In this informative treasure of a design book, you will find that the author reached his principal goal to present structure that appear to belong and be apart of their settings.

Not what I expected........2007-04-01
I thought this would be a book of instruction or patterns for creating rustic furniture. Not even close. It is a book about layouts and some architectural design for parks and campsites. I sold it to a man designing and building his own campground. He loved it.
Vintage National Park Designs & Information.......2006-11-16
As a professional designer and consultant to the resort development industry, I found this book very informative, with extensive photos and architectural illlustrations, plans and diagrams originating from the early 20th century. A valuable reference book for land planners, architects and developers looking to create "authentic" park and recreational structures for their communities, whether in the mountains or the prairie!
Excellent Book.
Fantastic reprint of actual 1930s plans & techniques!.......2005-03-05
This guide, originally printed in the 1930s, is an incredibly complete overview of the many structures created in state and national parks from across America. Every kind of structure, and I mean EVERY kind, is represented here with an amazing number of photographs and plans so that you can reproduce them on your own property.
Whether you want to make a simple stone fire pit or a two-story timber-frame visitor's center, this is the book for you. Chapters include fences, signs, administration buildings, drinking fountains, comfort stations, fire lookout towers, trail steps, bridges, picnic shelters, fire pits, outdoor theaters, cabins, bath houses, and lots more. There's even chapters on furnishings and camp layouts.
The book is written in the somewhat flowery tongue of the early 20-century style, but it's quite readable and in some cases truly amusing, especially when discussing the evils of vandalism. A particularly funny passage is found in the chapter about signs:
"Barring an act of God, like a cyclone, or assault by that instrument of Satan, the initial carver, signs like these promise long life... In spite of all the evidence to the contrary, [the initial carver] is a physical, as well as mental, sluggard and is likely to think twice (we flatter him) before he will stand on his head or shinny up a post to accomplish his scandalous, vandalous ends. Twin to the jackknife pest is the souvenir hunter. Signs too appealingly picturesque and easy to get at and carry away fall prey to his pack rat instincts."
Gorgeous book - everything I wanted to know!.......2003-10-13
I always wondered how these incredibly beautiful wood and stone structures were built, everytime we went camping in some state or national park. Now I know!
Where's my pick, hammer, axe, adze and saw? I can't wait to get started! This book has everything. I hope to be able to buy the rest of Albert H. Good's books on the subject. Fabulous.

Excellent resource.......2007-10-03
I received this book as a gift recently. It is a very helpful addition to my "arsenal" of "How to Draw Manga" books. This book covers many things, including holding hands, embracing, and kissing. There is also a bit about love making, but it is by no means graphic.
I was also quite happy to find that the book covers same sex couples in addition to male-female couples.
I highly recommend this book to any aspiring manga artist!
Awesome Book !.......2007-07-11
I use it all the time for my couples and such. This shows great ways to draw kissing to intimate to marriage scene. It's reocmmended if you do this a lot and you love it. The illustrations are out of this world on how they show things popular with couple drawings. ^^
ok but lacking in areas.......2007-06-10
As far as "hetro couples" its pretty good. It is lacking in MALExMale sections. I notice their IS a GirlxGirl section. Its somewhat anoying that they left the guys out. Thankfully theirs a "how To Draw Yaoi " book coming. Hopefully its a GOOD refrence and not as Haft done as the "How to Draw Males"
Nice book!.......2007-02-01
This book is very useful; it does show women in the nude, (startled me.) but only top-wise, and has alot of useful tutorials.
Wonderful book.......2006-12-19
I knew that I wanted this book when I first laid my eyes on it. Inside this book it shows you the theory behind drawing couples, from dating to making love, and techniques of manga artists' as a added bonus. This book has little sample images of couples meeting in public, going on a date, and them walking together. Another good thing about this book is that they give you examples of how to correctly draw the couples together holding hands, jumping on one another, and kissing playfully. So if you are looking for a book that has couples ( as well as same sex couples) then this is definately for you! This book would be ideal for those looking to create a love story manga. For those who object to nudity, I don't recommend this book. It has nude scenes as well as sexual situations. This is also NOT a kid friendly book!

