    Book Description

Anyone can learn these simple and fun methods for producing outstanding watercolor landscapes and flowers. One of the reasons that Roland's first book has been so popular (Fill Your Watercolors with Light & Color--over 65,000 copies sold) is that his techniques make watercolor fun and successful for a great number of otherwise frustrated artists.

Roland has a gift for simplifying the process of painting into a few readily understood steps. In this book, he expands the teaching of his pouring technique and goes into the underlying structure of a painting. He presents a unique way of teaching composition that will delight the reader. He then presents his three-step process of painting a landscape--masking to preserve the lights, pouring on the atmosphere and spattering the textures. Next, he shows two great techniques for painting flowers, a subject that does not appear in his first book. Also included is a chapter of fun experimental techniques that readers are sure to enjoy and another chapter that answers some frequently asked questions.

    * Enables any artist to produce landscapes and flowers, two of the most popular painting subjects
    * This author has a proven sales track record

It was a surprise when the book was delivered in a couple days, I had expected a week. It is in superb condition. Impressive seller and delivery.

4 out of 5 stars Nice loose painting.......2003-08-19

This is a nice book for soft landscapes. However, I don't use it nearly as much as I thought I would. Check out the authors style first, and if you really like it...then the book is for you. I use some techniques, but the subject matter is a little soft for me. I didn't stay interested enought to use the lessons, but I did read it through and apply concepts to some of my own work.

5 out of 5 stars These techniques are nothing short of fantastic!.......2001-12-24

I love these books by Roycraft. If you love painting landscape or natural subjects, you cannot go wrong reading this book. Roycraft's techniques look simple (a lot of splashing going on) but they are controlled and well thought out. If you love floral painting you should not miss his examples here of a peony and an iris. JUST Breathtaking. I picked up so many ideas from this book.

Not only are Roycraft's paintings beautiful to see, he knows how to communicate his techniques incredibly well. I'm glad I found this watercolor artist's books.

5 out of 5 stars A power tool for watercolorists.......2001-08-09

Having read "enough" art technique books, I have learned that until one gets "down and dirty" trying out what is discussed in the book, then one does not actually spend the money wisely (on the book).

The same for this book. Beautiful artwork by the author. Did I say beautiful? No, BREATHTAKING, rather. However, to be able to generate beautiful artworks, the readers will need the following:

    - An ability to SEE (light, dark, positive and negative space)

    - Follow instructions from the book (which is PROBABLY the easy part, since it is rather well-written)

    - A decent craftsmanship to finesse the final painting after the "mask and pour paints" phase of the process.

Briefly, I would think this is a power tool for watercolorists. How great the final products turn out to be will depend on the aforementioned factors.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

      Book Description

Family photographs--snapshots and portraits, affixed to the refrigerator or displayed in gilded frames, crammed into shoeboxes or cataloged in albums--preserve ancestral history and perpetuate memories. Indeed, photography has become the family's primary means of self-representation. In Family Frames Marianne Hirsch uncovers both the deception and the power behind this visual record.

Hirsch provocatively explores the photographic conventions for constructing family relationships and discusses artistic strategies for challenging those constructions. When we capture our family photographically, we are often responding to an idealized image. Contemporary artists and writers, Hirsch shows, have exposed the gap between lived reality and a perceived ideal to witness contradictions that shape visual representations of parents and children, siblings, lovers, or extended families. Exploring fiction, "imagetexts," and photographic essays, she elucidates their subversive devices, giving particular attention to literal and metaphorical masks. While permitting false impressions and misreadings, family photos have also proved a powerful means for shaping personal and cultural memory. Hirsch highlights a striking example: the wide variety of family pictures surviving the Holocaust and the wrenching displacements of late-twentieth-century history. Whether personal treasures, artistic constructions, or museum installations, these images link private memory to collective history.

Zot's great, you won't be buying this book without knowing a little about this strangely wholesome upbeat & optimistic superhero. All the angst is supplied by jenny his self doubting human girlfriend, and even she's pretty cheerful most of the time. The book is a straightforward copilation of Zot issues 11-15 and 17-18, but unlike volume one this book is in black and white, so be warned, but I still enjoyed it.

