Customer Reviews:
5-star book for visual learners.......2005-03-15
"Tom Lynch's Watercolor Secrets" is a 5-star watercolor technique book for visual learners. Alas, I am not a visual learner, and so much of the impact was lost. If you are, I strongly recommend you get this book.
All lessons are displayed mainly in comparison pictures: the same scene done two ways, once without the recommended technique, and once with the recommended technique. This is the "salvage paintings" stuff that other reviewers mention. These painting comparisons are scattered throughout the book and cover all topics. The comparison pictures are very effective pictoral representations of the technique lessons described herein.
For myself, I don't like landscapes and I wasn't particularly impressed by the author's painting style. Still, this book has a lot of useful advice on painting technique.
Pretty good but not great -- just misses the finishing touch.......2005-01-23
When you get into reading this book to learn his "secrets," some of the information is really thin. It has some really great parts that give insight, like his section on color. It opened my eyes to new ways of painting -- outside of the box! With many of the pictures, a few step by step "in progress" points would have been super helpful -- that's where it just misses. If you have a lot of skill, you may be able to read "the picture" and see things from other chapters and get the deeper concept. I, being new, can NOT even begin to do that yet, so it is a great read and gives good insight, but it is a book to read after reading some of the conceptual walk-you-through-it books that exist. So, not allllll of his secrets really are revealed. :-)
Nice Art Work---Book Needs Better Text.......2004-06-07
A great concept with wonderful illustrations by Tom Lynch but lacking descriptions of the techniques and pigment use employed. Like the other reviewer I found the secrets still secrets and not revealing enough information. This publishers books seem to follow this pattern as with Alvaro Castagnet book Watercolor Painting with Passion (beautiful and inspiring illustrations by Castagnet but lacking decent text of the techniques and use of pigments used).
However, aside from the lacking technical information, Lynch's work is wonderful and inspiring.
OK BUT NOT ENOUGH DETAIL AND EXPLANATION!!.......2004-02-02
THIS BOOK NEEDS MORE DETAIL AND TECHNIQUE IN MUCH BETTER FORM. I APPRECIATE GOOD ART BOOKS AND THIS ONE COULD BE A LOT BETTER..
One of my very favorites.......2003-12-18
Out of the dozens and dozens of watercolor books that I own this is one of the few that I return time after time for new insights on composition and technique. I've tried several times to get into one of Tom's seminars but scheduling conflicts prevented it. One day I'll attend and have him autograph my dog-earred, paint-splattered worn out old copy of this great book on watercolor painting! If you do buy it don't just read it and place it on the shelf...use it and abuse it... throw some paint on some paper and practice the techniques and you'll see the value!

Greek Sculpture and the Problem of Description
ASIN: 0521772672 |
Book Description
During the sixth and fifth centuries BC, Greek sculpture developed into a fine art. With the human figure as its main subject, artists worked to represent it in increasingly natural terms. This book explores the material aspects of Greek sculpture at a pivotal phase in its evolution. Considering typologies and function, an international team of experts traces the development of technical characteristics of marble and bronze sculpture, the choice of particular marbles in different areas, and the types of monuments that were created on the Greek mainland, the islands and the west coast of Asia.