Book Description
Akane is a charming young girl with two separate identities. Growing up as a princess in the Dainagon family, she befriends Aogi, who later takes a position with the Inner Guards at the Imperial Palace - thus becoming unavailable to the outside world. When their separation becomes unbearable, Akane disguises herself as a maid of her mother, who works for the emperor! But entering the gates of the castle doesn't get her any closer to Aogi, and soon these star-crossed lovers are breaking all the rules for that sweet reunion they both crave.

More Starlight's even better!.......2005-11-08
The thing I like about this series is that you can jump in on the second volume and not be completely lost. Volume two with it's 4 chapters is a story in itself. While it might help to know that Akane and Aogi are and have always been childhood friends (it tells us this in volume one), other than that, volume two is completely understandable without reading volume one.
Volume two of "More Starlight to Your Heart" deals more with the inside feelings of a few of the characters. We now find out that Akane's older brother isn't just a lazy bum and that he stays home from work on rainy days to be with the woman that he loves most. (which I think is really cute, although I don't want to give anything away)
The relationship between Minor Captain Aogi (Akane's "lover") and Middle Captain Tou (Akane's brother) is strengthened I think because they both find that they have something in common. They're both hopelessly in love with women who aren't exactly what everyone thinks they are; women who have their own problems and need a little consoling every once in a while.
Anyway, this book was adorable and even though I bought it before volume one (I bought volume one off of here as soon as I was done reading volume two) at a bookfair, I was still happy that I could understand it.
This is a great series for younger girls too. Maybe not 5 year olds but it's rated for all ages. Maybe some of those little hopeless romantics out there would love it. There are a few sexual innuendos here and there but they're the kind of things that kids will 'understand when they're older'.
I loved it and I highly recommend that anyone read it! You wont be sorry.

Peter Godwin grew up in Rhodesia during the end of white rule. While his Rhodesians Never Die is a historical account of that time, Mukiwa is a more personal narrative--a testament to Africa and a memoir as seen through the eyes of a child becoming a young man amidst civil war. Spanning 1964-1982, from when Godwin was a boy of six in Rhodesia to when he returned to Zimbabwe as a journalist covering the bloody transition back to black rule, Godwin personalizes a difficult era in South African history with clarity, intelligence, humor, empathy, and sharp prose.
Book Description
Mukiwa opens with Peter Godwin, six years old, describing the murder of his neighbor by African guerillas in 1964, pre-war Rhodesia. Godwin's parents are liberal whites, his mother a government-employed doctor, his father an engineer. Through his innocent, young eyes, the story of the beginning of the end of white rule in Africa unfolds. The memoir follows Godwin's personal journey from the eve of war in Rhodesia to his experience fighting in the civil war that he detests to his adventures as a journalist in the new state of Zimbabwe, covering the bloody return to black rule. With each transition Godwin's voice develops, from that of a boy to a young man to an adult returning to his homeland. This poignant compelling memoir describes the savage struggle between blacks and whites as the British Colonial period comes to an end, set against the vividly painted background of the mysterious world of southern Africa.
Customer Reviews:
A sad and moving book.......2007-09-23
Peter Godwin certainly has a story to tell. It's a story of an idyllic, if unusual childhood, a disrupted but eventually immensely successful education, military service and then two careers, one in law, planned but aborted, and then one in journalism, discovered almost by default. Listed like this these elements might sound just a bit mundane, perhaps not the subject of memoir. When one adds, however, the location, Rhodesia becoming Zimbabwe, the result is a deeply moving, in places deeply sad, as well as quite disturbing account of a life lived thus far. Mukiwa, by the way, is Shona for white man.
The setting for Peter Godwin's early years was a middle class, professional and, crucially, liberal family living in eastern Rhodesia, close to the Mozambique border. I had relatives in that same area, near Umtali and Melsetter, and they used to do exactly what the Godwins did regularly which was to visit the Indian Ocean beaches near Beira. We used to get postcards from there every year, usually in the middle of our north of England winter. Envy wasn't the word...
