Great Overview for Anyone Interested in Building a Passive Solar Home.......2007-03-25
This book defines the basic components of a pasive solar home and provides guidelines for building a home with plenty of house plans as examples. It also lists lots of references for more technical information about both passive and active solar heating and cooling.
passive home review.......2007-03-14
i like the book a lot. it has good beginning information, and good resources in the back.
Great book with wonderful ideas........2007-01-31
I really like this book and their web site also. I am in a planning stage of building a house and at this time I think I will use the author to design my home when I am ready. They have many good ideas. Buy this book, it is a good one.
Great Resource.......2006-09-24
Debra Rucker Coleman's book, The Sun Inspired House, showcases passive solar houses that are comfortable the year around, light filled, beautiful, healthy for the residents, and good for the environment. These houses cut energy bills in half and cost very little additional to build. Coleman inspires the reader to want to live in a passive solar house, and walks them through the process of making that happen. Her reviews of current books, design analysis software, and websites point the way to more detailed information on all aspects of the design and construction process.
With over 25 years experience working and living with passive and active solar systems, this is the book on passive solar design I recommend for prospective homeowners, architects, and homebuilders.

A collection of home designs which blends floor plans and modification ideas with sun-inspired homes for all climates.......2006-05-22
A 'sun-inspired' room is sunny, open, warm in winter and cool in summer, and integrates sustainable design principles with efficiency and useful design basics. And THE SUN-INSPIRED HOUSE illustrates a range of concepts related to the sun, using fifty house plans to demonstrate integrated concepts. This is a collection of home designs which blends floor plans and modification ideas with sun-inspired homes for all climates. Blends of design and construction information provide an architect's expertise under one cover. What it lacks in glossy color photos is more than made up for in practical application designs and insider information paired with homeowner testimonials that they actually work. A top pick.

Review of Hilary Page's Guide to Watercolor Paints.......2007-01-14
I recently purchased Page's Guide and I'm delighted that I did. Firstly, the book came autographed and with several appended additions to information. Page's dedication to accuracy and clarity is impressive. Secondly, the book has a remarkable amount of information about all the brands of watercolor paint available in the U.S. relating to lightfastness, transparency, granularity, opacity, and so on, and the colors are actually shown in the book. Unlike other writers of watercolor paint guides, she uses all the colors in her book, which makes it sigificantly more interesting to review and read. Lastly, I take painting lessons from a nationally-known artist who has also published books relating to watercolor painting and color, and she recommends Page's book over others. I had already purchased Page's book, so I was thrilled to hear another expert give it praise.
I rate Page's Guide with four stars because I believe there is always more we can know about art, and Page may decide there's a more detailed edition she needs to publish, and also because actual publication printing inks are not as accurate in depicting colors as seeing the actual watercolor paint on watercolor paper. But for anyone contemplating purchasing Page's Guide, I highly recommend it.
AWESOME RESOURCE.......2006-02-25
I've read dozens of books on watercolor pigments. This is by FAR the best out there. Complete and unbiased information on all the leading manufactures pigments. This is the only book I keep on my studio desk with me at all times.
A Necessary Resource for the Watercolorist.......2005-11-19
"Hilary Page's Guide to Water Color Paints" is a necessary book for anyone doing watercolor. Her coverage is very through and she also has a web page for updating the information. She compares every well-known brand of artists' watercolors from Holbein to Winsor and Newton and her observations will save the artist, whether professional or rank amateur, both frustration and money. What's more, she tested every one herself! I liked the index, which first lists the company and under each company the colors sold. It makes it very easy to check up on the paints that interest you. Her short introduction on pigments and paints is also quite informative. If you work with watercolor you simply cannot afford to be without this book!
By the way my copy was given to me by my daughter for my birthday and was autographed by the author. The author had also neatly written a correction inside the book. This is a dedicated person and her work is much appreciated!
A must-have book for every serious painter.......2005-08-11
This was the first, and is still the definitive book on the chemistry of watercolor paints. Hilary Page is a fine watercolorist, but her main contribution to the industry has been her copious analysis of the characteristics of various manufacturers, brands, and qualities of watercolor paints. I became interested in the stability of paint in the early 80's while trying to find the most fade-proof pigments available for my own watercolor paintings. I did many of the same tests Hilary did, but no where near as complete. When her book came out much later, I purchased a copy and still use it today. My copy is marked up with notes that I refer to constantly. I feel this book should be on the shelf of any serious student of watermedia.
Compares with M Wilcox book.......2004-02-06
Helpful, providing definitive information on the behavior of the paint, accurate color photos, and information in disagreement with Wilcox's book--i.e. the color Opera by Holbien as a "permanent" color. (Color rec. by E. John Robinson). Useful when picking between different manufacturers, especially with online shopping.

