mixed bag.......2006-11-18

On one hand I liked seeing step by step how an old run down house was saved and restored (be kind to your handy man and all contractors-- they're heroes) but I really didn't like how Martha kept reminding the readers in what seemed to be every chapter how tacky the previous owner was. That didn't seem particularly kind and it was not necessary to the success of the book.

As a recent purchaser of an old house, I really enjoyed the first few sections of this book and thought it might really be helpful for our remodel. However, it quickly turned into a big spend-fest, as other reviews have mentioned. Get this only for the nice pictures and commentary, certainly don't expect advice on how to do anything yourself.

The Photos and the home are beautiful! Maybe not good for ideas to restore, but the federal colonial farmhouse was done in wonderful taste and style. I reccomend it to anyone who loves old homes. It's my favorite book. How nice!

A diary of a major renovation.......2001-09-24

This book chronicles the renovation/restoration that Martha Stewart completed on a historic New England farmhouse. It is very specific about many of the tasks that she completed, and gives some general how-to information (how to hire a contractor, create a landscape design, etc). I was disappointed because I was looking for ideas to restore and renovate my "new old house" and didn't really find much inspiration here. Much of the decorating revolved around painting murals and designs on the floor, which is something that I don't plan on doing. If you are planning a major renovation project to a large, historic home, this book might be a good starting place but I wouldn't rely on it for all of my information. Although it didn't really help me with my specific plans, it was an interesting, sometimes sketchy, read.

Nice ideas, but too expensive.......1997-04-08

This book is to home improvement, what a Rolls Royce is to the automobile world. Everything is done in grand style, for instance, the fences in her gardens are all hand made. She uses genuine copperleaf to spruce up a flight of stairs that no one will ever see, due to location. This book is big, literally, bold, beautiful and luscious in every way, except practicality

I love pen and ink painting as it looks delicate. It takes the same amount of time to do as an oil painting but has a different look. This book gives me more choices to pick from and adds more depth with the texture lessons.

I find that this book explains procedures excellently and items are illustrated with good follow through steps making it very easy to follow. I have learnt some real shortcuts to problem areas I had.

The most recent in my collection!.......2003-05-12

I admit it: I am hooked on books by Claudia Nice. Pen & ink can be quite an intense media. Claudia Nice simplifies the techniques and conveys the instruction as only as master can, and does it in her trademark informal, friendly manner. Another aspect I love is her use of watercolor to bring her works to life. The reader gets the treat of two complimentary media in one book: pen & ink and watercolor.
For the beginner, I might recommend starting with her other books before attempting the more advanced exercises and techniques in Painting Country Gardens. The perfect introduction is Sketching Your Favorite Subjects in Pen & Ink, followed by Painting with Watercolor, Pen & Ink, and then perhaps Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor.
There are more technical books on pen & ink technique for advanced students, some intimidatingly so; but for the beginning to intermediate artist, no series of books is as valuable for developing sound technique. And certainly no other books are as intimate, casual, and just plain fun as those by Claudia Nice.

A Monty Python-esque Adventure Through Time.......2002-02-09

Professor Phineas B. Fuddle has a simple enough idea: Introduce modern technology to past civilizations, and the present will be retroactively upgraded. So the loopy Prof. builds a time machine, and heads back into history, to make the World a better place....

BUT...instead of making a modern-day utopia, he creates a chaotic Hell-on-Earth; He's messed with the past so much, that the present has become a war-zone where anarchy reigns. Plus, at Midnight tonight, it'll all be moot: the time-stream will collapse due to the stress of the changes Fuddle has made. Two men, one of them Fuddle's Nephew, must follow his trail through the time-stream, and bring Fuddle back to the present (London, 1902) before midnight....they are Humanity's only hope....

I thought the book started slow, but by the end I was really into it. There are some parts that are just laugh-out-loud funny...I especially enjoyed Suliman, the intelligent Mandrill.

One of the big mysteries concerning the book is this: Boaz Yakin is a fairly well-known name among movie-lovers. (He Directed, among others, Remember The Titans...)Why didn't DC Comics give the book some publicity touting Yakin's Hollywood background? This is the kind of thing that could potentially bring new readers into the field....A big blunder, in my book....

On the art front, Erez Yakin provides some REALLY detailed work. Just check out some of the double-page spreads, particularly the part where Angus & McKee arrive in "Hell"....I don't know why I've never seen his art before, but I hope he decides to do some more comics. While not as flashy as some "Flavor of the Month" Artists, he delivers some first-rate STORYTELLING; his art and page layout is innovative, yet easy to follow. I hope the Yakin brothers decide to do some more comic work together...maybe even Fuddle II...?

I read Outward Leg several years ago and it inspired me to read just about all of his other books. His no nonsense, slighly irreverent style appeals to me as well as the fact that he has a great sense of humanity. A good book and a good read.

What Tristan Jones lacks in great writing skills he makes up for with great story telling and sheer guts. In 1985, as the Soviet Union was quickly approaching its high water, mark he threw caution to the wind and began a tumultuous journey that would take him through the badlands of the Iron Curtain. Plunging up the freezing Rhine in his ocean going tri-hulled yacht, wintering in Germany, and losing his American crew of two to homesickness and better job opportunities were bad enough for this one legged sailor, but Jones had an objective that he wouldn't put aside lightly. He took on a fresh crew of one, a young German boy, and set off to conquer the Danube and Eastern Europe as the first person to transnavigate Europe in an ocean going tri-hull. Do not waste your money on this book. I bought this book hoping I'd learn everything about the most powerful elite armed forces of all time. Instead I did not even receive the basic information about the modern american armed forces. The author briefly touched upon parts of the american armed forces which he felt like describing. Each description lasted no more than one page or so. The rest of the contents of each chapter described armed forces of the past. Some of the forces described were not even American. This was a lame history lesson not an accurate description of the modern elite forces of America. The author was more interested in history and bad humour. Do yourselves a favour and don't buy the book. You all would be better off looking it up on wikipedia. This author really sucks bigtime! The modern american armed forces deserves more respect. It is the most sophisticated and powerful force of all time. I am not even an american, I'm a canadian. If you do not believe my review, just look at how many people bought this book in the first place because of the title. Now look at how many people are selling it through amazon.
