confusing.......2006-08-23
This text is confusing, contains several errors and overall quite useless for the classroom setting.
Aubin's Mastering ADT very thorough and easy to follow.......2004-03-19
Paul's book, after working through the Comprehensive Tutorial by H. Edward Goldberg, is like reading Proust in English for an English as a first language speaker compared to reading Proust in French for an English as a first language speaker. The steps are small enough that a person who is new to the program can follow along without difficulty. Plus, Paul's accessibility is invaluable.
Great resource and learning tool.
The reviewer who said there must be a better book out there somewhere might consider writing one for the office in which he/she works so as to have one to recommend for new employees.
I, too, would be interested in reviewing the new attempt.
Help at Last for the CADaphobes!.......2004-03-19
I'm an architect who's worked with CAD for 10 years...got dragged into using it, literally kicking and screaming!! I needed 3D capabilities to stay competitive, but the thought of learning another CAD program struck terror in the very marrow of my bones! I took took hours and hours of classroom and on-line classes to try to learn ADT and VIZRender, and I feel like it was money up in smoke. Out of sheer desperation I bought Aubin's book, and have found it to be one of the....no, THE clearest, most straightforward CAD guide I've ever, ever, EVER read!!Starting with the basics, and guiding the reader through step-by-step tutorials in plain, non-technical language, Aubin has developed a guide that even a technophobe can clearly understand.
I'd give the book a full 5-star, but it's a little lacking in trouble shooting. If things don't work out the way they're supposed to, it would be helpful to have some suggestions on what might be wrong.
After only one day of working through the guide, I could design a simple building in 3-D. After a full week, the sunshine was pouring through the windows. Well worth the money.
Could have used an editor and some better examples........2004-02-11
After working with various versions of AutoCad for the last 7 years, this was my first introduction to Architectural Desktop. I have worked my way through this book over the last week. It is quite possibly the LEAST-well-written Cad book I have ever used. Paragraphs are repeated, steps are skipped over, words are missing in the middle of sentences.
The tutorials give you the false impression that you are accomplishing something, without teaching you how to apply the concepts to the actual projects you will be required to work on in the real world. One man in my office described the tutorials this way: "It's like 'This Old House', Bob takes the camera crew into the bathroom as Norm finishes caulking the tub. Bob turns to the camera and tells you that now you too can remodel your bathroom."
There has to be a better book out there on this program. I just don't know what it is. Don't spend your money on this, take your chances on some other book. Best of Luck.
Best Resource.......2004-01-01
When I have a question, I go to the Aubin book first. The help menu and the official Autodesk books never have as much of what I need.

Perfect for the Student or Professional.......2007-05-16
A great publication that touches upon all aspects of a career as a forensic artist. This book gives excellent incite to one whom wishes to persue the career or the professional using Taylor's knowledge as a reference tool. Also an excellent reference for anyone studying visual anatomy as well.
Skull beneath the skin.......2007-02-01
This is an excellent text book for the forensic artist. It gives a step by step instruction in recreating the face from the skull. It is also a good reference for writers interested in creating characters who have this sort of knowledge in crime solving.
A must have.......2007-01-18
This is the Bible of Forensic Art. I interviewed numerous Forensic Artists and researched many workshops ALL of which reccommended this book...I was not disappointed.
Don't leave home without it..........2007-01-12
Forensic Art and Illustration is completely indispensible to anyone serious about learning any aspect of forensic art, and also to the merely curious. I bought it because I had long been interested in facial reconstruction, and wanted to try it on my own. This book made the process remarkably easy, detailing how to build a stand to mount the skull on, lengths and locations of the tissue depth markers, and proper application of the clay, all accompanied by clear and easy-to-follow photos of Betty Pat. Gatliff's excellent work. There is also a very comprehensive section on two-dimensional facial reconstruction (largely Ms. Taylor's own innovation) that is worth the price of admission in itself.
The book is highly approachable, and accessible to anyone with even the vaguest interest in the subject. Every facet of forensic art (including its history) is covered in brilliant detail, so that the book serves as a truly practical manual as well as a fascinating read. Forensic Art and Illustration really is the gold standard in the field. Don't be caught without a copy in your forensic library.
