The HOME House Project brings such imagining closer to reality. This book chronicles a multi-year national design initiative aimed at addressing issues of design, affordability, and sustainability in housing. Launched by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, this project challenged designers and architects to imagine a world in which sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, technologies, and techniques were considered important elements of housing for low- and moderate-income families.

A SECCA-sponsored open competition in 2003 drew 440 entries from the United States and six other countries, all using Habitat for Humanity's three- and four-bedroom house plans as a point of departure for the design of affordable and environmentally friendly housing. This book, published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition, documents the 25 prize-winning designs as well as fifty other selected submissions with 396 color illustrations. The accompanying text includes Michael Sorkin's essay connecting democratic values to quality of housing, Ben Nicholson's satiric critique of American excess, Steve Badanes's insights on the social responsibilities of architects, and HOME House Project Director David Brown's overview of the project and its continuing evolution.

Interesting Designs.......2007-05-07

The book features +-100 designs for affordable and green housing. These homes are a result of a design competition using as program the Habitat for Humanity guidelines: small sq. ft. and low budgets. In addition these homes needed to be environmentally friendly. Among the designs are some very conceptual ones that actually will never be built, but is a good theoretical approach. There are many others that in fact, are 100% buildable and their solutions are very creative and diverse. I believe some of the winning designs are up for construction.
This is a perfect book for students, professionals, environmentalists and people who appreciate progressive architecture in general.

No 'Real World' Relevence.......2006-03-21

Although interesting, these are designs and concepts that are not practical in the real world. But, if all you want are some pretty pictures...

A valuable historical perspective but of limited use today.......2001-01-13

This book presents an interesting dichotomy: on the one hand it is a seminal publication on sculpting and animal anatomy, on the other is is hopelessly out of date rendering some of the information within of questionable value.

Originally published in 1911 (!) Lanteri was a teacher to Rodin, amongst others, and there is a touching letter from him reproduced at the start. I think one should remember reading this the perspective of the writer - a sculptor of the French 19th century style, moreover a sculptor of monuments from this period - which almost by definition demand a fairly clinical approach. The resulting pieces are of undoubted skill, and I personally am a great admirer of this school of representation, but many will find them a bit sterile I suspect.

The book is subdivided into 18 chapters, beginning with introductory remarks on the symbolism of sculptural representations of animals in disparate cultures. The second chapter is over eight pages of text discussing the horse, mentioning breeds, characteristics and other points with comment on form and movement. Chapter III is on the sculpting of a quarter-scale model of a horse, with supporting diagrams and sequential photos. The next chapter is short, concerning proportions and the next is even shorter, on refinement of the model. Chapter VI is titled "Some Special Points" and here we get to the meat (literally!) with over 30 pages of clear anatomical diagrams showing the muscles and skeleton of the horse in plan and side views. Chapter VII is on general principles with quotes from a number of "men of great artistic value" and includes four views of a sculpted anatomical study of the horse showing stunning mastery of form and detail. The next five chapters essentially deal with scaling up the model to full size using a laborious but obviously workable technique called pointing and chapter XIII is on pointing a relief. Chapter XIV discusses sculptural representation of other animals and XV through XVIII deal with sculpting the lion and then the bull, again with detailed anatomical drawings. The final three-part section, on casting in plaster, rounds out the book and here it really shows its age as I believe that modern materials like casting rubbers and alginates have almost completely done away with destructive casting methods (where the original and then the mould are both destroyed to make the final plaster).

The bulk of the information contained within this books is in the text and herein lies another problem: this is a translation from French into English (and Edwardian English to boot) and the text although it has a certain charm can come across as dry, even aloof. Even when the information is of value, and there is a great deal of importance here, it will be difficult in this day and age for the casual reader to sift through and I have a suspicion that without some formal art training, or at least a fair knowledge of anatomy and/or sculpting techniques, it will prove impenetrable.

In summary, for the serious student interested in monumental sculpture, particularly in this historical context, this is a must-have but for the casual reader and those seeking a how-to on sculpting animals I'd give this a skip. For those interested there is a companion book on sculpting the human figure.

Kinky cartoon erotica at its most prurient and fun.......2005-11-28

The Bondage Fairies seem to exist because of an extreme dare between cartoonists. Be prepared for something that's simultaneously perverted, funny, appalling, goofy, raunchy, sexually explicit and weirdly innocent all at once. I can't rate this book in comparison to other Bondage Fairies books, but I was personally very happy with this purchase.

