Book Description
In 1949, Beijing still retained nearly all of its time-honored character and magnificence. But when Chairman Mao rejected the proposal to build a new capital for the People's Republic of China and decided to stay in the ancient city, he initiated a long struggle to transform Beijing into a shining beacon of socialism. So began the remaking of the city into a modern metropolis rife with monuments, public squares, exhibition halls, and government offices.
Wu Hung grew up in Beijing and experienced much of the city's makeover firsthand. In this lavishly illustrated work, he offers a vivid, often personal account of the struggle over Beijing's reinvention, drawing particular attention to Tiananmen Square—the most sacred space in the People's Republic of China. Remaking Beijing considers the square's transformation from a restricted imperial domain into a public arena for political expression, from an epic symbol of socialism into a holy relic of the Maoist regime, and from an official and monumental complex into a site for unofficial and antigovernment demonstrations.
Wu Hung also explores how Tiananmen Square has become a touchstone for official art in modern China—as the site for Mao's monumental portrait, as the location of museums narrating revolutionary history, and as the grounds for extravagant National Day parades celebrating the revolutionary masses. He then shows how in recent years the square has inspired artists working without state sponsorship to create paintings, photographs, and even performances that reflect the spirit of the 1989 uprisings and pose a forceful challenge to official artworks and the sociopolitical system that supports them.
Remaking Beijing will reward anyone interested in modern Chinese history, society, and art, or, more generally, in how urban renewal becomes intertwined with cultural and national politics.
Book Description
Step-by-step instructions for painting decoys — male and female — of 13 species: mallard, canvasback, redhead, American widgeon, greater scaup, common pintail, more. 24 full-color plates show profiles and top views; also detailed coloring information. 24 pages of color illustrations printed one side only. 2 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
For Mallards Only.......2002-11-21
The book is inexpensive and provides basic images of several duck species. However, it provides painting instructions only for mallards. For example, the book lists the primary paint colors for the other species, but it doesn't offer any information as to which of these colors are to be mixed to obtain the colors depicted in the images. This was a problem when I needed to repaint by Woodie dekes.
Painting Duck Decoys (crudely).......2002-01-31
If you're looking for a super-accurate detail-oriented definitive authority on duck plumage, you won't find it in "Painting Duck Decoys..." The 24 color plates within could've been done by any budding high school art student. If not crude, they are at best poor approximations, not terribly useful for anyone concerned with painting decoys realistically. Perhaps the proportions of the ducks depicted will be of use to some. But most serious artists will undoubtedly find much more accurate information in books featuring photographs rather than the amateurish paintings in "Painting Duck Decoys..."
Thank you Amazon for helping me find Painting Duck Decoys.......2000-10-11
I am excited to see this book being offered at Amazon.com I became familiar with Anthony Hillman's book when I began painting my own decoys and had trouble finding any refrence material at hobby shops, craft stores or sportsman shops but my wife called our local library and found this book and it has been a God send. People have been very impressed with my refurbished decoys! So were the ducks! Although I am finnished painting my decoys, I am going to buy a copy for my collection! It is a piece of art in it self, The illustrations are crisp, clear and precise. The instructions are freindly enough for a beginner! I want to thank the author, Anthony Hillman for sharing his knowlege in his book. I have looked at all the hunting catalogs and have found that with the help of Anthony's book, my decoys look more realistic and I have saved money that I would have forked out for at least 4 dozen new decoys.

