Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very good book for the beginner.......2007-04-11

The book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis well, mainly statically determinate structures. The book also covers design fundamentals for various materials, mainly: wood, steel, concrete and masonry.

I used an earlier version of this book many years ago, as an introductory book. The book is good for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Simplified for better understanding.......2006-11-05

This Book is excellent. easy to read and understand. this book has given me all the info i needed and then some. i highly reccommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book.......2000-04-05

This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry) followed by the design of the structural system for a building. I first used an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduate degree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The present edition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of the earlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections and updating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis is placed on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and there are numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book is excellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis and design or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for a while and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the first step and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to follow up on this with other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's "Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steel structures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's "Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders".

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Watercolor Introduction.......2006-05-11

*****
I am a total beginner to watercolor---actually, to any type of painting, and this book was very helpful and easy to understand. I expect that the more I paint, though, the more I'll use it, as the information seemed to be insightful ideas that more advanced artists could also use. I read the entire book before I picked up a brush (as it was my sole introduction to watercolor) and I'm glad I did.

The book is organized in a question and answer format and grouped into: paper and painting surfaces; brushes and their care; paints and palettes; combining colors, water, paper, and brushes; tonal values; painting outdoors, on location and from life; and "is this a mistake or a creative opportunity?". The last chapter was most interesting, with actual examples of salvaged paintings---before and after.

The book was peppered with encouraging advice and information about being an artist, a painter. I loved reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not that good.......2004-11-03

I just checked the website listed below and the book is now $39.95 not including shipping. I have gotten this book several times from the library and I particularly like her use of a "funny brush." And the exercise in the book on mixing greens I did in an art class and that has been very useful. However, the information in the rest of the book can be found in other books. In my opinion, the book is not worth the $46 to $60 it would now cost to buy. Maybe Northlight Books will offer an updated version of this book in the near future ??? If the book was normally priced, I would probably buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Tip for purchasing this book.......2004-01-30

As this book is out of print, I tried to buy a used copy. Amazon booksellers are selling used/new copies today for between $45 and $99!

However, I just ordered a copy directly from the authors website - autographed too! - for $24.99 + $6 shipping.
see: www.catherineanderson.net

Maybe this will help others who have been searching too.

I wanted you to know that I find your book the most encouraging and helpful of all the books I have seen. Your philosophy on just going for it and not worrying about any rules is the best.

Book Description

The Brown Sisters presents a photographic project as compelling in effect as it is simple in conception: four women, 25 years. Each year since 1975 photographer Nicholas Nixon has made a group portrait of his wife and her three sisters facing the camera in the same order: Heather, Mimi, Bebe, and Laurie. The series now measures a quarter century in the lives of the sisters, who in 1975 ranged in age from 15 to 25; each picture is dense with allusions to the year of experience that separates it from the one before.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An unpretentious masterpiece.......2000-05-01

Many of us are called to do this kind of project. Few of us choose to do it because we fear we can't.

Several years ago I saw two of the "Brown Sisters" and never forgot them. "I hope he keeps this up, but I doubt he can. Relationships change. People's goals change. People are vain." So I thought until I read the dedication and thanks in the front of this book years later.

This work ranks with Stieglitz's accidental portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe. Stieglitz, however, makes you want to know a beautiful and unique woman through his poetic intimatcy. Nixon makes you want to know someone as well as he knows the Brown sisters, perhaps as well as they know each other, through a simple directness that few of us have the courage to see or show to each other.

Photography is about time. The Brown Sisters remind us that the value of time is measured by the respect we give each other. This work is direct, primitive and undeniable. It has what Malraux called the sense of inevitability.

I suspect that the older you are the more you will get from this portrait. If you are young, yow will remember it it 10, 20, 30 and more years from now.

If this book doesn't move you, you are either in denial or you should seek some new line of work that doesn't require you to be alive.

3 out of 5 stars Wake me when you're done.......2000-04-18

This is interesting but other than the timespan not that moving. Good for Nick Nixon that he uses a 8X10 view camera. So what? Good for the Brown sisters that, over time, their relationship with each other changes. I hope it contunues to follow a happy and loving course. The book is a real snooze though. Sorry gang, I left this one on the MOMA bookshelf and suggest you do the same.

