        Book Description

What's lurking under the bed? Who's casting that shadow outside my window? Common questions children ask themselves in the dead of night. But what if, instead of those rather innocuous queries, the child asks things like: What's inside this bunny that makes him move? What if I put a raisin in a dead man's nose? If I leave the paw of a deceased mole in the sun, will it grow sprouts and fungus like potatoes? This is the world of Renee French, who's independent comic book stories have been disturbing readers and provoking reactions since the early '90s. Oni's hefty collection, Marbles In My Underpants, is the first major volume of her work to be published anywhere. It's a comprehensive retrospective, examining French's versatility and the spectrum of her career, from the harsh early work in Grit Bath up to Corny's Fetish, a touching tale of a lonely man and his desire for love. Through horror, psychedelia, and, ultimately, a skewed approach to conventional storytelling, French gets to the dark middle of the human psyche, crafting a truly unique comic-book experience.

Surreal. Visceral. To quote an excerpt from the introduction, "it is these stories of hers that move like the mind. You can't help where they take you." This is a collection of short works including pieces from Grit Bath and The Ninth Gland. www.ReneeFrench.com

i bought this book after receiving french's "soap lady" as a gift. i loved that book &, while this one exhibits the same artistry, it is much edgier & rawer. of course, it's also not a children's book like the former but, setting aside the content, the drawings themselves display a grittier style.

this is definitely an adult book &, while i found some of the themes fascinating & disturbing, some might find them merely disturbing. just a warning for the faint of heart.

still, the drawings are mesmerizing overall & the slices of storyline are evocative & engaging.

4 out of 5 stars Basically good, but some terms need better definition.......2001-06-21

"Theodore H. White and Journalism as Illusion" is a fascinating in-depth study of the life and times of Theodore H. White. Using the vast resources of the T. H. White archives at Harvard University, Joyce Hoffmann sets up White as the prime example of what she feels was wrong with journalism in the early Cold War era. She alternately uses the phrases "journalism of illusion" and "insider journalism" to describe White's writings. "Journalism of illusion" refers to the writings of those who, like White, were American patriots first and journalists second.

The best examples Hoffmann has of White as a "journalist of illusion" come from the early part of White's career when he was in China, writing about Chiang Kai-shek for Time magazine. White would routinely downplay his observations of Chiang's corruption and brutality, believing it was more important to portray Chiang as a hero, lest America's support for China should wane and China would fall to the Japanese or the communists. It was only after repeated exposure to the Chiang regime's brutality that White's illusions about Chiang began to change. By that time, however, the heroic image he and other journalists had created had already taken hold in America, and White found himself under extreme pressure to follow the line. Editors at Time censored his work, feeling that the change in White's opinion was due to his encounters with the Chinese communists. "Journalism of illusion" meant being an American patriot first, and telling the truth second. It also meant following the teachings of Time's Henry Luce, who believed in "enlightened journalism", and told White to report events not as they were, but as they should be. Hoffmann's critique of White as an "insider journalist" comes from various periods of White's life, but the best examples are from his time in France, and from the Kennedy years. White was a journalist who loved associating with those in power, which Hoffmann associates to White's upbringing in Boston's poor Jewish ghetto. Never surrounded by prosperity as a child, White seemed to gravitate toward the prosperous as an adult. Hoffmann believes that White's admiration for the rich and powerful, and his desire to be one, seriously colored his writings. White repeated engaged in journalistic practices that would be considered inappropriate by today's standards of integrity. In France, for example, White was commissioned to write a profile of diplomat David Bruce. When White was finished, he showed a copy of the write-up to Bruce, presumably for fact-checking purposes, but also to make sure that nothing White wrote would be considered insulting to Bruce or his wife. White would follow the same practice in his write-ups of the Kennedy administration. Most famously, he showed Bobby Kennedy copies of "Making of the President -- 1960" before its publication in order to get Kennedy's feedback. As an insider journalist, White loved having the ear of those in power, and being part of the decision-making process. He was careful that none of his writings insulted those he admired.

Hoffmann's book is a valuable resource for what it unveils about White's life. The examples of correspondence with administration figures, such as Robert F. Kennedy, illustrate how deeply White was allowed into the corridors of power. Several flaws, however, mar this book. One, for example, is that the reader is never quite sure why White was chosen to be the exemplar of "journalism of illusion" and "insider journalism." Hoffmann provides examples of many journalists of the time who engaged in myth making about the Kennedys. Walter Lippmann, for example, comes across as a virtual spokesman for the administration. Hoffmann also describes journalists who knew about the U-2 flights, or the activity in Vietnam, and decided to help the government cover-up these stories because of patriotism. Any number of them could have been chosen as examples of "journalism of illusion" or "insider journalism." Also, in China, why White was chosen to represent journalists making myths for Chiang is never elaborated. This is questionable, because White eventually repudiated Chiang while other journalists were still writing favorable pieces.

