5 out of 5 stars Essential for urban designers, planners and architects!.......2007-08-14

This book beautifully builds upon the foundation of Hegeman & Peets' Civic Art. Andres Duany is a master at organizing elements of urban design and town planning into this sort of encyclopedia that is easily understood and usable by planners and designers.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Sequel.......2004-04-03

If you don't have the first Civic Art, originally published in the twenties, you ought to buy it immediately. Having said that, this book is reiterates many of the same ideas, principles, and messages of the first Civc Art, but from a perspective including all of the developements (and learning from all of the problems) introduced into urban design in the last 80 years. It should be in the library of every architect and of those interested in architecture and urban design. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

5 out of 5 stars A dizzying array of art styles.......2006-10-07

Ms Rubin Wolf is a master at assembling a dizzying array of various art styles. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately for me, I already know what I like - representative art with an eye toward good color harmony. I purchased the book hoping it would elevate my portrayal of light and shade. This book did not meet this quest.

5 out of 5 stars A Splash of Inspiration.......2000-04-26

This was the first Splash book I had seen and I've now purchased all of them. As a newby to watercolor I have to say this is the most inspiring book on watercolor I have ever seen. The book includes 109 different artist's and, true to the title, all pics display spectacular ways of dealing with light as the focal point of the painting. Whenever I'm stuck for an idea, a quick review of this book has me rushing for my paints.

    Book Description

Mariette Pathy Allen documents the lives of extraordinary individuals, their partners, families and friends. Through photographs and short texts, the reader is offered an intimate connection to the book's subjects and -insight into how their own lives are affected by gender. As Allen says: "Trans-gendered people offer the rest of us a potentially exhilarating -vision of fluidity, freed from traditional roles or definitions. They make vivid the questions: What is the essence of humanness beyond masculinity or femininity?"

Framed by the emerging transgender political movement, The Gender Frontier is one of the first book to include both female-to-males and male-to-females, as well as queer youth. One of her subjects, Robert Eads, a female-to-male who died of ovarian cancer, was also prominently featured in the award-winning film Southern Comfort Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's one of the best books on gender identity in the world!.......2007-07-09

"Once again, Mariette Pathy Allen does it-- as an advocate for transgender rights and understanding about the world of transgender (TG) people through her often daring, always respectful and empowering camera lens. Her words add the necessary spice to make this a savory meal that lasts in your very soul. As a photojournalist she is known worldwide for her remarkable ability to capture in photos the inner and outer landscapes of the TG experience. Poignant, moving, funny, celebratory, provocative, revolutionary, these are some words to describe her art and her impact globally.
Her photos fill the pages of this beautiful book, along with thought-provoking essays, poems, personal stories and essays of advocacy against violence and intolerance toward persons of TG experience by well respected spokespersons including the "Transgender Menace" founder, Riki Wilchins, Jamison Green and Allen herself. If you want to take an insider's walk into Transgenderism, this book will expand your mind and open your spirit."

As a sexologist, gender coach, and gender ID advocate, I can speak to the power of Mariette Pathy Allen's contributions ---they are honestly life altering. She can spin the right words and capture the essence of personhood like no one else. If you want to gain insight about the world of TG, this book is it. I love it. I love her. I[...].to learn more about this important contribution. She and her amazing photographic works are the essence of personal empowerment. Don't miss this book.

5 out of 5 stars moving photography and personal histories.......2005-10-21

this book avoids being sensationalistic and instead shows a very real portrait of what different transgendered lives and experiences look like. the histories of the subjects are particularly moving and personal. i'd recomend this book for anyone interested in gender studies or portrait photography. if, however, you're looking for a sesational and exploitative book of "trannies" than you might want to pass this one up.

    5 out of 5 stars Art & Activism.......2004-07-25

Without Mariette Pathy Allen's art and activism, the transgender movement would not be the vital force that it is today. It's that simple. If you care enough about the provocative subject of gender to have found your way to this page, this book belongs in your library. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful............2004-07-07

I feel Mariette Pathy Allen has made a real difference in the way non gender variant people view gender variant people. She has recorded something wonderful in her book "Gender Frontiers". This book captures the hues and shadows of the humanity of gender variant people. Her book depicts the joy and struggle of being alive with a difference most of humanity is either unaware of or skeptical about. Gender Frontier is a truly an amazing work created by an amazing person. A must read for all those who are gender variant or know someone who is.