5 out of 5 stars My inspiration.......2000-02-12

No words can describe the work of this photographer. He is in My humble opinion the greatist photographer of the century. Im honored to have been part of his instruction.

I love hearing about Jessica Savitch, and what you didn't see when you saw her on TV. This book focuses more then half, on Networks, and broadcasting in general, following mostly NBC, but does include something about all the networks. I would rather have heard more about Jessica herself. If you have seen the movie with Ron Silver and Sela Ward, that pretty much sums up the portion of this book that is actually devoted to Savitch. Though she was admired for her aggressive role in the female aspect of tv journalism, you see first hand that she wasn't qualified to do half of what they asked her to do, and was simply a pretty face who read copy that was written by other people.
I find her emotional issues very relatable (anorexia, drug addiction, abusive relationships.) She lived a long hard life in her short 36 years.

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of Stardom.......2002-01-22

I inherited this book in a box of used books that someone brought over when they left Belize. As such, it sat on my shelf for a while before I reluctantly started it. It didn't take long to hook me.

First of all, it is a history of the selling of TV news; with all of the familiar and unfamiliar names in that business. Stories of now major star when they were first starting out. The sequences of presidents and vice-presidents in the Networks. This may be turget prose to soap-opera fans attracted to the book by the beauty on the cover, but it was interesting to me.

Secondly, it is the agonizing history of Jessica Savitch, obsessively driven to be the queen of Network News, privately anguished by memories of her father, who let her down by dying when she was 12 (he was 31), and more publically tortured by a long distructive co-dependent relationship with Ron Kershaw, another TV news luminary, and the scorn of her co-workers, who hated her self-centered focus on her success.

A young ambitious wannabee in showbiz can learn a lot from this book. I learned:
    1. It takes incredible drive (even obsession) to be successful in a competitive business like Network News.
    2. You will probably lose all your friends and your life (figuratively, if not literally)
    3. Altho you may look happy and successful in public, you may actually be miserable in the midst of it all.
    4. Whether you deserve it or not, success is probably more a matter of fortune. In the long run -- scum as well as cream rises to the top.

I already knew these things from a lifetime of living in the very competitive computer business (full of smart, ambitious, driven people) but it underlined an old cliche' -- "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."

    5 out of 5 stars LEADER OF A GENERATION.......1999-03-07

Though out of print, this bio can be found in used bookstores everywhere. Because once you read it, you'll want rid of it. Way depressing. Beautiful Jessica Savitch had everything: looks, verve, charm, talent, a personality...she even anchored the NBC evening news (she was actually the White House correspondent, but NBC exploited her in every way imaginable) at age 30! Co-workers considered her a prima donna, but the ratings gods loved her - even when she apologized to the viewership for being absent for a couple of days (it was already well known she'd had an abortion). Her cocaine and alcohol addiction not-with-standing, she was the charter representative of the Baby-Boom generation. After appearing on a "Newsbreak" during which she was so thick tongued one couldn't understand what she was saying, Jessica suffered a nervous breakdown, and retreated from public view.During her recovery, she died in an automobile accident. Her life's chronicle bears an eerie resemblance to another blonde heroine - Princess Di. Remarkable, and deeply troubling.

        Book Description

On March 1, 1999, American safari guide Mark Ross was camping with four clients in Uganda searching for endangered mountain gorillas. By day's end, two of these clients and six other tourists were dead at the hands of Rwandan rebels. As a man who loves East Africa, Ross felt betrayed by this horror, which made headlines around the world. He writes, 'The continent has always been the love of my life. Now there is trouble between us.' Dangerous Beauty is the story of that love and trouble. Ross writes here about his close-up encounters with danger and natural beauty in Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Uganda. He describes his walks in the bush and the way he teaches his clients to read unearthly silences and stillnesses in the wind that signify trouble. He writes about deadly charges by elephants and the electric excitement of witnessing the mass migrations of wildebeest and zebras. He writes, too, in detail about the terrible events of 1999. Imbued with Ross's passion for East Africa, this is an unforgettable account of a life of remarkable adventures, and a memorable vision of a beautiful, deadly, and fragile world.

