Book Description

John Fitchen systematically treats the process of erecting the great edifices of the Gothic era. He explains the building equipment and falsework needed, the actual operations undertaken, and the sequence of these operations as specifically as they can be deduced today. Since there are no contemporary accounts of the techniques used by medieval builders, Fitchen's study brilliantly pieces together clues from manuscript illuminations, from pictorial representations, and from the fabrics of the building themselves.

"Anyone who has caught the fascination of Gothic Churches (and once caught, has almost necessarily got it in the blood) will find this book enthralling. . . . Clearly written and beautifully illustrated." —A. D. R. Caroe, Annual Review, Central Council for the Care of Churches

"Fitchen's study is a tribute to the extraordinary creative and engineering skills of successive generations of mediaeval builders. . . . This study enables us to appreciate more fully the technical expertise and improvements which enabled the creative spirit of the day to find such splendid embodiment." —James Lingwood, Oxford Art Journal

"Fitchen, in what can only be defined as an architectural detective story, fully explores the problems confronting the medieval vault erectors and uncovers their solution. . . . This is a book that no serious student of architecture will want to miss." —Progressive Architecture

5 out of 5 stars Unique book.......2006-08-07

The only book written on how to build a cathedral. Very informative and helpful to a novice.

5 out of 5 stars Maximum height and maximum light.......2006-08-06

Good introduction to medieval building techniques. Being a devoted admirer of Gothic cathedrals, this was one of the first books I red about the subject and it served well. If you wish to know why was pointed arch so important, or procedures used to erect butresses or types of scaffoldings used at that times... you will find the answers here. There is one drawback - it seems to me that author was repeating some ideas from the first half of the book in the second one, but still, it deserves 5 stars. Kind regards, Mario.

5 out of 5 stars A Gothic Cathedral version of This Old House.......2006-06-25

If you want to know about the details of building a Gothic Cathedral this is IT! I only wish the type front was a little bigger and some of the drawings were enlarged. Some of the construction details are pretty much what we are still doing today.

5 out of 5 stars How did they do it?.......2001-06-17

The builders of Gothic vaults left few clues (written or pictorial) about their actual construction methods. John Fitchen employs induction as well as the skills of a detective to figure out how the vaults were designed and built. Nevertheless, he fails the inquisitive reader at one critical point.

Fitchen states that the stone ribs supporting the Gothic vaults conform to a curve called, in mathematics, a catenary. The mathematics of catenary curves was first described by Robert Hooke in the late 1600s. This was no less than 150 years *after* the Gothic builders completed their last work.

In the absence of a knowledge of the mathematics of catenaries, how did the Gothic builders discover the *only* rib curvature that was self-supporting?

(It's not good enough to say the Gothic builders arrived at the correct catenary curve empirically, that is, by trial and error. There was simply no room for error. All would have come tumbling down.)

4 out of 5 stars A very good description of medieval building techniques.......1999-07-31

In this book, originally published in 1961, John Fitchen describes and explains the falsework (i.e. scaffolding) that was used to build Gothic Cathedrals. The main focus is on the construction and use of the centering (which is the formwork used to build arcs and vaults). The chapters: 1. Sources of information - 2. Constructional means - 3. Medieval types of vaulting - 4. Gothic formwork - 5. Gothic centering - 6. Erection of rib vaulting without formwork. The text is clearly written and accompanied by excellent drawings, a very good glossary and an extensive bibliography. For everyone interested in medieval building techniques this book is a must.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Help!.......2005-08-06

Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced artist, this little book is an essential part of any watercolorist's library.

    5 out of 5 stars A simple resource.......2003-12-21

This is a lovely practical guide. Most books on color or on watercolor color never quite get to the point of what you want out of it, which is plain information and palettes of color.

The Pocket Palette sets up a palette and clearly shows how each color looks when mixed or glazed (painted over another). There honestly isn't another book of this size and practicality out there. This is not necessarily a book on color theory. It is covered but is not the aim of this at-a-glance, application kind of book.