Peter Godwin's mother was a doctor and this meant that his childhood was unusual in two respects. Not many youngsters in white households had liberal-minded parents and even fewer helped their mothers conduct post mortems. Unlike most mukiwa, Peter Godwin had black friends. He learned the local language and got to know the bush. He also grew up close to death and then lived alongside it during the years of the war of independence. He describes how the war simply took over everything and labels himself as a technician in its machinations. It's a telling phrase, admitting that he did not himself want to fight anyone. Like everyone else, he was caught up in the struggle, required to actively perpetrate the violence and that is what he did.
His education was disrupted. His family life was effectively destroyed. And how he managed to keep his sanity during the period I have no idea. He served most of the period in Matebeleland alongside other members of the Rhodesian armed forces and police who were not, to say the least, as liberal as he was. So in some ways he was already doubly a foreigner in that he was working in an area where he could not speak the language and was accompanied by fellow countrymen with whom he shared no beliefs or ideals. And yet he had to fight.
I have never served in a war and hope I never will. But my relatives from the same area as Peter Godwin were also called up into national service and also fought the war. I had not seen them for fifteen years or so when we met after they, along with many thousands of others, as recorded by Peter Godwin, had already fled south. But for them also memories of war were deep and resented scars. It was a bloody and dirty war where, if you were lucky, you could at most trust your closest colleagues. It was a vicious conflict at times and left everyone angry. No-one won. Everyone suffered.
Having eventually achieved the education he sought, Peter Godwin attempted to launch a legal career. But then, almost by default, he became a reporter. After independence, he learned of atrocities perpetrated by the Zambabwean army in the area where he had served during the war. He investigated. He reported. And then, on advice, he fled.
But he did eventually return to all of the areas he knew and the last part of the book is a moving and deeply sad account of how little he recognised in the places he loved as a child. But within this, there is a moment of hope as he meets a former freedom fighter and, with humour and new friendship, the two of them realise that they had not only been enemies, but had actually been two commanders trying to kill one another on opposite sides of the same skirmish.
But in the end, Peter Godwin is changed man, and his home and homeland, at least as he had experienced them, were no more. War had changed everything and everyone. No-one won.
disappointing.......2007-08-13
it is a somehow disappointing book, sometimes superficial, never really "deep". Some stories in the book are nice to read, but I regret having bought the book.
Mukiwa is Background for Today's Headlines on CNN.......2007-07-10
Easily one of the best books on Zimbabwe along with his second book "When a Crocodile Eats the Sun" I've read. I was in Northern Africa in the late 70's but never made it south and the books gave me a varicious trip without the danger. Godwin writes so well that you are living his story with him. And, today, July 9,2007, when I read CNN's article about the runaway inflation and Mugabe blaming factory owners, and business for the disaster he's made of the country I couldn't help but wonder if the author's mother was still alive and living in Zimbabwe. It was more than a memoir because it gave me a feeling of connection to a country I've never been to or had very much interest in.
You should read these TWO books!.......2007-03-30
Peter Godwin has written much, but "Mukiwa: A White Boy In Africa" and its follow-up, "When A Crocodile Eats The Sun," must surely be the volumes of which he is most proud. For anyone with even a passing interest in Africa and/or the present problems in Zimbabwe/Rhodesia, they are 'must-reads,' preferably in chronological order - Mukiwa (1996 and later paperbacks) first, and then Crocodile (2005 and 2007).
I confess straight away that my own knowledge of Africa is limited, but I have interested myself in the continent's affairs for as long as I can remember and I also nurtured enormous sympathy for Rhodesia, for its people, and for former Prime Minister Ian Smith.
Peter Godwin has little apparent sympathy for Smith and, for that and other reasons that are clear in his books, he can be looked upon as a liberal. Therefore, his two books are all the more potent for their description of 'the reversal of progress, the shocking decline, the descent into darkness' (Crocodile 2007, page 314) under the tyrannical and murderous regime of Robert Mugabe. These beautifully and movingly written but appallingly tragic books, based on first-hand experience and knowledge and Godwin's own family's declining circumstances, should be compulsory study for all liberals.
I was born before the Second World War. Therefore, I was around when Hitler's 'Third Reich' was crushed. I always hoped, but I never thought I would live long enough to see the collapse of Communism in 1989. I still hope that I live long enough to see Mugabe go and for the name of Ian Smith to be honoured again in Rhodesia!
