Safety is an instinctive need that has guided human choices throughout history. Now more than ever, it has become not only a focus, but almost an obsession. Designers are trained to mediate between disruptive change and normalcy and can soothe people's anxiety. When scientific revolutions happen, they translate them into objects that people can understand and use. Good design provides protection and security without sacrificing the need to innovate and invent. I'm more of a pictures kind of guy, so this book was especially pleasing. Intriguing applications of "safey on the job" design, illustrated nicely with generous photos and diagrams.

Quality Images.......2000-04-19

My application of Mr. Sibbett's designs begin with their being scanned. As with all his books the quality of the images in this book are very good. I appreciate the slight similiarity between some images that lend themselves well to making matching items. A variety of designs from simple to more complex are offered. At most their are two to a page making them easy to work with.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I wish I had a copy of it. It is about a tradional Japanese form of packaging different things, mostly food. The idea behind it is that when you present someone with a cake, say, and its nicely packaged they get the idea that you hope they enjoy the cake.
The five eggs of the title are sort of stacked up and bound with straw woven in an ingenious way. The photographs are lovely and the descriptions of the various packages are informative as well as evocotive. I once had the chance to see
How To Wrap Five Eggs at the Japan Society Library. Boy I wish I had that one too.

I got my hands on this book recently. Its a book which says most of the story through pictures. Its amazing to see how advanced Japanese ancient art is and how much we can learn about them.

CNN's Lynne Russell is probably the only prime-time anchor with a second-degree black belt, and we're darn certain that she's the only one with multiple tattoos. Not to mention the only one who moonlights as a private investigator and bodyguard. In How to Win Friends, Kick Ass & Influence People, Russell--whose language gets awfully sassy and salty when the cameras aren't rolling--tells readers how she managed to overcome a disastrous first marriage and started a career in broadcast journalism that's now approaching its fourth decade. (The records show that Russell is in her early 50s, against all visible evidence suggesting otherwise.) She also has lots of advice for women, mostly encouraging her readers to "dare to be yourself" at work and play. But there are all sorts of interesting digressions, including tips on how to flirt in Paris (this section also reveals the usefulness of self-defense training; when a masher tried to get fresh at a movie theater, she silently took his hand in hers, then bent a finger back until she heard it snap). Edward R. Murrow might be spinning in his grave for all we care, but How to Win Friends, Kick Ass & Influence People is a fun, sexy read.

This book appropriately glosses over Russell's private life and manages to balance professionalism, entertainment, assertion, humor and sometimes sarcasm about life at CNN -- the silly things some viewers or youthful subordinates will say and do, the surprising things a famous anchor will do when stuck in a brutal Atlanta traffic jam during scheduled airtime.

Luckily, Russell's perspective extends well beyond her CNN duties to reflect on her role as a go-getter and as a woman in her numerous other ongoing careers.

While she has no doubt inspired many women over the years to live uncompromisingly for one's goals and dreams, she also has inspired men like me -- from an early age -- to see career women as well-rounded, smart, savvy, and critical to an organization's success. At CNN and in her book, Lynne Russell has helped make professional journalism sexy to a new generation, male and female.

Victoria's Secret.......2001-05-23

If the title of this book offends you, do not buy the book because the content is equally earthy. How much did Victoria's Secret pay for this 200 page ad? If you are mildly curious about the various behind the scene exploits of CNN headline news anchor this book satisfies. If you want personal advice there are better sources. One wonders, what will she spend her money on after her hormones change? Have the stories about poor starving opressed people in her news had no impact on her choices? I hope that this is not the last we will hear from Ms. Russell!

Not for the meek.......2000-11-24

First of all, know that this is not exactly a "self-help" book, and Russell is not really attempting to provide an instruction for life when she offers advice; in fact, the title seems more of an ironic commentary on a life not lived by reading handbooks and following guidelines. That said, this can still be an inspiring read for women and a delight to men who are not afraid of independent, intelligent women. Those who know Russell as a talking head on TV may be taken aback by her off-camera persona, but that's what makes her unique: the woman who enunciates so well on CNN will be putting dents in a heavy bag with her bare feet and peppering her speech with the "f" word after hours. She won't pander to fragile egos: she calls 'em like she sees 'em because she's likely seem 'em all, more than once, as a journalist, a private investigator, and as a woman. No pretense or phony sentimentality like many of her male collagues, folks: this woman tells it like it is. Russell is a refreshing break from the utter pomposity of people like Ted Koppel and Tom Brokaw, and neither of those guys could kick your face in, either. LYNNE RUSSELL RULES!