Jeanne Marie Laskas is 37, with a house, garden, dog, cat, flourishing writing career--all of the perfect ingredients, in fact, of a happy city-person's life--when a childhood dream resurfaces. It is a farm dream, this "song I couldn't get out of my head," and it would make more sense, she ruefully admits, if she were "at least the farm dream type. A person with some deep personal longing to churn butter." But not Laskas. She likes malls. She eats Lean Cuisine. She believes "very deeply in the power of air conditioning, microwave ovens, and very many things you plug in." Nonetheless, she spends weekends on make-believe "farm shopping" excursions with her boyfriend, Alex, who is another city person, a shrink and the owner of an honest-to-goodness poodle--a farm dream disqualifier, if ever there were one. Then, one summer afternoon, the perfect place appears, and it's very real: fifty acres, a pond, an Amish barn, and a magnificent view out over the rolling hills of Pennsylvania's Washington County. They fall in love. They buy the farm. Goodbye, city-person life.
But the scenery with which they fell in love is not quite like the scenery in postcards. Things need to be done to it, and all of these things involve buying and learning how to use different kinds of tractor attachments. And then there are the neighbors: the sheep farmer who shoots dogs, the curious proliferation of Joe Crowleys, everywhere the hunters. ("Congratulations on your ... dead deer," is all Alex can think to say to them.) Over the year that follows, the two city slickers find out a great deal about livestock, tractor attachments, and themselves; all of which is related in Laskas's funny, warm, conversational style. As she leaves behind her ordered, interior world for one that's gorgeously, chaotically exterior, Fifty Acres and a Poodle becomes much more than just a book about learning to live in the country; it is, in fact, a book about learning to live--dead groundhogs, emotional messes, and all. You don't need your own farm dream to fall in love with this witty and winning memoir, but it wouldn't hurt to look through the real estate pages, just in case. --Mary Park
Book Description
Jeanne Marie Laskas had a dream of fleeing her otherwise happy urban life for fresh air and open space — a dream she would discover was about something more than that. But she never expected her fantasy to come true — until a summer afternoon’s drive in the country.
That’s when she and her boyfriend, Alex — owner of Marley the poodle — stumble upon the place she thought existed only in her dreams. This pretty-as-a-picture-postcard farm with an Amish barn, a chestnut grove, and breathtaking vistas is real ... and for sale. And it’s where she knows her future begins.
But buying a postcard — fifty acres of scenery — and living on it are two entirely different matters. With wit and wisdom, Laskas chronicles the heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of the colorful two- and four-legged creatures she encounters on Sweetwater Farm.
Against a backdrop of brambles, a satellite dish, and sheep, she tells a tender, touching, and hilarious tale about life, love, and the unexpected complications of having your dream come true.
Customer Reviews:
Fifty Acres and a Poodle.......2007-08-16
I love this book and this author, I bought her second book and enjoyed it as well.
Heartwarming, comical and hard to put down!.......2007-07-16
Fifty Acres & A Poodle is about the author Jeanne Marie Laskas' dreams of farm living. She wants to get away from the urban way of life and move to a place with beauty and fresh air. She feels there is something missing from her life. She takes a drive one day and spots her dream place. She goes through doubts and fears but finally decides to go for her dream.
She and her boyfriend Alex move into the farmhouse, fix it up, get engaged and later married. They end up with a horse and a mule too! Not to mention they end up with some great friends.
More than the basic story, I found this about the author's search for God, her true self and a live filled with love. She wanted to love and be loved. Those were the very things she felt were missing in her life and she found them at her farm. I found myself identifing with Ms. Laskas through much of the book.
If you like memoir-type stories that are comical, honest, soul searching and about animals this book will not disappoint you. Invest in the hardcover as it's one book you probably will not want to part with after reading it.
Coming of Age - In Mid Life.......2007-04-09
Told in first person, with lots of humor, but a deep side as well. The big questions come to mind as this 30's something gal consideres a move from city dweller to farm hand, from girl friend to wife. Causes one to ponder about the meaning of love, life and friends. Well written, enjoyable story.
I had to read all of them.......2007-01-10
I have been a fan of Jeanne Marie Laskas ever since she starting writing a column in Ladies Home Journal. After laughing my head off at one of the articles - it occured to me to see if she had any books. SCORE! I was so excited that she had three! I got the first one and read it in two sittings. I ordered the Exact Same Moon during a snack break on that first sitting and the minute that one "shipped" I ordered Growing Girls.
I loved every single one of them.
I've loaned them out so many times now - I don't know who has them and ended up buying another copy of each!
Must read!
What a tale!.......2006-11-06
I read the "sequel" first, so this book was even more interesting...I won't spoil it by telling you why! The author shares the story of a major shift in her life in a way that reads like fiction. The characters, the backdrop of a beautiful farm, the barely believable experiences all come together to spin a yarn of exceptional quality. It made me yearn to follow the same path - bumps, ruts, floods and all. Escapism at its very best - her attitude is honest, her writing exceptionaland the story itself makes you feel as though you have gained an invaluable friend. Be sure to read her next book - how wonderful to know you can continue along on her journey!

Book Description
The decision, in Spring 1948, to form two battalions of Foreign Legion paratroopers was prompted by the requirement for enlarged airborne forces in Indochina, and the healthy recruitment then employed by the Legion. There were some initial doubts. The Legion were known to be magnificent heavy infantry, but were felt by some to lack the flexibility and agility demanded by independent airborne operations. In the Legion itself there were some misgivings over the possible clash between the self-consciously exclusive 'para mentality', and the Legion's own very marked ésprit de corps. Over time, however, all these doubts evaporated with experience.
Customer Reviews:
The Paratroopers.......2000-04-26
The book from my point of view was great! I found it interesting how everything was explained and the bit of history about the unit was just the last spice to make the book worth reading.. It explains the different tasks of the 2REP wich are the paratroopers of the french foreign legion. Their hard training and tough life is described as well as the requierments of getting accepted.. Even some own stories of the reasons of joining. A great book about the elite force of the legion. Even special unit C.R.A.P.s are mentioned and explained as well as the naval and attackdiverunit the DINOPS... I, as a great admirer of the legion and other elite forces today found this book educational, informative and very well written! It has all and evenmore.. My advice is, as I have read most of the books out there, Buy It!

Book Description
Scientists have convinced all reasonable people that the Earth is a globe circling the sun, that microbes can cause illness, that matter can be converted into energy, and that sheep can be cloned. Why, then, have scientists failed to convince so many thoughtful people that the first living thing and all subsequent species evolved by neo-Darwinian processes? Experts tend to shrink this problem into a simplistic either/or choice: Accept the theory of evolution by natural selection, or practice religion and believe that God created the universe and life in six days as Genesis says! These authors stress that only two answers can exist; one scientific, the other religious. What's more, for them the only acceptable scientific theory is the intrinsically unalterable, 150-year old view of the brilliant naturalist Charles Darwin, who knew nothing about biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology. Peter Hertli proposes that we breach the constraining and false either/or dichotomy. He invites us to look at the history of living things in terms of three myths, or generally accepted explanations of mysterious events. They may be in the form of sacred scriptures like Genesis, or based on the pronouncements of a venerable authority, repeated and elaborated on as in the case of Darwin's evolution by natural selection. These two myths are based on miracles, or violations of natural laws. Peter Hertli offers a third myth of life's appearance and proliferation that dispenses with violations of natural laws. The author will lead you through the three myths, offering three guiding principles for this adventure: Rule 1: No irreverence toward anyone's religious convictions. Rule 2: Review neo-Darwinism, first uncritically, then critically. We will find countless instances of unacceptably low probabilities of events needed to make evolution by natural selection a scientifically plausible explanation. Rule 3: Agree to take a daring excursion into terra incognito, where quantum mechanics is part of the evolutionary process.