As this book is concise, this review will be concise! This book, plus a color wheel and a short book on color theory (a Walter Foster book will even do) should fill out your arsenal for dealing with watercolor color. (That might seem like a lot, but for a lifetime of using watercolors it is the least you can do for yourself.) This book is an excellent value, even if it is short, and it IS portable, perfect to bring along with your sketchbook and notes.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading, best to do it with your own materials.......2003-04-10

I purchased this little book with high hopes that it would be a timesaver, but I was disappointed enough to return it. There are several types of problems. First, although I could find no statement of this, all the paints used are Winsor & Newton; if you use even similarly named paints from another company, the printed results of mixing and overpainting will be irrelevant. Second, only the Winsor & Newton names for the colors are given, and no pigment information is supplied. This is inexcusable, since formulations change even with a single manufacturer, and "Bright Red," fpr example, means one set of pigment ingredients and properties for Winsor and Newton, but completely different ones for paints from other companies. Third, a statement is made that all paints depicted are durable. This is untrue and potentially disastrous for anyone who trusts this statement. For example, it is well known that alizarin crimson and genuine rose madder (both in the primary palette oin this book) are easily damaged by light; permanent alternatives must be used if a painting is to be hung in a normally lit room. Finally, results will vary depending on the paper you use, and -- this one is not the fault of the book -- color reproduction in printing can never truly match what really happens on the paper. It's a pretty little book, well put together physically, but it is often misleading and is in no way a valid substitute for making your own notebook of color mixes and relevant information. This is essential both for understanding the properties of your pigments and paper in the first place but also for recording the compositions and behaviors of mixes used in your paintings.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun and useful too!.......2001-01-29

If you want to learn how to mix watercolor without getting "mud" then this is for you. It is not a substitute for the real experience of mixing colors for yourself and watching what happens (such as any blue with cadmium red. Did you get a purple? Hmmm! Interesting!)

The section on mixing flesh tones is especially helpful. It's fun just to browse this book and enjoy the tonal variety. A really nice book, in a small, portable format. One of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful color mixing........2000-04-11

Being new to watercolor painting, this book has been extremely helpful to me in determining the mixtures to use to create the colors I need. I've just sent one to a friend who is just beginning classes in watercolor and I'm sure she'll enjoy it as much as I have.

If you want a cheap guide in price, this is the book for you. It has a lot of information on Kodak camera's. The book is separated in to different models and has a black and white picture of each. There is no color in it.I wish the paper it was printed on was of better quality.

This book provides a very valuable reference that is obviously something the author researched extensively. One of the better vintage Kodak references around! Combined with Brian Coe's excellent Kodak reference, you would certainly have nearly everything you needed about vintage Kodak cameras!

It's really a useful and wonderful guide to most famous kodak cameras marketed into US. The author says that different books can help the KODAK cameras amateurs/collectors for items marketed abroad or belonging at the grat family of "HAWK-EYE" and "PREMO". These books are out of print and I really wish a reprintin of them. It would to be useful (for European collectors as I am) to have any "catalog" showing all items ONLY marketed and producted for the EUROPE. Anyway IF YOU CAN FIND A COPY don't miss this! It's the LAST

I may assume you have updated this book, as mine does not have disc cameras mentioned. Covers most topics untill you become so specialized, you need to find out your own information- sometimes very difficult. Excellent standard text for the average collector.Peter Venema

          Book Description

Animation art is among the most popular contemporary art forms. It captivates the imagination and awakens the child in us. With nearly 6800 pieces of animation art illustrated in this exciting book, most in color, Jeff Lotman covers the early period of animation, from the founding of the Winsor McKay Studio in 1911 to 1954 (a future volume will continue to the present). The art illustrated was offered at auction, which means that it is in the marketplace, an important fact for collectors. In addition to the 6,800 illustrated pieces, there is a listing of sales for several thousand additional pieces for which illustrations were unavailable. The book contains prices paid for the pieces at auction, making it a wonderful tool for assigning value. Mr. Lotman also shares his expansive knowledge of the art and the collecting. The animation process is explained in detail and important information for collectors is shared. This is easily the most comprehensive heavily illustrated view of animation art ever produced. It is a must have for every collector.