I already knew something of the subject, but the personal stories opinions and essays provided an extraordinary context for Pathy Allen's wonderful images and I learned a great deal. It is also beautifully produced.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful chronicle of the WWII Citizen Soldier's sacrafice.......2003-04-30

This is a compilation of Ernie Pyle's best dispatches from the front lines during World War II. His stories were printed in American newspapers throughout the war, and brought home to the people of those years just what our men (and women) on the front lines had to endure, and how brave they were in doing their duty day after day until the job was done. It's moving to read about the hardships our soldiers went through in order to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

We owe a great debt to the generation of Americans who struggled through this period of history. So many Americans, regular people like you and me, lived through hell and many paid the ultimate price. Ernie Pyle's stories bring this sacrafice to life in a very emotional way.

The book also includes a brief biography of Pyle. It's a beautiful, if sometimes tragic, time-capsule of the WWII years, and I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for anyone interested in the Dog Face!.......1999-03-19

I have yet to find a better book on the experiences of the average "dog face" in WWII. From North Africa to Sicily to Italy to France; Ernie was there and covered it better than anyone.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING point of view of the G.I. !.......1999-03-17

It would be difficult to find a better book on the average G.I. It isn't hard to understand why every dog face loved Ernie Pyle; he lived among them, lived like them, and died like them. This is one of the best prime source reads around. I can't recommend it highly enough. The section on the Italian campaign is a must read.

                  Book Description

The Oceans Are Waiting is a true story of newlyweds on a four-and-a-half year circumnavigation aboard a small sailboat. Single for many years, with her children grown, Sharon Ragle found herself facing a solitary future. Little did she know that one step off her familiar path would lead to adventure, romance and a life at sea. What followed was a funny and loving escapade across 35,000 miles of ocean and through many exotic lands. Join Ragle and her husband as they sail to the Cook and Galápagos Islands, as well as many others aboard their 37-foot sailboat, Tigger. You will be captivated by their honeymoon voyage to little known places like the islands of Rodrigues and Atata. You may also gain a new perspective on several favorite cruising destinations like the South Pacific and the Great Barrier Reef. While there are many sailing books that tell of various journeys, this is undoubtedly the first one by a middle-aged woman who finds a new chance at love and at life because of her dream of a circumnavigation.

Listen to a real cool person tell you all the best parts of a great adventure.
Sharon is my mom, and a very interessstttting person. Dad is a great guy and our favorite curmudgeon.
This book started out as a handwritten journal, mailed home from some really far out places around the world. It is now a well-polished book full of laugh-out-loud silliness and high adventure.
My favorite story is about the raft of "refugees" on the Indian Ocean. Read this book and see if you agree. :)

Each of the stories is a proverbial box opened up by way of a fathers experience with his young children, presented with home-spun psychology, old-fashioned ideals, and humor.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource.......2001-06-04

We received this book as a gift only yesterday, and have already devoured it (even though our child is only 5 months old). We loved it so much we plan to give it as a gift to everyone we know with children. Mr. Bowlby not only writes an excellent "cookbook" for spending quality time with your child without high dollar cost, but also incorporates humor and emotion (you should have seen my wife's tears as she read about such wonderful topics as "Friday night sleeping bag father-son sleep togethers"!). The book is organized into well thought-out categories and makes for very easy and enjoyable reading.

Parents will walk away with simple and fun ways to demonstrate to their child love comes from the heart, not the wallet. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars ALL IT TAKES IS A LITTLE COMMON SENSE.......2001-03-30

Although beautifully camouflaged, the key to Rex Bowlby's "Why Why Would I want the Toy, When I Can Have the box?" shouts out the key to happy children and happier parenting. In 149 pages, Mr. Bowlby shows us it's not necessary to spend endless dollars on our children's happiness. Let the child invent the toy, let a box become a ship, give him a pile of dirt, a basin of water and discarded plastic bottles, a turkey baster, and his mind will be challenged for hours. He will be exploring the unknown, imagining, discovering right and wrong through trial and error, and developing a little common sense. Every page is a promise.

