Book Description
Paul Rudolph, one of the 20th century's most iconoclastic architects, is best know--and most maligned--for his large "brutalist" buildings, like the Yale Art and Architecture Building. So it will surprise many to learn that early in his career he developed a series of houses that represent the unrivaled possibilities of a modest American modernism. With their distinctive natural landscapes, local architectural precedents, and exploitation of innovative construction materials, the Florida houses, some eighty projects built between 1946 and 1961, brought modern architectural form into a gracious subtropical world of natural abundance. Like the locally inspired desert houses of another modern master, Albert Frey, Rudolph's Florida houses represent a distillation and reinterpretation of traditional architectural ideas developed to a high pitch of stylistic refinement. Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses reveals all of Rudolph's early residential work. Along with Rudolph's personal essays and renderings, duotone photographs by Ezra Stoller and Joseph Molitor, and insightful text by Joseph King and Christopher Domin, this compelling new book conveys the lightness, timelessness, strength, materiality, and transcendency of Rudolph's work.

Superb review of Paul Rudolph's houses.......2007-01-15
This book is an wonderful mix of photographs, drawings and text that give great insight into the work of Rudolph's understanding of the Florida's climate and the technology available in his day. It is a must for anyone seriously interested in modern architecture. What an amazing architect, what an amazing book!
the total package.......2006-12-28
I have the hardcover version of this book, and I must say the graphic design, color, printing, editing, text, and even the dimensions of the all seem wonderfully appropriate. I know the format of this, The Florida Houses, is similar to that of The Late Work in the same series; however it is far more successful when showcasing the building logic and detail elegance in early work of Rudolph and Twitchell than the later "brutal" style Rudoplh explored.
A total package as well as totally classy. I suggest the hardcover.
surpreendent.......2006-07-31
surpreendent phase of this great american architect.
the book explain small buildings with great significations.
The modern Florida house.......2003-03-12
I found myself becoming nostalgic looking through the pages of this book. Having grown up in Florida, I was stunned to see that the house I lived in had been a knock-off of one of Rudolph's houses. His early Florida houses were widely emulated for their clean lines and passive solar designs. It is an impressive collection, and illustrates the lighter side of Rudolph before he became caught up in the monumental forms that dominated the latter part of his career.
You might call him the John Lautner of Florida, creating a lifestyle as much as an architecture. You could see Travis McGee laying back in one of these houses, drinking a beer as he waits for the elusive flash of green. Rudolph really captured the spirit of Florida in the 40's and 50's. Simple, well-thought out designs that are as relavent today as they were then.
Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses.......2002-06-15
As the Case Study program got under way in southern California, Rudolph launched his own from his office in Sarasota on FloridaÕs Gulf coast. For two decades (with time off for U.S. Navy service) he created (first with Ralph Twitchell and then independently) a succession of airy pavilions that mitigated the steamy heat and filtered the brilliant light. In Ezra StollerÕs crisp period photographs these houses seem almost dreamlikeÑtoo graceful and pure to endure storms and the crass consumerism of waterfront development. And yet, despite the pressure of escalating land prices and the cult of gigantism, most of these houses have survived in their original form, and several have been lovingly restored. Every aficionado of mid-century modern should buy this elegant volume. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
Customer Reviews:
A humorous and nostalgic look back.......2006-12-22
Back in the eighties, I considered the "Bloom County" strip to be the best cartoon feature of the time. Therefore, reading this book was a humorous and nostalgic look back to another time in America. There were references to presidency of Ronald Reagan and the Iran Contra scandal, the nuclear arms race, the evil empire of the Soviet Union and the first president Bush.
For one moment, I forgot the time context of the strip. On page 50 boy genius Oliver W. Jones has created a teleportation device. In the final caption of the segment, his father asks him, "Could you put George Bush into the White House?" To which he responds, "OH, WHY DO YOU ALWAYS EXPECT THE IMPOSSIBLE FROM ME?!" At first, I thought the reference was to George W. Bush, but then realized it was about George Herbert Walker Bush. I laughed at that one because it certainly could be applied to both.
