Book Description
Today's architecting must handle systems of types unknown until very recently. New domains, including personal computers, intersatellite networks, health services, and joint service command and control are calling for new architectures-and for architects specializing in those domains. Since the original publication, of this bestselling text, these new and emerging fields have contributed architectural concepts and tools of their own to the relatively new formalism-and evolving profession-called Systems Architecting. The Art of Systems Architecting, Second Edition restates and extends into the future the classical architecting paradigm, incorporating the most broadly applicable of these contributions. It remains the most innovative, insightful treatment available to the discipline, providing both the academic and the industrial communities with the up-to-date tools, concepts, and techniques needed to conceive and build complex systems.
Customer Reviews:
Not a primer--but a study guide for those with architecting expertise.......2006-09-26
If you are looking for a system architecting self-help cookbook, this probably isn't your silver bullet. A better recommendation might be something like an architecture framework standard (DoDAF, TOGAF, MoDAF, etc.) combined with software system architecting pragmatics, a good text on decision theory, a book on how people actually make decisions (e.g., Sources of Power, Organizational Culture and Leadership), and access to a repository of system architectures. Although this book has an appendix on heuristics, I doubt that those 12 pages alone would be worth the cost. This book will probably disappoint software-only system architects since much of the book is devoted to the issues of software/hardware co-development and manufacturing systems.
However, if you have questions as a practitioner of systems architecting about your overall architecting approach then I would highly recommend this text. I would also recommend this as a reference book for a systems architecting class at the advanced graduate level. This book will probably have little value to those who are not current practitioners. It does provide a balanced view of the discipline for journeymen. This view is presented in multiple dimensions such as builder-architected, enabling system (manufacturing), and systems science (social systems) domains.
The chapters on models and modeling is a high-level discussion. The architecture frameworks chapter is becoming outdated and is quite shallow. The integrated modeling methodologies (Hatley-Pirbhai, Q2FD) discussion is too short to be of much use other than to lead you to references for further reading. The section on the systems architecting profession is entertaining but not personally convincing. However it does cause the reader to think about the profession--an important subject to cover.
The system architecting profession is still in its infancy. This book provides a critical element to that profession's maturation since it identifies some of the domain's critical attributes. The book cannot go into much detail because it would rapidly grow into an encyclopedia-sized tome. Understanding this text requires a system architecting background to apply what is being presented. Architecting process mechanics is not its subject of focus but rather the overall architecting approach using systems architecting heuristics. These heuristics (or memes) must be understood from the standpoint of experience in order to be truly effective, and employing those memes without some expertise is truly without merit.
Advice.......2005-08-11
A much better alternative: "Process for system architecture and requirements engineering."
Buy this book only if you have some money left.
A good start.......2005-07-31
I waited for a chance to use this book before writing a review. For the past two years, I use it only when I need words to describe to the lay person "What" System Architecting is. But for practical system architecting technique, this book won't get it for you.
Not for the practitioner.......2004-06-24
I ordered this book because my company has been given a task to review another company's system architecture of a large warfare system and was looking for some structured and mainstream guidance for the team to establish "goodness" of an architecture.
Unfortunately, being in a bit of a hurry, this book frustrated me with its lack of practical criteria for evaluating architecture to make real corrections and decisions.
It has a lot of thought provoking heuristics that might make you a hit making speeches or at INCOSE cocktail parties but won't help you actually complete or evaluate an architecture.
As a Systems Engineer with 20 years in the business doing large scale defense systems, I am still in awe of the lack of defined guidance in how to transcend from the requirements to the architecture. That is where the magic happens in product development. The magic that ultimately determines if your product is technically a winner or a loser. This book doesn't get you any closer to that magic.
Deep.......2004-04-08
This book is probably the most abstract one on my Software Architecture bookshelf right now. Each page in this book takes twice as long to read as a page from any of my other, more technical architecture books. Another book might say "Use UML, everyone else does"; while this book says "Given a particular model set and language, it will be easy to describe some types of systems and awkward to describe others [...]".
