This book offers a moving and tragic account of the history, creation, and the ultimate demise of the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City. An elegant symbol of turn-of-the-century classicism, the station was designed by the preeminent architects of the period, McKim, Mead & White, and completed in 1910. Accompanied by 80 vintage photographs, Lorraine Diehl lovingly documents the labor involved in the creation of this great building and traces the mid-20th-century development interests and capitalist forces that destroyed it in 1963. While there was no public outcry to save the building, once New Yorkers realized the extent of their loss, it helped pave the way for a nationwide preservation movement. This book convincingly reasserts the profound importance of our public urban architecture--culturally, socially, and aesthetically--to our collective memory and history.
Book Description
This work traces the history of the creation, operation, and demolition of New York's Pennsylvania Station.

The Human Side of the Temple of Transportation.......2007-01-07
Much has been written about the late, great, Pennsylvania Station, and yet it can never be too much. This landmark should be standing today, with it's pink granite shinning in the sun, and being a becon in cloudy weather. In the 1960's, in many other cities their grand "Union Stations" were being sectioned off and abandonded, some are still standing as ruins today, this is part of the irony of Penn Station's demise, even in the 1960's there were hundreds of passenger trains using the facility daily, and this number has been climbing since.
The author gives us all the facts and figures about this station, from it's planning, short life, and needless destruction. However she also paints the human picture of this building, and in doing so lets us understand how the public allowed this building to slip away.
The opening of Penn Station was celebrated during the final years of the Gilded Age, acted as shelter to thousands during the Great Depression, and it served as a virtual military base during the WW II years.
To the multitudes of returning vets, and their famalies, the railroads and Penn Station represented the past, and times that they all would rather forget. Remember back then there was not the mental health counselling available to the returning soldiers, and one way they coped was to simply forget the past, and all that it contained.
In this book we see that the stations fate was sealed with VJ Day, and the social changes that started to take shape with WW II's end.
By the 1950's, Airplanes and Interstate Highways were in, Railroads were out. Yet at least in the NYC area, commuter trains still played an important role that never went away. The beautiful building was allowed to decay, and was altered by a private company without any accontability required to the public.
By the early 1960's some of the public finally woke up, and NYC's Landmark Preservation Committee was formed, by it was too late for the "Temple of Transportation".
This book also contains an excellent compliment of photos, including a number from the 4 year, yes, four year period it took to destroy the station.

What was the most beautiful station in America.......2005-10-17
Very good book which takes into account the historical background of why Penn Station was built in the first place right through to its destruction. A tragic loss not only for New Yorkers but for America and this book describes it well.
Masterpiece.......2005-09-07
This book is facinating and so well written, I really could not put it down, the author has a real sence for the history and importance of the building, I agree it could have used more visuals, but that is a minor quibble and really does not take away from the merit of the book. I must take some exception to the review of Mr. Jendrysic, in all due respect he misses the point totally of perservation when he says the building was a white elephant that was in the wrong place and in the red, that may have all been true, but in those cases you find other uses for the building, like Paris did with the Orsay train station and the colossel Louvre as well as Versailles, I mean would you call for the pulling down of Versailles??? and the Orsey Museum is spectacular. This was not just any building, this was a masterpiece a true treasure, that could have been coverted to other uses, buildings of this quality should be persevered, period, not torn down like some 50's tract house. I highly recommend this book in everyway, if you have any interest in great buildings or just wonderful books quite frankly, then you will not be disappointed in this book, you are right about one think Mr. Jendrysic this book is first rate.
North Dakota?.......2005-04-10
Mr. Mark S. Jendrysik is from North Dakota. What in the world would he know or care about New York City? Judging by his past reviews, he is a big business apologist in a square state in the middle of nowhere.
A native New Yorker myself, I could not imagine my city without Grand Central, for instance, or SoHo, Central Park or the historic area of Chelsea and the West Village. Some things are worth preserving.
Looking back at New York's lost treasure.......2004-06-27
I was barely seven years old when old Penn Station was torn down, but I remember the sadness and outrage of my neighbors in Brooklyn. I had only been to the station once or twice but I was too young to remember. I didn't really understand the big fuss about its destruction. And after it was gone, I don't remember there being too much grieving.
Now looking back, through films and books, I understand what it was all about. "The Late, Great Pennsylvania Station" by Lorraine B. Diehl is the best book on the subject that I've come across. Her analysis of the rise and fall of McKim's great station is both awe-inspiring and heart-breaking. The smattering of beautiful photographs is a plus, as well. Penn Station's demise, of course, could be regarded solely as a loss for the city but, as Ms. Diehl explains, the real legacy of the destruction was the enormous preservation/conservation movement that followed. In the aftermath, so many other buildings were spared a similar fate.
There are those who say that the people behind Penn Station's demolition were justified (Ms. Diehl rightly avoids villifying anyone). The apologists for the destruction claim that Penn Station was too big, in the wrong place, and was in the red. The Empire State Building was erected ten blocks south of the midtown business area and three miles north of the Wall Street district. It was a very big building and rarely had over 50% occupancy until the 1950s, when it finally began earning money. Should it have been knocked down too?