If you are a comics aficionado , this book is a must read. Scott McCloud is one of the few creators of this generation who has not only demonstrated the depth that can be achieved in the comics medium, but has also made it accessible to all of us. The superhero plot may or may not grab you, but it's the story's characters and McCloud's storytelling style that will grab you and keep hold of you. If you're a fan of Mark Waid and Kurt Busiek, this work is well worth checking out. Even if you despise "superhero" comics, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. After fourteen years, these stories still represent a "high water" mark in American comics.

5 out of 5 stars Delving into normal lifes of the abnormal heroes.......1997-07-02

Scott McCloud's Zot! is simply amazing. For those of us who actually have hope, it will not be wasted on this sci-fi but not far stretched sentimental story of a simple boy who overcomes all odds to reach something glorious in life. Not only is the storyline enjoyable, but the plot keeps you rolling with deep character involvement, and actually shows flaws in the characters, which keeps them all stronger each chapter. Very suspeneful with his mastery of simple actions and language. I loved it

            Book Description

In this evocative memoir, Brent Staples poses some compelling questions: Where does the family end the self begin? What do we owe our families and what do we owe ourselves? What part of the past is a gift and what part a shackle?

As the oldest son among nine children, Brent grew up in a small industrial town near Philadelphia. Scholarship opportunities pulled him out of the black world where he had grown up into a world largely defined by whites. Meanwhile, as the industries that supported his hometown failed, and drug dealing rushed in to fill the economic void, news of arrests and premature deaths among Brent's childhood friends underscored his precarious perch in a mostly white environment. The death of his younger brother -- a cocaine dealer murdered by one of his "clients" -- propelled Brent into a reconsideration of his childhood that offers vivid portraits of family values that supported, pressures that tore apart, and the appeal and pain of living as an adult in a world that was literally and figuratively miles away from the one he knew as a child.

            4 out of 5 stars Parallel Time.......2006-10-27

New York Times editorial writer Brent Staples tells the incredible stories of living life as a young black man in America in his memoir, Parallel Time. Staples uses incredible detail of both physical surroundings and human emotion as he paints a clear and relatable image of his youth. His honest description of his own naiveté and foolishness leads the reader to trust and care for his character as he struggles with the issues of family, romance, and independence.
Growing up with a drunken father, several moves from house to house, grocery store debt, and a drug dealing brother, Staples has no shortage of material to write about. He chooses his scenes carefully, developing each major change in life through a series of smaller events that make his feelings more apparent. Instead of simply discussing the feelings of shame he had from leaving store after store with a mountain of debt from products purchased on credit, he tells a story of his most shameful moment to provide a more interesting and real emotion to his character. After accidentally entering the wrong store, Staples was forced to make small talk with shop owner. As he was leaving the shop owner asked him to return and pay his debts, Staples recalls, "My face was hot with shame" (109). Having an alcoholic father left Staples with a yearning for a father figure. He transformed men in his life into heroes, and recalls how foolish he was to mimic them. Staples often described his older cousins as perfect individuals, whose "coolness" he would imitate. It is this type of honesty that helps develop the readers' trust.

"Parallel Time" was an interesting book. It told a story about Brent's life and his struggle to be a writer. The message I got out of this book was that you are your own person and that you have total control over your life. I was able to read and visualize how Brent grew up as a black child, and how hard it was. By reading this story I have a better picture of how difficult being black in America was.

Parallel Time was a very interesting book. I learned a lot about what he went through growing up. He had to deal with his father being an abusive alcoholic, and the obsitcals of growing up black and white. He went into good detail when he talked about each event that happend when he was young. he also talks about his brother being a drug dealer. He gives support of why his brother was already dead to him in his mind. He list all the things that were important to him. He was responsible in taking the role of his father. I feel that this is a good book to read if you are interested in seeing what it was like to grow up black in the 1960's.

