5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2007-08-24

Sheri Koones' book shows proof of the benefits, customization and capabilities of modular construction and has been a great publication for this growing industry. As the Executive Director of the Modular Building Systems Council of NAHB, our members have felt a lot of pride in the success this book has had, and the notoriety it has brought to the industry. It is a great book for builders and homeowners alike, whether you own a modular home or are considering purchasing one.

1 out of 5 stars Long on promise, short on substance.......2007-08-23

I purchased this book along with another book about "modular" homes by the same author titled "Prefabulous: The House of Your Dreams Delivered Fresh from the Factory". I am terribly disappointed by both the books and I am leaving this same exact review for the other book as well.

The book is nothing more than pretty pictures. It offers very little in substance. While the book does profile several large houses constructed in a modular fashion, the author seem to have neither the inclination nor the construction background to discuss the meat and potatoes issues. The book is sprinkled with platitudes and how various home owners chose to decorate their homes. I would have liked to see discussions about how the actual construction was accomplished, what the pitfalls have been, some rudimentary floor plans etc. An in-depth profile of at least one of the houses including perhaps a sit-down with the architect as to how the pieces fit together would have been better than the sheer fluff that fills the pages.

It seems the author was exposed to the modular way of building homes rather by accident and while she seems genuinely enthusiastic about this method, she does not possess proper education/training/experience to guide a reader properly. Instead, she chose to produce this coffee table book that is pretty to look at but offers little else. I was suckered by the promise of modular homes into ordering both the "coffee table" books by this author at the same time and both are equally disappointing.

Modular type of construction does offer some promise in very specific cases for an educated home owner/builder that can take advantage of the efficiencies of this method while avoiding the various pitfalls. But do not buy these books expecting to be educated. You are better of researching somewhere else where true professionals offer advice in this area.

4 out of 5 stars Modular Works - Even in CA.......2006-07-23

Hi. I highly recommend this book and more than just a passing comment, I have developed a personal home in coastal CA and there are some nice examples of what is possible, mostly on the east coast, but some factories here can get close with stock plans. I really like the intro and first chapter or so of text, think it does a great job of showing how these homes are not only equals but surpass site/stick building in many respects. There is still so much misinformation out there it aggravates me sometimes, I think this book will drop your jaw not just because they're modular, but because they feature homes you'd expect to see in Architectural Digest.

Many manufacturers are building a more solid house than I see on many jobsites around here in CA, and I'm originally from areas featured in this book on the east coast, so when wanting to build this method for my own home it was tougher but possible in the west. Like anything, your house will only be as good as company building it. Big corporate builders use these techniques and some even use modules in finished homes, unbeknownst to buyer (and a modular falls under "system built" housing, similar to incorporated wall panels/roof trusses). US has some catching up to do in modular, especially CA, and yes there IS a LOT of HUD-code "manufactured" homes being passed off as modular or "on-frame" modular (that is UBC-code but won't pass mustard with many lenders) being pushed onto those not aware.

It is a maze, I've been there and live in a very unique modular in coastal CA and you wouldn't believe me if I told you what my appraisals are shortly after my building it. Hands down, best financial decision for my family and instant equity. If interested, feel free to drop me an e-mail as I'm happy to share info to help others. Also read The Modular Home if you haven't already.

4 out of 5 stars a good beginner's book on free brush painting.......2003-11-28

This book could be a good beginner's text for self-teaching on traditional East Asian brush painting popular in China, Korea, and Japan. This book comprises 22 lessons, starting from calligraphy of Chinese characters to a complete landscape with people and animals, with reasonable instructions and beautiful paintings as examples. However, this book emphasizes "xieyi" (free brush painting) rather than "gongbi" (fine brush painting). To those who prefer "gongbi" (as I do), it is somewhat disappointing.

2 out of 5 stars A real disappointment.......2003-09-12

I bought this book for help in working with color, having already done some ink work with the "four gentlemen." I found it very poor in practical information, and can't imagine how a beginner could learn anything from it. There is very little clear information on even basic brush strokes or on loading the brush, much less on other techniques for color work. Moreover, there is extensive emphasis on the composition aspects of calligraphy and the use of seals, which is most unhelpful for someone who does not know Chinese. The examples include the cursive and seal form of the characters; any attempt to imitate these would make a fool out of anyone who did not know Chinese calligraphy.