Cartoon strips provide us with humor and a cynical look at the political and social forces of the time. Therefore, if you have little knowledge of the events of the eighties, then you will have a difficult time understanding many of the cartoons. However, if you lived through them and were old enough to be politically acute, then you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
Told You!.......2005-03-12
Ok for you Get Fuzzy fans, this is what I am talking about. On the cover of this collection we see Berkly Breathed using the Bruce Springsteen album collection set(from Christmas 1987) for inspiration. Take a look at the cover, Are You Bucksperienced just plagerizes this idea.
Bloom County 4.... or 5.... depends on...........2004-06-16
Okay - Bloom County Babylon, the 4th Bloom County book was really a compilation of material contained in the first 3 books. So.... depending on if you want a chronological collection of the BC Strips, or to complete ALL of the BC Books, this is either the 4th or 5th volume of Bloom County, and Berkeley Breathed is still in high-gear producing the funniest 'toon strip I've ever read. And by "funny" I mean laugh-out-loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see "WHAT are you laughing at?!!!?" kind of laugh.
In "Billy and the Boingers" Steve Dallas, the sleazy womanizing ambulance-chasing lawyer, finally decides that even HE has had it with defending murderers and child abusers. Bill the cat inspires him to hold auditions for a "New high-profit heavy-metal rock band". Requirements are only "Need to know 3 chords and be able to grimace musically".
Along the way Opus the Penguin gets engaged to sweetie Lola Granola, and the new Heavy Metal Group "Death-Tongue" makes their pitch in Los Angeles to recording companies, ending with a memorable visit backstage at an Ozzy Osbourne concert - back when Ozzy was the "Elvis of Heavy Metal". Back in Bloom County Steve discovers that he must give up cigarette smoking or his life expectancy is 6 months. He has Opus tie him to a chair where he is the model of self-control for 38 whole minutes before he breaks down and tells Opus "Get me a (...) cigarette before I stick you in a blender". Things get worse from there.
As in the previous volumes Breathed does a fantastic job of creating a surreal universe full of people and critters that we care about, but who are most importantly..... funny.
B.B. just kept getting better.......2004-03-27
Bloom County was without a doubt the most insightful, funny, and beloved comic strips of all time. It's rabid following has never gotten over the disappearance of Opus and the Gang from the funny papers. That's because nothing has ever been able to take it's place. Could you imagine Opus, Bill, Steve, and Milo tackling today's issues? What besides G.W. Bush and Saddam would be in the anxiety closet. Alas, we can only remember the good times.
This is one of my favorite Bloom County books. It mostly took on an issue that has always been important to me, rock n roll. The gang takes on the PMRC by forming their own metal band Deathtongue. After battling Washington though, Steve Dallas caves in and Billy and the Boingers is born.
Long live live Opus. He is sorely missed.
Basselopes and penguins and rabbits, oh my........2004-03-09
I've always had a slight preference for the early "Bloom County", before things got quite this surreal. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy this one; there are a great many very funny bits in here, such as Steve Dallas facing the government commission led by Tipper Gore in defense of the lyrics of the rock band "Deathtongue", which featured Opus the penguin on tuba (very appropriate for a heavy-metal band, wouldn't you say?) Hodge-Podge the rabbit on drums, Bill the Cat on electric tongue, and Steve Dallas a lead singer and songwriter. All of which is certainly pretty surreal. But sometimes it got even weirder than that, if you can believe it.
Not the best of the "Bloom County" books, and certainly not the one to start with if you aren't familiar with them, but funny and worth owning if you enjoy the series and don't have it.

Another Masterpiece From The Master.......2007-02-19
From the creator who brought you Rurouni Kenshin and Gun Blaze West, comes yet another great masterpiece by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Buso Renkin is another great action/adventure graphic novel from one of the best in the business.
The story is about a young high school student named Kazuki Muto. After saving a young girl named Tokiko and sacrificing his own life, Tokiko plants a device called a Buso Renkin in place of his heart. Now with more enemies popping up all over Japan Kazuki must help defend his new life and his friends.