            3 out of 5 stars Parallel Time.......2003-10-22

Parallel Time is a intresting book about blacks and whites. This book is about a black kid growing up in a black and white community. Brent Staples is good at expressing his feelings and thoughts. An example of this is he talks about his brother and also takes the role of his father. He also has a good way of showing the reader what is exactly going on. He shows detail in every chapter. This would be a great book to read if you are intrested in racism.

Sticks & Wires & Cloth is about escaping into the skies of a bygone era in a 1929-design biplane, an episodic log of the author's five years traveling around Texas and most of the rest of the United States. Anne Hopkins brings a fresh voice to writing about life in the skies, demystifying biplane flying much as Katherine Graham did newspaper publishing in her memoir. Firmly and patiently, Anne takes her reader by the hand, helps him into the front cockpit, and keeps him there through fair weather and foul, sharing moments of joy and terror. Her story is full of the details of coping with an old cramped aircraft, yet in the end she has left us savoring its magic and wonder. This is a book for everyone who ever thought about flying. It will remind pilots of all the good reasons they fly. It will propel those who have only dreamed of flying along the path toward that first flight. Those who know pilots will understand why to them flying is like breathing, an essential element of life. Those who have always feared flying will see that despite all the writing about calm and fearless pilots, pilots are sometimes afraid, too, but as the Anne writes in one chapter, "'Twas a Pleasing Fear."

4 out of 5 stars The Mighty Great Lakes Biplane.......2006-11-23

This book is a great thesis on why to fly. The folks you meet, the things you see, the places you go, the fear that reminds you that you are indeed still alive are all in there. Flitting about the country in a variety of old airplanes from flying chickens to Mexico in DC-3s, to flying the mountains and desert in open cockpit biplanes, I can identify with a lot of her tales which make it a uniquely personal book. Not only that, but having met the author, I will state before a notary public that she is courteous, professional and well groomed.

4 out of 5 stars Skybolt Pilot on Sticks & Wires & Cloth.......2006-03-12

I found the book exciting, and very interesting. As a Biplane pilot myself, I related to many of her experiences. I have desided to make an unplanned trip in my Skybolt this summer, to experience the same kind of adventure Anne Hopkins relates in her book. I have flown in many of the aeras of the country she tells about in her book, and it is interesting reading about them through the eyes of a fellow pilot. Whether you fly or not, you can experience the wind in your face and view life from the perspective of the early day barnstormers by reading Anne's book. My daughter is a pilot and I will be buying another copy for her. Good job Anne. I would be your wing man anytime you want.

              5 out of 5 stars Pure poetry..........2004-02-04

For everyone who has dreamed of flying off beyond the horizon, to adventures unknown, in a vintage open cockpit biplane.

And for those who have yet to dream this dream, this is the place to start. This dream comes with all the senses, to see the world as eagles do, to feel what it's like to touch a cloud with your fingers and face, the scents of forests and rivers, farms and oceans, the rumbling sounds of a trusted engine pulling you along...

To suggest that you read this book is to suggest that you do something beautiful for yourself...

              Pleasant dreams!

5 out of 5 stars A modern tale about flying as it was in the early days........2004-01-01

Anne Hopkins takes you back to the early days of flying - but her adventures have taken place in recent times. Her vivid descriptions of learning to handle an airplane designed in the 20's really captures your attention. Through her eyes, you learn that, even in the 21st century, there are still new vistas to explore and challenges to undertake.
The book itself is beautifully crafted with pictures carefully woven into each chapter. The cover photo shows Anne's biplane resting comfortable on a grass field - looking much more at home than on a big city runway - that is the environment for which it was designed. And her book tells the reader that this is the environment in which Anne feels most at home.

5 out of 5 stars A Love Story between a woman and her airplane.......2003-12-29

My copy of "Sticks & Wire & Cloth" arrived from Amazon.com on a Friday afternoon. I started reading it that evening and couldn't put it down -- I finished it that Saturday around 7PM! What a wonderful, magical book. It was a joy to read, and a joy to fly "behind Anne Hopkins' eyes" and watch the wonder of Nanna's flights and the country unfold beneath him. I can't get the book out of my head. I've been searching for a way to describe the feeling it gave me, and what finally occurred to me was a surprise. This is a love story between a woman and her Great Lakes biplane. Thank you, Anne, for sharing the romance with me.

