Book Description
Architectural trends come and go, but stone endures. It speaks a rich visual language of texture, color, and pattern that no other material can convey. Stone has inspired American builders for more than three centuries, and today's architects continue to refer to the traditional construction methods and regional styles that connect stone structures to their natural surroundings. In 200 gorgeous color photographs of a vast repertoire of residences, inside and out, this glossy, handsome tome traces the development of domestic stone architecture in the United States. Providing general descriptions of featured styles and building techniques, as well as intriguing personal histories of the private homes, the informative text crosses the country as it covers everything from Dutch colonial farm houses to eclectic Victorian mansions to whimsical stone cottages to modernist expressions by Frank Lloyd Wright and others. For anyone interested in design, old houses, or American history, the book is a must.

History of Amercian Stone Houses.......2004-06-07
Full of beautiful photo's of exteriors and interiors of 43 different Stone Houses built in America from prehistoric times through the twenty-first century, along with descriptions of each house and discussions on each time period. This is a great book for anyone interested in stone work of any kind.
The Magic Of Stone.......2003-01-21
Stone Houses is a splendid survey which focuses exclusively on residential architecture in the USA. The book begins with several breathtaking photographs of historical sites in the Southwest where the Anasazi built beguiling settlements out of local stone over one thousand years ago. It then proceeds to document numerous stone structures of interest from colonial times right through to the present. Moreover, in addition to his commentary on the buildings presented within the pages of this beautifully realized volume, Lee Goff provides a thoughtful discussion of the qualities of stone itself which makes for such a superb, durable building material in the first instance as well as an inspirational source for imaginative residential design. To quote briefly from the introduction: "Stone has different moods. It can be warm or cold, protective or inhospitable. Before all else, however, stone evokes an image of power, strength, impregnability and endurance. Even more subliminally it conveys a sense of the primordial...Instinctively, we feel the millions of years ago the stones were formed. Thus, the materials of nature become the material of shelter, and the form the shelter takes in turn reflects the origin of the stone and the house's setting, connecting the dwelling and its inhabitants to the most permanent world of all-the natural world."
Stone was the first material used for shelter. It can be (and has been) assembled in any number of creative, aesthetically pleasing ways. Stone Houses takes us on a wondrous tour of many of the possibilities inherent to this medium of construction. "Whether cottage or château, cabin or castle, stone houses embody feelings of romance and the picturesque. Their walls speak of permanence and history; their stones give whispered accounts of their prehistoric creation. They are an ongoing part of what Tennyson referred to as 'the eternal landscape of the past.' "

Rice' Is A Very Good Teacher.......2004-07-09
I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.
this book is worth TEN workshops.......2004-05-01
Overflowing with ideas and insider technique tips, Rice and friends present us with bountiful inspiration in this enthusiastic, well-illustrated book. It's not just a must-read but a must-OWN if you're involved with paper and fiber arts. The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!
Stamp Artistry by Rockport Press.......2004-02-21
This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!
Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!.......2004-01-01
This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

The Beautiful Fall: Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris
ASIN: 1576871878 |
Book Description
With a career spanning three decades, Patrick McMullan is one of the world's most celebrated party, fashion, and society photographers. Possessing status on par with his subjects, McMullan knows the intricate connections of those exalted and of the few who live behind the velvet rope. His relentless documentation of the famous figures who made New York City nightlife emblematic in the age of excess is collected for the first time in So80s: A Photographic Diary Of A Decade. A consummate chronicler, Patrick McMullan began his career in the early 1980s shooting the downtown scene alongside nightclub scribe Stephan Saban for the original Details magazine, with nothing more than an Instamatic camera and the enouragement of Andy Warhol. In So80s, he brings us back into the exclusive world of glamour and glitz as it was experienced by the era's greatest fashion, music, and art icons that mixed uptown elitism with downtown eccentricity in New York City's nightlife. Shot in such legendary nightspots Studio 54, Area, Danceteria, Limelight, and the Cat Club, So80s features unreleased photos from the Patrick McMullan archives. Beautiful people populating these pages of societal history include Michael Alig, Drew Barrymore, Jean-Michel Basquiat, William Burroughs, Cher, Tina Chow, Calvin Klein, Duran Duran, Tom Ford, Michael J. Fox, Boy George, Keith Haring, Debbie Harry, Billy Idol, Biana Jagger, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Robert Mapplethorpe, Liza Minelli, Cookie Mueller, Eddie Murphy, Tatum O'Neil, Yoko Ono, Ozzy Osbourne, River Phoenix, Diana Vreeland, Andy Warhol, and many more. McMullan shares with us his photographic diary that holds the essence of New York characters and night crawlers.