I loved this series and I believe it is the greatest thing that Nobuhiro Watsuki created. The story line is deep and the action is unbelievable! But what really makes this a greater series than Rurouni Kenshin, is that it has more comedy. It will make you giggle under your breath and make you smile and shake your head. I recommend this series to any or all manga fans who are looking for the newest and greatest series!
Buso Renkin Volume 1 receives 5 stars out of 5.
My name is Amone! Adios!
Buso Renkin Continues the Watsuki Legacy.......2006-08-26
I am a big fan of Rurouni Kenshin; I have read all the 28 volumes. When I heard that Watsuki had another series I was really excited. Kenshin was Watsuki's first series; the path of a Manga-ka can be difficult. Over the years Watsuki has perfected his drawing style and story telling skills. The result is Buso Renkin. Don't get me wrong though, Kenshin is a great series.
Buso Renkin shows great promise and I am looking forward to this story. One of the great things that Watsuki does is by having a couple of pages in the manga of how he creates characters, what is going on in his life, and what fans are saying. It makes reading the manga a more personal experience. I am diffidently looking forward to the anime that will be premiering this fall in Japan (which I'm sure will come out in the states if this manga sells well)!
Buso Renkin - The next great manga hit! .......2006-08-03
Nobuhiro Watsuki, the mangaka of the now famous manga and anime series "Rurouni Kenshin", has done it again with "Buso Renkin." This story of a young man (Kazuki Muto) that becomes wrapped up in a war involving the last two successful strands of alchemy (the Homunculus and the Buso Renkin) perfectly blends explosive action, hilarious comedy and extremely likable characters. Even if you did miss out on Rurouni Kenshin, I easily recommend Buso Renkin to any fan of manga. Five stars, flat out. "BUSO RENKIN!"

A Book To Keep.......2007-07-12
I had read and liked her "Without Reservations" and "Educating Alice." This collection of her columns did not disappoint and I kept going back to re-read what I thought of as hidden gems or things to think about in regard to my own life.
Great Book!.......2006-08-18
Alice Steinbach is a great writer! I have enjoyed each one of her books and this was no exception.
A book to be shared.......2003-06-17
I purchased this book because I had enjoyed 'Without Reservations' so much. I often share books with my closest friend. By the time I had read the introduction and the first few pages, I knew it would not be enough to simply have her read it when I was done. I knew we had to read it together, taking turns reading it aloud (a new experience for us). Steinbach's musings on everyday life are insightful, laugh-out-loud funny, poignant, a true delight. I plan to buy several copies for Christmas gifts.

Book Description
In his first three Commanders books, Tom Clancy teamed with Generals Fred Franks, Jr., Chuck Horner, and Carl Stiner to provide masterful blends of history, biography, you-are-there narrative, insight into the practice of leadership, and plain, old-fashioned storytelling. Battle Ready is all of that-and it is also something more.
Marine General Tony Zinni was known as the "Warrior Diplomat" during his nearly forty years of service. As a soldier, his credentials were impeccable, whether leading troops in Vietnam, commanding hair-raising rescue operations in Somalia, or-as Commander in Chief of CENTCOM-directing strikes against Iraq and Al Qaeda. But it was as a peacemaker that he made just as great a mark-conducting dangerous troubleshooting missions all over Africa, Asia, and Europe; and then serving as Secretary of State Colin Powell's special envoy to the Middle East, before disagreements over the 2003 Iraq War and its probable aftermath caused him to resign.
Battle Ready follows the evolution of both General Zinni and the Marine Corps, from the cauldron of Vietnam through the operational revolution of the seventies and eighties, to the new realities of the post-Cold War, post-9/11 military-a military with a radically different job and radically different tools for accomplishing it. It is an eye-opening book-a front-row seat to a man, an institution, and a way of both war and peace that together make this an instant classic of military history.

Zinni in War and Peace.......2007-08-26
I listened to it, rather than turning pages. The first half was more interesting than the
second half, which is more politics than personal or military history. That is not to deny
value to the later portion of the book. It was interesting to compare Zinni's adventures in
Somalia to the account in "Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures -- A True Story From
Hell On Earth" by Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait, and Andrew Thompson. They can both be true.
Zinni wins my admiration for his patient determination to improve things, a unit or a nation.