The positive aspect of the book were the prints of the authors' work. Some of these were interesting and quite lovely. Unfortunately, I did not want a portfolio; I wanted a "how to" guide.

The only useful alternatives I have found at this point are the two publications by Ning Yeh, which you can order from OAS. I had been hoping for another instructor's point of view. I would say that the authors of Oriental Painting Course are fine artists, but very poor instructors.

Wonderful book with explanations of origin and culture - great addition to your art book library - excellent read and techniques!

5 out of 5 stars Best oriental paiting book, beautiful illustrations.......2000-05-02

If I had to recommend one oriental painting book, this would be it. It includes the most information and the clearest explanations. It is also in full-color and has many beautiful illustrations throughout.

First, the book covers materials including how to choose papers, brushes, and inks. I found the photos of each brush to be very helpful. It then teaches you to how to hold the brush correctly & make basic Asian characters.

There are wonderful step-by-step demonstrations on painting bamboo, orchids, wisteria, chysanthemums, plum blossoms & various animals. Also covered are various landscape elements, water types, buildings, & figures.

The book also covers qi, color, composition, perspective, mounting your artwork and using seals. Some historical information and a glossary in the back are great bonuses.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to get for beginning in Oriental Painting.......1998-11-21

As a relative newcomer myself to Chinese Oriental Painting, I drifted through a LOT of titles - until I found this one.

Not even the shops in San Francisco's Chinatown have this book.

It is thoroughly laid out, with lots of lovely color pics and every section has a practical lesson to follow and learn from. In depth discussion of tools and equipment options are discussed, and different techniques and applications are displayed and explained in just the right amount of detail.

This is also a hardback book, and, in my opinion, represents real value for money.

I shall lovingly keep this book forever as a great momento of my beginning with this medium, a fine and wonderful work.

I can't recommend this book highly enough - it's great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2006-07-25

To be honest I wasn't expecting much, however, after reading the first few pages I was entranced by the authors non nonsense to the point style of writing.

Although much of this book is denoted to hiking and equipment, I found the topics in the area interesting and helpful. His photographic sections were very good and I learnt several things I didn't know (I am a high level intermediate level photographer).

The author promotes his Chromozone system in this book which I subsequently bought (guess what - it works!). The system is based on the zone system but for colour and not black and white work.

I would recommend this book. It is easy to read, factual, well written and concise.

2 out of 5 stars Broad overview.......2002-06-04

I thought this book's information was too general on both backpacking and photography, without enough detail to either improve my photography or backpack with a higher level of safety and fun. It might be helpful for someone who has never backpacked with a camera, but not someone with even a little bit of experience with backpacking and photography.

4 out of 5 stars Well worthwhile - good information.......2001-10-11

The author draws from an excellent background and beautifully presented examples. If one is interested in backpacking into the wilds and taking good pictures consistently, this book describes exactly how to do it.

Although Campbell uses the book to blantantly advertise his exposure system, it is very well written and explains the art of good photography extremely well. His technique actually works! I've tried it and I have had more consistent results.

His checklists for gear and his comments about the items are extremely valuable for those who have not ventured far or for those who would go farther.

This is a good beginner or intermediate book.

Although I am not an avid backpacker, my photography club recommended this book and I must say that it's my favorite photography book. I take it with me on every photo trip. It's tattered and torn from use and I will have to buy another one before long. Congratulations to Mr. Campbell for writing a clear and concise book. I know understand exposure.

First of all it's a book of tasteless cartoons about PMS written by a man. 'Nuff said. Awful.

By the way, I am past the age of PMS so you can't blame this review on PMS. I never really got PMS but I can relate with those who do. Many men are very unhelpful -- women can only do so much -- it should be OK for them to express their frustration with this a few days a month.

I am not going to donate this book to a thrift shop as I usually do -- I am throwing it in the garbage.

      Book Description

Pulitzer Prize winner, movie director, boxer, politician, novelist, wife-stabber. Who is Norman Mailer?

In this first literary biography of Norman Mailer, Rollyson draws on new interviews and unpublished and manuscripts to reveal the shifting personas this most controversial writer.