            Book Description

When Bob Greene went home to central Ohio to be with his dying father, it set off a chain of events that led him to knowing his dad in a way he never had before—thanks to a quiet man who lived just a few miles away, a man who had changed the history of the world.

Greene's father—a soldier with an infantry division in World War II—often spoke of seeing the man around town. All but anonymous even in his own city, carefully maintaining his privacy, this man, Greene's father would point out to him, had "won the war." He was Paul Tibbets. At the age of twenty-nine, at the request of his country, Tibbets assembled a secret team of 1,800 American soldiers to carry out the single most violent act in the history of mankind. In 1945 Tibbets piloted a plane—which he called Enola Gay, after his mother—to the Japanese city of Hiroshima, where he dropped the atomic bomb.

On the morning after the last meal he ever ate with his father, Greene went to meet Tibbets. What developed was an unlikely friendship that allowed Greene to discover things about his father, and his father's generation of soldiers, that he never fully understood before.

Duty is the story of three lives connected by history, proximity, and blood; indeed, it is many stories, intimate and achingly personal as well as deeply historic. In one soldier's memory of a mission that transformed the world—and in a son's last attempt to grasp his father's ingrained sense of honor and duty—lies a powerful tribute to the ordinary heroes of an extraordinary time in American life.

What Greene came away with is found history and found poetry—a profoundly moving work that offers a vividly new perspective on responsibility, empathy, and love. It is an exploration of and response to the concept of duty as it once was and always should be: quiet and from the heart. On every page you can hear the whisper of a generation and its children bidding each other farewell.

            5 out of 5 stars Touching book.......2007-01-11

Great book, I have grown to really like Bob Greene. I have bought many of his books and and reading them as fast as I can. This book brings the people who fought WWII for us and why they did it and makes them real. I am learning to really appreciate their sacrifices.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL MEMOIR AND TRIBUTE.......2005-02-18

This is a good work. As one disgruntled reviewer pointed out, this is not a history book, but rather a memoir and tribute from a son to his father and to one of the many heros of WWII. Having been raised by a father from that era, it is quite apparent to me that my relationship with my father was my no means isolated, but somewhat the norm. This work struck pretty close to home. Having spent over twenty years in the military myself, I can understand some of their thoughts, but even that cannot bridge the entire gap. Those guys looked at life differently than my generation. The author has approached the subject with great sensitivity and through his conversations with these men, I feel, has been able to understand not only them, but himself. I highly recommend this one to any father and any son. Well done Mr Greene.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute From a Son to His Father.......2003-03-26

Bob Greene has written a touching and emotion-filled book about two men who influenced the outcome of World War II; his own father and Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay. Greene's father served as an infantry soldier in Italy, while Tibbets was training his men in Wendover, Utah for a mission which would hopefully end the war.

Tibbets and Robert Greene, Sr. lived in the same town in Ohio, but had never met. Bob jr. writes about how his father would speak of Tibbets and call him "the man who won the war". While Bob jr. was back in Ohio to be with his dying father, he drew on his memories of Tibbets. Finally, Bob went to meet Tibbets. What occured was the beginning of an unlikely friendship that spanned a generation and allowed Bob to discover things about his father and his father's generation that he never understood before.

Bob found Tibbets to be a very honest and straight-forward man. There was no nonsense from him; everything was in plain terms. Tibbets talked frequently about his mission to Hiroshima on that fateful day in August, 1945. He said several times that he had no regrets for what he did and he always slept easy at night. Tibbets' stories enabled Bob to see that his father and many other men just like him also played large parts in winning the war. Tibbets never liked the phrase "the man who won the war". He was always quick to give credit to the soldiers as the real heroes, just like Robert sr.

Perhaps my favorite part of the book is the several chapters which deal with the trip to Branson, Missouri. Bob, Tibbets, Tom Ferebee (bombardier), and "Dutch" Van Kirk (navigator) took a trip to Branson over Memorial Day weekend and they were treated like conquering heroes by the public. But what impressed me was the candor and openness that these men spoke with. I learned a lot about the Hiroshima mission that I never knew before.