Forensic Art and Illustration.......2006-11-10
This is an excellent book. It lives up to its reputation as the gold standard for its class.
Book Description
The four-volume “Science of Everyday Things” set illustrates the importance of scientific and mathematical principles through their use in everyday life. Each volume focuses on a specific scientific discipline — biology, chemistry, earth sciences and physics — offering an in-depth understanding of each discipline and its theories, creating a sense of real-life relevance for students and those not scientifically-inclined, and including interesting facts and details relating to each principle. The fascinating entries offer explanations of concepts using a straightforward, step-by-step approach, and present theories in their everyday applications. Some examples of the entries covered include how osmosis is used in dehydrating fruit; Charles' law and the chemical reaction that sets off an airbag; and how algorithms are used to figure out the NCAA playoff tournaments.
Book Description
In 1996, photographer Bob Thall--walking to his car after completing some work in downtown Chicago--was stopped by something. "I noticed this strange view down an alley," he later wrote. "It wasn't the type of photograph I was doing that year, but the scene stopped me. I had one sheet of film left and thought, 'Oh, what the hell,' and took the picture."
Thall didn't print that picture for over a year. He had just published the highly-praised The Perfect City, an investigation of the sweeping changes in downtown Chicago over a twenty-year period--and he was still working on The New American Village, a look at the new edge city around O'Hare Airport that stands in such contrast to the urbanity of downtown. That single alley photograph, however, would stay with him, and eventually it would inspire the project that led to this, his third book: City Spaces is an exploration of the terrain of Chicago's alleys, where Thall finds remnants of the old city that he, and many other Chicagoans, once found so compelling.
What these photographs transcribe are deep urban slits, afterthoughts to the gleaming modernist fronts of buildings. As Thall writes, "Investigating these spaces reminded me of my earlier sense of the city as a mysterious landscape to explore. My history as a Chicagoan, my history as a photographer, the history of the city, and, in a small way, the history of photography--without any plan or anticipation, these photographs brought these histories together for me." City Spaces will be a welcome addition to those interested in fine art photography, architecture, Chicago, and the urban scene--and will reinforce Bob Thall's presence as a leading artist and spokesperson for the city he loves.
Customer Reviews:
my photo mentor!.......2005-08-05
Bob Thall happens to have been my Photo/Darkroom 1 teacher in college back in the late 80s. This gentleman is the bomb! Hey, I already got my grades, so I have absolutely nothing to gain here! Going into the class, I had, to put it mildly, a very poor eye for photography. I mean, anyone can use a camera. However Bob enabled me to acquire a real appreciation for photography as an art form, to the extent that I am still taking photographs, almost every day of my life, literally! In fact, I recommend to every serious student that I meet (I am still taking classes!) to enroll in a Photo/Darkroom 1 class with Bob Thall. He has helped imbue me with an artistic sense and keen eye that is helpful in any art class or artistic related endeavor. OK now about the book: It rocks! While some consider his work dry (he said it himself almost 20 years ago), if you take a close and careful look at every aspect of his work including content, composition, shooting, printing, etc., you may see what I see... Who else could make a photograph of a Chicago alley look so darn beautiful?!
meticulous revelations, gorgeous results.......2003-09-02
Bob Thall has been making marvelous photographic books from marvelous big-camera photographs for more than a decade. He's also been systematically investigating the city of Chicago as a test case for the 21st century city. PERFECT CITY began by looking at the creative destruction of an architecturally significant and economically vibrant American urban downtown; THE NEW AMERICAN VILLAGE then looked at the new "urbanism" of what Joel Garreau has called the Edge Cities that have sprung up along the interstates and tollroads at a safe distance from the old metropolis. Now with CITY SPACES, he's tackling the newest phenomenon of American urbanism: the nostalgic return of downtowns as places to work, live, and be entertained. It's Thall's quirky intelligence at work that a collection of photographs of alleys could become a book about the resurgence of the old city, but that's what he shows us-- the way the city's encrustations of history, its graffiti, old signs, strange corners, odd spaces, and once-vibrant functional loading docks have become objects of nostalgic reverie, and Thall offers to be our guide in this visual treasure-hunt. This is a photographer of decidedly modernist sentiments. The play of subtle light on worn brick, the way mirror glass recedes deceptively into a non-existent, yet absurdly convincing surreal skyscape, the delight you feel as things line up into sensuous arrays when you stand precisely THERE and tilt your head like THIS and bend your knees oh-so-slightly: these are the matters of this book. Such visual sleight-of-sight requires superb printing to work in a book; luckily the Icelandic printers have labored with Nordic determination and the results are astonishing: blacks as smooth as velvet but still retaining a sense of detailed dark space; silvery sheens to steel, walls that crumble as you look at them.