A lavish tour of the Surreal Estate of Roller..........2001-07-30
Roller is without a doubt one of the most gifted, imaginative, original artists I have ever encountered in my Art Journeys. Circa 1987 I saw one of his paintings, and I have been a devotee ever since. Most persons will remember him, (and remember him they will if they have ever seen one of his paintings) as the guy who paints monkeys, cats and dogs wearing clothing, and for the flying pickles, cucumbers, cigarettes and other airborne objects. But there is much more than that, much more. --- If you buy this book, you will be able to enter Roller's world at Brenda's Nut Farm, Mrs. Jenkins' house, and all the other "places". And what a world it is. Use the adjectives of your choice. I will not indulge in that here. It has to do with an Asparagus experience a young Roller had when his grandfather showed him that Asparagus...Well you figure it out. It's a strange trip indeed, but one that is worthwhile --- On the surface, at a first glance, his paintings may seems crazy and off the wall, but have a look at the technique, the painstaking attention to detail, the original ideas and, well you'll being to realize more and more that here is an artist who is...Roller --- This book is a perfect showcase. Lavishly illustrated with many beautiful color plates, well printed and well bound. It's the best Roller book there is. The text is for the most part by Roller, because only he can really explain it all. If you are lucky enough to own this book, you are fortunate indeed. It is one of my favorite art books. --- Excuse the sort of disjointed review, but this book is really beyond review, because the art is as well. If you buy, it you'll see what I mean. If you don't, stick to something safe instead.

LITERATI MIND-BLOW (his paintings speak for themselves).......2000-03-01
STOP AT NOTHING TO FIND THIS ! You'll thank me later! Roller has an unequivocable, God-given(?) talent...those of you who know, really know. With that in mind, and for those of you who have SUPERB taste in literary entertainment and who are grateful to share the same unique appreciation for AMAZING imagination, I recommend this book. (I also personally recommend DRW's ANYTHING you can get your hands on-but this book is special...YOU'LL SEE, I got mine a few years ago in Santa Monica...keep looking, there's one out there for you too).
Wish I could........1999-04-05
DRW has the most distinctive and unique style of any artist of our time...I will never forget the first time I saw his work. I have purchased his art prints and previous books. I would have this one also if I could find it!

Book Description
The classic account of the appearances of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje--now updated for the milleniumLike Lourdes and Fatima before it, Medjugorje has become a holy site for worshippers around the world, a place that will be remembered long after the twentieth century recedes into history. In this edition, Janice Connell presents a new intruduction that places Medjugorje in the context of the millennium and suggests that the Blessed Mother's final appearance on Earth may indeed be at this small mountain village. The author tells what has happened to the six apparitioners since the book was first published, and the Blessed Mother's monthly messages have been updated through 1997. There is also a new list of Marian Centers across the nation. The Visions of the Children features exclusive conversations with the six apparitioners who have been receiving, for more than fifteen years, visions and messages of the Virgin Mary, including extraordinary secrets about the final chapter in the history of the world. This book not only tells of the need for love and spiritual awakening, but casts a powerful perspective on the wholescale devastation in Bosnia during the last few years.
Customer Reviews:
the book of The Blessed Mother at Medjugorje.......2007-09-07
I am not finish with the book yet, but I am very interested in what the auther and the children have to say about the appearing of the Blessed Mother Mary.
A must read !!.......2007-03-26
This is by far the best book I have read about the vision in Medjugorje. I took my time reading and re-reading it. The interviews with the visionaries, pilgrims and townspeople were simple but well done. The supporting scripture truly made a complete picture as to why these apparitions are so important and cannot be ignored. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to deepen their faith and renew their relationship with God. We are truly blessed to have these messages, we should receive them with an open heart.
Excellent.......2007-01-11
It is a good story, with a divine message from heaven. Apostasy is taking its toll in this world and we all need to wake up and hear heavens call to come back to Christ Jesus fold, before it is to late. This book will help those that truely believe, pray and pray more for all that are in true need of pray.
A beautiful collection of inspirational research and interviews .......2007-01-03
The interviews are facinating and simple. The messages are timeless and make so much perfect sense, it just blows your mind to be made aware of all this! Read this...you will not be unchanged, and you will enjoy every minute of the transformation.
This book can be read in awsome little daily bites, or as a sweeping consumption of hope and wonder!
I have learned so much thru the authors' well researched and sensitive approach to educating the reader as to the details of the appirations still continuing in Medjugorje. I picked up a few copies for Christmas gifts, they were received with anticipation and lots of appreciation...they don't have any idea how much yet!