I found this book a little slow at the beginning, but it definitely picks up over the second half. Read this book and learn about the generation of men who won the war.

5 out of 5 stars A book about a hero and a father and how much are alike.......2003-02-18

A great book about a true hero and other's worthy of the same label. A very easy and engaging read. I highly recommend this book.

            2 out of 5 stars A disappointment ........2003-02-14

I have seen Bob Greene on some of the news stories on TV. I like his wit and sentiment. I was prepared for a great book on the great generation that produced his and my father. I was disappointed.
First, the book is disjointed. It goes from sentiment to sentiment, and then reverts back again. In his talks with General Paul Tidbitts, I thought he kept dwelling on the same emotions of a hard military decision. That decision was made long ago, and why keep hammering away at it. Bob, just get over it. The U.S. had to bomb Japan to spare the lives of American soldiers and sailors.
Another problem I have with this book is its lack of history. It tells a little of the history of his father, some of Tidbitts, and then a little on the Doolittle Raiders. Other than that, it is pure sentiment, repeated again and again. For a 300 page book, this could have been cut to 80 pages. I read this book, and it was a disappointment. If one wants to remember the Greatest Generation, read something from Ambrose.

5 out of 5 stars An essential tool for every mother.......2003-09-18

This book is just phenomenal! When you are close to becoming a parent, everybody makes you believe that it's so complicated, that you have to read everything or you won't be ready, and there is so much information out there, plus you get bombarded by magazines and subscriptions that you never signed up for ... anyway, it's easy to get scared, you can't find the right answer, you feel you are not going to be prepared. Well, the only book which we felt really helped us with practical tools and checklists was France Posener's. All you need is in there, she streamlines to the essentials, she even includes reassuring little anecdotes that will make you feel better. Thanks a lot France!

                    5 out of 5 stars A First-Time Mother's True Helper!.......2003-01-20

This book was given to my husband and I, along with many other books, when we announced our pregnancy. The practical suggestions and real-world advice that this book provides far outshines many of the highly publicized books that are currently so popular. When preparing to stock our nursery with the essentials needed upon arrival of our baby I literally took the book into the store and purchased my much needed items off the list entitled "Predelivery Essentials." It was helpful beyond words and I highly recommend new parents to obtain and actually use this book. It has made preparing for our new bundle of joy a much more focused and empowering experience than had we gone it alone. I look forward to using it as my baby grows and for having it as a keepsake for this precious time in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource and Keepsake.......2003-01-03

My husband and I were thrilled when we received this baby book as a gift. Not only is it a great place to record your baby's milestones, but a invaluable resource as well. It will help you get organized, and provides you with essential checklists that no parent should be without. For example, there's a Feeding Record, Medical Record, Child Care Record and many other helpful tools. It is also beautifully designed!

                    Book Description

The debate about the "Military Revolution" has been one of the most controversial and exciting areas of discussion and research in the fields of early modern European history and military history. Scholars have long sought to explain the massive changes in European military techniques and technologies that took place between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the industrial age-changes that transformed the armies and navies of the West into the most powerful war-making entities the world had ever known. Historians have disagreed about and vigorously debated the importance of these changes for European politics, for the process of state formation, for the rise of the West, and for warfare itself. This book brings together, for the first time, the classic articles that began and have shaped this debate, adding important new essays by eminent historians of early modern Europe to further this important scholarly interchange. The contributors consider topics ranging from the battlefield to the gunmaker's workshop, from England to India, and from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The Military Revolution Debate will be required reading for anyone interested in what is undoubtedly one of the hottest areas in military history today.