Great photographic record of a glitzy moment in time.......2007-07-12
The moment in time being, of course, the party-all-night culture of Manhattan in the 1980's. Patrick McMullen chronicles these hedonistic and frenetic doings admirably in hundreds of crisp black-and-white photos in this huge book. There are a heck of a lot of celebrities in here, and a lot of ordinary people as well, dancing and drinking the night away. Andy Warhol was still alive at the time (did he pass on in 1987 or 1991? I can't remember), so a goodly number of the photos in this book focus, no pun intended, on him and his circle. That's why there are so many photos of zaftig blonde "Queen of the Night" Dianne Brill, who tells her own story in _Boobs, Boys and High Heels_ (out of print but available through Amazon Marketplace). There are also a lot of pictures of people whom the non-New Yorker may not recognize offhand, but who were important players on the city's social scene in the 1980's. Fashion mavens, in particular, will value this book for its excellent views of what the well-dressed partygoer and disco patron wore during the decade.
By the way, I have to wonder whether "A Reader" was reading the same book the rest of us were when he characterized it as "oversized pap", which it certainly is not. (I notice, by the way, that a lot of the really bad reviews are left by these anonymous "A Reader"'s. Why are they afraid to sign their names?)

Amazing Photos.......2006-11-28
Just got this book and loved it. Patrick really documents the "scene" in NYC in the 80s. I would have loved to have been around during this decade but I guess this is the closest I'll get. A great gift or personal book for anyone interested in culture.
WONDERFUL VISUAL JOURNEY .......2005-07-25
This book is a great trip through the 80's and really is an insight into the world that was so much fun in NYC. Thankfully, it's too heavy for anyone to steal it from my coffee table but it does provide quite fun enterntainment! The photos are really great and the quotes are so cool -- I can't wait for McMullan's so9o's to come out!

Sex and The Single Girl: Before There Was Sex in the City, There Was (Cult Classics)
ASIN: 0312317573 |
Book Description
Dear Pussycat:Some of us find it easier to say in a letter whatever it is we want to express -- love, rage, outrage, affection, resentment, enthusiasm, a request to do a chore -- than we do person to person or even phone to phone. I've been writing letters, somewhat successfully I think, since I was eight years old. I got President Franklin Roosevelt to write to my wheelchair-bound (from polio) sister by dropping him a line at the White House. Some of my letters don't quite make it, of course -- trying to get New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger to fire his vicious play reviewer Frank Rich who tore apart my husband's perfectly fine play, A Few Good Men. He wouldn't do it -- no recourse but to write the reviewer himself, "Dear Frank, you bastard! etc." I've thanked designer Emilio Pucci for turning small bust and big hips into goddess stature with whammo fabric and genius engineering, kept a few beloved employees from jumping ship or into the river with careful flattery, consoled the grieving. Wouldn't you like to see a little collection of my best, meanest and happiest notes that reflect a pretty fascinating New York life, a career they don't make many like, love and friendship with junior high school buddies and a few razzle-dazzle celebrities? Okay....if you like good old-fashioned staying-in-touch by correspondence, here they are!Helen Gurley Brown
Customer Reviews:
An inspirational book.......2004-09-28
It was very refreshing to read HGB's letters and her approach to many situations. For those of you who are intimidated to write notes or want to write to someone of star status, you may find this book will encourage you to put pen to paper. And for those Cosmo readers out there, you will gain more insights into the great HGB.
a not so light hearted trifle.......2004-09-05
Dear Pussycat is a collection of Helen Gurley Brown's letters over the decades. It was meant, I suppose to be light hearted, frothy peep into her life but it is nowhere near as charming as it is meant to be. As I read I found myself feeling increasingly annoyed with her and sadder for her sister Mary. What a trial it must have been to have a sister who apparently constantly reminded you and everyone else of your losses? Some of the letters are silly, others are catty and quite a few seemed to be included simply to settle old grudges. Oh well, different strokes for different folks: I just didn't like this one.