The visions of the Children: The Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje.......2006-08-05
Maybe the most profound, truthful, and necessary book, besides the Bible, I have ever read. The call which is written about in this book is the same call for every single person on this earth and hopefully will be answered with love by everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Arrgh! Another Great Book Not In Print!!! A review of "Not Now! Said the Cow".......2006-03-28
I don't get it. This is a great book and somehow it is not in print. What gives?
"Not Now! Said the Cow" is essentially a fun rework of the book classic "Little Red Hen". In this book it's not a hen who finds wheat that is at the center of the action, but a crow who stumbles across a sack of corn seed. And instead of Hen's dog and cat friends who refuse to do a little work, it's a barnyard full of critters who refuse to get involved, at least not until the very end when the Crow turns the corn into popcorn.
This book is listed as a Level 2 reader which the publisher defines as being for "children who are just beginning to read by themselves but may need a little help." I have `searched' and found it listed on various education sites as a first or second grade reader.
In any case, this book is not for newly emergent readers. There are too many words per page, contractions, and the vocabulary that is not simple enough. [I have a beginning reader - just turned 6.]
Vocabulary includes words like: shelled, built, fire, popcorn, shuck, brayed, baaed, mooed, donkey, squealed, burning, whinnied, etc.
Here is a page from the middle of the book so you can judge for yourself:
"Not my job," grunted the Hog.
"Don't be funny," squealed the Bunny.
"Why me?" brayed the Donkey.
"Nix, nix!" peeped the Chicks.
"I'm asleep," baaed the Sheep.
"Not now," mooed Cow.
"Oh," cawed Crow. "Then I will do it
ALL BY MYSELF."
Five Stars. [A-]. Good Read-aloud. Cute artwork. Has a moral. Good book for toddlers on up. First Graders should find it an interesting/satisfying read. We borrowed it from the library and are now looking for a copy for our own.
This is an excellent book!.......2000-06-30
The repeated rhymes in this book allow the beginner to memorize the words by sight quickly. It is a zany twist on the famed little red hen story. It is a delightful book!

In this frank discussion of the field's purpose, identity, and responsibility, the authors examine the major issues that must be addressed if children are to be given more and better opportunities. At the JRTC, soldiers are trained for war in a setting so real you can almost smell the smoke.
Customer Reviews:
Bravo Company.......2005-02-08
First off, Col. Bolger was a great battalion commander who gave NCOs and Officers who screwed up second chances, something that was unheard of in the 101st Airborne Division at the time. What we learned at JRTC is, a leader must adapt his training to the environment and this case, the environment is MILES or laser warfare. You can't tell me the OPFOR would run around behind small bushes when a rifle Platoons SAW's and 60's are blazing, it just wouldn't happen. The enemy would break contact if the weren't cut down in a wall of lead. But we learned to be effective in an environment where small groups of soldiers who carry butt packs, wear boonie caps, and spend every waking minute zeroing their MILES lasers is, you have to do the same...that's what good leaders do. So we spent months perfecting the art of MILES warfare and honed our call for fire skills and essentially turned the tables on the OPFOR. We coined the "system" earth pigs!
I've been through JRTC six times and the most effective units are the units who spread their units out, spend a lot of time zeroing their MILES, and have good casevac plans.
I was a team leader in Bravo Company and during the first rotation and like SSG Eric Bitzer said, the Company commander showed his incompetence by leaving our platoon in the open on the side of the hill after the initial assault. In leadership theory you learn about the emotional competency known as self regulation. I saw a company commander have a virtual breakdown on the objective after our platoon leader LIED on the radio about our location. Self regulation basically refers to your ability to regulate your own behaviour, speech, and emotions.
I served in units after where this kind of mistake would have led to the automatic relief of duty on the spot. Something the comapny commander in question liked to do with the soldiers under his charge. Didn't have your PVS7 on when it got dark? Automatic article 15, even if they didn't work. Great way to look out for your soldiers?
