Over 600 carefully reproduced floral illustrations from 19th C. sources. FAR superior to Dover's "Floral Illustrations" CD-ROM & book (ISBN 0486999432) which only has 89 illustrations. Use these for publications, letters, envelopes.... Have fun!

I love the style of the cartoons in these books by Ed Emberly. I got several of them for my kids. I would have loved them as a youngster, but my boys aren't all that thrilled with them I don't think.
Easiest books to use to learn to draw.......2005-08-28
Ed Emberly has made some wonderful books for kids and grown-ups of any age that have no drawing skills, but want to learn a simple way. His books are the easiest books to get you started if you have no previous drawing skills. He starts with a step by step illustrated lesson to draw one simple item. First a simple straight line here, then insert a circle then, then another line, step by step along the way and before you know it you have a completed drawing that you can be really proud of. I teach Cub Socuts and this artist makes the perfect book for teaching a class when you are a volunteer yourself that is not an art pro.
In this one, he teaches us to make monsters of all sorts like a witch, wolfman, Frankenstein, vampire, Also see his book, "Make a World", and "The Big Green Drawing Book". If you want more Halloween related drawings including cats, jack o'lanterns, and a full haunted house, try Ed Emberley's "Big Orange Drawing Book".

Building a sink isn't for everyone, but..........2000-05-31
This book is probably not practical for those who don't already own woodworking tools (i.e., sabre saw, circular saw, clamps, chisels, etc.). However, if you are looking for an excuse to buy some, here it is. I actually built the sink and I have to say that it works like a charm, I use it constantly and the whole process of building it was gratifying. The down side is that I wouldn't say this is the way to go to save time or money. The time and cost estimates provided in the book are not very realistic. For the big projects it would be wise to set aside a weekend or so to complete them. You could probably buy a fiberglass or stainless steel sink on an online auction and spend roughly the same amount of dough. I also built the basic table, which I like very much. Probably the most useful aspect is that you can tailor the designs for your darkroom. If you get a sense of satisfaction from building things and you can't find the right equipment to fit your space then this is the book for you.
good reference book for starting a home darkroom.......2000-04-12
There are plenty of illustrations in this book, but they are only sketches or drawings. This book has some ideas that may be outdated or simply not economical. For instance, making an entire darkroom sink, painting it, preparing it for sealing, and all that, not to mention the worrying about leaks, etc. Could be better suggested that an economical sink under 100.00 be purchased... Too much time and effort into something that "might" save you time and money isn't worth it for me.

In the graphic novel genre, nothing comes close to queen and country. These collections of single comic books are a wonderful look into the world of spies and the world we live in. Riveting and wonderful. Recommend reading all the others as well!!