When I read this book my feeling was, "if I could only write one book, I would wish for it to be like this!" It deserves a wide audience, which I hope it will enjoy. I've urged the book on friends, and I've already decided to buy several copies for friends for Christmas. This is a book which pilots will love of course, but its appeal is much broader -- to anyone who can take joy in freedom and in engaging life with a passion.

I discovered that Anne Hopkins has a website and was covering her barnstorming book promotion tour there. I logged on and was surprised to find that the tour ended in Tennessee. I was heartsick when I clicked on that locale and discovered why. I had just discovered Nanna, and now found that he might be lost. I hope that by now the news is better; after all, he apparently survived a flip over in the past, so perhaps after a lengthy recuperation...? Here's hoping that his recovery time is short. He and Anne have got a lot more flying to do.

              Book Description

From its very inception the United States Army Special Forces has been enmeshed in controversy, its mission misunderstood to varying degrees, and its very existence opposed by some of the Army hierarchy. Nevertheless it continues to serve in a highly specialised role in all manner of differing conditions. There can be few better qualified to chronicle the history of this unique organisation than former Special Forces Group weapons specialist Gordon Rottman, whose expert knowledge is clearly evident in this authoritative text. This volume also contains 12 full page colour plates by one of the world's most respected military artists, Ron Volstad.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading on early Special Forces history.......2003-12-05

Gordon Rottman is retired Special Forces and does a thorough job of covering early Special Forces history back to the days of the OSS and the WWII Ranger Battilions. He shows the different paths of development that have evolved into todays Green Berets and Ranger Battalions. There is good coverage given to the uniforms, various unit flashes and insignia on the color plates.
A worthwhile read for anyone interested in Special Forces history.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough, Meticulous and fascinating!.......1999-05-13

The author - a former Special Forces Soldier and combat veteran himself has done a fine job in presenting the Special Forces of the world in an interest and informative manner. A must read for anyone researching the Special Forces of the world - their missions and capabilities.

The book is written with an understanding that comes from being an insider to the SF community as well as a long time soldier. It is not only a fascinating read - it is also a valuable research tool. Highly recommended!

                  Book Description

Twenty years ago, John Cherry looked forward to the day when archaeological survey projects working around the Mediterranean region (the 'Frogs round the pond') would begin to compare and synthesize the information they had collected. He anticipated researchers tackling big questions of inter-regional scope in new and interesting ways, working at a geographical scale considerably larger than that of the individual survey. Was his optimism misplaced? Despite the extraordinary growth of interest in field survey projects and regional analysis, and despite the developments in survey methodology that have been discussed and implemented in the past two decades, few scholars have attempted to use survey data in a comparative mode and to answer the broad-scale questions confronting social historians. In this volume, which is the outcome of an advanced Workshop held at the University of Michigan in 2002, a number of prominent archaeologists return to the question of comparability. They discuss the potential benefits of working in a comparative format, with evidence from many different Mediterranean survey projects, and consider the practical problems that present roadblocks to achieving that objective. From mapping and manuring to human settlement and demography, environment and culture, each addresses different questions, often with quite different approaches; together they offer a range of perspectives on how to put surveys "side-by-side".