He shows the Somalia warlords as human. It was a disappointment that he took so long to see
through Yasser Arafat.
Zinni makes much of his "tell it like it is" attitude, and his interest in how to fight effectively.
I was surprised that he did not mention the statue of John Boyd in the center of the lobby at
Marine headquarters. Boyd was an Air Force fighter pilot, that taught how to fight effectively,
and told unpopular truths. Amazon has several books about him.
Zinni did not support the Iraq war. He claims plans for after the battles were won were not done,
or not done well. Could be. He claims 300,000 troops were needed. I wish he had supplied details
of that estimate, similar to the detailed plans for the evacuation from Somalia.
This is not one of Clancy's best, but it is still pretty good. I recommend it to those interested
in military history, whatever their opinions on the current Iraq situation.
Clancy Doesn't Muck About.......2007-04-05
Mr Clancy is one of the best military writers and he is typically on his game in this biography of Marine General Tony Zinni who eventually rose to CINC at CENTCOM, the command that has the heart of the middle east at its core. Clancy deftly switches back and forth between a first-person narrative of his subject and his own overviews of the history and background of each period, whether it be Vietnam or Somalia, Turkey or Pakistan. The only issue I have with Tom Clancy is italics. Everything told verbally by General Zinni is presented in italics so that a 440-page narrative probably contains about 220 pages of italics. If only Mr. Clancy would consult the Chicago Manual which states that italics should be used sparingly and never for more than a paragraph! Tom, I get a different voice in my head when I read the italics and I don't necessarily like that voice.
Excellent book, that tells it like it should be, surprisingly candid.......2006-08-18
This book, co written with General Tony Zinni, tells of the methods, means, and the reasons for our military. The last part, when General Zinni pulls no punches, about our approach to war, foreign relations, and when to use and how to use the military [with the help of the civilian authority] to fight smarter battles and when to fight, is an excellent assessment of our current problems in the U.S.. His approach to fight in a "smarter" way, reflecting the new realities of war, e.g., terrorism, and an ever changing world, is the way it should be-and not to declare "victory", if that is the objective, on an aircraft carrier as a photo-op [his words], and to support the ideas that are right and to criticize the ideas that are wrong, even if they are "politically" incorrect. A first rate book.
peacemaker.......2006-06-06
While 'In to the storm' elaborate detail of one big battle, and 'Shadow warrior' tells many big events, this 'Battle ready' tells us every single experience of General Zinni from O-2, O-3, O-4, everything till retired from O-10. I think I will be bored but with his sense of humor, General Zinni brings all his tought without make this book boring. (e.g. the HANDCON and took a bus in 'Nam).
I learn how military and diplomat works in peacemaker process.
More than a warrior's wisdom.......2005-12-27
In the summer of 1994, I attended a change-of-command ceremony at Camp Pendleton for the I Marine Expeditionary Force. A new 3-star was about to take command prematurely for someone of his seniority. He hadn't even been a division commander, a 2-star billet. The fast-tracking general was Tony Zinni and the rest of his career continued to rocket. Other reviewers have commented on every aspect of his book, including his lack of support for the invasion of Iraq, so I will focus on two parts that impressed me deeply. I do agree with several others that having Tom Clancy as a co-author was distracting and unnecessary. The alternating first and third-person narratives were uneven at times. Thus the 4-stars. But then again, "Battle Ready" is not a literary selection.
The first part was Zinni's 1967 tour as an adviser (called "co van" for "trusted friend" with the Vietnamese Marine Corps). Many accounts have been published about Marines in Vietnam but only handful has come from advisers; the very best Marine officers were selected for advisory duty. Other "co vans" include Gens. Boomer, Hoar, and Myatt--on the Army side, McCaffrey, Powell and Schwarzkopf. All of these men experienced a different Vietnam War than those who fought in American units.
Why is Zinni's advisory experience relevant now? Marine advisers are mentoring Iraqis, and they could only dream their counterparts fought like the South Vietnamese. There's no hubris in Zinni's observations. He understood the Americans' lack of cultural knowledge, including his own early on: "The advisers' job was not to give the Vietnamese Marines tactical advice (they had more fighting experience than most Americans, and it was their country...American commanders were all in a hurry. They wanted to end the war on their one-year tour of duty. Vietnamese [Marine] commanders realized they would be in it for the duration."