Customer Reviews:
Garfield's not a cat.......2005-06-28
He's a little brother dressed up in a cat costume. He can't speak, but somehow he communicates telepathically with his "master" and the family dog, Odie, who behaves like a retarded child.
These comics are cute, but there's really not that much humor in them, or maybe just a one-"hah" rank in humor.
I wish Gary Larson would go back to writing comics. He was good.
I've recently seen two other syndicated comics which are pretty funny, "Rubes" by Leigh and "Bizarro" by Dan Piraro. These newer, and presumably younger, artists make Jim Davis look like a children's cartoonist, which, in some ways, he actually is. But we're all really just big children, right? Right! Diximus.
Not one of Garfield's better books from the mid to late 80's.......2003-03-20
Man I love garfield cause he is a very funny cat and he does such things as eating Jon's lasanga, being mean to Odie and destroying Jon's chair, there's a hilarious part when Odie drive's Jon's car inside the house but other than that, it's not a classic like some of Garfield's other books of this era.
Overall recommended.

What are girls good for?
Nellie Bly wasn't always Nellie Bly. First she was Elizabeth Cochrane, a shy girl from Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania. All her life Elizabeth had been told, "girls can't do this" and "girls can't do that." Even the newspaper the Pittsburgh Dispatch said that all girls were good for was getting married and taking care of their families.
But Elizabeth didn't believe it. She knew girls could take care of their families -- but they could also do much, much more. So one day she set out to prove it, and became Nellie Bly -- a name to be reckoned with.