        5 out of 5 stars African safari.......2007-05-16

This is a book that is hard to put down. I think I read it in just about one day's time. Some of it is hard to read, because of the kidnapping. However, one should keep going and read it all. In our travels in Africa we found the guides to be knowledgeable, kind and considerate. While we are not acquainted with Mr. Ross in person, by the time I finished the book I felt that I knew him very well. He manages to make you feel that you are there with him.

5 out of 5 stars Real African adventure.......2006-02-06

Most of this book is about true encounters with amazing animals in East Africa. The stories took me back to my own safari experiences in another part of Africa. If you've never been on safari and are thinking about going, this book will give you a good idea of what to expect. As implied in the title, beauty is also sometimes dangerous. The last part of the book is about an awful incident in which he and two of his clients were taken hostage by rebels who crossed the border from a nearby country. The area they were in should have been safe. Mark did all he could to take care of his clients, but in such a chaotic situation, no one can control what happens. Sadly, the couple who had been on safari with him several times was killed. It may have only been chance that he survived himself. I admire how he has honestly shared his feelings of loss and helplessness and also how he is trying to reconcile his love of Africa with what happened. Reading this book scared me but it also made me want to return to Africa to see more of this amazing continent.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: This Book Will Whet Your Appetite for Safari!.......2004-12-29

I picked up Dangerous Beauty as an antidote to my post-safari blues upon returning home from my first trip to East Africa. By chapter one, I was so impressed by Mr. Ross' approach to safari and his passion for wildlife, especially the predators, that I just knew I had to weasel my way onto one of his future safaris, which I was lucky enough to do in the Summer of 2004.

If you've been to Africa, and already know you love the place, this book will give you a closer glimpse into this special world through the eyes of a man who has made it his life's passion, and loves it, despite its troubles. If you've yet to go, well, this book may very well push you in that direction, or at least give you a very tangible feeling of what a transformative experience safari can be when it's just a small group of clients and a guide who is simply the best there is. Mark Ross truly has a wonderful spirit, an infectious sense of humor and a flair for sharing this elusive place that few others possess.

I'm already planning my next Ross Safari... wanna join me? Seriously! My e-mail address is included in my Reviewer Profile, so please contact me. I'd love to hear from you!

4 out of 5 stars Great stories from Africa.......2004-02-18

Dangerous Beauty is a great storybook. Mark C. Ross shares his incredible life stories in this book, and their fascinating. The way he encounters the same animals again and again and creates special bonds with them, even babysitting their children, to me is amazing. The book is impossible to put down because there is a new story with every five pages or so. The book leaves you breathless, wanting more. It's an awesome book, read it!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent adventure story.......2003-11-24

This is a collection of many of the adventures the author has had while guiding clients around East Africa. The stories do a good job of capturing the life and death struggle in one the last remaining truly wild places in the world. The chapters concerning his stint as a war photographer in Uganda and the murders in the forests in Uganda provide a chilling reminder of what is really going on in Africa.

The book was great, it read well and the stories were excellent. I highly recommend this book to anybody with even a passing interest in African wildlife or Africa in general. The chapters that don't deal with the wildlife serve to remind people that despite the undeniable natural beauty of Africa it is a dangerous place.

            Book Description

One of every three Americans faces cancer. With the diagnosis comes a maelstrom of fears about the future and complex decisions about treatment. In this world turned upside down it is difficult to find the right answers, much less be certain that the right questions are asked. It is hard to balance the desire to find a cure and extend life, and the wish to prevent side effects of treatment. At the same time, patients and families must deal with powerful emotions, keep hope for the future, and maintain a sense of meaning in life. Live Longer, Live Larger is a handbook for people who want a supportive companion in their response to cancer or other serious illness. It is based on the experience and hard-won wisdom of thousands of patients and families dealing with cancer: people of differing temperaments, backgrounds, and medical circumstances. Its stories, exercises and tools can help you survive a diagnosis of cancer to live longer, more meaningfully, and with a higher quality of life, regardless of prognosis or stage of disease. Topics covered include: Authors William M. Buchholz, M.D., Hematology and Oncology, and Susan W. Buchholz, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, have worked since 1978 with patients and families facing life-threatening illness. Inspired by their patients, they have created a map to help other people successfully navigate the complex world of cancer.