The last chapter, Chapter Eight titled "The Calling," is a classic leadership primer-observations made over the distinguished 40-year career of Zinni, a Marine warrior, scholar and leader. As a former Marine, I found his last paragraph most touching: "I have been all over this globe and exposed to most of the cultures on it. I am fascinated by them. I love the diversity. I want to understand them and embrace them. I could never understand prejudice or rejection or the sense of superiority that drive the hatemongers of the world. I lived through a tumultuous period of our history when our own minorities broke from second-class citizenship into full participation in this wonderful dream we call America. I have been proud of their accomplishments and contributions. They have proven the bigots wrong and made our nation greater. I hope the dream we have struggled to realize can be extended to the rest of the planet."
General, it was my privilege to serve under commanders like you. Semper fi!

This story is based on the life of Billy Bayly, a real boy who lived in Pennsylvania during the Civil War and had an unlikely friendship with a Southern soldier.
Customer Reviews:
Billy and the Rebel.......2006-08-01
This is a book about two boys during the Civil War who are on different sides, but who become friends. Billy and his mother made "Cousin" a part of their family, because as a run-away Confederate soldier in the North, he couldn't go anywhere else. The theme of the book was about the importance of helping people who are needy. The book was good at teaching a lesson about that even if people are on different sides, it's important to help. I would recommend this book to people ages 9 - 13, and people who might have to war but don't want to.
Customer Reviews:
Good... yet, confusing........2005-09-13
Corrie ten Boom lived an amazing life, chronicled in the books: IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE (her early years), THE HIDING PLACE (her wartime and prison years), and TRAMP FOR THE LORD (the 20 years after her imprisonment). In her later years, she wrote a lot of books, and one of those was MARCHING ORDERS FOR THE END BATTLE. If you've read through a couple of Corrie ten Boom books, then you will begin to see that she kept coming back to the same messages: God has no problems-only plans. Little catchphrases that she kept bringing up to drive home a point. Corrie's points are tremendous, and a wonderful encouragement.
But... MARCHING ORDERS FOR THE END BATTLE tends to be a little confusing at points. Sometimes it's hard to remember what she was just talking about because every couple paragraphs she changes topics almost completely. There are even a few points where the topic heading, and what ends up being discussed are completely different.
Yet, even with a little bit of confusion, MARCHING ORDERS is a pretty quick read with a lot to say. Corrie explains the fact that Christians today are in the middle of a great battle, and we need to be standing on victory ground with Jesus. Her words and stories are encouraging, and will give a new vision to Christians in this time.
Recommended reading for the Corrie ten Boom fan and for anyone looking to impact the world they live in.
Marching Orders for End Time.......2000-01-07
I was disappointed in this book, compared to the other books I read, by Corrie. I could not understand why I was not receiving it, until I read a comment today, from the archives where her material is stored (one place anyway). The comment said she became aware of the Charasmatic movement and realized her gift of casting out demons and was later mostly supported by Pentecostals. I am not against any Christian religion, but I do not accept certain principles of other religions, one being spiritual warfare. I do believe there is a Devil and demons, but, I do not believe in focusing on them. I believe all our focus should be on Jesus. So, I will not spend my time worrying about "attacks of the enemy", when he is already conquered by Jesus and all we have to do is press into Jesus' word, the Bible. That is how we resist the enemy, for the enemy to flee. Some people feel called to this type of ministry, and may feel this is right for them. But, it is not for me, so I enjoyed her earlier books alot more than this one.

Book Description
It's late at night and Big Gray, the monster cat, is on the prowl. Brother and sister mice Molly and Jake are safe inside the walls of P.S. 42, building their nests. Jake should have listened to Molly's advice and stayed inside. But he wants nothing to do with the school, class pets, or even kids.
While Molly is learning the secret art of X-ray vision from Gino, Jake is getting into trouble on the playground in another tangle with Big Gray. The only place he can find to hide is inside a ketchup bottle...and that's when the battle begins!