This book gets at the heart of Mailer's obsession with violence and sheds new light on the novelist's involvement with Jack Abbott, the prison writer who fatally stabbed an aspiring young actor.

Showing how Mailer obsessively invented himself, this biography portrays a major literary figure in the making -- from his precocious debut with The Naked and the Dead to his most recent novel, Harlot's Ghost.

          Book Description

Now restored to print with a new Foreword by Philip Gourevitch and an Afterword by the author, this book is a frank, moving, and vivid account of contemporary life in West Africa. Stationed as a Peace Corps instructor in the village of Lavié (the name means "wait a little more") in tiny and underdeveloped Togo, Packer reveals his own schooling at the hands of an unforgettable array of townspeople--peasants, chiefs, charlatans, children, market women, cripples, crazies, and those who, having lost or given up much of their traditional identity and fastened their hopes on "development," find themselves trapped between the familiar repetitions of rural life and the chafing monotony of waiting for change.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best PC books ever written.......2007-02-28

If you want to cast moral judgement on George Packer, don't read this book. If you want to read the best Peace Corps book ever written, at least about life in Africa, then pick up this book. I lived in Guinea in the mid-90s, while Packer was in Togo in the early 80s. Yet I felt like he was describing my own village, my own frustrations, my own thoughts and feelings (save the prostitute). This was the book that convinced me not to write a book about my own experience. He did it, only better.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for World Savers.......2005-12-05

I spent 6 months in Africa while in college and was seriously considering joining the Peace Corps when I came across Packer's book. I was very realistic about the comic grind that is day-to-day life in Africa and the maze of paperwork, mind-numbing waiting for mundane administrative tasks to be accomplished and pervasive acceptance of inefficiency. However, Packer's book really brought home to me the toll of isolation takes on your ability to cope with these realities. Early on, Packer states that Peace Corps volunteers fall into 2 categories, the world savers and the folks that just to try to help in a small way and enjoy the experience. Packer recognizes he falls into the second category and even the detachment humor and a bit of cynicism can not protect him from the inequities and pain of life in pre-AIDS ridden Africa. I thought the book was honest and is on my list of 'must reads' for those thinking about committing full time to any volunteer group.

1 out of 5 stars A book of little inherent value........2005-08-29

I have to disagree with every review written about this book thusfar. It is not well written, for one. The style is amateurish, and it has little substance.
But that's not what really bothers me about this book. What really bothers me is that he writes about soliciting a prostitute that he describes as having a "twelve-year-old's body." Another thing that bothered me was that George Packer dropped out of the Peace Corps without even telling his so-called friends in the village that he was leaving. He wasted the opportunity that was given to him, wrote a mediocre book about it, and yet reviewers come on Amazon.com and laud it.
Want some free advice? Read any other book about Africa, Togo, or the Peace Corps instead. This one is not very good.

5 out of 5 stars Profound in its Simplicity.......2003-09-15

George Packer's ability to describe the lives of many who live in Togo make this piece of text a must-read for all, even for those who do not have an interest in serving in the Peace Corps. He writes with raw emotion and sincerity, without a tad of pretense. I'd say that Packer's foremost accomplishment in this text is that he makes no attempt to tell a story about how a superior white individual intervenes in a remote village and rids the residents of poverty and illiteracy. Rather, The Village of Waiting is a sincere account of his realization that sadly, some things just cannot be altered. I think Packer knew this from the outset, but it is interesting to read about he endures this realization during his 2-year service in Togo.

          5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2002-12-21

Haunting--this book is raw and hontest. I can't get it off my mind. Will be visiting friends doing VSO in northern Ghana soon and am trying to get a copy for them as well.