I must echo the reviewer in the journal "Reviews in American History" who was troubled by Hoffmann's seeming lack of definitions for journalistic "truth" and "integrity." Hoffmann was obviously troubled by the style of journalism exemplified by White, but she never gives her own impressions of what journalism is or should be. If her contention is that modern journalism has finally latched on to the absolute truth, then I must disagree with the entire premise of this book. Certainly "insider journalists" and "journalists of illusion" exist today as they did back then. That is probably not her contention. We, however, are left to speculate on Hoffmann's views of the "truth" and modern journalism, because they are simply not there. This is highly unfortunate.

Hoffmann's faults, however large, cannot totally discredit this book. It is an interesting look at one of America's most influential journalists. Her use of the White archives is exemplary. Her devotion to journalistic fact and fiction, or rather "truth" and "illusion," is unfortunately dubious. Camelot cannot be read as totally "truth" or "illusion." It had elements of both. Theodore H. White, consequently, may be forgiven of some of the charges Hoffmann levels against him. His work, while not completely true, is not the total mythical illusion that Hoffmann believes it to be.

        5 out of 5 stars a reader.......2007-03-05

This book paints a vivid picture of life at sea, and an even more striking picture of what it's like to change careers and venture into what is completely unknown. I read it in one sitting, and immediately ordered another copy for a friend. It's inspiring to see someone decide to make a change, plan for the change, fight for the change, and then shine in her new work. A person who can do that, can do anything.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2006-09-22

This entertaining book about one woman's love of adventure, courage, and perseverence was awe inspiring. Jeanne Lutz dared to enter the all-male world of the merchant marine, proving herself every day for months at sea. The insight into her life is shown through letters exchanged with family and close friends, but the real story is her daily struggle and accomplishment in the job itself, her enormous courage in dealing with her pain and loneliness, and the example she sets for us all in male/female working relationships. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves challenge and adventure.

5 out of 5 stars I could not put it down........2003-08-27

I picked it up on a Saturday morning, meaning to only read for an hour or so. I finished it at 11:30pm that same day! It was a riveting true life story that even days later I am still thinking about.

I've often wondered, when seeing an ocean tanker sitting at dock; where are the people and what kind of lives do they have? Now I know. I feel like I was on the journey with Jeanne. She pulled me into the story. It has been some time since I have had a book inspire such emotion that I have been brought to tears.

This story portrayed a great lesson to remind us that compassion can open the door to forgiveness. And that forgiveness not only frees the recipient, but also the giver. It also reminded me how healing it can be to use an adventure to shake up your life sufficiently so it gets back on its intended path.

I, for one, am eager to hear more from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Voyage.......2003-07-03

Lutz's novel is based on her real-life experience as a merchant marine. She signs up during a tumultuous period of her life--
as a recent divorcee and disillusioned teacher, she's disappointed with her salary and lack of respect for her profession.

Although she's excited by the promise of more money and an adventure, she has no idea what lies in store for her as she ships out on an aging freighter.

Battling exhaustion and terrible working conditions, she's forced to face issues from her past.

One of the most moving parts of the book is when she tapes a letter to her daughters into her tiny dorm-room style refrigerator, hoping that somehow the message will remain safe when the ship capsizes.

Lutz is a fresh, honest Northwest voice--she captures what it's like to be a single woman who bucks the system.

Bravo! Hope to see more from this writer soon!

          Book Description

As the parent of an autistic child, I was told that my son's autism was a hopeless disorder from which there is no known recovery. While the literature regarding autism was enlightening, two key questions remained. First, how does a baby who is reaching appropriate developmental milestones get developmentally sidetracked and eventually fit the diagnostic criteria for autism? Second, if an autistic diagnosis implies an entrance into autism, shouldn't there also be an exit from it? Searching for answers to these haunting questions, and deeply committed to helping my son, I believed that autism had an organic and universal characteristic that, if located and addressed, would facilitate healing. Through research, observation, and documentation, Comprehensive Organic Intervention was born - a methodology that has facilitated my son's miraculous recovery without the use of additional therapies.

This book was written for busy parents looking for a concise, step by step intervention to facilitate healing from autism. It is neither a magic bullet nor a hit-and-miss approach, but a program for restoring normalcy and creating developmental gain by achieving and maintaining a stable state in your child. Through the maintenance of a stable state, positive, measurable, and lasting improvements can be witnessed in your child's demeanor, language development and skills, social skills, eye contact, interest in surroundings, enthusiasm to learn, employment of empathy, use of imagination, and reduced or eliminated tactile and sensory defensiveness. Includes recovery story, recipes, quick reference guides, theory, research, and resources.