For real.......2004-07-27
Being the proud recipient of several letters from Helen Gurley Brown myself, I can testify this is how she really writes letters to everyone, not just the rich and famous. I'm everyone, not rich, not famous. HGB's defining quality is her sheer enjoyment of life, of people, of being part of the daily drama/comedy/tragedy. She's also shiningly intelligent, highly creative and nobody's fool. I found the review comment about her sense of self-importance interesting because, in the letters she's sent to me, the sense is just the opposite. She's just one person responding to another in the most friendly, generous and genuine way. Few celebrities of her stature write anyone about anything; she not only writes but most personably and personally. I find it interesting that as she grows older she looks better, not worse. I think the secret there is that joy of life oozing to the surface. It can't be bought or faked. She's got it.

Book Description
Riding Into The Wind is a most unusual and passionate story by two rebellious student activists(Students for a Democratic Society, Harvard Tocsin, The College Peace Union) who become expatriates during the Vietnam War and after the assassinations of JFK and his brother Robert, to roam the world on horseback. They sell everything they own, sever all ties, burn all bridges and rule books, declaring themselves Citizens Of The World: their adamant credo of Never Go Back becomes the core of an emerging philosophy of living totally in the here and now. They work as volunteers in a Venezuelan barrio building a school; they join a gypsy caravan in northern Spain, then work their way to South America on a German ferryboat before starting out on the longest horseback odyssey in history: 22,000 miles through 14 countries in almost five years. This innovative work of creative nonfiction is told in two voices, so the dramatic story of these "lovers in each happening of their hearts" moves on several dimensions as they encounter all the extremes of triumph and tragedy. Part travel adventure, part vision quest, part social and political commentary, it cuts cross-country geographically and cross-genre literarily. It is also the story of two courageous radicals from the turbulent 1960s and 70s totally in love with each other and with life. A very intense read! Truly, their life is their message!
Customer Reviews:
Found treasure.......2006-03-13
I found this book by chance one day when casually meandering through reviews and links at Amazon. How strange to discover such a profoundly moving book in such a manner! It is easily one of the best books I've read in the past 10 years, yet I almost missed it entirely. My copy is now littered with "footprints" as I marked passage after passage of wisdom that the Foote's acquired and shared, such as this: "Years of travelling, always wary, taught us that all you control is your own reaction. And that is how you can control a situation." But the book shares much more than wisdom acquired on the trail. It also shares the pain and joy and intensity of an incredible journey.
Powerful.......2005-11-02
The sub-title of this book is 'On Horseback Out of Patagonia, A Life Journey.' The book chronicles the deeply personal and very unique life journey of Elly & Nathan Foote with four horses and a dog from the end of South America to Texas in the early nineteen seventies. Descriptions of people and places abound, but this is more than a travelogue; it is a story of overcoming obstacles and having the courage to open oneself to a world of new experiences, both very good and unthinkably bad. Take the opportunity to live this journey vicariously with Elly & Nathan, and share the thoughts and emotions that they had along the way. In the end, you may be glad that you played it safe and never undertook such a life changing journey of your own, or it may just make you wish that you had. Either way, your mind will be broadened by sharing their experiences, and you will be glad that you took the trip, if only by reading this book.
A "tail" for living.......2005-06-22
At first glance, RITW might be considered a book about the incredible endurance of horses in extreme environments. Perhaps the casual reader will believe this book to be about 2 people out to "find" themselves. Recent dovotees of "Ecoquests" and endurance sports would no doubt find some connection to this tale. In my opinion the authors reach much deeper and explore fundamental life questions as much as provide rich description of some of the most challenging terrain on the planet. This book is no rehash of a diary. Nor is it a "travelouge" describing the really cool things to do during the day and the jacuzzi stops at night. Observe: Nathan and Elly's journey took place over 30 years ago - RITW was published in 2003! Life has continued for Nathan and Elly. This book was written certainly to entertain and astound but with wisdom that comes from much reflection and organization of thoughts. All of this, but I am fairly certain that any reader will cheer, imagine the bugs, smell the vegetation, cry at losses, "squoosh" in the mud, learn from the anguish and subsequent (though not necessarily inevitable) perserverence to recovery, dabble into the politics of the time, and complete the book fully satiated. Oh, and yes, this book most exquisitely and beautifully describes horses, horsemanship and the bond human beings can share with these marvelous creatures as well as our canine friends. Elly and Nathan didn't set out to set records or change the world (perhaps in retrospect!); but they did write a book of lessons all the more relevant in today's "snippet", get-it-done-fast society.
