural countryside. This book is a collection of the best images of her Irish oeuvre, accompanied by text written by the brothers McCourt, old friends of hers from their days at the Lion's Head, a famous, now departed, Greenwich Village, New York City tavern frequented by many distinguished Irish and Irish-American writers and musicians.

I searched for this book for a long time. It contains many images of Lucy in her little psychiatric help booth, and gets to the core of her personality with chapters focusing on Lucy's bossiness, crabbiness and imperfection. Additional hands on goodies make it the perfect Lucy book for any age.

    Book Description

Peter Mayle may have spent a year in Provence, but Harriet Welty Rochefort writes from the wise perspective of one who has spent more than twenty years living among the French. From a small town in Iowa to the City of Light, Harriet has done what so many of dream of one day doing-she picked up and moved to France. But it has not been twenty years of fun and games; Harriet has endured her share of cultural bumps, bruises, and psychic adjustments along the way. In French Toast, she shares her hard-earned wisdom and does as much as one woman can to demystify the French. She makes sense of their ever-so-French thoughts on food, money, sex, love, marriage, manners, schools, style, and much more. She investigates such delicate matters as how to eat asparagus, how to approach Parisian women, how to speak to merchants, how to drive, and, most important, how to make a seven-course meal in a silk blouse without an apron! Harriet's first-person account offers both a helpful reality check and a lot of very funny moments.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fun, funny, and oh so right on the mark.......2007-10-15

I am also an American woman living in Paris. Before I picked up this book I thought it was going to be a typical, steroetype reinforcing, superficial romp down the Champs-Elysees. Not at all! Its really funny, and works as much as a memoir as an introduction to the culture. My experiences in France are not identical to that of the author because my circumstances (marriage, neighborhood, age) are not the same. However, everything she says rings true. Ah, France! I am hoping there will be a sequel!

    5 out of 5 stars Cross-cultural Conflicts.......2007-09-23

I am neither American nor French. As an Asian woman, I lived in the United States for more than a decade, and I have been living in France for exactly one decade. I had been married to an American and now to a European. With my former training in cross-cultural psychotherapy, and having lived and worked with people of various racial backgrounds, I have a great interest in inter-cultural relationships.

I had read French Toast the first time in 1999, shortly after moving to France, and I was quite amused at the author's descriptions of the French. I read the book again very recently and her account has confirmed my own observations of both the Americans and the French. She said that she had only a "bird eye's view" of the French during those past twenty years. To me, her bird eye's view was remarkable. What had struck me the most when I first arrived in the United States more than thirty years ago was the "individual" versus the "family'. The author has lived through and felt that experience. As an American woman living in France and being married to a Frenchman, she talked about the cultural gap getting bigger and not smaller, and how deeply cultural differences run below the surface. I myself can certainly identify with those dilemmas.

The author has a fabulous sense of humor. Very few books addressing cultural conflicts can be written with such tolerance. What I really admire in her book is her ability to laugh at herself and at her own mistakes. Very few of us can do that.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding French behavior, whether they are tourists or planning to be long-term residents in this country. Reading this book is both entertaining and enlightening. I also think the book cover design is quite charming.

5 out of 5 stars The Frenchness of Toast.......2007-09-16

French Toast by Harriet Welty Rochefort

This book has three virtues. Setting out to explain `the maddening mysteries of the French' to people from other cultures- and especially to their diametric opposites the Americans - it rests on decades of immersion. The author, who emerged into French life after growing up in small-town Iowa, has a French husband, passport, children, and household. She also works there. This depth of familiarity is an advance on that gained by most anthropologists engaged with similar cultural puzzles. Secondly, she has a sense of humour, an absolute requirement for such a brave venture, where the natives are not always friendly, and maps not always clear. Thirdly, she has a most engaging style of writing. This rests on knowing what needs to be explained, and bringing the topics alive with vivid anecdotes - almost all of which - although related with humour and tolerance, are nevertheless underpinned by a profound coming to terms with difference, and a search for the harmonies and things to celebrate. French Toast is an elegant couterbalance to the simple-mindedness of freedom fries.

5 out of 5 stars What living in France is really like.......2007-09-15

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either interested in France or who will be living there and wants to become assimilated. In a delightful way Ms. Rochefort shows how she learned to deal with the unexpected cultural differences she encountered during her marriage to a Parisian. She laughs at her naivite and unpreparedness for French customs and shows how she struggled to master French cooking, to understand French manners, and to enjoy hectic city living without giving up her love of her own country.

Ms. Rochefort shows that while it's one thing to be enchanted the city of lights, it's a differnt thing to know how to live there, as a Parisian. Her lighthearted style is misleading, since it is clear that the adaptation to her new life was not always as easy as she makes it seem.