          Book Description

General George S. Patton Jr, an inspirational leader and outstanding tactician, has intrigued and confounded his biographers. Utilising untapped archival materials in both the USA and UK, government documents, family papers, and oral histories, Hirshson creates the most balanced portrait of Patton ever written. It reveals Patton as a complex soldier capable of brilliant military manoeuvres but also of inspiring his troops with fiery speeches that resulted in horrendous acts, such as the massacres of Italian civilians. It explains Patton's belief in a soldier's Valhalla, connects the family's wealth to one of America's bitterest labour strikes, and disputes the usual interpretation of Patton's relief from command of the Third Army. In investigating this complex man, Hirshson has uncovered surprising material about a series of civilian massacres in Sicily, about the two slapping incidents, about attempts to exploit Patton's diary after his death, and about Patton's relations with top Allied generals. Patton emerges as a soldier of great imagination and courage, and his military campaigns make for edge–of–the–seat reading. All the drama of Patton's life comes alive in this meticulously documented volume.

I read somewhere that great men have great flaws and General George S. Patton was no exception. Gruff, volatile, arrogant, and self-promoting, Patton was nonetheless a bold tactician. Stanley Hirshson, far from presenting a hagiography, has decided to concentrate on the former. Indeed, it appears Hirshson has a sizeable axe to grind.

Though no particular fan of Patton, I couldn't help but notice that much of the author's unfavorable narrative was not only anecdotal but defamatory. True, Patton was an extremely controversial figure with viewpoints any objective person would question, but Hirshson plainly contradicts himself when accusing the general of ant-semitism. His claim that Patton did not respect Jewish junior officers seems to be at odds with the fact that Patton sent several to free his son-in-law from a POW camp in Germany.

One also detects a socialist ideologue deeply offended by the concept of meritocracy. Patton simply didn't share the author's worldview and Hirshson's dismay at this bleeds through to the written page. When not immersed in these complexities, Hirshson does the battlefield a disservice with maps that are basically worthless. The troop dispositions and maneuvers of the ETO's most daring general are completely ignored. Rather, we are given town names and not a heck of a lot more.

Can Hirshson write well? He can. Did the book hold my interest? It did. But, as I closed the book for the final time, I did not feel the satisfaction that a good book provides. Instead, I felt I'd been piloted through the life of Patton by a man not disinterested enough to drive. 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars What Bing Crosby's soft cap can tell you..........2007-08-22

Overall, GENERAL PATTON: A SOLDIER'S LIFE is a good, solid, if unspectacular tracing of George Patton's life.

There is a photograph in the book that shows Bing Crosby visiting a war zone to entertain the troops. The crooner has eschewed a steel helmet, and wears instead a less-protective soft cap. The caption announces that General Patton threatened, in fact, to have Bing Crosby court-martialed for his choice of headgear.

Okay. So here's my question. Was General Patton being serious? (Which would mean he was a mean old son-of-a-gun.) Or was Old Blood and Guts just teasing? (Which would mean he had a caustic sense of humor). I don't know: nowhere in the body of the text is Bing Crosby mentioned.

Similarly: George Patton's fatal car accident is mentioned. But we don't learn whether this was a dumb, avoidable car accident, or a one-in-a-million, odds-defying tragedy, or possibly a conspiracy. Stanley Hirshson, the book's author, doesn't take us to that level of detail.

Similarly: we learn a good bit about George Patton's performance as an Olympic athlete. But we don't really learn what **Patton himself** felt about the experience. We just get second-hand stuff. Mustn't Patton have spoken or written about his pentathalon performance at some point? If so--let's have it!

In short, this book will give you a good overview of Patton's life and it raises some interesting, even provocative ideas, but overall it remains just a bit flat and incomplete.

3 out of 5 stars A Two and a Half Stars Kind of Book.......2007-06-06

Stanley P. Hirshon has written an average study of an important American war hero. Two and a half stars is really the rating I would like to give this book. Hirshon argues that he has written a different book from other biographers. While that is true, what he is really trying to do with that statement is distinguish himself from Carlo D'Este who published his Patton biography after Hirshon had invested four years of research into this project. He encourages his readers to compare his biography to others. I am not sure most people will do that, but I am also writing a book on the making of the film "Patton." As a result, I have consulted and examined both biographies and what I find is that Hirshon comes to a number of different conclusions, but most of them seem to exaggerate minor differences and/or reflect a lack of familiarity with the military.