5 out of 5 stars Novel, original, highly effective -- budget & kid friendly........2000-06-06

In Why Would I Want The Toy, When I Can Have The Box?: 101 Ways To Make The Most Of Your Children, With The Least From Your Wallet, Rex Bowlby shows how a scrap of wood can be a great ally when a parent wants to get things done with their children, that a car parking aid can double as a multi-purpose sports device in the garage, and a can of shaving cream can foster creativity and defuse tension. There are thirteen chapters of development in which parents are shown that contributing to chores helps children acquire self-confidence, that executing physical challenges helps children obtain coordination, and that playing make-believe helps children develop imagination. Why Would I Want The Toy, When I Can Have The Box? is a novel, original, highly effective approach to parenting and offers a wealth of budget and "kid friendly" tips, tricks & techniques.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Grandpa's Opinion.......2000-05-20

As the father of two daughters, three granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-granddaughters and one great grandson...I truly could have used this book forty years ago!

This well researched, conveniently organized and extremely readable handbook should fill the need of todays young parents for sensible and practical help.

A great gift for many occasions!

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR PARENTS/GRANDPARENTS.......2000-05-04

Parents and grandparents of all aged children should read this! It gives some great ideas of things to do with your kids that cost little or no money. But the best part is that your kids will love you for it. These are the family activities for the before TV era - you know, when families were closer, talked more and played more "together." Some of the ideas might seem silly or out of character, but you soon "get into it" when you see the response from your kids. Mr. Bowlby writes in a style that is fun to read. His humor is so "real." I could relate to many of his stories. Each suggested activity is described in about one page so you don't have to read through a lot of analyses to get to the point. I truly feel that this book is a must for anyone with children! I'm buying some for Father's day gifts!

                  Book Description

For the first thousand years of its history, Ireland was shaped by its wars. Beginning with the legends of ancient battles and warriors, Wars of the Irish Kings moves through a time when history and storytelling were equally prized, into the age when history was as much propaganda as fact. This remarkable book tells of tribal battles, foreign invasions, Viking raids, family feuds, wars between rival Irish kingdoms, and wars of rebellion against the English. While the battles formed the legends of the land, it was the people fighting the battles—Cuchulain, Finn MacCool, Brian Boru, Robert the Bruce, Elizabeth I, and Hugh O’Donnell—who shaped the destiny and identity of the Irish nation.

This is the real story of how Ireland came to be, told through eyewitness accounts from a thousand years of struggle, brought together for the first time in one volume. It’s a surprisingly immediate and stunning portrait of an all-but-forgotten time that forged the Ireland of today.

                  4 out of 5 stars Irish Enthisiast.......2005-09-22

Well written and informative. A good collection of original texts from Ireland. Especially useful after reading a good ancient Irish History book.

                  4 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource.......2001-05-31

This book contains stories from a thousand years of Irish kings, as drawn from primary sources. The book begins with the legendary stories of the Book of Invasions, and the stories of Cuchulain, Finn MacCool and Mad King Sweeney, all of which are translated in a clear and compelling style. The stories then continue through to Hugh O'Neill and the Nine Years War. Each section begins with an introduction, and each chapter begins with a preface that introduces the author and what the author is writing about. As an added bonus, this book includes a glossary of common Irish words used in place names (e.g. dun, bally, etc.) and a guide to pronunciation.

This is a wonderful resource. I have read many books on Irish history, and it is great to be able read about select episodes as written about by people who lived closer to the actual events. The stories are easy to read, and are quite entertaining. I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars A Thousand Years and Hundreds (It Seems) of Kings.......2000-12-08

David Willis McCullough has edited and combined many, many original texts of Wars of the Irish Kings (so goes the title) that can be interesting, frustrating, dull or very dull depending on the particular source used. It is a little jarring to go from one of the source writers to another as their styles are often different and the short length of the excerpts does not allow enough time to get used to a particular format or way of expressing ideas before it is time to move on. The flurry of names coming at the reader can be quite daunting, as well. The best and most effective part of the book are the brief introductions before each original source. They are concise, well-written and effectively prepare the reader for what is to come. The book does make me want to read further in Irish history to help fill in some of the gaps left empty by this book.

                  4 out of 5 stars The Irish.......2000-10-29

Interesting portrayal of the different leaders of Ireland. A book that I read because of my growing interest in the Irish heritage...Maybe that is because of my girlfriend...but definetly a book to read if you are either of Irish hertiage or like to find out about royalty.