People diagnosed with cancer are often inundated with books from well-meaning friends, but this is the ONLY book I've turned to throughout my entire four-year cancer journey. It has been a comfort to me to learn that my feelings about the cancer experience are not unique to me and that I am not the only person who experiences crippling doubts. "Live Larger" encourages hope, which you need to Live Larger and Longer.

            4 out of 5 stars Rock''m Sock'm Boxing Title Match.......2001-11-06

You didn't expect it but there you are (or someone you know) transported to center ring against your dreaded opponent, 'Cancer'! Luckily, there is someone in your corner who has experience and knowledge to guide you against this towering opponent. The book offers help from Round 1 thru Round 15. The book is realistic, compasionate, and practical. The Buchholz's speak from the heart. They covers topics patients and familes need to know about; treatment options, alternative therapies, clinical trials, emotions, managed healthcare, family dynamics, etc. There are short narratives about real people to bring out important points and pitfalls.

It is hard to give a book of this type 5-Stars because so much of what makes the book a success goes on within the patient or those that relate to the patient. The book itself is a guide, it doesn't give you "The Answer".

Offering hope, meaning for lives of cancer patients

"LIVE LONGER, LIVE LARGER: A Holistic Approach For Cancer Patients and Families" offers a compassionate approach to cancer patient care that focuses on the whole person, not just the disease. Through their practice, this husband and wife work with each patient to construct a strategy for dealing with life-threatening illness. Reading this book is like having an unhurried consultation with them.
" Live Longer," outlines the strategy as a plan to extend life beyond its current bounds, and aims not only to treat the individual's malady, but also to heighten a patient's quality of life and engender a greater depth of meaning.
For those who have chosen-and Drs. Buchholz assert that there is always choice-to receive a particular treatment for cancer, "Live Longer" provides instruction on how to maintain a willingness to take one step after another even when it is difficult. This includes guidance on the appropriate application of hope, living with uncertainty, coping with changes in body image, and managing one's modes of energy so as to avoid fatigue.
"Live Longer" offers people with cancer a philosophy of how to live their lives fully.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for cancer patients.......2001-10-13

Something to think about is an exceptional book that has just come out by Drs. Bill and Susie Buchholz, Living Longer, Living Larger. While directed to cancer patients and their families because he is an oncologist, it is well suited to anyone facing life crises that can shorten life. Dealing with fear, medical jargon, and what it means to live a larger life, it meets the reader wherever they are in dealing with a life changing medical
event - diagnosis, choosing treatment, during treatment, remission, recurrence, or endgame.

            Book Description

Although 79 percent of Americans support allowing gay and lesbian troops to serve openly, the military continues to hunt down and discharge qualified service members. This series of profiles of lesbian service members shows the flaws in the assertion that allowing gay and lesbian service members to serve openly and with honor will cause a breakdown of morale and unit cohesion.

Zsa Zsa Gershick served as a reservist in the US Army from 1978 to 1982. She is the author of Gay Old Girls, as well as a series of articles for The Texas Observer and The Texas Triangle profiling high-achieving service members discharged for being gay. She lives in Los Angeles.

            5 out of 5 stars I'm in the book.......2007-07-13

Okay, perhaps I'm a bit biased because I'm in the book. But I spent 3 hours on the phone with Zsa Zsa being interviewed, and I never got the sense that she was "injecting her own opinions into the interview." I thought it was one of the most affirming conversations I'd ever had. I felt that her expressions of sentiment were merely a way of drawing me further out of myself. I found the interview such a positive experience that I referred her to several friends of mine who are also featured in the book, including the incognito "Major Maureen" (who, incidentally, has since retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel). After "Major Maureen's" interview, "Maureen's" partner actually thanked Zsa Zsa for making it such a positive experience for her. They must have spent 4 hours on the phone, and it was clear that "Maureen," a naturally very taciturn individual, had a lot bottled up inside that needed to come out. All of us who were in the book, that I know of, were very happy with the final version and felt that we had been treated very well and fairly.