                      Book Description

A fascinating topic! A fascinating book! Quite often, science and art are considered as the "two cultures" dividing our society into two separate groups. However, important phenomena in science and art have a common root. By using the concept of broken symmetries the author enlightens the similarities between the process of creation of an art work and of a scientific theory, as well as the similarity between the process of perception and measurement. Symmetry is a no-change as the outcome of a change. In order to obtain information, the symmetry of an initially balanced system must be broken. The consequence is ambiguity, the critical point of any dynamical instability. Here the world of physics and emotional and rational spheres match. The dynamics of perception (the transformation leading to a choice) involve well known physical phenomena like symmetry, entropy and others. Many illustrations and a strict ratio between popular inserts and technical chapters make this a scintillating book explaining why sciences and arts have in common the feature of universality.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA MODELING VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS AND SIMULATION report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A951134. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Extensible Modeling and Simulation Framework (XMSF) is defined as a composable set of standards, profiles and recommended practices for web-based modeling and simulation. Markup languages based on XML, Internet technologies, and Web services are combining to enable a new generation of distributed M&S applications to emerge, develop and interoperate. The purpose of this task is to develop the technical framework, coordinate with existing public standardization efforts, and demonstrate distributed exemplars of the developed framework. This report describes work accomplished in 2004 by the XMSF project team consisting of Naval Postgraduate School Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulation (MOVES) Institute, George Mason University (GMU), Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), and Old Dominion University/Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (ODU/VMASC). Principal areas of work included ongoing community education and development activities through conference and workshop participation, liaison with relevant standards organizations, and development of exemplar applications demonstrating the technical approaches and applicable standards relevant to XMSF precepts. The report proposes follow-on efforts for 2005, including continuation of current efforts and further standardization work with multicasting, web-enabled IEEE 1516 Run-Time Infrastructure, data modeling in C2 and M&S systems, and executable architectures.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A528173. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The explosive growth of the Internet and the advent of real-time network applications have stretched the capacity of current network technology. It has become evident that to realize the full potential of the Information Super Highway a new network architecture would have to be developed. It was for these reasons the Next Generation Internet Project was started. As a part of this effort the Server and Agent based Active network Management (SAAM) Project was started. SAAM is a server based hierarchical routing architecture designed to provide Quality of Service (QoS) routing services for network resource intensive applications. Because the study of this topic entailed emulating large Wide Area Networks, a simulation of the entire architecture would have to be developed. This thesis provides the first step towards achieving that goal. The model developed as the basis for this thesis concentrates on the control traffic overhead required to configure and implement the routing mechanism of SAAM. Specifically it simulates the control channel dynamics required to pass control messages between servers, routers and real-time applications.

                            Description:
We introduce and axiomatize dynamic variational preferences, the dynamic version of the variational preferences we axiomatized in [F. Maccheroni, M. Marinacci, A. Rustichini, Ambiguity aversion, robustness, and the variational representation of preferences, Mimeo, 2004], which generalize the multiple priors preferences of Gilboa and Schmeidler [Maxmin expected utility with a non-unique prior, J. Math. Econ. 18 (1989) 141-153], and include the Multiplier Preferences inspired by robust control and first used in macroeconomics by Hansen and Sargent (see [L.P. Hansen, T.J. Sargent, Robust control and model uncertainty, Amer. Econ. Rev. 91 (2001) 60-66]), as well as the classic Mean Variance Preferences of Markovitz and Tobin. We provide a condition that makes dynamic variational preferences time consistent, and their representation recursive. This gives them the analytical tractability needed in macroeconomic and financial applications. A corollary of our results is that Multiplier Preferences are time consistent, but Mean Variance Preferences are not.

                                Description:
Objective: To examine the relationship between role ambiguity and role efficacy within the context of sport teams from a multilevel perspective. Methods: Secondary school rugby and field hockey players (n=277) comprising 33 intact teams completed the Role Ambiguity Scale [Group Dyn. Theor. Res. Pract. 6 (2002) 229] at the beginning of a competitive season. One month later measures of role efficacy were also obtained. Multilevel models were examined in relation to the sport-specific contexts of offence and defence. Results and conclusions: Role ambiguity accounted for 20.70% of the total variance in role efficacy on offence and 22.45% on defence. For both offensive and defensive models, role ambiguity was able to explain individual- and group-level variances in role efficacy. However, in both cases, the majority of variance was captured at the individual level. Results highlight the explanatory value of examining nested data using multilevel frameworks when examining cognition, affect, and behaviour in interdependent environments such as sport teams. Findings are discussed in terms of possible mechanisms through which role ambiguity and role efficacy might be related.