This book lives up to what it is supposed to be, an overview ofmodern European History. I am not fond of textbook overviews, butthat is what this is, and it does its job. It gives the reader a basic history from the French Revolution to the popular culture of the last 30 years. However, it is still a "textbook" and does not cover anything in depth.

This was by far the most interesting history book that I have ever read. It is a brilliant amalgamation of facts, interesting analysis, maps, and historical documents that constantly touches on recurring themes throughout European History. I read it for the AP Euro class I took last year and, truthfully, it is the only thing you need to succeed on the essays of the AP test. However, all of the chapters are at least 30 pages long, with much material to comprehend and note-taking is necessary to remember much relevant information. If you have the time to put in to it, though, you will not regret slaving over this textbook.

This textbook is filled with misinformation, typos, and blatant grammatical errors. I hope professors stop requesting that students read this text. The only thing worse than the book is the compainion website. It has practice test questions that contradict the "real" test and quiz questions that they provide. If you take this course DL like I did, this really makes a big difference. I have spent the better half of the semester arguing for points from my professor (and winning) who apparently never bothered to read the tests or the text (I should get paid from him!!)
One example, on a practice test, when you type in the name Pompey, a correct answer, it tells you that you are wrong because it is Pomey (there is no such Roman General)
When you contact the publisher's website administrator, they tell you that you need to talk to your professor to get anything changed. That was two months ago, he nor they have done anything about it. I am not exagerating when I say that is one of at least 25 examples that I have noticed.

Also, there is a lot of inconsistency in the writing styles of chapters. There is an overemphasis of women. Now, I am a women and I agree that we have been left out of history for way too long. This book has a section per chapter just reminding you how bad we had it throughout history. Chapter after chapter in the ancient and middle ages sections at least, women's lots did not change a lot. I think they could have just updated us when major advancements were made.

4 out of 5 stars Great for AP Euro!.......2003-11-08

I took AP Euro as a junior last year and actually really enjoyed this text. It was a lot better than the other book that had been used the previous year which was comprised almost completely of political history. The pictures are nice when you have a big chapter to read and the writing is simple to comprehend. The pitfalls of the book lie in the chapter on the French Revolution and it is obvioius that toward the end the deadline was coming up because numerous spelling errors and other typos were found throughout the final chapters. The formation of the E. U. and its development were almost not at all covered, but much of the material is excellent. In preparation for the AP test my class did not do very much in terms of information, but spent most of its time doing DBQ's and essays. I read the entire book cover to cover and did not even have to study for the AP test and recieved a five, so I highly reccomend this book but look somewhere else for the French Revolution or if you really want things structured in a strictly chronological formation.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Overview of European History.......2003-04-15

I am a junior in an AP European History class. My class uses two textbooks, one of which is Kagan's Western Heritage. The Kagan textbook is by far my favorite of the two textbooks to read. It is very interesting and thoroughly covers all the topics of European history, many of which are skipped in my other textbook. I am even considering buying the book so I can read the chapters my class skipped and keep it on hand as a reference. The order of the chapters is not at all difficult to follow as long as the reader has a basic knowledge of European History or looks at the timelines at the beginning of each section. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Europe.

                          2 out of 5 stars Too complicated........2002-09-27

I am a freshman in high school, and this is my textbook in my AP European History class.

The events depicted are often out of order, making it harder to understand the timeline. The writing seems inconsistent, sometimes short and understandable but often is long-winded and unclear. The authors of this book assume you have some knowledge of both of the geography in Europe and at least some knowledge of Europe's history already. In most of my fellow students' case, they assume wrong. If you do not already have some experience in studying Europe, then I would recommend searching for a different book.

                            Book Description

This book contains the written versions of lectures delivered since 1997 in the well-known weekly seminar on Applied Mathematics at the Collège de France in Paris, directed by Jacques-Louis Lions. It is the 14th and last of the series, due to the recent and untimely death of Professor Lions.

The texts in this volume deal mostly with various aspects of the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. They present both theoretical and applied results in many fields of growing importance such as Calculus of variations and optimal control, optimization, system theory and control, operations research, fluids and continuum mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, meteorology and climate, homogenization and material science, numerical analysis and scientific computations

The book is of interest to everyone from postgraduate, who wishes to follow the most recent progress in these fields.