Hirshon uncovers a number of vignettes about Patton's life that are new. His coverage of Patton's experiences in the Olympics is particularly good. One of D'Este's major themes was that the most significant factor in shaping Patton's life was his dyslexia. A major theme that Hirshon pursues without mentioning D'Este's name is that Patton was NOT dyslexic. He certainly has an argument, but he takes it too far. He also spends a good deal of time discussing Patton's father and the wide divergence in their political views. The senior Patton was an important politician in California, who played a key and underappreciated role in getting Woodrow Wilson reelected in 1916. While Patton's relationship with his father could have been better than it was and their different political values are part of that story, the differences are not what made the son historically important and the emphasis Hirshon places on them seems excessive.

When most people think of Patton, they think of a 43-year old raspy-voiced actor named George C. Scott standing in front of a giant U.S. flag giving a war speech: "We have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit and the best men in the world. You know, by God I actually pity those poor bastards we're going up against. By God, I do. We're not just going to shoot the bastards, we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel." Hirshon spends a lot of time discussing the real speeches that Patton delivered to his soldiers and argues that these were the basis for atrocities that troops under his command committed. The story of killing civilians is hardly as new as Hirshon claims--other historians have looked into these events--and while some soldiers at the time tried to say they were following Patton's instructions there is a world of difference between giving a blood thirsty speech designed to inspire men to go into combat, and giving a formal order to kill non-combatants. Hirshon believes that had this event been better investigated at the time that it would have led to Patton's removal from command. This argument is difficult to accept, but one on which the author places great emphasis.

On other matters, the writing is adequate. The research is good and the author has consulted new sources that other biographers have not but their importances is open to question. What strikes me most is that Hirshon came to dislike his subject during this project and it shows. On the other hand, D'Este offers his readers a detached and balanced account that shows his readers Patton's strengths and weaknesses. D'Este is also quite alert to the details of military life. (I gave it five stars in an amazon.com review). You won't go wrong reading Hirshon's book, but there are other titles out there that are better on the same subject.

3 out of 5 stars Neither Extreme is True.......2007-03-28

Those who hate this book and those who love it are likely exaggerating. I agree most with the comment re: "American Caesar." I didn't expect this book to live up to William Manchester's portrayal of MacArthur, and it doesn't. Its prose is somewhat dull, but it is not poorly edited.

I also don't think it's too anti-Patton. While reading, I find myself siding with Patton against his enemies, many of whom were as petty as he was at times. Ultimately, the book makes me want to read more, and I think that's a strike in its favor.

4 out of 5 stars A detailed and uneven biography of a celebrity leader.......2006-08-12

This is a detailed and uneven biography of an interesting military leader who became a celebrity. The narrative is rich in detail and attempts to both tell Patton's life story in addition to providing an analysis of his personality, leadership style, and provide insight into some of Patton's very nasty prejudices. The verdict appears to be that Patton was an excellent Battle field tactical commander as well as one of the first to recognize the value of the tank and its impact on the battle field. But he had a hard time when it came to understanding the strategy of the larger campaign and being a team player. His anti British, anti Jewish, and anti Russian prejudice impacted his disastrous attempt to govern and de-Nazify Bavaria after the war. And Hirshson points out that the effects of Patton's "kill the bastard" speeches was disastrous leading to as many as five atrocities including the murder of civilians. And Patton's famous slapping of the soldiers in the field hospital is well explained from all points of view. So why did Eisenhower put up with Patton? Simply because he won! And victory in total war was more important than style points.
I found the early pages of the book most entertaining and interesting as they cover Patton growing up in San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. His father ran for Senate as a Democrat and Patton then married into a rich Conservative (very right wing) family and adopted their views and prejudices as he got older.
This is not a great book. For a really great book turn, for example, to William Manchester's "American Caesar". American Caesar demonstrates that Manchester is a most extraordinary writer. Hirshson is not a very good writer. But I do think Hirshson has a lot to offer in his controversial very detailed biography of General Patton. (From reading other reviews posted on Amazon I wonder if I read the same book as many others. Are so many so desperate for a hero without flaws?) I'm glad I never had to serve under someone like the REAL Patton when I was stationed with 14th Armored Cavalry in Germany. Decide for yourself and check this one out.

                Book Description

Ethnic Attachments in Sri Lanka examines the uses of ethnic identity in Sri Lankan society from the early medieval period through the present day. It takes account of the religious assertion of ethnicity in the early medieval period and Sabaratnam traces the cultural geography of ethnic regions under Portuguese and Dutch rule, and how institutional collaboration between British rulers and the upper levels of the native population resulted in a class society. He argues that the present civil war is due to competitive politics, which have heightened differences in religion and language.