Time spent reading this book is a good investment in my opinion, but only if you read it at a moderate pace and reflect. The listing and discussion of heuristics is especially valuable. For example, "The greatest leverage in architecting is at the interfaces" is a good heuristic and the book has an appendix full of them. Not only that, this book offers good discussions of what each heuristic means and why it applies.
Customer Reviews:
Wow! Get this Book!.......2007-08-25
I did watercolor portraits for a Level I college class. Samples of Powers works were in the book recommended for the course, of which I did not get until the course was over. After getting the book, "Everything you ever wanted to know about Watercolor," I was so intrigued with Powers work that I had to get this book.
"Painting People in Watercolor" is a very thorough book. Powers covers all the design elements and principles of painting and gives examples of each. His style of combining realism with abstraction and the way that he works his portraits in with the backgrounds makes his work both interesting and powerful. My original style was totally representational and I never new what to do with the background. Thanks to Alex Powers I have found a new way to paint that I am very excited about.
If you have any interest in painting watercolor portraits with power, movement and emotion, do miss out on getting this book. I read it twice before I painted another portrait and my work has much more vigor. I'll read this book over and over as I continue to paint.
My all-time favorite art book.......2007-03-10
I happen to like paintings that are not completely realistic and that take advantage of techniques such as using unpainted white paper as highlights. I also like artwork that has lots of lost edges, for example a leg blending into the background and your mind has to fill in the line of the leg. I don't care for 100% realism (take a photo), but I am not a fan of completely abstract paintings either. The point is that I already know what I like and don't like, and you too probably have some idea as to what you like and don't like.
Alex Powers breaks down the different design components of art and shows how he emphasizes the components of value and line to create his art work. However, he encourages you not to just copy his style but to find those components of art (line, color, value, edges, shape, etc.) that appeal to you and make your own artwork by emphasizing them. It is his discussion of the these different components and their relationship to one another that makes this book invaluable. For example, if you want to emphasize the use of value then you should deemphasize color. In this book Alex Powers explains why and covers many other similar design considerations.
The text of this book is fabulous and should appeal to any artist. However, I found the text to be a bonus, as the truth is that I bought the book because I liked the pictures (lost edges, etc.). Although, like a previous reviewer, I don't believe the cover is represtative of the work found inside.
Can be used for all media.......2006-11-22
Well rounded approach that can be used in painting in all media. Although his approach is primarily realistic, the principals work well with abstract and non-objective subjects also.
Painting People in Watercolor: A Design Approach.......2006-07-29
The book is well presented in an easily readable format. The
subject matter is informative with beautiful illustrations and it would appeal to both the beginner and the more experienced artist.
A Must-Have Book for Watercolor Portrait Artists.......2006-07-16
No well stocked watercolor library should be without this important book by Alex Powers. From understanding the human form to a thorough knowledge of design, Powers impacts an artist's skill. The work in this book guides in how to take your portraits from sterile mug shots to emotional works of art, full of drama and motion.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (a.k.a. Windows Me) endows Microsoft's everyday operating system with considerable multimedia capability, including video editing. The Microsoft Windows MovieMaker Handbook explains how to use the video-editing tools that ship with Windows Me to assemble video presentations. Perhaps more importantly, the authors relate knowledge about moviemaking--enabling you to plan and create videos that are more emotionally moving, persuasive, and technically attractive. They do a good job of communicating the importance of high production values in every video creation, whether professional or amateur, and appropriately place the editing tools themselves second in importance, behind good conceptual thinking.
In a typical section, the authors explain differences in editing styles. Documentary editing in the cinéma vérité style, for example, involves stringing together clips, often out of chronological sequence, in order to convey a larger truth about the subject. They explain camera moves ("dolly in," "pedestal up"), too. Coverage would be better if authors had included examples from famous movies and television shows (the jerky camera in "Homicide," the window in the series of dissolves at the beginning of "Citizen Kane"). Sections on Windows MovieMaker and the other Windows Me tools are adequate--it's the background information on moviemaking that gives this book its value. --David Wall
Topics covered: Fundamentals of cinematography, video editing, and the other technical aspects of moviemaking, as facilitated by the tools that come with Microsoft Windows Me. Sections deal with planning shots, writing scripts, arranging lights, and capturing video to digital format. Coverage of the Windows MovieMaker software documents the editing suite fully, from the everyday user's point of view.