A Celebration of Irish and Filipino Culture.......2004-05-22
"Like Tommy, every multi-cultural child can come to understand that they are even more special and enriched by their dual heritage."
Natalie Gonzales-Sullaway wrote Sungka and Smiling Irish Eyes for her son Patrick. Even the pictures in the story were modeled on her own family. Natalie wanted to write the book for kids everywhere who are living in a multi-cultural family. One of the main ideas in this book is that a loving family comes in all cultures and colors.
The story begins in a contemporary setting and as Tommy is feeding his pet lizard, he hears a loud crashing sound outside. After looking out the window he sees his Filipino-born grandparents arriving and they are carrying boxes of toys, dishes and books.
Tommy's father is Irish-American and his mother is Filipino-American. Tommy is just starting to learn about his cultural heritage and during dinner he learns about the sumptuous meals made by Filipino and Irish peoples.
Tommy's grandmother brings a game called "Sungka" but no one has time to play the game because they are all getting ready for dinner. By the end of the evening Tommy finally gets to play more games of Sungka and also learns about Irish festivals and folklore. Some of the items discussed are illustrated above the characters.
There are pictures of the family eating dinner and communicating with each other throughout the house. This book will more than likely cause children to become very curious about their own cultural heritage.
I've found very few books about multicultural families and when I've given this type of book away to a family the response is always: "We can never find these types of stories." So, Natalie is on the right path here and I hope she creates an entire series of books for children in multiracial families.

This period has seen the development of guided missiles for both air-to-air and ground-attack roles. Covers aircraft installations for all nations and an evaluation of combat use, including a comprehensive table of gun installations in combat aircraft and helicopters, comparative drawings of the principal service weapons and data tables of the guns and ammunition.

"Flying Guns" Breaks Important New Ground.......2006-02-24
Anthony Williams and Emmanuel Gustin break important new ground with "Flying Guns of World War II." This book is the first comprehensive look at aircraft armament during the Second World War, an aspect that is more often than not neglected by aircraft historians. The book begins with a discussion of some of the conventions of aircraft armament and the basics of how most machine guns, cannons, and their ammunition work. It also discusses the history of aircraft armament from the end of World War I, including the development of rifle caliber machine guns, heavy machine guns, and cannons, with a focus on the World War II period.
The book offers a wealth of photographs, technical specifications, and charts. The appendices at the back include a lots of additional information including gun drawings, technical specifications, and a glossary of key terms.
The key drawback to this book is that the authors take a significant amount of space discussing the different World War II aircraft types, and the armament packages they carried. This is somewhat redundant, however, as this information can just as easily be found in any one of a number of other books on World War II aircraft. Perhaps the authors could have better used this space by going into the history of the guns themselves including who designed them and what differentiated guns of one model from another.
Nevertheless Williams and Gustin have produced an excellent book that should be required reading for World War II aviation buffs, and will hopefully spur much more writing and research into this field.
Excellent.......2006-02-09
A military aircraft's armament is no less important then the aircraft it self, but it is a facet of aerial warfare often overlooked. Flying Guns of World War II does a very comprehensive job in covering the guns and cannons used by the combat aircraft of the second world war. And even though the book is very technically oriented it's readily accessible style of writing makes it a pleasant read. I fully recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic.
Only Book of its Kind And Very Good.......2005-03-08
The movies, from Tora, Tora, Tora; to the Battle of Britain; to Twelve O'Clock High pretty well tell the story. All kinds of fancy airplanes have been designed and built to get a gun pointed at the enemy.
World War II was fought with a set of airplanes that fit into a very small segment of time. The last biplanes were built about 1940, and the first jets about 1944. But World War II was fought (largely) with piston engined monoplanes armed with machine guns.