5 out of 5 stars ... Or, How to cook stew in a silk blouse.......2007-09-11

A friend recently gave me FRENCH TOAST. Instead of picking and choosing between the tempting chapter titles - a toss up between The French and Money and The French and Sex - I read the book straight through.
The book demystifies the French in a very humorous but real way. The reality check comes from the author's French husband who is interviewed throughout the book - thus giving a French twist and insight into an American's impressions.
You'll learn things like how to make a real French beef and carrot stew. You'll marvel with the author at a French woman's ease making a 5-course meal in a skirt, high heels, sans apron! And you'll gleefully chuckle reading about to-wash or not-to-wash pre-sex.
A toast to someone who treats cultural differences with lightness and humor!

Dr. Giler has created the next best tool to having her in your home as a guide and expert. -Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., author of "If Life is a Game, These are the Rules"

5 out of 5 stars Kidýs Guide to Making Friends.......2000-05-29

When a friend recommended "Socially ADDept," Dr. Janet Z. Giler's manual of social skills for children with ADHD, I accepted the suggestion with some reluctance. Like every other parent with an ADHD kid, I'm already drowning in pedagogical advice. If raising one of these children were as simple as "love and logic" or "parenting without punishment" these kids wouldn't be any harder to raise than all the others. Pedagogical slogans sell books, but they don't work with bundles of hyperactivity like my Alexander, who's incorrigible social skills have made it difficult to find a baby-sitter willing to spend an evening with him, let alone a teacher willing to address his academics.

While many schools have programs to improve reading, writing, and arithmetic, they lack any formal curriculum for the fourth "R"- arguably the most important one- social refinement. Enter Giler, who's manual for parents of children with ADHD and/or learning disabilities brings a refreshingly clear, simple, step-by-step, common sense approach to teaching social skills. Those basic, self-evident skills that most of us learn by osmosis, but completely elude ADHD kids like my Alexander.

Giler develops eight, concise lesson plans that guide parents in teaching kids how to develop congenial relations with peers, teachers and siblings. From proper greetings to managing anger, "Socially ADDept" deciphers the complex rules of none-verbal language into friendly, bite-sized morsels that kids can understand. Somewhat like a "How Things Work" of behavior, untangling tricky situations like joining an ongoing game, in simple step-by-step fashion. Step 1) "Say `hi.' 2) Pay attention to see if you get a friendly response. 3) Make a comment about the game. Then wait until you get a friendly response before asking, 4) `Can I play?'"

I read through Giler's chapter on "active" listening with the doubting bias of a parent who's been-there, done that. Just come to our house for a visit, and you'll hear the mantra "Listen to me!" repeated with prickly frustration. Our son, Alexander, "hears" what we're saying, but doesn't give a slightest hint of interest. We reprimand him, and he replies with exasperation, "I am listening!" His ears work and his mind process all the input. But he ignores the body language that closes the "feedback loop," as Giler describes it, letting us know we're being heard.

With "Socially ADDept" in hand I walked into Alexander's room. He sat on the floor with an origami book, folding a sheet of blue paper into a peacock. As usual, he didn't even look up at me when I told him about the "friendship" lessons I wanted us try. Following Giler's suggestion, I asked him to list his best qualities; I knew this question would get him talking. While Alexander described himself with great earnestness, I mirrored his inattentive stile of listing. Alexander's voice grew louder and his tone more anxious. I just kept looking through my book, as if in another world. Then when I could hear his frustration peaking I turned toward him and asked, "Do you think I am listening?" Of course, the answer was "no." But now I had his attention. So I told him I had a book that, given a chance, could help him become more popular. He liked this idea. We worked through the seven page chapter on "Conversational Skills," learning how to keep eye contact, lean forward slightly, nod, make guttural sounds indicating agreement, and ask appropriate questions. To my surprise, Alexander enjoyed the lesson and asked me to leave the book in his room. For him, the simple facts of none verbal behavior were a mystery revealed.

The most common social errors made by ADHD children are, misreading body language, using "tone" inappropriately, violating other's physical boundaries, perseverating on topics, and failing to show interest in others. Giler helps parents and kids come to terms these social errors by teaching ten basic social skills: 1) listening and responding, 2) smiling and asking questions, 3) greeting others, 4) giving complements, 5) understanding body language and vocal tones, 6) understanding personal space and appropriate touching, 7) joining an ongoing group, 8) sharing and cooperating, 9) ignoring teasing, and 10) managing anger. My son particularly liked the section on the "Social Behaviors of Popular Children."

People can compensate for lacking performance skills, like poor spelling, but "there is no way to compensate for poor social skills," Giler explains. Without basic social graces kids fail. In "Socially ADDept," the elementary rules of interaction, like turn-taking and understanding personal space, are introduced and explored in simple, kid-friendly manner. While not a children's book, this will be an addition to your library your kids will appreciate. You'll appreciate Giler's straightforward, practical style, providing clear examples, new skills, and no guilt trips.