Customer Reviews:
A decent book i think:).......2007-02-23
This book is not that bad, but it may not be suited for you if you have NEVER drawn something before:S
It has a lot of step by step guides and contains a good variety of subjects to draw. Hailing from vampires, zombies, vixens to werewolves:) This book is easily one of my favorites even if i cannot give it a top score grade... The reason why, is because it IS a bit advanced. Even if the step-by-step guides are somewhat easy to follow, if you don't have "pencil feeling", then you'll screw up a lot:S Belive me:p
But that may be just me:S It's not a bad book at all, so i can reccomend this one:) Buy it, you won't be dissapointed:)
Decent.......2007-01-22
It was a decent book, I think it could have shown a few more steps on how to draw everything but not too shabby overall.
Not very complete.......2006-11-10
It's a nice book but you need to have and idea in painting because it's no so basic
awesome.......2005-09-01
this book is a good book if you want to draw scary skeletons and stuff like that. in my opinion, i thought it was cool because it has an interview plus art from Vince Locke ( the guy who does cannibal corpes's artwork among many other).
Scared, but in a good way.......2004-12-11
I saw this book in the store and debated buying it for my twelve year old son. It is a little gruesome and the women are quite buxom. I finally decided to order it from Amazon and see what my son thought. Well he loves it! Now he draws nothing but werewolves and zombies fighting each other, I think that is a good thing(?). It is a nice follow up from author Steve Miller, my son got his book Freaks! As well so sooner or later he will probably start drawing zombies fighting cat people. I'm tempted to actually try my hand at drawing some of the characters for Halloween decorations (tempted, but I'll probably just end up making blow up copies at Kinko's.) All in all a nice book for children (and parents-lol) not prone to nightmares.

Lighting for Glamour Photography

Book Description
Join a team of photographers and two models on a practical workshop in Majorca for a refreshing look at glamour photography, as they explore both classical and experimental approaches.
Starting off with a look at the equipment required for a glamour shoot, the authors also offer practical advice on searching for suitable models. The pictures produced during the workshop describe the whole process, and compositional considerations are covered next - the possibilities of camera format and location, and how to frame a figure to achieve different effects. The first practical session has the participants outdoors, choosing locations at the pool, on the beach, and in the landscape. The need to plan shots is emphasised, and this chapter offers plenty of practical advice on how to do this. The second session sees the team setting up an indoor studio, and gives examples of what can be achieved through the positioning of lighting and reflectors, and the use of ambient light. The final chapter discusses what can be done with the images once they have been shot, examining the range of options with slide film, print film and digital media. More than 200 shots and 6 portfolios by the participants demonstrate the success of the workshop, and make this book a real treat for all lovers of modern glamour photography.
Martin Sigrist writes for various photographic magazines, and is the author of many books on photography. Matthias Stolt is a professional photographers who is internationally renowned for his fashion, figure and nude images. They both live in Germany.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad.......2004-09-08
Pros: Multiple useful tips and creative ideas for the novice. Good indoor setup coverage, interesting 'workshop' concept, good quality print and layout.
Cons: The same two 'Ok' models thru the entire book. Very little outdoor techniques (i.e reflectors and gear). Workshop concept has it's limitations. Many average, dull pictures. No digital coverage.
Very Creative.......2004-07-02
The concept itself is worthy of praise - take two models and photograph them from every angle, using every photographic technique in the book. I suspect that there are not many models that have had as much "exposure" in any single printing as these two lovely ladies. Provided within are some good lighting tips for the amateur to moderately advanced glamour photographer, both indoor and outdoor, as well as a good general advise for on-location photography logistics. Having six workshop photographers contributing their creativity certainly shows in this book! I've owned the book for a year now and still refer back to it on occassion for ideas. That's high praise considering I have just about every glamour photography book on the market.