The black and white manga-style graphic artistry is fluid, quite energetic, hard-core erotic and still quite fun to look at. The book itself is a collection of short stories that follow the adventures of two mouse-sized flying fairies. The bondage fairies are actually responsible for protecting the forest and its smallest creatures, but this never gets accomplished without our heroines either ravishing each other, or getting ravished by various insects and small mammals. Of course, these encounters are all straightforward metaphors for recognizable erotic fetishes and BDSM fantasies. This may sound grotesque, to say the least, but the preposterous story set-ups and illustrations actually pull off the trick of keeping the mood erotic and even funny. The bondage fairies definitely have an oddly compelling appeal because these stories never take themselves seriously or come across as dark. No matter what the peril, our faerie protagonists always come away enthusiastically satisfied, without shame and ready for the next adventure.

But be warned: if you are at all offended by domination and submission, stiletto heels, latex, rape fantasies, bondage, underwear sniffing, talking dirty, spanking, masturbation, or the objectification of nubile fairies, save your money.

IF you liked The Orginal Bondage Fairies then you should love this one. Even though it is not as good, there are about 5 short stories and the balck and white pictures are nicely done. It is NOT as good as the first.

WOW THIS BOOK WAS BAD. THE BOOK STARTS OUT WHEN SHE ENTERS A TREATMENT PROGRAM SO YOU ONLY GET GLIMPSES OF THE 12 YEARS LEADING UP TO TREATMENT. IN THE PROGRAM ALL SHE DOES IS CRY,WHINE AND THROW TANTRUMS. SHE GETS A CRUSH ON ONE OF THE MARRIED PATIENTS AND THEY PASSED LOVE NOTES LIKE THEY WERE IN GRADE SCHOOL. THE BOOK FEELS LIKE IT WAS WRITTEN BY A TEENAGER. SHE ALSO CLAIMS THAT WHEN SHE WAS 3 YEARS OLD SHE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR SEVERE BURNS AND HER NURSES TOLD HER TO GROW UP AND QUIT CRYING AND WERE VERY ROUGH WITH HER. I had purchased this book for an adult child of friends but thought I'd better read it first. What a book!! Many people can identify with the issues being addressed, even if they don't have an eating disorder!

It is an easy and quick read (outside of the emtional reaction times) and I highly reccommend it to anyone who has an eating disorder or knows someone who has - VERY POWERFUL!!!

Again Mr. Walters has done the collector and history buff a valuable service.
A rather large list from various countries with more thana generic paragraph althoguh not a full all inclusive text book history on each either.
Every collector as such should have a copy. Great gift idea for any new collector or History mined indivdual.

Book Description

Society in the Keo region of the eastern Indonesian island of Flores reveals a pervasive pairing of villages, clans, and other groups. Apart from introducing a hitherto undescribed population, this study, deriving from fieldwork conducted by the author over a period of 15 years, analyses a form of society that has occupied anthropologists since the inception of their discipline: morphological dualism, or dual organization. Drawing on a notion of encompassment inspired by Dumont's theory of 'hierarchy', the author interprets dualistic social forms as products of a continuous process of combination and a tendency to create binary wholes through the partial assimilation of junior by senior partners. While Keo exemplifies a variant of a widespread eastern Indonesian pattern of binary classification and asymmetric marriage alliance, the analysis shows how Keo morphological dualism cannot be reduced to the categories of a dual classification nor to unique or exclusive forms of reciprocity or functional complementarity. Exploring these issues through original ethnographic studies of numerous Keo domains and settlements, the book is of critical relevance not just to dualism, but to a variety of continuing concerns in contemporary social anthropology, including the concept of 'descent', the social construction of inequality, and connections between ritual practice (especially animal sacrifice), and social order.

The theme of the above conference was the SYNERGY generated by the interaction of the different disciplines relevant to ERF and MRS investigations. To stimulate this theme, all lecture sessions included a mixture of papers - one session contained applications, methodology, particle dynamics, structure characteristics and whatever is germane to the objective of furthering the standing of the subject. 'Lead-in' lectures were given by experts who had not recently been able to explain their work to colleagues in their own discipline. They were also charged with justifying the relevance of their area of work to the ESF/MRS field as a whole.