                          Book Description

In 1900 a violent rebellion swept northern China – the Boxer Rebellion. The Boxers were a secret society who sought to rid their country of the pernicious influence of the foreign powers who had gradually acquired a stranglehold on China. With the connivance of the Imperial Court they laid siege to the legation quarter of Peking. Trapped inside were an assortment of diplomats, civilians and a small number of troops. They were all Sir Claude Macdonald, the British Minister in Peking, had to defend against thousands of hostile Boxers and Imperial troops. It would now be a race against time. Could the rag-tag defenders hold out long enough for the gathering relief force to reach them? This book describes the desperate series of events as the multinational force rushed to their rescue.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to Boxer Rebellion.......2007-09-03

If you are looking for a decent introduction to the Boxer Rebellion in only 96 pages (i.e., can be read in about an hour to an hour and a half) this is the book for you. It gives a succint (but not in-depth) history of the actual rebellion (political as well as military), its historical context and a discussion of the main "players" with their motivations. Cannot be beat for a 96 page review.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview of the campaign........2006-10-03

As with most Osprey titles, this book was well written, with a great amount of information on a almost forgotten event in international history. If anything, I would say that the illustrations in this book are not as good as the majority of the Campaign Series books. This is counteracted by good use of photography and maps. Overall, this is another strong addition to the Campaign Series.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Excellent Overview.......2002-01-24

The question is not what is not in this book but what is. One must judge by what is intended not what might be expected of a thorough footnoted academic work or a popular history of great length. This entire series is aimed at the casual reader, the sort who reads Military History Quarterly, WWII Journal, Naval History, to name a few. In most cases, reading MHQ, my eye is caught, the narrative is compelling and I find myself reading about the Middle Ages or some border raiders in the Balkans, none of which I would make a trip to the library for or even make a web search.
These campaign series are most useful for their graphics and illustrations, many of which in this one are contemporary photos. Many have orders of battle listings and charts which are of most interest to war gamers. It is my opinion that this series is marketed to them and to the general reader who wants more detail than appears in the general histories covering an entire war. This serves that purpose admirably.

One could also read the volume on the Boxer Rebellion in the Men At Arms series. (see review.)

                          2 out of 5 stars I had higher expectations.......2001-11-13

The author has established a solid reputation by co-authoring several great books on the boxer rebellion. Thus I had purchased this volume with very high expectations as to its contents.
I was however disappointed by the text which was very choppy with some grammatical errors. I had the distinct feeling that the text was pre-written and then force-fitted into the Osprey format. If space was at a premium, then there was unnecessary duplication of information such as the order of battle for the forces, allied and Chinese in the text, repeated in a few tables.
The face-saving grace of this book is that there were a few nice illustrations with one particularly compelling bird's eye view of the besieged Legation compound.
In this series, an earlier Boxer rebellion book by Lynn Bodin is superior.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Solid Campaign Summary.......2001-06-09

In Peking 1900, Peter Harrington covers the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion in China and the Allied campaigns in June-August 1900 to relieve the besieged foreign legations in the Chinese capital. Although this campaign, with the dramatic siege of the legations in Peking, has been covered before, Harrington provides a useful summary of the campaign. The author is currently the curator of the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at Brown University, and he has used his access to that resource to provide many hitherto unseen photographs and illustrations from the campaign.

In the background to the campaign, Harrington discusses the spread of anti-foreign attitudes in China, the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-5 and the emergence of the Boxers. Although this section is quite good, there is a subtle use of euphemisms to downplay foreign aggressions against China. For example, the author states that the First Opium War (1839-1842) "was the result of disagreements between Chinese officials and British merchants in the port of Canton particularly concerning the supply of opium from India." In fact, the Chinese were trying to stop the British from importing highly addictive opium into China, where it was already causing social problems. In modern terms, the Chinese were attempting to interdict the flow of narcotics into their country, and even by 19th Century standards of commerce, the Chinese had a right to determine what could be imported into their country. In reference to the Second Opium War in 1860, Harrington states that, "Peking was entered by Allied forces on 12 October 1860." That's putting it very mildly. In fact, the Anglo-French troops stormed and sacked the city. The use of euphemisms such as "disagreement" and "enter" seem akin to the attempts by modern Japanese historians to downplay and justify their own aggressions in China. Oddly, the Taiping Rebellion is not mentioned in this section, although it seriously weakened the Manchu administration of the country.

The main campaign narrative covers the First Relief Column, the storming of the Taku Forts, operations around Tientsin, the siege of the legations in Peking and the final relief effort. There are only two 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps in this volume, and they cover the storming of the Taku Forts and the defense of the British legation. The later map is particularly good. Three illustrated battle scenes complement the text, in addition to many excellent photographs. A chronology, and detailed order of battle for both sides is provided. The section on opposing commanders is a bit too high-level, focusing only on the senior Chinese and Allied leaders, and the author might have provided a bit more detail on the junior officers such as John Jellicoe who later went on to major commands. David Beatty, of Jutland fame, was wounded in the campaign but is not mentioned here. Nor are details given on any American, Japanese, French or Russian commanders.