Zimbabwe.......2007-03-25
Peter Godwin has written a harming story of a white boy growing up under the loving, nurturing hands of native blacks (Shona) in Zimbabwe. He confirms impressions that I have had of that kind people after a couple of work experiences I had as a physician in a remote hospital there. If you want to understand more about the culture and events that led to unfortunate state of Zimbabwe today, read Mukiwa.

Product Description
Penny and Tim Giesbrecht naively believed that bad things couldn't happen to good Christians. Until their "perfect" baby began exhibiting such strange behavior that "it seemed the Jeremy we knew had died." Two years of painful tests brought no answers. Then Jeremy was severely burned. As he screamed in pain, his mother cried, "Dear God, where are you?" In her much sought-after book, which was first published in 1988 and re-released in 2005, Penny Giesbrecht explores the feeling a parent in such situations experiences and also Scripture admonitions and teachings about suffering. Dr. Ross Campbell, author of How to Really Love Your Child wrote the foreword.
Customer Reviews:
I Could Really Relate.......2000-07-10
I was so desperate for help one night when I found this book on Amazon. I have a son with Asperger Syndrome and I could really relate to Penny and Tim's story. My husband and I are Christians, my husband is a Pastor, and I'm always asking that question to God,"why my little boy? This book helped me to understand that just because were Christians it doesn't mean that bad things can't happen to us. I don't usually read books but I couldn't put this one down. I work on the weekends at a local hospital and I'm very thankful we were very slow because it gave me the chance to read the entire book. Reading this book will touch you heart no matter what diagnose your child has been given. Penny shares her deepest thoughts with you. I also loved the pictures of Jeremy (Punky) and his sisters!
I couldn't put it down!.......2000-01-02
This books was shared with me becuase, like Penny, I have a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I don't read many books, and I didn't expect to read the book that had been thoughtfully shared with me. I began skimming the book, so I could politely thank the person who shared it with me. I glanced at the forward only to read it in it's entirety. I skimmed over the pages, and was drawn to read several paragraphs in each chapter. I went back to the beginning and started reading at Chapter 1. I didn't put it down until I was done reading. The first part is an excellent testimony of a family coming to understand what Autism is all about. The second part describes their struggle to understand the unimaginable pain their child has to endure due to a severe burn. The book takes you through their painful journey and if you read it to the end you can find the Christian understanding of suffering that the Giesbrecht finally discovered, and the peace that comes with it.

Book Description
"This book contributes significantly ot the conversation seeking to understand the international forces at play in the threatening war on Iraq."
Nelson Mandela
"Behind the Invasion of Iraq . . .synthesizes the seemingly disparate threads of the U.S. war drive in a blistering indictment of American foreign policy . . .The effect is of puzzle pieces clicking into place."
Counterpunch
Since September 11, 2001, there have been many accounts of the ways in which the alignment of global power is changing or will be changed by the U.S.'s "war on terrorism." Most of them take as their starting point the options facing the wealthy and powerful nations of the world seeking to control an ever larger share of the world's resources.
Behind the Invasion of Iraq is written from a different perspective, and one that makes possible a far more comprehensive point of view.
Its authors, Research Unit for Political Economy, are rooted in the politics of a Third World countryIndiawhich has long been on the receiving end of imperialist power. As a consequence, they have a more sober view of the workings of global power. In clear and accessible prose, weighing the evidence carefully and tracing events to their root causes, they move beyond moral outrage to a clear view of the process being set in motion by the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. They show that the invasion of Iraq is a desperate gamble by a section of the U.S. ruling elite to preserve their power, driven by the wish to stave off economic crisis through military means. Their efforts will not end with Iraq, but will require the recolonization of the middle East.
Behind the Invasion of Iraq exposes the idea that war will bring democracy to the Middle East as so much propaganda. In a context where so many rulers are themselves clients of the United States, the war is aimed not at the rulers but at the masses of ordinary people whose hostility to imperialism has not been broken even by corrupt and autocratic rulers. This book describes the remaking of global power with a truly global awareness of what is at stake.