a new hero for the millenium.......1999-03-21
As the razor sharp distinction between what is good and what is evil blurs the closer we get to y2k, a new type of hero has emerged from Japan who is not James Bond or John Wayne.Crying Freeman is an assassin, an anti-hero, but he is so good at what he does that the reader is rooting for him to win in the end.He is, after all killing others of his own kind. The story captures the imagination because it is realistic and the key ingredients are very similar to a book written by Jack Trevanian called "Shibumi".In that book, an assassin named Nicholas Hel dispatches his targets with an obscure martial art that could only be translated as "naked kill". He is also very well versed in the art of seduction. I wonder if the author of Crying Freeman ever read that book? Shibumi is a Japanese word to describe the art of "effortless perfection", a quality amply displayed throughout the manga. In any case, if you're bored with the clean-cut goodygoody heroes of the past and are looking for something grittier, then Crying Freeman is for you.
Great artwork, not so much on story.......1999-01-22
I prefered others in the Freeman series but this is still great if you like Ikegami's style and the story. Good for violence though. Those people who've got the whole lot should enjoy this. Not really good if you've not read any others.

Book Description
The scene made cult-classic status right from the start: here's rookie broadcast newsman Paul Linnman in the foreground, reporting on a sticky situation along the Oregon coast. Officials have been working to remove the body of a beached whale, long dead and now rotting. The solution: explosives. As Linnman ducks, the skies issue forth chunks of whale meat, and Linnman's live-action reporting takes its place in broadcast history. The title piece is merely one career highlight among many for Linnman, who writes from the inside about his work in this glamorous field. Now the lead anchor for Portland's KATU news program, Linnman reflects on the inspiring people and incredible events, as well as the just plain oddities that he's witnessed over the years. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll carry an umbrella at all times.
Customer Reviews:
The Story of The Exploding Whale...And A Lot More.......2003-12-08
To Oregon television viewers, Paul Linnman is a familiar, friendly voice and face they've welcomed into their homes as a reporter, anchorman and talk show host for most of the last 35 years. To the rest of the world, he's "the guy who blew up the whale." Which is kind of a shame, in a way. First, it's not quite accurate...it was the state Highway Division that blew up the whale; Paul and his cameraman, Doug Brazil, were just there to record it. Second, it may be the oddest, but by no means is it the finest story Paul has told during those decades.
First, the facts, briefly. In November, 1970, a dead sperm whale washed up near the town of Florence on the Oregon Coast. No one quite knew how to dispose of it. After due consideration, the decision was made to use dynamite. The hope was to blast the carcass into small enough chunks for the gulls and other scavengers to take care of. It didn't quite work out that way. All the spectators got sprayed with whale goo, and had to dodge hunks of falling blubber. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but one large fragment landed on a new Oldsmobile a quarter of a mile away and flattened it.
Much to Linnman's surprise, the story has taken on a life of its own, thanks to the Internet, humorist Dave Barry and others. In this memoir, Paul seems a bit bemused by all the attention, but is good natured and gracious about it as well. He just wishes people would also ask about some of the truly inspiring stories of human courage, character and achievement he's devoted most of his career to chronicling. In this book, he interweaves many of these great "people" stories with all you could ever want to know about the infamous whale. Linnman also adds a few enlightening and entertaining anecdotes about life behind the scenes in television news to round out this fine volume.--William C. Hall
Timeless.......2003-11-12
Paul is a naturally funny guy, and now we know he can lay it out on paper, as well.
In this book he weaves memories from his career around, between, and through a serial narrative of his most famous story---the exploding whale of Florence, Oregon. Never heard of it? This event, along with the dynamite, the stench, the rain of blubber, and the resulting 'cover-up', established a comic standard for bureaucratic ineptitude. In his book, Paul answers all the questions and puts to rest the rumors, finally.