What kind of friends would you win by reading this?.......2000-01-22

Russell's slim volume is a jaded, cynical whirlwind of hackneyed metaphors ("Isn't that what Xena would do?") and knee-jerk advice for those who want to reduce people to quick, sound-byte sized definitions. I don't believe that "all women are questioning the very definition of love" (p. 149), just those that have finished reading this book and want to pattern themselves on the author. And can anyone, male or female, take seriously Russell's pigeonholing of personality types? It seems she wants to encourage women to find a deep, lasting relationship by using shallow, witty-for-the-moment quips that will most likely be forgotten faster than last month's headline news.

Lynne Russell's Book Well Worth The Read.......2000-01-07

Lynne Russell is now not only an esteemed journalist, but a wonderful author. Her gusty advice and view of things is very refreshing, and her wonderful personality and spunk shines through every page. This book is really directed toward women, but men seem to enjoy it. Anybody who's a Lynne Russell fan or just wants an extremely wonderful book, should read this.

The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) found Americans on new terrain. A republic founded on the principle of armed defense of freedom was now going to war on behalf of Manifest Destiny, seeking to conquer an unfamiliar nation and people. Through an examination of rank-and-file soldiers, Paul Foos sheds new light on the war and its effect on attitudes toward other races and nationalities that stood in the way of American expansionism.

Drawing on wartime diaries and letters not previously examined by scholars, Foos shows that the experience of soldiers in the war differed radically from the positive, patriotic image trumpeted by political and military leaders seeking recruits for a volunteer army. Promised access to land, economic opportunity, and political equality, the enlistees instead found themselves subjected to unusually harsh discipline and harrowing battle conditions. As a result, some soldiers adapted the rhetoric of Manifest Destiny to their own purposes, taking for themselves what had been promised, often by looting the Mexican countryside or committing racial and sexual atrocities. Others deserted the army to fight for the enemy or seek employment in the West. These acts, Foos argues, along with the government's tacit acceptance of them, translated into a more violent, damaging variety of Manifest Destiny.

A significant dissappointment.......2006-11-09

While I had initial high hopes for this book, unfortunately within 30 pages I found it to be quite unsatisfying. First, Foos' prose is so full of theory and jargon, he's fallen into the trap many (most?) academics do, which is to say, they have turned an interesting subject into an unreadable monstrosity. The books lacks lucidity, and is rather an academic study that bored this reader considerably. Why Foos can't just say what he has to say in clear, readable language is unclear.
Second, there's no conherent, overall narrative of the Mexican War here! Foos never tells the STORY of the war so as to provide context, but jumps right into the matter as if he has provided some kind of background. We never learn why the US is fighting the war, what were its major events, etc. The fact that the words "Alamo" and "Texas" do not appear in the index is telling. Foos's editor should also be held responsible for putting out such a jumbled mess as this as well.
In short--I do not recommend this book at all.

An unflinching and brutal look at the horrors of war.......2003-03-09

A Short, Offhand Killing Affair: Soldiers And Social Conflict During The Mexican-American War by Paul Foos (History Department, Georgia State University - Atlanta) draws directly upon diaries and letters of soldiers in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), to survey and examine a bitterly fought conflict which was to change the shape of the emerging American nation. Offering an unflinching and brutal look at the horrors of war as sufferingly experienced by rank-and-file soldiers (as well as the violent, sometimes murderous and ravaging behavior many such soldiers exacted upon the inhabitants of the territory they conquered), A Short, Offhand Killing Affair fully and dramatically reveals a ruthless and darker aspect of what came to be called America's "Manifest Destiny".

This lucidly written history of how American soldiers were lured into service for a supposedly noble cause and then discovered themselves in a confounding situation couldn't be more timely. Issues of racism and nationalism are shown to be as alive then as they are today.