One moral - live in the moment (I think Yoda said something like that to Luke...)
The short version: great read with stuff that you'll think about a long time following!
WHAT A GREAT READ (AND GREAT RIDE!).......2004-04-14
As the author of the movies "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,"
and "Hidalgo," I have a passion for stories about unbroken
spirit and the courage to follow one's dreams into uncharted terrain (not to mention stories about remarkable horses).
"Riding into the Wind," is such a book and more. Elly and Nathan Foote write with the same vision and conviction that they live their lives by, and they have that rare gift of transporting the reader onto the unbeaten path with them. It will inspire you to reexamine your life and reconnect with your dreams no matter how impossible the conformist world tells you they are.
This is by far the best equestrian travel book I've read and a
ride you'll remember forever.
Across the Americas with Criollos and Mustangs.......2004-03-19
Nathan and Elly Foote are true adventerers who conquered distance, foul luck, hard times and thousands of miles, proving that with real mettle, you can follow your dreams. The book is a must-read for horsepersons, and a treat for horse trekkers the world over. The fact that they did it with America's First Horse--Criollos and Spanish Mustangs--just makes it that much better. If you saw Hidalgo and want to know more about the Gilbert Jones Mustangs mentioned at the end of the movie, here's a great place to read about their toughness in actual distance work in modern times. Hats off to Nathan and Elly!
Don't be misled by "sour grapes" contributors here. They have their own agendas, and it isn't the buyer's edification, you can be sure.
Book Description
Master clinicians Framo, Papp, Paul, and Sluzki describe and explain the separate interviews they each conducted with one couple. Nine other highly experienced therapists describe what they might have done. In a compelling conclusion, the couple give candid and intelligent accounts of the interviews from their point of view.
Customer Reviews:
interesting concept...got dull at times...+ framo was cruel.......2001-04-09
the concept is interesting. even though they say it's just demonstration interviews, it's really a therapy contest...to see who's the best...a shrink-off. you know all the therapists' goal was to each do the best and get the prize, the kudos from the couple, who actually later do grade them, just like i'm grading this book here, though they give them a score between one and ten.
for the competitor in all of us, this book calls out.
nevertheless, there was tons of wooden gunk in between the good stuff, tons of dull and essentially meaningless essays about theory and practice, etc, and that was worth skipping over or skimming... you decide.
and last but not at all least: that guy Framo was a big jerk. he so obviously bulled the woman in the couple into "opening up" and becoming vulnerable in front of her family, which is exactly what she didn't want to do (good instinct on her part), and he kept promising her he'd support her, which is exactly what he! DIDN'T DO! he was exceedingly manipulative with her, and that had to be the most manipulative transcript of a therapy session i'd ever read. i mean, this guy's a master, and he totally disguises his own motives. also, he completely protected the parents at the expense of the daughter (though he was slippery enough about it to not make it look so), and ultimately, i believe, acted not at all in her best interest, and may have damaged her worse than she knew. and on top of all that, he did it in such a slimy way that she THANKED HIM PROFUSELY FOR IT AFTERWARDS!!! it was only six YEARS later that she realized...just a little bit...how far he'd gone in manipulating her...but she was still thanking him. he messed with her head in a big way.
and by the way, the editors of the book "just play neutral" when it comes to Framo's behavior. this is sick stuff. but you read it and decide.
Book Description
The Japanese Army's invasion of China in 1937 was the first step toward a hemispheric war that would last until the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. What ended in one atrocity began with another: the savage military takeover of China's capital city, which quickly became known as the Rape of Nanking. The Japanese Army's conduct from December 1937 to February 1938 constitutes one of the most barbarous events not just of the war but of the century. The violence was documented at the time and then redocumented during the war crimes trial in Tokyo after the war. This book brings together materials from both moments to provide the first comprehensive dossier of primary sources on the Rape.
Part 1, "The Records," includes two sources written as the Rape was underway. The first is a long set of documents produced by the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone, a group of foreigners who strove to protect the Chinese residents. The second is a series of letters that American surgeon Dr. Robert Wilson wrote for his family during the same period. These letters are published here for the first time.
The evidence compiled by the International Committee and its members would be decisive for the indictments against Japanese leaders at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo. Part 2, "The Judgments," reprints portions of the tribunal's 1948 judgment dealing with the Rape of Nanking, its judicial consequences, and sections of the dissenting judgment of Justice Radhabinod Pal.