The British studies showed that they were primarily fighting unarmored aircraft that would be best attacked with rifle caliber machine gune. The Americans were in love with their .50 caliber machine guns. The Germans, faced with the problem of shooting down the heavily armed American bombers favored heavier cannon that could fire explosive shells.
This is the story of the guns used by the air forces fighting World War II. It includes the technical aspects as well as some of the theory, or perhaps politics is a better word, behind the thinking of the various air forces.
A unique work for the weapons affectionado.
Excellent Reference........2004-07-19
This book sets a standard that would be hard to beat. The authors know their subject and the production is superb. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the field covered, and to others as an example of how a book should look.
Customer Reviews:
A very disappointing effort.......2007-06-09
Commager is considered an eminent historian of America. This was the first full length book that I have ever read by him and I expected much more than I received. The subtitle suggests that it is Commager's view of the philosophy of the American people from 1880 until the time of its printing nearly 60 years ago. I was expecting to read profound and thought provoking ideas that would bend my own impressions about what we Americans are intellectually made up of.
Instead of that, Commager provided a very ivory tower view of our philosophy. His style was particularly annoying in that he dropped names of writers, jurists and artists routinely while comparing their products to an individual he is expounding on. Then he drops it. Should the reader be intimately knowledgeable of the hundreds of people he casually mentions the book may have been more valuable. As it is however, Commager simply mentions some sort of kinship between the thoughts of several individuals and fails to shore up any connection with an explanation. Often this would propel the reader to do some investigation of their own but it was far too numerous and simply not interesting enough to spend the time doing it.
Commager wrote this book prior to the common usage of the term Post Modernism. He certainly employed that style in writing this book. This included the use of terminology that required an explanation that was not given; a misuse of scientific principles (Newtonian political decisions for example) and attempts to make Darwinian evolution a philosophy. Commager also spent a chapter lauding Dadaists in his chapter on the "Cult of the Irrational".
Commager came highly recommended to me and I was looking forward to something far more useful than this near nonsense.
Our forgotten Progressive-era intellectuals.......2005-01-11
Commager's thesis here is pretty simple: The American character is animated by pragmatic concerns rather than by abstract thoughts. Commager reckons that the Civil War and the economic disasters of the 1890s provided the kindling for a blaze of intellectual, national self-examination in the following decades. Abstract theories were out. Pragmatic solutions were in. This thesis sound familiar? His style is "New History" all the way. Not so many dates and numbers and summaries of important events, but lots of narrative discussion of intellectuals, their ideas, and the inter-relation of those ideas. In that way, this book resembles Lovejoy's THE GREAT CHAIN OF BEING, in style if not in substance.
Though most of the characters Commager discusses here have generally been relegated to the academic dustbin--replaced by trendy postmodernism and deconstruction--they deserve our renewed attention for their contribution to American intellectual maturity. This is really the first generation of Americans, according to the author, which accepted the challenge to write an assessment of the American charater and condition from within, rather than simply relying on the interpretations of somewhat biased foreigners (i.e. Crevecouer, de Tocqueville and Bryce). Commager wants to capture the image of America through American eyes rather than through the filter of European culture cringe so apparent in the works of ante-bellum historians like Adams and Parkman.
Read it to know what Americans thought of themselves after the trauma of the Civil War and the economic crisis of 1893. And, by all means, read Menand's THE METAPHYSICAL CLUB as well.
Very exciting, if selective, read on who we are!.......2003-03-06
There are, in general, two types of American history that one can be fascinated by. The physical (wars, homesteading, etc,) and the intellectual (creation of law, American philosophy, etc.) The second type of history is decidedly the lesser studied of the two. There have been few good books on America's intellectual tradition(s). Commager's is one.
Commager's 'thesis' is that pragmatism or variants thereof (not always explicitly so) is our nations motto. DeTocqueville, shortly after the founding, commented on American emphasis on practicality over the more European abstractions. Commager elequently backs up his thesis and gives us 450 pages of reading pleasure in the process.
The book is selective in that it tends to focus on the scientific and poltical reactions to social darwinism (which caught on like wildfire in the states, second only to the backlash it inspired). If I had to guess the thinker Commager most admires in his book, it would be Lester Ward, who developed devestating arguments against social darwinism, heightening the importance of environment to evolutionary thought. Commager is even more selective when, while rightly championing these developments, he doesn't talk much about its more extreme and ridiculous incantation in todays cultural relativism. So many subjects, so few trees!