Living in Kenya, but avoiding Kenyans.......2007-06-09
I live in Kenya for 6 months out of each year. My experiences there are both wonderful and difficult, and I am always looking for books written by other foreigners who have lived there. I am VERY disappointed with this book. Ms. Atwood moved to Kenya to experience Africa, but chose to do so from a completely self-centered and white settler basis. She lived in the lap of luxury surrounded by servants and never went out of her way to understand (not to mention participate) in the local culture of Kenyans. She gets excited by things reminiscent of what she calls "old Africa", which she then describes as the good old days of the British colonialists. I found her attitude typical of many foreigners living in Kenya, but very disheartening.
If you want to learn about Kenya from the perspective of a wealthy and relatively self-centered white lady, this is the book for you. Otherwise, skip it.
AMERICAN REALITY IN KENYA.......2007-01-03
AFTER TRAVELING IN KENYA ON TWO SEPERATE OCCASIONS, THERE WAS ALWAYS A DREAM IN THE BACK OF MY MIND--"WOULDN'T IT BE WONDERFUL TO LIVE HERE" THIS IS A STORY ABOUT AN AMERICAN WOMAN WHO DID JUST THAT. IT WAS A REALISTIC NARRATIVE ABOUT THE JOYS AND DIFFICULTIES OF TRYING TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY WITH A SEMI-CLOSED ENGLISH SECTION OF SOCIETY AND THE RULES AND REGLATIONS OF A AFRICAN WORK FORCE THAT SHE HIRED FOR HER RUG MANUFACTURING AND ALL THE PROBLEMS SHE HAD WITH BOTH. IN THE END I THINK IT WAS PURE LONLINESS THAT LED HER BACK TO THE U.S. BUT THE JOURNEY WAS INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE. I LOVED IT.
Throughly enjoyable! I didn't want it to end!.......2006-06-27
I really enjoyed this book from the first page through the last. It took me on an incredible journey of life in Kenya, Africa with all it's mishaps, adventures, safaris, and real life day to day living as a local living in Kenya. I really hated to see it end! This book is a must have for anyone planning a trip to Africa or for anyone that loves exotic destination travel.
As We Evolve.......2005-07-12
Allured by the introductory chapters accessible on the net, I was enticed by the backbone of her solo mission to a place with an almost contrary rhythm to the West. She definitely chose a beautiful country, still raw, still real. I'm bias of course - Having grown up in Kenya; it was another opportunity for sweet nostalgia.
While reading the book, I enjoyed the witty incorporation of Kiswahili idioms and expressions. I enjoyed her novel descriptions of Kenya's unfamiliar Northern Frontier and I took pleasure in the recognition of places such as Karen and Kiambu. It brought familiar places back to life.
Nonetheless, although this book has the potential to play sugary games with the hearts of fellow Kenyans, it lacks some of the insight that I had initially expected and desired. I was not disgruntled by this but simply listened to another story between the lines. By this I mean that, whereas the book strove for transparency and appeal, some sections were opaque and lacked the detailed artistic revelations that this intelligent and perceptive woman so apparently preserved in her mind. It felt like there were pieces missing as she was pushed by her peers and fans to write on. Perhaps a more integral account of the relationships that went terribly wrong was needed, or may be more reflections on the how her past plays with her present lifestyle and state of mind. The reader demands the full story.
There seems to be a lot of latent potential that I know can come through in a sequel (which I would read -hint hint). After all, writing is a never-ending journey as we grow and evolve. I'd like to see how the author processes her life and her past and changes accordingly. Overall, It's a very nice book and I hope that Melinda continues to write as she progresses through life. Hopefully we will get a chance to see what this strong and incredible woman has learned with time. Share.
not convincing..........2005-07-11
although descriptions of her native carpet factory employees were interesting, much more of the book is devoted to the author's many personal problems: a discordant sibling relationship; well-educated friends in kenya who at first help the author settle in, then mysteriously drop her completely; and especially the author's dalliance with a philanderer even though she knows he is sleeping with other women...east africa is a fascinating part of the world...surely one could have found something else of interest than watching the same American videos over and over while crying about a balloon pilot who was always somewhere else...
Book Description
The use or possession of many drugs is currently a criminal offense in the U.S. Can these criminal laws be justified? What are the best reasons to punish or not to punish drug users? These are the fundamental issues debated in this book by two prominent philosophers of law. Douglas Husak argues in favor of drug decriminalization, by clarifying the meaning of crucial terms, such as legalize, decriminalize, and drugs. Peter de Marneffe argues against drug legalization, demonstrating why drug prohibition, especially the prohibition of heroin, is necessary to protect youth from self-destructive drug use.

Not a research based book.......2007-09-11
This book was not based on research. It was a point v. counterpoint of the positions on drugs and the effects they have on people. It is an opinion book, not one filled with facts and figures based on solid research.