4 out of 5 stars Defining the Debate.......2001-09-03

This book is a collection of essays and articles on the Military Revolution in early modern Europe. Eleven prominent historians contributed to the collection with original works or reprints of earlier articles. Taken together the anthology is not the sum total of the debate, but an excellent compilation of the several positions that military historians have taken and defended with regard to this topic.
The editor, Clifford J. Rodgers is now a contract professor at the United States Military Academy. When this book was created Rodgers was an Olin Fellow at Yale University. The book, according to Rodgers, was inspired by events during a conference at the 1991 meeting of the American Military Institute in Durham, North Carolina. During that conference Rodgers, Geoffrey Parker, John Guilmartin and John Lynn gave short presentations on the topic after which the discussion was opened to the audiance. The spirited debate and discourse that followed served as the catalyst for this book.
The Military Revolution was first put forward by Michael Roberts in the 1950s. Twenty years passed before Geoffrey Parker took a poke at the thesis. The fundamental idea here is that there are (or have been) times when something, be it technology, doctrine, social changes or economic changes, changed and caused one military to surpass all others such that the others had to adapt, adopt, or perish. That's a "Military Revolution" in a nutshell, and these historians argue (admittedly over, and over, and over...) as to what the periods that should be considered "revolutionary" actually were.
Informed and scholarly, this book is worth the cost from an intellectual standpoint.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic RMA Debate.......2000-12-15

"The Military Revolution Debate" is the magnus opus on the revolution in military affairs representative of early modern Europe. Editor and author Clifford Rogers presents a series of compelling articles designed to revisit one of the classic debate topics among military historians and contemporary theorists. The art and practice of warfare changed significantly during the period addressed by Rogers and others, a revolution in military affairs unlike any in previous history and only rivaled by the events of the past quarter-century.

This masterpiece is a necessary addition to anyone seriously researching the revolution/evolution of military affairs in the western world. The changes that occurred in early modern Europe and discussed at length by the various authors had an unimaginable ifluence on the wars of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries and will continue to shape events far into this millenium.

Rogers has collected the most serious and noteworthy essays by the foremost authorities on the subject. Readers will not be disappointed with this exceptional book.

                    3 out of 5 stars 'revolution'ary?.......2000-04-18

This reviewer has extensively analyzed this book as part of a course in late medieval and early renaissance military history. My usual subject is the early Crusades, and I had hoped to broaden my understanding of later centuries' conflicts through this work.

Rogers' introduction sums up the general theme of the book, that the demands of late medieval and early modern military (hen) required societal change on an broad and varied scale (egg). This is the one concept upon which the contributors agree.

The medievalist is going to find this work difficult in many respects, too numerous to investigate properly in this forum. Simply put, misconceptions abound. The basic thesis goes so far as to denigrate the medieval military era and divorce the modern from these roots entirely! Fortunately there are other contributors to counter this argument and even to argue the revolution was strictly a medieval phenomenon.

The essays herein are essentially divided into two camps of pro- and anti-revolution, and the book really demonstrates the evolution of the concept. The reader sees the genesis and construction of the idea, then its evaluation. Finally we see the demise of the concept in several vivid examples. The penultimate essay contributes a fine idea; the 'military revolution' is a line of inquiry, not a discrete event. (Unfortunately this is that essay's only redeeming feature.) The book closes with a defence by a long-standing subscriber to the revolution theory, thus failing to achieve any synthesis. It is a very disappointing end to what is a problematic but considerate effort.

Scope of the essays ranges from Sweden to the Ottoman Empire, from the Hundred Years War to the 18th.c., from the vast Spanish kingdom to the tiny county of Gonzaga. Focus varies from the general to the minute; there is an excellent analysis of the gold futures mortaging by the late medieval Spanish Crown.

In all it is a very long read for anyone not actively interested in the early modern period or the niceties of academic debate; indeed this reviewer is left with the impression that the revolutionary construct has had a long life and needs replacing.

However this book is certainly useful as a reference on the corpus of thought on a difficult subject, and crucial to understanding the last 50 years of research on the subject of medieval vs modern military practise. The revolution is now such a prevalent subject that it continues to be applied in completely different areas, so it is useful to be familiar with this work.

5 out of 5 stars A must for reference work.......2000-04-06

This is an incredible book that provides a single point of reference on the major interpetations of the Military Revolution. For the Military Revolution novice, like myself, this is the book to begin research with. The hypothesisses are complimentary and provide for an easy, interesting read.