Anyhow, if you are interested in exploring pragmatism, the rise of evolutionary environmentalism or American radicalism in politics (which is deeply connected to the previous two) then this is a great book.
Fundamental.......2002-11-02
The most dificult challenge is to understand what's going on, while it's going on (is George W. really President?). This book is a piece of work and well worth the effort. Make sure you have a good encyclopedia handy, time enough to stop and lookup the references, and the energy to stick with it. If so you will gain a wonderful perspective on who we are, how we got here, and the fundamental aspect of change in America. Go for it!

Not "paperback" version but study guide.......2003-09-03
What is being called the "paperback" version of A Short History of Western Civilization here is in actuality not the paperback version at all but another paperback book entitled "A Study Guide to Accompany A Short History of Western Civilization from the 1600's." Richard Sullivan is not the author of THIS book. On the order form and on the packing slip it says "A Short History of Western Civilization" but it is not! If what you want is a study guide for half of this book then go ahead and order it. If you really want the entire Short History of Western Civilization book, then order the HARDCOVER version.
Wrong Book Reviewed.......2002-01-24
Dear Amazon.Com,
I wrote the one star book review for this book which is currently on file. The review is incorrect and should be deleted or modified. I ordered "A Short History of Western Civilization (paperback), but received "A Short History History of Western Civilization since 1600 (paperback)". I wrote the review and then discovered that I had the wrong book. I have returned the book for a refund and reordered the hardback book of the same title. You might want to note that the paperback version is a Study Guide and not a History Book. If you wish you can move the review to the correct book or delete the entry. Thank you
A Study Guide, Not a History.......2001-12-25
A Short History of Western Civilization (paperback) is a study guide and not a history book. It's great if a study guide, complete with questions, is what you are seeking. The volume was written by Joyce E. Salisbury, not Richard Sullivan as listed in the web site and published in 1994, not 1993. It's Volume Two: since the year 1600, and not a complete guide to the hardback book. The guide is about 128 pages and includes some maps. I give it one star because a study guide is not what I'm seeking.
European History as a Diet of Facts at its best.......2001-01-29
Combined with interesting lectures that built upon the content of this book has the potential to creat a great semester of Western Civilization. I found the book to be a comfortable read, that provided the necessary facts and stories to provoke interest in the topics covered in each chapter. It also provides a fulfilling interpretation of historical events and the culture shaping effects of those events in history, as well as detailing the people behind the decisions. Its a comprehensive collection of the Western Civilization.
If you get your hands on this text, read it if you are interested.
Excellent work for students and general readers alike.......2000-04-10
This book traces the history of the western world, from ancient Egypt up to the fall of the Berlin wall.
The book is divided into periods of history, then further subdivided into sections about that period. You can 'dip-in' to a section easily, I find myself picking the book up for a light spot of reading with a cup of tea. I also use this book heavily in my Classics course - so it has a multitude of uses.
Overall, a thorough, unbiased, but easy to read account of western civilization. If you live in the western world, and are wondering where you came from or why things are the way they are, then get this book!

It will find an appreciative audience of paleontologists, invertebrate zoologists, and ecologists thanks to its innovative and detailed evaluations of the roles of ecology, adaptive and functional morphology, life histories, biomechanics, developmental constraints, and chance on the evolution of the marine taxa of this speciose group."—Russel L. Zimmer, Science
"This book is an excellent source of information on the functional morphology and variety of colonial architecture in bryozoans, very well illustrated, and worth reading at least twice."-Robert L. Anstey, Paleobiology
"Even as one of the converted, I found the book a stimulating combination of paleobiology and ecology. In many ways it is a 'teaser'-the authors suggest a number of interesting hypotheses, and can test only some of them. Perhaps most important, McKinney and Jackson provide a plethora of fascinating ideas and examples that demonstrate the potential of this group of animals, and that should stimulate more work."-Michael S. Keough, TREE
"This stimulating book is sure to promote further interest in bryozoans. It will appeal to biologists and paleontologists alike."-Paul Taylor, Times Higher Education Supplement