"Unquestionably the finest narrative of tank warfare to come out of World War II."Los Angeles Times
A tank officer's story of the desert war in North Africa, Brazen Chariots is one of the most widely praised war books ever published. Major Robert Crisp recounts Operation Crusader, the great tank battle waged against Rommel's Afrika Korps on the borders of Egypt.
Customer Reviews:
Life in a Tank.......2007-06-13
I recently finshed reading this book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It provides a gripping, first hand account of just what it was like to be a member of a tank crew, during the early, confusing, and often deadly battles of the war in North Africa. This book provides the human view that is so often missing from the more conventional histories of armies or battles. Hightly recomended!
The Classic First Person Account of Tank Warfare in North Africa.......2007-06-07
Going over my list Introduction to Tank Warfare list, I'm surprised I left this one off. This is one of the books I read as a kid that is partially responsible for me becoming a tanker myself.
Crisp gives a great first person account of being a tank commander during Operation Crusader in 1941. This book is great for the vivid descriptions of battles where he survived, though under-gunned and under-armored compared to his Panzer opponents, by using terrain and mobility to advantage. However it is also an accurate account of the mundane activities between battles without becoming boring in the process. All this is accomplished with Crisp's characteristically British flair where he continually relays how important was the need for British troopers to brew their regular pot of tea.
This is a short volume that gives an almost day by day account of the campaign in a very readable fashion. While detailed enough to keep any expert turning the pages, it is also basic enough for the casual reader who just wants a good 1st person account of the War in North Africa.
Very Limited in Scope.......2007-05-18
The limited scope is, of course, not the authors fault; he fought where he was assigned. If you just want some idea of what tank warfare was like in early WWII North Africa from someone who took part in no major armor engagements during the few weeks he was there, then get this book. However, if you want a book that tells about the battles and fighting vehicles used in the entire campaign or even a chunk of it, then Brazen Chariots is not for you. Major Crisp only commanded American made M3 Stuart light tanks with puny 37mm guns that couldn't stand up on equal terms against anything bigger than a Panzer Two, although Crisp's M3 was typically matched against a Panzer Three or Four. Of course, this wasn't his fault either, but I couldn't help wishing he would have at least served in a Crusader or Valentine at least from a British standpoint. In combat, he was luckiest when he could use his tank to sneak up on an anti-tank gun from behind. I also thought the writing to be a bit amateurish. This book also had the weirdest ending of any I have ever read. It leaves you not only wondering what ultimately happened to Major Crisp, but if some of the last pages of the book are missing. Seriously! I actually went to a book store to look at another copy, but it was just like mine. I grade a "C" on the book; and an "A" for the world's worst ending. My advice is: Only read this book if you have a lot of time on your hands or are desperate for something to read on this particular subject.
Brazen Chariots.......2006-08-27
I read this book a long time ago and loved it. It was great to renew my aquaintance with it. Brazon Chariots is a very educational and entertaining view into what it was like to fight the tank battles of North Africa in the early days of WW II. The book is written from a first person perspective of a rank and file Tank Camandoer of the British Army. It is full of his personal impressions and helps me understand how a soldier must feel.
I Loved This Book.......2006-08-02
As I've said in other reviews, I am far from a military historian; I wouldn't even make a good amateur military historian. Having said that I must say that I absolutely loved Brazen Chariots by Major Robert Crisp and my only complaint is that it seemed too short. His account of being in North Africa during World War II is very easy to read and not overburdened with military lingo and it consistently held my interest throughout reading it. There is plenty of dash and bravado, but it doesn't come off like that, as the author goes to great lengths to recall his emotions during each scenario and does not fail to mention the times when he was afraid, but was still compelled to do his duty. From getting into his first Stewart tank (referred to as a Honey), to crossing the wire after Rommel's forces, and finally to the wound that sends him home we read the different accounts of his battlefield experiences and see the war through his eyes. There are quite a few humorous spots in this book, and my favorite centers around the results of borrowing a general's pajamas. This book is a quick and light read that will allow you to see the Big War from a different perspective.
Customer Reviews:
Crisp is a Humble Hero.......2006-08-15
Although written shortly after WWII, I first read this book thirty years ago when it was being re-issued in a paperback series of first-hand war stories. I was struck then, as I am now, at how a person who seemed so "normal" could face overwhelming odds and almost certain death with such aplomb.
Robert Crisp's story of his role in the epic battles of North Africa against Rommel's Afrika Corps is one in which anyone can put themself. That is, right until the danger starts. Most of us would cower or run when faced with what he and his comrades faced. Instead, they faced death straight on and played a key role in the Allied victory. What makes Crisp's account so riveting is that he tells it without a hint of bragging.
I give this book a "5" because it is readible, informative and spellbinding. I think those interested in WWII, either seriously or casually, and those interested in human nature, will all find this book worthwhile. I recommend it.