          Book Description

"This book is about helping youngsters with learning disabilities hold onto their dreams. It is also about helping their mothers and fathers negotiate the maze of challenges that so often leaves parents and students alike feeling overwhelmed and helpless."

Writing with warmth and compassion Corinne Smith and Lisa Strick explain the causes, identification, and treatment of learning disabilities and present a wealth of practical strategies for helping youngsters become successful both in and out of the classroom:

          * Recognizing a learning problem that won't be "outgrown"

          * Designing an effective educational program that targets a student's strengths (not one that focuses only on weaknesses)

          * Negotiating effectively for what your child needs at school

          * Avoiding dead-end practices that rob students of motivation and self-esteem

          * Managing problem behaviors at home

          * Planning ahead for college and career

Enriched throughout with personal stories, case histories, and tips from parents who have "been there," Learning Disabilities: A to Z is an easy-to-use, up-to-the-minute resource for parents and professionals who work with children and adolescents.

For any parent facing the possibility or reality that their child has learning problems this is the book I would recommend. I cannot think of a question it did not answer or a facit of the topic it did not cover. It helped me enormously - I am on my second read and this time I am taking notes.

          5 out of 5 stars Lifesaver.......2001-05-21

When my daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability I was lost at how to deal with the school system. The first time we did her IEP I did not know what to expect. There weren't any parent advocates for us at the time of her IEP. This book prepared me on how to be an advocate for my child. I educated myself about her needs from the book and had alot of confidence when meeting with the school system to plan her education for the following year. Actually I went to the meeting knowing what to ask for and how to ask for it. It worked out that the items I asked for she received. Now we constantly use the book as a reference guide when we are unsure of something. This book is good right up into adulthood when your child is choosing higher education or out in the workforce. It was a lifesaver for us and a great learning tool!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for the parents of LD child!.......2000-04-11

I borrowed this book from the library and then I'm here now to buy it for my own. This book goes through each type of disability, how they are identified and will guide you through the maze of school testing, IEP's, and how to be your child's advocate to make sure they are getting everything they should be getting from their education! Great detail on emotional growth, planning for the future and assessment measures!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful to any parent of an LD child........1999-10-29

I recommended this book to the LD Specialist at my childs school who couldn't thank me enough for finding this book so she has a sound resource to suggest to parents of LD children. This book not only helps you learn to identify your childs learning disabilities or learning difficulties, but also to understand them. Also, it provides the information you need to talk with the school knowledgeably about testing and LD services. It helps you understand what your part of this process should be and tells you what you need to know to successfully participate in the process. It gives you strategies your child can use in everyday life situations that will help him/her learn. And it helps you with information about the social and emotional needs of your growing child. I no longer feel helpless in dealing with this issue. This book has given me the knowledge, but also very importantly, concrete ways to help my child be as successful as can be.

            Book Description

In the United States today, there are approximately 4 million children with a disability, many of whom are interested in--and capable of--learning a musical instrument, but are unable to find an instructor willing to take them on as students. Over the past decade, Karen Z. Kowalski, a pediatric occupational therapist and professional piano instructor, has combined OT applications with music theory to design a program that teaches piano to individuals with special needs--from the first private session to the, yes, concert hall. "Playing It Their Way" is based on her popular series of lectures designed to educate music instructors on the rewards of teaching this special--and still untapped--population of students. Using a lively mix of anecdotes and practical instruction, Kowalski offers tried-and-true methods (conventional and otherwise) for teaching music to special-needs students. Conditions such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorders and autism are presented in an easy-to-understand format and geared specifically to music teachers. "Playing It Their Way" inspires instructors as well as parents to realize the musical potential in every disabled child.

As an educator, I am impressed with the ability of the author to explain how various types of disabilities affect the ability of a learning diabled person to learn. It is done in a way that is understandable to the general population. Her dedication to aid citizens with special needs to reach their potential is apparent. Her techniques for teaching individuals with special needs are simple and easily implemented. I would highly recommend this book for music teachers and parents of a person with special needs.

              Book Description

The 13th century was a time of change for knights in England. They were faced with rising costs and increasing demands on their time for local government because of their very status in society, until knighthood itself was sometimes avoided. This period saw as well the development of the tournament from the wild team events of the early years of the century to the single jousts with blunt lance. Campaign life in the 13th century also embraced several theatres of war including the baronial revolt against King John, the Barons' Wars of Simon de Montfort, and the Welsh and Scottish wars of Edward I. This title also covers the use and development of arms, armour, costume and other equipment.

What is truely impressive is that what Evon Vogt presented here is so understated, so much like what a dinner party is like in Chiapas, or Q-Roo, or the Peten, that we can feel what the writers of the Popul Vuh felt in their hearts!