One point that the author mentions but glosses over is very significant for readers interested in trying to understand Chinese concepts of war-making. On 14 July 1900, the Chinese asked for a truce in Peking, despite the fact that the defenders in the legations were hard-pressed. Harrington notes that the Chinese virtually had the legations in their grasp. In fact, had the Chinese employed heavy artillery the siege would have been over very quickly, but the Chinese never made an all-out effort to storm the defenses. The reason may lie in the peculiar Chinese penchant for "teaching a lesson" to disrespectful foreigners, which does not see total victory as necessary. Merely besieging the embassies and inflicting losses may have been enough to chastise the 'foreign devils' in Chinese minds. Such conceptions of warfare are useful for Americans to keep in mind, given the current growing level of Sino-American animosities. The Peking Campaign provides a sober lesson that the Chinese mindset toward war is not the same as our own.

To his credit, the author also provides some information on operations around Peking after the relief of the legations and some of the anti-foreign violence elsewhere in China. However the author seems to miss the opportunity to point out the historical uniqueness of the Peking Campaign, as the only time that the British, Americans, Germans, Russians, Italians, French and Japanese have ever conducted joint military operations against a common foe. Only a xenophobic reaction like the Boxer Rebellion could ever have produced such unheard-of cooperation between the world's great powers.

If so, it looks like the Western powers misunderstood Prince Kung's role in the Boxer uprising.

                                          Book Description

A study of cultural encounter, this book takes a fresh look at the much ignored and often misunderstood experience of Christian Indians in early America. Focusing on New England missionary settlements from the mid-seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries, Hilary E. Wyss examines the ways in which Native American converts to Christianity developed their own distinct identity within the context of a colonial culture.

With an approach that weaves together literature, religious studies, and ethno-history, Wyss grounds her work in the analysis of a rarely read body of "autobiographical" writings by Christian Indians, including letters, journal entries, and religious confessions. She then juxtaposes these documents to the writings of better known Native Americans like Samson Occom as well as to the published works of Anglo-Americans, such as Mary Rowlandson's famous captivity narrative and Eleazor Wheelock's accounts of his charity schools.

In their search for ostensibly "authentic" Native voices, scholars have tended to overlook the writings of Christian Indians. Yet, Wyss argues, these texts reveal the emergence of a dynamic Native American identity through Christianity. More specifically, they show how the active appropriation of New England Protestantism contributed to the formation of a particular Indian identity that resisted colonialism by using its language against itself.

George Orwell was credited with first saying that "history is written by the winners." This statement has certainly held true when trying to gain an understanding of what life was like for Native Americans during the first 200 years of their cultural clash with the newly arrived and always arriving Europeans. As one whose previous knowledge of Indians was limited to biographies of men like Tecumseh, the Prophet, and Sitting Bull (books written using, at best, the regimental histories of the "winners" as the primary source of material), Writing Indians truly opened my eyes to what many Native Americans really experienced during the early years of cohabitation when they were introduced to Christianity.

The author was extremely creative in bringing the individual stories out one-by-one using the scattered writings left by the Native Americans and allowing the reader to combine the many distant voices into one chorus which, when coupled with the more familiar writings of the "winners", spoke for several generations. In my past studies of Native Americans, I seldom could picture the people outside the boundaries of either the battlefield or the front yard of some Territorial Governor (signing a meaningless treaty). This book is wonderful in that it patches together the writings of a surprising number of individuals who were in the process of developing a unique identity grounded in two cultures. It reveals the intelligence of the Natives as they sought to keep what they viewed as the better elements of their culture by appealing to thier visitors in the familair words and ideas contained in Christian thought. Wyss could only succeed in this by drawing on a great deal of reseach.

Anyone who wishes to understand and study the history of these Native Americans on the East Coast and how they actually interacted with the European population, or hopes to broaden their general knowledge of the natie Amercians should read this book.