4 out of 5 stars A diverse and illuminating gathering of military women's voices.......2005-10-16

"Secret Service: Untold Stories of Lesbians in the Military," by Zsa Zsa Gershick, is a compilation of interviews with lesbians who have served (and, in some cases, were still serving when interviewed) in the armed forces of the United States. The book features a foreword by Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer, the lesbian Army nurse who challenged the military's policy on homosexuality. Gershick presents chapters on 31 additional military women. Some do not use their real names, and some of the interviews feature photos of the women. The chapters alternate between two formats: (1) full-length interviews that consist of exchanges between Gershick and the women, and (2) short, one-or-two page first-person narratives from the women.

Gershick has brought together the voices of a very diverse group of military women. Both officers and enlisted women are featured. The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are all represented. The women's service spans many decades. Gershick includes women who have made successful careers and retired with at least 20 years of service, as well as women who spent only a short time in uniform. There are women who successfully navigated the military's restrictions on homosexuals, as well as women who faced investigation and discharge.

The women featured in the book address many significant issues: survival tactics used by lesbians in the military; the question as to how the military's policy on gays affects officers and enlisted personnel differently; paranoia and the psychological toll taken on closeted military lesbians; the danger of surveillance and anti-lesbian "witch hunts"; facing sexual harassment from male military personnel; the challenges involved in maintaining a romantic relationship while in the military; facing interrogation; the public "coming out" of prominent gay military personnel; and former President Clinton's controversial attempt to change the military policy on homosexuality.

The women featured in the book really put compelling human faces on the very controversial gays-in-the-military issue. I especially enjoyed the interview with retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Shirley Geiling--it's a funny, sassy exchange that is often interrupted by Geiling's laughter. Also noteworthy are the comments of Air Force nurse Caroline Riso, who recalls service in Japan during the Vietnam era. Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Brenda Vosbein recalls being part of a 1994 case, _Jane Able et al v. United States of America_, that challenged the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. In another powerful exchange, an Army officer discusses her concerns that her partner has access to neither the military health care system nor the officer's military retirement benefits.

My only quarrel with the book is that Gershick inserts her own opinions into her exchanges with the interviewees too often. I found some of Gershick's statements to be a distraction from the interviewees' compelling stories. Still, Gershick's instincts as an interviewer are mostly on target; consequently, the exchanges between Gershick and the interviewees are, on the whole, illuminating and powerful. "Secret Service" is an excellent contribution to American military history, and an essential resource for all those interested in the gays-in-the-military issue. As a military veteran myself, I thank and commend Gershick and all the women who contributed to this important project.

            5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening!.......2005-08-12

This book is well written and very informative into the world of gay people in the military. What they go through to hide their true selves is extraodinary. Heterosexuals could never do it!
These are people just like you and I that love the job that they do, yet are forced to hide their personal lives for fear of persecution and job termination if "found out". Interesting how in the private sector this is called discrimination and there are tough laws to back it up, but not in the military?!
            Read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Journey of the Senses.......2005-07-12

Come along for a journey with the gifted author Zsa Zsa as she humbly and respectively provides the space and gentle nudge with just the right questions to open a world not often seen or heard from. In this book Zsa Zsa guides us into the lives of many Lesbian military servicemembers (both currently active duty and veterans) who reveal stories that stir the soul, bring tears to your eyes, laughter and tugs on the heart. These stories leave no emotion or sense untouched as you live a life in the moment of what it was like for these Lesbian women in the U.S. Military. As a U.S. Air Force veteran I found these stories to be compelling, thought provoking and emotionally engaging. Zsa Zsa has a brilliant talent for interviewing that allows the participants' stories to shine. A phenomenal journey that you will enjoy immensely!

            5 out of 5 stars Let's Tell........2005-06-26

This book is very insightful. Even though I was never in the military, the author presented the interviews in a way that I could really relate to. Anyone that is interested in the issues around the military's policy of "don't ask, don't tell" should read this book. We should send a copy to everyone in the House and Senate.

You won't be disappointed in this book. It's an entertaining read that I couldn't put down.