Complete Guide to Beauty & Glamor Photography
ASIN: 0879857749 |
Book Description
What does it take to get a great nude photograph--to choose the right model, make her feel comfortable, style her to best effect, and place her in eye-catching compositions? A top photographer, a former model herself, reveals all the details of what goes on in her studio and how she plans and carries out a shoot. Using an array of nude photographs and a personal, chatty style, Brown explains how she selects and directs her models, emphasizing that while physical imperfections can be disguised (she'll tell you how) nothing hides a lack of personality--and that makes for a dead photo. Find out what to do when faced with someone inexperienced, nervous about going nude, or chosen by a client who doesn't share your taste. Take advantage of expert and very practical advice on where to find staff, what to do when things are going wrong and you must get the shot, and how to achieve a subtle eroticism with drapery or through a model's glance. Plus: Brown's favorite model gives her perspective, too!

Don't bother.......2002-07-25
This book is a complete waste of time and money for anyone looking for information or images on glamour photography. Very little substance of use. I own approximately 15 books in the area of glamour photography and have read and studied them all. I use them to develop my technical abiliy and creative vision. The 3 best buys I've found for content are "Successful Glamour Photography" by John Kelly, "Part-Time Glamour Photography Full-Time Income" by Joe Farace and "Lighting For Glamour Photography" by David Kimber. These 3 books cover most aspects of glamour photography from the technical to finding models and selling your photographs. Hope this helps those of you looking for more detailed information on the subject of glamour photography.
selling soap.......2002-01-14
You wont find any great secrets to photographing the nude in this book. The author seems more concerned on ways of covering the nude than photographing it. Photographic examples are glib and fomulatic looking. Photographs are composed and lighted for soap and skin care product ads that would be aimed at the female consummer and won't offend granma.

Feeling let down.......2001-04-13
A number of years ago I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy Brown's book on Advertising Photography and so I ordered her book on Nude Photography sight unseen. I was very disappointed. This book gives very few details on what is a very complicated subject and also manages to give too much information on some very obvious points. I was also disappointed with the photographs. A lot of them were the same in pose and lighting and, although I do understand that the author is doing a series of non-nude photographs with capes, those photos do not belong in this book. The lighting diagrams give very little information and the size of those diagrams and the size of the some of the print take up an inordinate amount of the pages. This book is a very quick read with little information. Had this been an article in a photography magazine I would not be complaining so loudly. For the price of this book however, I feel that the author has let us down.
A Good Start.......2001-03-10
I first noticed this book at a photo store. After a few minutes browsing I thought it looked interesting. However after buying it I found there was little more to it than what I had picked up in a quick browse. There are some interesting perspectives on working with models. There are also a few technical hints, and some advice on breaking in the business. But I thought none of the topics was covered in sufficient depth to be useful. It's a good start to a book that needs to either focus topics or expand greatly to be useful.

Great book for anybody wishing to enter a clinical trial........2003-04-13
I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about entering a clinical trial. Research Studies are valuable tools for learning about diseases, and sometimes the only way to find a cure for a disease. But you have to understand to risk and side affects associated with them. This is a must read book for the researcher, doctor, and patient alike.

Book Description
Despite being disdained by the German Army’s professional officer corps, the military branch of the Nazi SS security organisation grew from an initial strength of only a handful of battalions at the outbreak of war in 1939 to hundreds of thousands of troops in dozens of divisions. The battlefield reputation of the premier armoured and mechanised divisions would become second to none; lavishly equipped and regarded as utterly reliable, they were thrown into many desperate battles on both Western and Eastern fronts, often achieving remarkable results. Illustrated with rare photographs, this first of four Men-at-Arms titles details the organisation, uniforms and insignia of the Waffen-SS.
Customer Reviews:
Well done, as usual........2007-09-03
Gordon Williamson did well, again. Fantastic place to start with for a specific unit divisional history studies. Sections for each unit include: names used, commanders, campaigns, insignia and for most of them - colour example of uniforms/wepons/field gear.
Its by no means an ultimate knowledge base for any division listed, but thats the excellent starting point.
My only doubt is: why are those Osprey guys not including any bibliography in it ?!?