Customer Reviews:
Since when is this research?.......2006-01-05
Yes, this book is put out by the "Research" unit for political economy, in Bombay, India. But these folks did not do much research! Instead, they simply ascribe the most outrageous motives to the United States any time we take action.
It is no surprise that in 1991, the United States took part in a multinational effort against Iraq in 1991. After all, Iraq did invade Kuwait. Now, Kuwait was hardly our ally. In fact, Kuwait had sided with us in the United Nations less often than any other nation on Earth. Still, the invasion by Iraq certainly provoked and merited this sort of response. Of course, that's not the way this book puts it. In this book, the entire liberation of Kuwait was simply an American, British, and Israeli plot!
Israel has never been able to get the United States to so much as put our embassy to that nation in Jerusalem (in the Western portion of the city, no less). But in this book, we Americans are in a conspiracy with Israel to let Jews "colonize" what it implies is Arab land, and maybe to massively evict Arabs from this land as well. That's not quite what is happening, of course. The only systematic and thorough evictions we've seen have been of Jews, from Gaza. And there may be more such evictions, of Jews, from parts of the disputed West Bank.
The authors say that it was plain to the world that Iraq was about to invade Kuwait when April Glaspie talked with Saddam Hussein shortly before the invasion. But it seems clear to me that we Americans were genuinely surprised by the invasion. Was it really plain to the world? If so, to which world? Was it really to this one, which happens to include India?
I think it is telling that the authors boast of a French plan to avoid attacking Iraq and instead have a conference at which it would be agreed that Iraq would get out of Kuwait in return for us (in effect) giving permission for Arabs to swipe some Israeli land. Um, why would that have been a good "trade" for anyone?
There is a section about sanctions against Iraq. These sanctions may indeed have been a dubious idea, but they were hardly deliberate genocide! And Iraq could have avoided these sanctions by complying with the demands on it. In addition, Iraq could have made things much easier on its population even with the sanctions in place. It's outrageous for this book to imply that these sanctions were simply a genocidal American scam.
The authors come up with even more nonsense when they discuss Arafat, a notorious thug. Arafat's gang of thugs is considered to be the true representatives of a whole nation, or at least of all the local Arab population. But that's simply false. That gang existed primarily to fight against Jewish rights in the region, and that's not the same as being genuine representatives of the Arab people and promoters of the welfare of those Arabs. And what does the book say about the aggression of Arafat and his gang against Israel? Oh, to the authors, it is just an Israeli trick to try to delegitimize Arafat! Once again, I wonder which world the authors think they live in.
Does America want to be an imperialist, colonialist, and genocidal nation? Obviously not. In a world at peace, our nation will do extremely well. The authors of this book ought to have considered the possibility that America's people and Congress (and even our administration) are anything but imperialist, colonialist, and genocidal. If the authors had wanted to do some real research on our reaction to aggression, they could have. They could have determined some standards by which to judge what we did. And they could have pointed out when we did things pretty much properly, when we made mistakes, when we reacted too strongly, and when we reacted too mildly. But they did nothing of the sort. Instead, they wrote some cheap and useless anti-American propaganda.
Behind the Invasion of Iraq.......2004-10-30
Interesting book that derived from a series of articles in the "Aspects of India's Economy" magazine edited by the The Research Unit for Political Economy in Mumbai.
Interesting in the fact that the book is written from an Asian point of view, although importantly not Muslim.
"Behind the Invasion of Iraq exposes the idea that war will bring democracy to the Middle East as so much propaganda. In a context where so many rulers are themselves clients of the United States, the war is aimed not at the rulers but at the masses of ordinary people whose hostility to imperialism has not been broken even by corrupt and autocratic rulers. This book describes the remaking of global power with a truly global awareness of what is at stake.
What's really at stake is US control of global markets. The report reveals that the US economy is now facing a nightmare scenario: A crisis of overproduction has crippled US GDP, resulting in monstrous trade and budget deficits, even as a potentially disastrous deflationary spiral appears to be under way worldwide.
