THE GREAT NEUTRA.......2007-03-03
This book is the benchmark on Richard Neutra's work, it's thorough, has wonderful, vivid images, and the text is scholarly, but easy to read. I have always been a huge fan of Mr. Neutra's work, it is so clean, open, and modern. His buildings really fit Southern California perfect, the sunshine and the dry ocean breezes meld well with his modern asthetic. If you have any interest in Moderne architecture or are just a fan of the singular Mr. Neutra, then I highly recommend this book.
novel or document?.......2001-12-09
to an architect the purpose of this book is unclear. The subject is an architect with an extremely interesting life, who designed very interesting buildings. The subtitle of the book gives us the impression that the book is about architecture. In reality it only gives us a very poor impression of the buildings designed by Neutra: only very small pictures are displayed of what he designed. family snap-shots on the other hand, are everywhere and in larger sizes.
Of course this can be a purpose of the writer. However, the uncritical way and blind admiration for Neutra makes the book boring to read and tiresome.
I suggest that anyone that is interested in the works of Neutra buy another book, with better, and more pictures of his buildings and floor plans to go with them. His buildings deserve it.

this is an excellent account of the life and works of richard neutra. i would recommend this book to anyone interested in modern architecture, both regionally and internationally. More color images would have been appreciated, although this does not detract from the overall attractiveness of the book.
Excellent overall view of Neutra's work and his life story........1999-10-24
The classic Neutra companion; very informative. Although I would have liked to have seen current color photographs of the great RJN's work along with the extensive B&W ones (actually I believe a volume of that nature is in the works), this retrospective is nonetheless very broad in its scope and has many interesting stories about the building of the structures during Neutra's life. Also contains a complete list of his buildings and houses, along with locations and dates of construction.

I just received Wildlife Painting Basics by Jeanne Scott. What a nice book! Its full of great information and even better illustrations of her work. This artist obviously studies her subjects and renders them well. More importantly she is not afraid to share her knowledge. Her approach is clear and easily understood. Its a good addition to anyone's art library.
Enjoyable Paintings and Easy-to-Follow Instructions.......2002-05-02
Jeanne Filler Scott's book appeals to people who enjoy small animals as well as those who aspire to painting or drawing them.
She obviously has much familiarity with these kinds of animals and enjoys their company. Her commentary includes personal anecdotes about her interactions with her subjects, as well as easy to follow instructions for painting them, or simply understanding the color and detail of their anatomy.
Her book fills a needed niche in small animal painting instruction. Her step by step approach and honest, detailed descriptions of how to achieve painting effects will enable anyone interested in painting or drawing to create beautiful renderings of these animals. The animals showcased in her book include: rabbits, squirrels, foxes, raccoons, woodchucks, otters, mice, hamsters, ferrets, guinea pigs, gerbils, prairie dogs and chipmunks.
Jeanne Filler Scott has been included in numerous wildlife art books and magazines. This, her first book, is an excellent, clearly illustrated and clearly written work, and will undoubtedly become a collectable. Enjoy it!

Very Nice!... Great Coffee Table Book.......2007-01-22
If you are a fan of the N.B.A. as I am, then you will thoroughly enjoy this colorful collection of NBA greats. I received it as a gift and I never get tired of looking through it. Any fan of photography will also enjoy this as well because many of these photos are just so breathtakingly beautiful. Everytime I view this collection (175 photos in all) I see something new and interesting. Walter Iooss Jr. has truly put together a treasure trove of photos and it's easy to see why he is one of the most well respected photographers that Sports Illustrated has ever had. If you love basketball or know someone that loves basketball this is a great book to own. It is also a rather well put together collage of NBA history and many of the photos brought back fond, vivid memories of my childhood idols. This is worth every penny and I was very lucky to receive it as a gift. (Thanks again mom!) I hope you enjoy it as well. I have a very good feeling you will!

Steven Crist, Betting on Myself: Adventures of a Horseplayer and Publisher (DRF Press, 2004)
Crist's surprisingly readable "my life thus far" autobiography is probably stuck with a built-in limit to the numbers of readers who are going to be intrigued by it. This is a mistake not by Crist, but by those readers who don't think they're going to like a "horse book."
Crist traces the path he took from his years at Harvard, when he first discovered greyhound racing, to his present position as the owner of the Daily Racing Form. In between there's a lot of other fun stuff to interest both the horseplayer and the general reading audience: a stint with the New York Times, various discussions of economics (as it pertains to horse racing, granted, but money is money), the political scene in Albany, and all the other good stuff a dirt-dishing autobiography is supposed to have. (Kitty Kelley readers, however, will be depressed to note that Crist has been married to the same woman since Methuselah was a pup, and if there's any steppin' out involved, it never gets mentioned. Which may explain why Crist, and not Kelley, wrote this book.) It's also exceptionally readable for non-fiction, and a lot of fun in the bargain. A lot of fun. ****