Not worth $5 bucks.......2006-09-05
I got this book because it was $4.99 and I needed to spend $4 more dollars to qualify for free shipping on another purchase. It was either pay $8 for shipping, or add this book for $4.99.
I now wish I'd paid the extra $3.01 so that I might not have this bad taste in my mind... that "bad read" taste that just lingers psychically. Ick. You see, I am the type of reader who will see a book through to the end no matter how awful. And therein lies the problem.
This book is of a particular genre, the "glamour job tell-all", sort of a Devil Wears Prada (but not even as good as that, and that wasn't all that good a book -- despite the way Merrill Streep single handedly saved the movie.)
Anyhow, the problem with this book is that for a tell all to "work" the reader sort of has to be sympathetic to the writer/protagonist. And with Lads, that just isn't possible because Dave Itzkoff is the kind of guy you'd go out of your way to avoid in life if you could.
While he skewers all the people he once worked with, from famed editor Mark Golin to loosely disguised Maxim editors, one sort of has to wonder if his coworkers even remember the guy -- he's that much of a wash out. He's such a weasel that self-admittedly only a handful of people show up for his goodbye party and of those most are there for the free drinks and of those there for the drinks most get their fill before making their escape by 7:00pm. Too bad the reader can't get out as easily.
Don't get trapped into spending hours with Dave Itzkoff via the pages of this book.
Gentle Reader, avoid my pain. Even if the book is free; don't do it!
Funny, often painfully so.......2006-01-08
Full disclosure: I was once a freelancer in the New York magazine business, and at Maxim on and off for a few years. (Now on with the review.) I really enjoyed this speedy read, but this may be out of sheer self-centeredness: I like stories that accurately give the reader a tour of a part of the world at a particular era, and this made for amusing reading because I floated in and out of that specific moment and place, at an Important Time In My Life, In the Big City. (I read part of the book in a nearby dive bar, and nearly spit out my beer a few times, certain scenes were so hilariously familiar.)
The average non-Maxim-affiliated reader can find plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in Itzkoff's memoir, but New York magazine-biz types have probably just rolled their eyes in disgust at the lad-mag employees who've "sold their souls." (Or rolled their eyes at Itzkoff, Toby Young, or others who unflinchingly hold up the mirror.) The book's definitely funny, but it's a wry, dark humor, given more to acknowledging smiles and nods than knee-slapping guffaws.
Would a comparison to Toby Young's (almost) tell-all be insulting to Itzkoff? Maybe. Young's pratfalls were retarded, cartoonish. Itzkoff's screw-ups (too numerous to call out here) were undoubtedly cringe-inducing, but funny and familiar and heartbreaking, too.
SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! The end is way too pat. I don't mind that Itzkoff and his dad end up on the shrink's couch, but it seemed like that resolution was just stuck on. The scene is well-rendered, but a longer road to the psychiatrist may have been in order.
Laugh and Cringe.......2004-10-05
Lads gets you both laughing and, with what the writer endures, cringing. Itzkoff is, simply, funny, and his book is smart and well-written, and thankfully much more than a rah-rah recounting of life inside Maxim. To be open, I know the author, but knowing him had no impact on the fact that at many times while reading I actually laughed out loud as Itzkoff described his jobs, his life in the NYC publishing world, his family, the painful dating world and those he worked with or for. But for all the criticism he lays on others, Itzkoff saves his harshest comments for himself; it's not self criticism, it's self flagellation. It's also exceedingly honest, and his examination of being a man in this Maximish world is thoughtful and thought-provoking.
Male Enhancement.......2004-09-30
A hilariously poignant - and pleasantly pessimistic - tale of one man's rise through New York's publishing industry circuit. Touching at times, yet always temperamental, Izkoff's skewed view on life, liberty and the pursuit of getting laid gracefully skirts the fine line between raunch and redemption, providing a captivating read in the process. An insightful peek behind the headlines and hijinks at Dennis Publishing, it comes highly recommended.

I love this book. It's devastatingly witty, heartbreaking at moments, and yes, heartwarming. A fun, wicked portrait of glossy twenty-something Manhattan life.

Solid skill building for young (and not so young!) adults.......2001-05-12
Believe it or not, a priest recommended this book to me! As a great advocate of respectful communication being a key to building healthy relationships, he felt -- and I agree -- that Powell's book is very helpful. I work with college students as a health educator and find that many simply haven't developed the skill of being appropriately assertive in general, let alone in regards to the touchy subject of their developing sexuality. This is the only book I've found yet that speaks in plain language about being assertive without talking down to young adults who deserve our respect, care and concern in dealing with such a difficult issue.
I have used portions of the book in training peer educators on alcohol and sexual assault issues, as well as in conversation with individual students concerned about their own ability to navigate a sexual (or non-sexual) relationship successfully. And as a even better bonus, I learned a lot in the process!
Parents, teens, young adults, educators and others interested in building healthier relationships or helping young people build their own, will find this book helpful. It's well worth it!

You can't find a better study on the topic, and the author is mistress of the sources like few other living historians. The only thing left to do is to look more at the gender issues raised by the whole issue, but this book is so good and thorough there is absolutely no use criticizing it for what it is not intended to be!
Wonderful Book.......2000-05-19
This is a great book about a wonderful woman, who got lost in the shuffel. As there isn't very much written about Matilda, the first almost English Queen in her own right, the author deserves applause for their ability to put together such a checkered past. The thrown was stolen out from under her by her cousin Stephen, and they began the civil war that English people discribed as the time when "Christ and his saints slept." Speaking of which, if you like this book, you'll love "When Christ and His Saints Slept" by Penman.
Empress Matilda.......2000-04-30
I found this book fasinating. The beginning is a bit jumbled, hard to follow, but soon it launches the reader into the world of Empress Matilda. The author has done an excellent job of bringing the empress, her father and sons back to life for me espcially, she and son Henry are my ancestors. What better way to get to know them!