More important, this is an honest, insightful look inside television news as used to be, and as many us wish it had remained.
Paul shares as many laughs as nuggets of wisdom.

THIS BOOK HAS ALOT OF IDEAS ON DIFFERENT WAYS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SELF AND HOW TO KNOW IF SOMEONE ELSE IS TAKING CARE OF YOU.
This has got to be the best book on Nutrition.......2002-12-13
I could Not put this book down, I understand so much about the human body now. Not to mention How Dr.'s Do things.
Great Humor too!
This is a Must if you don't want to be a lab mouse anymore.
Like in anything You need to use COMMON SENSE. This makes it easy. I read about Dr. Wallach only found one bad rap.
Excellent home remedy guide for the price.......2002-11-29
After listening to Wallach's "Live doctors do lie tape" I was expecting huge insights in this book. As a long time alternative medicine advocate and long time member of the Life Extension Foundation the insights were not earth shattering but good basic principals and practices. The fourth edition was published in 2000 but there are some discrepancies between the book and Wallach's tape, e.g. the book recommends maintaining a cholesterol level of 180-200 mg/100ml blood whereas the tape 200-250 ? I was also surprised that tylenol was recommended for anything.Overall an excellent addition to one's medical library and I believe Dr. Wallach's message is definitely important-M.D.'s certainly are not "invincible gods" and the average American needs to become aware of the undue influence the drug industry has on standard medical practice in America.

An excellent book but it's sounds as though it would be children's book. It's not. Plain spoken good information.
Unlocking the Mysteries of the Physical Exam.......2001-03-22
This book is GREAT! Neil B. Shulman, MD is an associate professor of medicine at Emory University, where he specializes in hypertension and nephrology. He's also a prolific author (and standup comedian) who wrote the book upon which Michael J. Fox's movie "Doc Hollywood" was based. In "Let's Play Doctor -- Unlocking the Mysteries of the Physical Exam," he explains what's going on during a physical exam from the doctor's point of view. The idea is to help you as a patient understand what's going on and be better able to communicate with your physician. A real keeper!!!
Not the book from Dr. Joel Wallach, Dr. Ma Lan.......2000-06-22
I don't believe that this is the book you may be thinking about from the "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" radio show. Note that the author(s) are not Dr. Joel Wallach and Dr. Ma Lan as you may be expecting.

Book Description
The German rulers were forceful and powerful men, and, surrounded by potential enemies, circumstances dictated the necessity of rule by strength based on military capacity. In the later 15th century, three houses rose above the others; the families of Wittelsbach, Luxemburg and the powerful Austrian Hapsburgs. The struggles of these and other houses, and of the knights and towns, were to be a feature of German history throughout the Middle Ages. This title details the dress, weapons, heraldry and insignia of these prolific forces.
Customer Reviews:
Knechts und knaves.......2002-08-12
The usual good basic coverage by Osprey, covering the Holy Roman Empire. Wars were frequent, between principates, towns and cities, leagues, robber barons, religious groups. It's no wonder that Germany would be the site of some of the bloodiest campaigns during the later Thirty Years' War. There is also an excellent section on the Hussites and their unique method of fighting the Empire. There is even a halfway decent map in this one! The excellent color plates by Angus Mcbride start with chainmail and end with full gothic plate armor.
Book Description
In medieval Germany violence was accepted far more than in other kingdoms. Kings were recognised as guardians of order, but this had its limitations. Lords expected to use force to secure their rights or win an argument when peaceful methods were not sufficient. Christopher Gravett does a fine job of examining the organisation and campaigns of German medieval armies from 1000-1300, in a volume containing plenty of photographs and illustrations, including eight full page colour plates by Graham Turner.
Customer Reviews:
Okay.......2006-07-13
When I got this book, I was hoping it was as it claims a study on German medieval armies from 1000-1300 for example its orgainisation, its fighting styles and weapons systems. Instead what you get is a very basic military history of the battles and campaigns in the region.
As always in this series you get plenty of photographs and illustrations which are good.