The nearby review - Well Written Memoir from a Fascinating Person - got all the details of a review right, so I don't need to repeat them. Enthusiastic individual believes in himself, makes good, but fails (hardly by accident) to reveal some of the "secrets" of parimutuel betting success. Kind of like that magician who just won't explain how he cut the lady in half.
Crist Cashes In A Winner.......2004-02-23
It's always interesting to read and learn about the behind-the-scenes action that takes place during the business ventures of which the general public is not usually aware. In BETTING ON MYSELF, Steven Crist is a horseplayer who had ideas to improve the information provided to gamblers by creating an alternative publication to The Daily Racing Form (DRF). Instead, as this well written memoir details, Crist became chairman and publisher of DRF. His story serves as another example of a person who fulfills his goals and proves that luck is directly proportional to hard work applied to opportunity.

I Found This To Be Both Entertaining And Insightful.
It Is Amazing How This Individual Can Be Such A Corporate Magnate, Harvard Graduate But Yet Still Relate And Identify With The "Common Horseplayer".His Insight Ito The Interworkings Of Handicapping And Trying To Survive AS A Horseplayer Are A Must Read. I Did However Think To Much Copy Was Spent On His Relationship With The NYRA. I Would Have Loved To Have Seen More Print On His Personal On-Track Tales.
Crisp Gets it Right.......2003-09-20
Race track fans and journalists will enjoy Crisp's bright and insighful discussion about his experiences in both worlds. His ideas about the future of thoroughbred horseracing are interesting and his discussion about his betting experiences will ring true with any died-in-the-wool throughbred race fan. A fun read.

Wolf's treatment of a so ideological subject, peasant wars, shows all the tallent and capacity of a intellectual who worked mainly in the US, although he was born in Austria. This fact helps us to understand a littlle more of his work as an anthropologist aware of the importance of a renewed history. Eric Wolf left Europe after an experience in the nazi's concentration camp in World War II. In this camp, he met and had classes with Norbert Elias. Some people say this is a fundamental fact on Wolf's career, because, as we can see, the problematic of power undergoes all along his opus. In Peasant Wars, Eric, worried about the US involvement in the Vietnam conflict, tries to understand how peasant people get involved with revolution. In order to understand this fact, Eric studies six cases of peasant revolution in the twentieth century: Mexico, Russia, Nigeria, China, Vietnam and Cuba. As the analysis goes through, we can almost smell the tallent of Eric, because although he were a marxist, the study don't fall in dogmatism. This book is essential to all the people who wants to understande the contemporary world.

This study of popular protest and resistance in Ethiopia focuses on three important peasant-based rebellions that occurred between 1941 and 1970. The author attempts to uncover certain key features of popular protest in pre-revolutionary Ethiopia. Drawing upon ample evidence, he concludes that these revolts were not a consequence of capitalist exploitation, as was usually the case in most Third World countries, but were connected with the rise of a modern, bureaucratic, multi-ethnic national state. Ethiopian peasants were neither conservative nor compliant, as is often assumed, although their defiance was nevertheless essentially non-revolutionary. These interesting and fresh findings also suggest a possible explanation for the eruption and intensification of armed conflict in rural Ethiopia after 1974. On a theoretical level, the study makes a significant contribution to the ongoing analysis of social movements in agrarian societies.

In 1938 when Hitler annexed Austria making it part of his Greater German Reich, approximately 185,000 Jews lived in Vienna. Unlike their counterparts in Germany proper, these Jews had only a short time to make plans to emigrate. The development and application of racially discriminatory policies in Germany took nearly five years to come to full fruition. In Austria, the ruthless attempts at exclusion of the Jewish population from both social and economic institutions took barely five months.
The editor and his parents were among the few individuals who were fortunate to gain entrance into the United States during this time of crisis. Four days before their departure, the U.S. visa stamped in their passports was the only thing that saved the three from deportation to Poland. The Sechers unavoidably left behind five members of their immediate family who were still waiting to receive visas, but they firmly believed, even as rumors of further restrictive policies against the Jews circulated, that the remaining members of their family would be well out of reach of Nazi policies designed to remove Jews from their homes.
There is a lengthy introduction, but the major part of the book is a chronological arrangement of the many letters exchanged between the father and mother and those individuals left behind in Vienna. The letters tell a story of the struggles the remaining five faced in their efforts to stay alive. Of the five persons who contributed to this correspondence, only Fanny Secher (the author's paternal grandmother) died a natural death. The others were deported and never heard from again.