These contemporary records and judgments create an intimate firsthand account of the Rape of Nanking. Together they are intended to stimulate deeper reflection than previously possible on how and why we assess and assign the burden of war guilt.
Timothy Brook is Professor of Chinese History and Associate Director of the Joint Centre for Asia Pacific Studies, University of Toronto, and is coeditor of Nation Work: Asian Elites and National Identities and Culture and Economy: The Shaping of Capitalism in Eastern Asia, both published by the University of Michigan Press.
Customer Reviews:
Very Readable Primary Source Collection on Nanking Massacre.......2005-06-19
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to read primary source accounts of the war crimes committed by units of the Japanese Imperial Army in Nanking during 1937-38. The book is divided into 2 areas: The first section covers items of evidence, including correspondence to Japanese authorities in Nanking and numerous eyewitness accounts as transcribed by the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone. Heart-wrenching letters composed by Dr. Robert Wilson are also included in this section. The second, much-smaller part of the book details the majority opinion and findings of the International Military Tribunal in 1948. Finally, the rambling and unconvincing dissent by Justice Radhabinod Pal completes this interesting book. Many of the letters and accounts are no more than a page or two, so it can be easily read in small increments.
For those who seeking actual historical evidence after being awakened to this atrocity by Iris Chang's "Rape of Nanking", you will find it in this book. It is not exhaustive by any means, but does present the most notable accounts surrounding the Nanking massacres. Japanese ultra-nationalists have no credible rebuttal for what is fairly documented in this book and thus will say anything to dissuade you from reading it. That in itself is a ringing endorsement for the validity of "Documents on the Rape of Nanking", and the unblemished facts it provides for generations of readers.
A first hand account on a long hidden matter.......2004-06-27
Beware of a person who sign "Hiromi". He (or she ?) has commented all the books on this subject and writes like a rith-wing extremist revisionnist.
Good resouce, if you read it in fair mind.......2003-11-18
The Documents of the Nanking Safety Zone is a first-class contemporary resource that lets you get the picture of what happened and not happened in Nanking in December 1937.
Members of The International Committee of the Nanking Safety Zone were of anti-Japanese sentiment, but were honest enough to wrote things like that they were unable to separate civilian refugees to the soldiers in civilian clothes hiding in the Safety Zone (that is violation of the International law) although they make protests against Japanese Army assuming these plain-clothes soldiers as "civilians", so executing of those snipers should be illegal to their eyes.
Still, they admitted that [cases 210 to 219] are only the ones [they] have been able to get first hand reports of : (the first two are the cases overlooked in typing up previous reports.)(p118) You can get the picture now. The reports they are making and handing in to the Embassy of Japan were all hearsay. On top of that, most of them were "second-hand" hearsay!
Although they wrote them as if they were witnessed by them, you can see the difference between hearsay and genuinely witnessed event : for instance, case 185 (p78) says ;
"On the morning of January 9, Mr. Kroeger and Mr. Hatz saw a Japanese officer and soldier executing a poor man in civilian clothes....." This was the only one of two "killings" that were actually witnessed ,which was testified by Rev. John G. Magee in the Tokyo Trial. This one was "legitimate execution"(p78), and the other one was a case that a man in civilian clothes who was challenged by a sentry but run away then shot. This was not murder either.
If you are a little careful about these things, you can see everything like Dr. Wilson's letters to Rabe's diary consists of hearsay. Only things they saw were actions related to the battles and its aftermath for most of them the Chinese soldiers are respnsible, not Japanese (Kuomintang propaganda department was very much in action at that time).
Nevertheless, some people still think these documents are the eyewitness evidences of the "Rape of Nanking". I don't know how or why. Maybe for them, the truth of history doesn't matter. But to the Japanese, it matters a lot because we are still on trial for these horrible false accusations.

Book Description
Sir Arthur Bryant and National History in Twentieth-Century Britain is a significant new study of the work of the popular historian and journalist, Sir Arthur Bryant (1899-1985). Since his death, scholarly interest in Bryant has focused on his Nazi sympathies in the late 1930s. Julia Stapleton broadens our understanding of the man and the writer. She shows us that Bryant prefigured and sustained a form of romantic nationalism that remained nascent within the British population (though not always its elites) deep into the twentieth century.