Meanwhile, superpower rivals Europe, Russia and China are mounting a vigorous challenge to US economic preeminence, which is further threatened by the euro's emergence as a credible alternative to the dollar as global reserve currency. (All this is exhaustively detailed in the RUPE report, which draws its most telling evidence from the mainstream financial press.)
In this context, the US sees confiscation of the world's richest oil-producing regions as a magic bullet. While securing its own access to petroleum supplies for the foreseeable future, it can simultaneously defend dollar hegemony and restructure Middle East markets for the exclusive benefit of US-based corporations.
Which brings us to the crux: Direct American control of oil would render any potential challengers for world or regional supremacy perpetually dependent on US forbearance. In RUPE's words, "once it has seized the oil wells of west Asia the US will determine not only which firms would bag the deals, not only the currency in which oil trade would be denominated, not only the price of oil on the international market, but even the destination of the oil."
RUPE's argument here is powerful but complex, and this summary is necessarily an extreme oversimplification. But the overall thrust is quite clear: The US invasion of Iraq needs to be understood not as an end in itself but as the means to an end -- the foundation of a New American Empire."
Blame America First.......2003-11-07
Typical. Is there a Mad Magazine formula for this stuff?

This short book carefully and clearly explains why the US *has* to turn Iraq into a colony. The book begins with a brief history of Iraq in the modern era, then turns to US attacks on Iraq since the 1980s. In the final section, the authors tie the need for oil to the capitalist economies in the Western world --- without "our" oil under "their" desert, our economy doesn't work.
For anyone interested in understanding the current war --- or those interested in a quick introduction to US imperialism --- this book is highly recommended.
A comprehensive analysis of American foreign policy.......2003-07-28
When I initially purchased this book, I was skeptical that it would be another rant in a long line of far left-wing "America is the new Nazi empire" publications that have overloaded the academic arena during the past few years. While this writing does not go out of its way to justify the invasion on purely moral grounds or glorify America in its entirety, it does a very good job at presenting the facts in a professional manner. It presents the invasion of Iraq as an important piece in the larger puzzle of American foreign policy, both politically and economically vis-a-vis the rest of the world. There are a few occurrences of anti-Americanism in the book, but not enough to completely turn off the reader. The book also presents a nice background of history and it's scary when the reader realizes how America uses and will use other nations to serve its own purposes. The information flows are a bit choppy sometimes, but the quality of the information itself makes up for any anomalies in the presentation format.
Overall, I recommend this book for those who, like myself, have questions and doubts as to any of the real reasons behind the invasion of Iraq and perhaps looking for a glimpse into the economic and political future of the United States.
So as to not make anyone wonder about my political leanings, I consider myself to be a centrist Democrat/Republican (depending on the issue). I'm glad that Saddam is gone; I do believe that he is arguably a Middle-East version of Hitler and that had he been allowed to, would have acquired some form of weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, I think that the war in Iraq is justified for these reasons given the pathology of Saddam and his sons. However, I do not believe that that the American federal government is being completely forthcoming in its plans for a post-Saddam Iraq or the entire Middle East region for that matter.

Book Description
Europe and the World, 1650-1830 is an important study of the first age of globalization. It surveys the interaction of Europe, Europe's growing colonies and other major global powers, such as the Ottoman Empire, China, India and Japan. Focusing on Europe's impact on the world, Jeremy Black analyses European attitudes, exploration, trade and acquisition of knowledge.
Stressing imperial defeats as well as victories, this book shows the vitality of non-European powers, and how the struggles during this period frequently involved cooperation between the great powers, as well as war. With an original approach that takes full notice of recent research, this book explores the differences between specific areas of European impact and also includes discussions on the impact of the outer world on the European imagination.

This new study of war in the age of sail examines the development of warships and battlefleets and the evolution of seapower over nearly two centuries. Book Description
British science has undergone radical transformation during the past 20 years. This is less a result of scientific discoveries per se, but rather the structure of funding and institutions. Science used to occupy a discrete socio-economic space. Scientists enjoyed the privileges of status and funding in return for the generation of knowledge. This knowledge is now regarded as a commodified product or a set of commercialized relationships. This book aims to explain the transformation of science in the UK public sector through detailed analysis of the main Government Research establishments since 1979.