I think not.
If you want to see the deatils of a unit preparing for combat and the training involved, I recommend this book. Col. Bolger was one smart officer.
A Must Read for Anyone In Leadership.......2004-06-13
Daniel Bolger has done an excellent job explaining not only what goes on at the Joint Readiness Training Center, but he does much to explain how and why his first experience there was a bust and more importantly how he corrected his mistakes and performed outstandingly in a later opportunity. Excellent book on what goes into battlion level command.
I disagree with the reviewer complaining about jargon. If you are afraid of learning a little military jargon then you shouldn't be reading books about command and control. The small amount of jargon used in this book is easy to keep track of.
The fight for hunger hill.......2002-09-03
I am SSG Eric Bitzer I was there during this battle I was the Point Man for Bco 1/327inf when we hit the opfor the problem is not army doctrine but was in a decision that was made by the company commander of Bco 1/327 inf to stay on the objective after taking it instead of moving off the objective that all light units do. If we would have moved off the objective this battle would have been a total success. Remember that this book is from a Battialion commanders veiw not from a soldier that fought the battle Col. Bolger makes some great points and was also a great commander but the fault is not his it was with one of his company commanders.
An Excellent Primer for Light Infantry Training.......2001-02-05
This is another good book by COL Daniel Bolger, this time about his battalion's (101st ABN) rotations to JRTC in 1994 and 1995. Lots of great details and observations about JRTC and the OPFOR. Bolger's battalion was badly abused in its 1994 rotation and he decided to get even the next time, which was fortunately less than a year later. Bolger criticizes the Deliberate Decision Making Process (DDMP), big Tactical Operation Centers and suggests alternatives. Thought-provoking as always but I don't agree with everything he says. There is no doubt that the US Army's cumbersome DDMP is geared toward set-piece, short-term battles but Bolger's approach combines common sense with anti-staff bias to try and just avoid all that messy staff work. From the intelligence viewpoint, he is dead wrong because Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB) does save lives and it does take time to do it right. Bolger's command instincts are good, particularly about nitty gritty items like reducing soldier loads, but there is bias here that detracts from his message. For example, sometimes he says erroneous things, like the S-2 (intelligence officer) is on the S-3's staff (the S-2 works for the commander, not the S-3). Maps are poor.
Time to Revamp FM 7-10, FM 7-20, FM 7-30.......2000-07-18
The Battle for Hunger Hill should force the US Army Infantry School as well as the gurus at Ft Leavenworth to seriously consider re-writing current doctrine for light infantry units (especially with regard to Low Intensity Conflict and OOTW). The 1-327 Infantry proves again and again throughout the text that the "cookbook solution" (i.e. doctrine applied as dogma) is often the surest way to ensure one's own defeat. Rather, HOW to think instead of WHAT to think is the surest way to secure victory.
Any soldier or leader concerned with mission accomplishment and force protection through the artistic application of Maneuver Warfare (Auftragstaktik) simply MUST read this book. It is highly entertaining as well as informative. Indeed, any commander whose unit is scheduled for a rotation to JRTC should require every officer and NCO to read this book no later than twelve months out (thirty-six months out for RC units). You may go without it...but only at your own peril.

Book Description
The revolution in molecular genetics has given rise to the heady optimism that biology will soon explain all disturbances of mind and behaviour. In this important and necessary book, Julian Leff, a world-leading psychiatrist, counters this reductionist stance. Instead he emphasises what is known about the psychological, social and cultural factors underlying mental illness. In doing so, he addresses many serious and urgent questions. What exactly is the difference between sadness and depression? What are the difficulties in categorising psychiatric conditions? How are psychiatric diagnoses made in the first place? What is the influence of emotional relationships on psychiatric conditions? Is there a link between schizophrenia and socio-economic deprivation? How do public attitudes to mental illness affect choice of treatment? And, finally, what does this tell us about the cultural causes of mental illness?