Book Description
Discovering the Moscow Countryside is a fascinating voyage into the history, architecture, people, and archaeology of the country that surrounds Moscow. The towns and villages dotted around this wooded landscape are rich in associations. Wave after wave of invaders--Tatars, Poles, French, and Germans--sought to conquer Russia through these lands. Now, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of the beautiful monasteries and little ruined country churches are coming back to life. This is also the land of the dacha--that special haven to which all city dwellers, at the first melting of the snow, escape: whether it be to a wooden mansion or a tiny room lost in the woods. This book is a practical guide for the tourist keen to explore this fascinating area of Russia, as well as for the curious armchair traveler.
Customer Reviews:
Discovering Russia's Capital Region.......2005-06-09
As the founder of Discovering Russia, a company devoted to enriching cultural and business travel to Russia, we are always looking for good travel books to recommend for our clients. "Discovering the Moscow Countryside : An Illustrated Guide to Russia's Heartland" by Kathleen Berton Murrell is such a volume for those who wish to discover the fascinating yet little-explored region surrounding Moscow, a land of princely families and wealthy merchants and dedicated believers.
Murrell, the author of the wonderful "Moscow Art Nouveau," presents two weeks' worth of touring.
There are some items missing from this book, such as an index, and unfortunately none of the place names in the book are in Cyrillic. In a way, that omission is not too much of an issue for the tourist, as it would be almost impossible for a visitor to Russia to travel to this region without the aid of a guide, or at least a knowledgeable driver (which is what we recommend to our clients visiting the area).
"Discovering the Moscow Countryside : An Illustrated Guide to Russia's Heartland" is a wonderful guide for discovering Russia beyond Moscow.

Battle of all battles........2005-03-06
Reading of historic battles gives the true feeling of life or death many have fought for throughout history. This book, almost like that of a TIMELIFE production has near or over 100 photos. My grandpa spoke of the cold and snow as he also fought against the Germans. How many of his friends died defending our homeland. I could heard the words of my grandpa as I read this book. I was left speechless, daunted, and truly sad for how my Russian fellow men, women, and children died to defend our country.
Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews "The Defense of Moscow".......1998-04-09
The Soviet Front during World War II is at once the most important aspect and the least studied part of the Second World War. Many times more troops were employed on the eastern front than were ever used in France or Italy or in the African campaigns. The eastern front was a place of truly epic proportions in every aspect.
Geoffrey Jukes is a British expert on Soviet affairs and has written many books in the Ballantine Illustrated History series. Each one of them gathers the attention of the reader and in a very short space, (the books in the series each average only about 150 pages in length and are liberally sprinkled with pictures, leaving very little room for text) conveys a surprizing amount of information.
Brief as the books are in the Ballantine series, the books retain the interest of adults as well as teens. It was an exceptional series which began publication in 1968 and continued to add new books to the series as late as 1977. It is unfortunate that this series is now out of print.

Short, concise but with some mistakes.......2007-09-19
I read this book here in Brazil. This book has many photo(all of them black & white), is concise and short. This book has some failures. One of these failures are weak maps. This book was published in 1970 decade;it hasn't information released after the fall of Soviet Union.
The introduction was made by german general Hasso Von Manteufell. The first chapter is about the ascention of soviet Marshall Zhukov. The last chapter is about the soviet counter offensive, after Moscow battle itself.

Book Description
We all want to understand the world around us, and the standard for scientific enquiry of the world was set my the ancient Greeks. Their thought and writings laid the essential foundations for the revivals of science in medieval Baghdad and renaissance Europe. Now this book makes the work of over 100 of these fathers of modern science available to all.
The book begins by describing the environment in Ancient Greece that led to both the development and decline of Greek science, followed by eleven chapters that cover the main disciplines. Each chapter includes a brief biography of each ancient author.
